  1. Shit's scary as fuck. Our COVID+ ICU is currently full, but we can expand into the rest of the medical ICU for a few other beds. But y'all know COVID people aren't the only ones who need ICU-level care right now, yeah? Other acute/chronic medical issues and trauma don't stop attacking the population just because the 'Rona is in town. We can't save every bed for COVID unless you want Med/Surg RNs caring for critical patients (no shade, but it's an entirely different field of nursing, and people will die). Our PPE situation is slightly better in that we are no longer reusing thin paper gowns. We have thin plastic gowns that we are able to wash and reuse, so you get a new gown and gloves every time you go into a room. But you better not need a new N95 or face shield! At the end of our shift, we have to place the masks into a bin for "recycling," which is a fancy word for being sprayed with poisonous gas, left to air dry, and returned to the unit with "acceptable performance." They say they can do this to a mask 20x before the masks degrade. They say. But anyone who regularly wears an N95 can attest to the fact that after the first use, it's incredibly difficult to get a complete seal every subsequent time you use the mask. Furthermore, even though universal masking is in place—that is, everyone wears at least a surgical mask while in the hospital—you certainly aren't allowed to wear an N95 from home because that would make people without home N95's jealous and non-COVID patients nervous. Yes, they will send you home without pay if you fight about it. My work wife, an amazing trauma nurse with a newborn, was sent home last night because she wanted to wear an N100 that she had sourced. A quick pro-tip: if you find yourself in the hospital for Coronavirus and the doctors and nurses are telling you that you need to lie on your stomach to help prevent yourself from getting intubated, please believe us. You'll find it a lot less awful than waking up with a tracheostomy because we can't get you off the vent otherwise. Headed back tonight.

  3. Crazy idea ... maybe there is a reasonably moderate path to walk so long as cases start to drop and keep dropping. Somewhere between mask-free rave mode and staying in your bathroom covered in hand sanitizer. Right now, cases in Texas are not dropping (which is bad) but the number of positive test results is low (around 5%, which is good). rt.live has our R number at 0.84 (good, less than 1, a path to no disease) but epiforcasts.io has it at 1.2 (moderately bad, a path to a big problem). The truth is probably in the middle somewhere. We have a problem and it it is likely slowly growing. Some projections show it slowing down in the future but right now the numbers are still going in the wrong direction. We are on a slowly rising plateau looking at two futures, one where cases slowly drop and one where they rise until they are out of control. You, my fellow Texan, can help make the problem go away. Spread out, wear a mask when appropriate, and wash your hands. You don't have to, but if you do it will help. Stay home if you feel sick and especially if you know you have come in contact with someone who has it. Not forever, but for a little while. Ask your neighbor how they are doing. They might be sad, lonely or just need someone to run to the store. A five minute chat across a front yard might cheer them up. Every little thing you do reduces the chance that one person will infect another person, which reduces the size of the problem. It keeps that R number just a little bit lower which makes the problem go away faster. Doctors and nurses have less emergency work to do in a less risky environment and can work more on the other problems we have. You'll never know if you saved the life of a kid or a grandma, but maybe you did. I see a risk in our polarized society that we will start choosing extreme paths on one side or the other, regardless of the data, based on which leaders we like. And that we will be too critical of each other for being on the other side. I would instead ask you to do what you are willing to do and watch those case numbers. If they are not dropping, consider doing more until they are.

