I want ESPN to cover sports and do in depth nerd analysis like they did back in the 1990s, all while not taking themselves too seriously. Then they started thinking they were hot shit and they were the story instead of the sports being the story. And they can say whatever they want about Donald Trump or whomever on Twitter I just don't want that shit in my sports coverage. I mean I barely care what political pundits have to say about to say about politics, much less sports ones.12 points

As I was dropping my third-grader off this morning, I gave him a “love you, son, have a good day.” And he responded, “love you too, dad,” then, “see ya laterrrrrrrrrrr” in a Robert Ford voice. Rewarding moments of parenthood.10 points

Sports network stopped doing sports. MTV stopped showing music videos. Food Network stopped cooking food. I don't know what to make of it all. Pretty sure that yankees are involved in this mess.8 points

If anyone has a problem with it, take it up with the bush admin who gave him an offer. I go back and forth on whether I like him being out, but I strongly believe that when you serve your time, you deserve to go free. A deal is a deal. hopefully he does something good with the rest of his life.7 points

Ok. Fuck that. You show up to my house with a group of 12 people threatening to cause bodily harm to my kid and then proceed to shoot it up with paintball guns breaking windows to goad him outside so he can possibly get killed by this angry mob. You're gonna get shot.7 points

If that's the route they're going with then come out in public and say "Look, Dotard is a fucking criminal but there's no reason to impeach him in the House because the GOP Senate is full of traitorous assholes that will protect him at every step. You want him gone? Vote his dumb ass out!" I'd respect that at least.6 points

The gorge is...wait for it... gorgeous! I have a bunch of buddies coming up this weekend from Austin. One the days they're here we'll go play a couple of rounds of disc golf in the gorge (N. Bonneville & Cascade Locks) and have lunch at Thunder Island Brewing. I found the picture of Olive at Angel's Rest (appropriate name in retrospect).6 points

I'll reply to you because I know based on other threads you've at least got some common sense to you (not sure about that other guy.) I understand you POV and it's always a shame when someone loses their life, within circumstance (ask me if I give a fuck about pedos or religious fanatics whose main purpose in life is to kill people like me.) I can't speak for everyone but this isn't a, "hooray, fucker got what was coming to him!!" story for me. This should've been resolved in a multitude of different ways. Where you need to focus on is the options the father had from the information we know. This was at midnight. 15 persons ranging from 17-22 years old intruding your property with the intent of property damage, not to mention serious bodily harm, if not murder (how are you seriously going to know in these circumstances,) your son. Now that you can look at the situation as we know it, I'm not sure what else the father was supposed to do, and to only have one dead none injured shows a level of restraint to me. Warning shots can get you into trouble. It's called unlawful discharge of a weapon. Plus you're still responsible for where that bullet ends up. Not exactly a smart move if you ask me. And the cops? Lol. This was just outside of Denver Harbor. Not too far away from trinity gardens and the 5th ward. Honest question here. What do you think the police response times are in neighborhoods like those and would you risk that time given these circumstances to call 911? It's sad young people were acting dumb (shocking) and someone lost their life because of it. It's also sad that a father had to go these lengths to protect his son. This is a no win situation for everyone involved and the best take away is using this as a lesson for our own sons. That's just my read tho...6 points

The problem with ESPN is not that they have allowed politics to bleed into what they do. The problem is, they started sucking really, really badly at what they do. If they did sports well, they probably wouldn't have time for the other crap, but it wouldn't bug people as badly when it did crop up. But if you suck at what you do AND you're talking about something you know nothing about, there's only one inescapable conclusion: you suck.6 points

I never believed people on here when they said they never watched ESPN because of the politics, and I won't believe anyone who claims they started watching again now that it's less political. ESPN is having a natural downfall due to people just having other places to go. People will tune in to live sports and that's why ESPN spends so much on rights. But Barstool, Bleacher Report, The Ringer, House of Highlights, and their ilk as well as general chord cutting had more to do with declining ratings than politics.6 points

I have a lot of Zoom meetings for work as I work remotely. Had a girl in a meeting earlier this week sitting on her couch with her laundry drying behind her. Her bras and panties were all in full view. She was petting her cat. The cat was brought up and the girl said, "my kitty likes to be rubbed."5 points

A good defense if someone accuses you of crimes is to accuse them of crimes. And then when they say, "no seriously, you committed crimes," just say "your face committed crimes."5 points

I used to parrot this line, but I now think it's wrong. The GOP and Fox News are willing to lie, cheat and steal to win. They aren't better at defining the narrative, they're controlling it through completely unethical means. It amounts to whitewashing to suggest that they're more skilled at shaping public perception.5 points