  7. 80,000 dead Americans. And climbing. Encouraging armed yahoos to march on state capitols. Lying repeatedly about the greatest crisis the world has experienced in generations. All while continuing to steer graft to himself and his cronies. Spending an entire day tweeting fucking insults. Never even a word of empathy or leadership for the American people. Putting his unqualified son in law in charge of the greatest endeavor we've faced as a country since WWII. And the list goes fucking on, and gets even fucking worse. With Trump, it ONLY gets worse. It never gets better. The time for fucking manners is OVER. Fuck "polite." I'm done with being polite. I'm done with treating ANYONE who EVER supported Trump (especially those who continue to enable and excuse him) with any measure of politeness. Not even a fucking speck. They are LITERALLY enemies of humanity. How and why in the blue fuck would I treat those people with any fucking "politeness?" The deserve our contempt, scorn, and if we can muster it, our hatred. That's what it will take to root out their evil and bullshit. My negativity is exactly where it needs to be. I'm done. Enough, basta. This fucking joke is over. It was never funny, but standing next to a mountain of corpses and a shattered economy, its depravity couldn't be more apparent. You tell me that I'm negative? That I make it hard to be polite? GOOD. That's the greatest goddamned praise I could hope for. I hope that I make you uncomfortable. I hope you know that there are millions like me. And we've had enough of your shit, because it's killing my countrymen and ruining lives. There is one decent place to be in this world -- opposing anything and everything associated with a regime of depravity, evil, and cruelty in the name of self-interest. Anything other than that is morally indefensible. YOU are morally indefensible. As if anyone believes that you won't "reluctantly" pull the lever for a man who you excuse and support at almost every opportunity. Have the balls to be what you are. At least have that. You'll at least be a piece of shit with some dignity.

  8. That’s a combination of non existent WR coaching and Malcolm Epps being a particularly special brand of pussy. Not specifically a knock against recruiting big bodied wide receivers. Other schools do fine with the big guys, and I’m hoping our luck changes with Omiere, and we see Eagles get more physical as well. But yeah, that’s non existent coaching and Epps being the Satya of WRs.

  13. It would help if you understood how government works. In the sane, non internet fantasy dork world, national intelligence and the FBI do not serve the acting president's interests They serve the country's interests. And when a highly unprecedented and potentially threatening action takes place such as... I don't know, planned members of an incoming admin's cabinet breaking laws and repeatedly failing to disclose or actively hiding conflicts of interest, you're God damn right the Feds should investigate. So basically what this utterly ridiculous attempt at unmasking a conspiracy does, is remind us all that Trump signed up a bunch of corrupt pieces of shit in 2016. And most of them are now gone. Because even the head piece of shit couldn't handle the heat that brought. Those are utterly brilliant things to remind swing voters about, six months before an election. So good job, good effort. If the FBI and/or intelligence folks brought up an investigation on the Biden's, I would be *highly concerned*. Why? Because Trump has roundly rejected and ridiculed those teams at every turn. So I would feel quite confident they weren't acting beholden to him. The big question is, why would a sitting president ostracize his own intelligence arm? The only two possible answers are that he's the dumbest person alive, or that they don't act in his personal interest. And it makes him angry. Which of those two concerns you the most?

  15. Yeah your response is complete bullshit. The lockdowns and trillions of lost dollars prove you completely wrong, as far as intent anyway. You might not agree with the steps or think they're enough, but you're out of your mind if you think people haven't taken this seriously. If it were nothing more than a an "economic irritation and inconvenience," then not one municipality, county, or state would have taken the steps they have to help prevent the spread and flatten the curve. I really tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but it's quite possible you're the biggest fucking moron on this entire forum, and that is REALLY saying something,

  16. It has been a terrible week -- today we lost the nicest dog to ever walk the earth. Abby had a bunch of seizures Wednesday, got worse Thursday and spent the day at the vet. When we picked her up yesterday, she couldn't stand, swallow, or see. After no improvement, we had her put out of her misery this afternoon. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you hug your dogs extra tight and tell them that they're good dogs.

As for me, I’ve personally seen dozens of C19 deaths that were not notated as such - and I have 150+ providers in our group who have seen much of the same. We are in mostly large metro areas. So what do I give a shit about what the state puts on a death cert? We are getting killed in hospitals and hemorrhaging cash while taking care of a lot of really sick people. There’s no magic pot of cash if we go document a bunch C19 deaths. That’s for morons on the internet to argue over.

  22. We will never ever have that kind of cooperation and national spirit and pride ever again. And there’s one reason - dumb people with attitudes. Back then, dumb people weren’t personally aggrieved because smart people existed. Dumb people used to be able to get lifelong jobs that let them have a nice enough life and they were okay with letting the smart people run things. Now, dumb people work in dumb jobs and spend 18 hours a day in front of any various type of screen; a screen with self curated news or entertainment or other like minded dumb people. Their jobs suck. Their kids suck. Their housing sucks. Everything sucks. And they KNOW it. But they’re too proud to admit it. And heaven help any know it all, busy body, smart person who points out their sucky lives. So, anything backed by smart people and leaders is reflexively met with resistance and usually outright hostility and violence. There is no more “Everyman” who will fall in line with a plan laid out by smart people and pull together for the national or global good. There’s just “Joe Sixpack” and he ain’t got time for your bleeding heart, high falutin’ plan. His motto is “Fuck you, pay ME! And if I ain’t getting mine, no one is getting anything!” America isn’t part of The Allies any more. We’re The Axis.

  27. I once briefed Mike Flynn. His CSM even gave me a coin for my briefing. At the time, I found him to be engaging, intelligent, and personable. That was all before he decided to, at least publicly, break the oath he swore to the Constitution, to the Men under him, and to his uniform. The other players in all of this are pawns in a grand scheme. But flynn... flynn must be held accountable for his indiscretions. Our Oath must be solemn and uncompromising. I have nothing but contempt for him as a human being and reject him and everything he has ever asserted.

  29. I’m concerned our government is completely misinterpreting the current situation and what is going to happen in the future. They are treating the whole thing as a quick little economic blip when in reality we probably have a two year plus slog through a horrible economy with millions of unemployed. The economy is not just going to magically snap back. That isn’t how deep recessions work. You can’t just splash around some money to hope that it goes away. The economy is too big for a few trillion to work that strongly. Now the House is proposing another $3T with another $1200-$6000 in payments. How many times are we going to give money, as opposed to employing people to get something for the money given? Shouldn’t the government be working on a massive works program (corona safe jobs), ala FDR, so that these masses of unemployed can work with the country getting some benefit from the trillions of dollars we are giving people? The first emergency payments made sense but at some point our government needs to wake up and realize it’s not a short term problem. People want to work, so everyone wins.

  31. In places like Texas, we never even had a curve to flatten...we locked down very early in the viral process. The infection and death rate on May 1 is the baseline rate for our definition of essential businesses, as we'd been sheltering in place for 5+ weeks by then. Most geographies tell a similar story. If you argue the essential business net was too wide, I'd probably agree with that, but our spike has been damn near non-existent. I can't really square that with the idea that we didn't take it seriously.

  36. Another classic fuck up on my part., that has been posted before. about 2 months or so ago, our wife tells me the ceiling fan broke. I was too busy to do anything about it, so she picked out a new one, blah blah blah after about 1.5 months of research. the 3 yr old and I open the new one to check it our, I wanted to read how much of a pain in the ass it would be to install. I look up. I notice the switch for the direction is half-way between up and down. The old fan works just fine. I will be installing the new one anyway this weekend I am sure with more toddler help. Her previous diagnostics had been 'I think something is wrong with your bike' = 3 broken/bent spokes following her colliding with a neighbor kid. And I think something is wrong with the car ' following a car accident where the tires was now rubbing against the wheel well. I am also getting ready for my future son-in-law to post on here. On a recent bike ride with my daughter (6) she managed to scrape her handle bars against my car for about 2 feet. My 3 yr old son manages the same gap without colliding. She also ran into a parked car and earned a black eye the day after.

  40. Second year guy here I've stopped fighting myself so much, used to tell myself to let things go, "just let go", "let it go", but I never could. Not my ex wife, not my job, not someone taking "my" parking spot, everything would piss me off, but what really pissed me off was being angry. Angry about being angry as they say. Somewhere along the line I stop a lot of it, definitely my spiritual side coming alive. It feels so much better to be able to let go of the big things, of the small things, everything. And it's not with indifference, I dont think. Still love my ex, wish her well, I'm all good. Work is good, no matter how many hammers they throw at me, and I'll walk a bit further is some asshole takes my spot things I've studied, read over and over again and thought no way, Gandhi describing how a person can transmute their anger into a power that can change the world, bullshit, but I can sense where he was going with it. MLK Jr, that no matter what happened, happens, we must forgive, and his thoughts on fear... that's the stuff that moves a person. tldr, glad I got sober, glad I found a healthy path and stuck with it. It was hell on earth to start, suicidal, but not anymore. I know I'll have my downs, but I also know they dont last, that an up is right around the corner. Keep picking yourself up, all of you.