I don't often disagree with you but I strongly disagree with this assessment. Trump is going to yell "NO COLLUSION YOU'RE DOING THE CRIMES AND TREASONS!" at the top of his lungs no matter what the Dems do. Trump and the GOP's best shot at winning in 2020 is to win by a narrow margin by depressing turnout and splitting the opposition, much as they did in 2016. That requires selling undecided voters on the "they're all the same" idea. They should have done it a month ago, but if the Dems begin impeachment hearings on Tuesday, they can sell many more undecideds on the idea that they're doing it out of their sworn duty to uphold the Constitution rather than naked political calculus. They can focus the entire public on the entire scope of Trump's corrupt, criminal, and inappropriate behavior in a manner that the ongoing committee investigations can't. Committee investigations simply don't get the same degree of news coverage as impeachment proceedings. They can make the case against Trump to every single American who is even remotely interested in politics, and it's an extremely easy case to make. And then, after they've argued their best case to the most Americans that will ever listen to it, when the GOP Senate refuses to remove him, they can make the case that the entire GOP is complicit in Trump's criminality and corruption because they're just that fucking dedicated to take peoples' healthcare away to give the wealthy even more tax breaks. These ads write themselves. The point isn't to get Trump out of office. The point is to convince enough of the American people that there actually is a difference between the parties, and that the entire GOP is complicit with Trump's criminality and corruption and must be removed from power at every level down to fucking dogcatcher.5 points

I took a 10 mi hike today in the Columbia River Gorge in an area that was heavily affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek fire. It was amazing to see how varied the burn patterns were depending on the aspect of a slope, total burn versus patchwork, and observing the understory of the forest roaring back with green life. While the fire was devastating and heartbreaking for many, what I saw today was strangely amazing.5 points

ESPN's days are gone and they aren't coming back. And I don't think political commentary has or had much to do with their ratings decline. They just fucking suck and the alternative options are vast these days, especially for distinct coverage. You think Pitaro is a genius? Go catch two hours of Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman struggling to pretend that they care enough to have 7 different debates on a single episode over innocuous bullshit until Smith feigns going into high pitch, screech mode like a physical version of a catch phrase. The programming is garbage. In their glory days sports dominated the coverage in highlight form. That was the simplicity that worked. The game selling itself rather than six meatheads screaming at the same time. Love or hate Chris Berman, for instance, but if you remember his version of the show 'NFL Prime Time,' 90% of it would be highlights with commentary in the background. Each game was covered with about 6 minutes straight of in depth highlight footage. And not just big plays, a couple of scores and then hurriedly getting back to the studio. They'd show almost every turnover and fourth down attempt. You'd watch mostly the human movement of the game rather than some asshole in a loud suit. Every show is the opposite of that now as the focus is now on the broadcasters. The simplicity that you're talking about is making sure the sport is the focus. They aren't doing that. It's mostly bland people trying way too hard to be animated personalities by gesturing wildly to display their "passion." It's celebrity culture first and a cerebral approach pretty much never.5 points

It was surprisingly easy to quit ESPN when they started sniffing their own farts. I don’t remember the last time I checked in there unless a sporting event was on or a 30 for 30 that seemed compelling was playing. It’s got to be a decade+. I don’t see my habits trending back in their direction. I can get highlights with ease anywhere I want. They can fuck right off with what they did to something beautiful.5 points

So they fired Sarah Spain and Bomani Jones? No? Then I call bullshit on this.5 points

While this is true, their transition shouldn't have been to more loud gotcha personalities and the almost inevitable coverage of professional wrestling once they went that route. It should have been to more in depth analysis like the NFL Edge show or whatever it was called with Jaworski. They still do bits and pieces of that like Tim Legler on the NBA but you have to watch a half hour of bullshit to get to it. And highlights packages would still work if they mixed in analysis of crucial plays. People still want to see their team's or the big game's highlights on their big TVs without having to search or scroll. It's not as big a deal anymore but it still matters.4 points

I stopped giving credence to big city sports commentators when Myron Cope was spewing his bullshit about the superiority of Navy, Roger Staubach, & eastern football in general over Texas and the rest of flyover country. Fuck that guy. If I actually have enough interest to watch a sporting event on the flatscreen, the sound will be off. Even Mrs. Brat, when watching Longhorn football games, turns off the sound and listens to Craig Way. She thinks broadcast booth idiots, sideline bimbos and other “interviewers” are worthless noise. I concur. Never have watched any ESPiN talking head shows. I just don’t give a shit about what they think. With that attitude, I was unaware that politics had been polluting the sports airwaves in recent years. Just read a few tidbits, mostly on this forum, about the Anthem kneeler crap. I have divorced myself from that shit, just as I did with the diseased CR sewer. Life is too short to get wound up with the rest of the mental cases.4 points

Sad to hear Olive is no longer with us, but glad to hear she got to go to some nice places ! today I hiked from river level up to Indian Point in the Gorge (about 5-10 mi upriver from Angel's Rest) and did a 10 mi route with 3k ft climb w Bo. The Indian Point spire is 2240 ft above the river and basically just plunges down. Looks like a squirrel suit base jump site.4 points

They make paintball guns that look like real ones. Them being paintball guns probably wouldn't come across your average person's mind. I imagine there is some fear involved seeing a mob of teenagers outside your house with what you think are guns. Why should he have to take the chance that they are not real guns? Some could have had paintball guns and others could have had real ones. He was put in a shitty situation. I don't want to charge people who are put in shitty situations with crimes.4 points
