Would y'all kindly take your shitty football-board takes about Caden Sterns to the football board and/or the Cloak Room? Thanks and fuck you.37 points

One of the major points of inflamed feelings during this entire controversy was when a bunch of players decided that they didn't want to sing while a single player did. So I'm not sure you're taking into consideration the actuality that this compromise was in fact made and then ignored from the very beginning. As a black person who doesn't find the EOT racist and doesn't consider the fact that it originated at a minstrel show a disqualifying fact, there was a way to approach this from the beginning to highlight this angle of defense. Unfortunately too many people have obscured this legitimate defense with actual racist responses which causes even a person like me, who is inclined to be an ally, to say fuck these racist mutherfuckers. This thread alone is rife with numerous notions to blacks being lucky to even be a part of the university and other thoughts of the same bent. When people start to resort to racism to defend something that isn't racist, well then you lose the battle before it even begins, regardless of the facts at hand.28 points

It’s gonna be fun having a QB battle to spice up the offseason. Can’t wait for wildly varying reports on how they’re performing. I fully expect FCB to push out an article saying not to discount Charles Wright in the competition. The smart money will be seeing what OB says about the QB battle and then going with the exact opposite.15 points

This decision is so incredibly demoralizing. I know I'm not special and certainly recognize the past 12 months have been hard on all of us (many, if not most, worse than me), but please bear with the following whinging. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with major despressive disorder, so you all can imagine what living/working alone has done to my psychological/physical well-being. But I've stuck it out and have had this place as one of my outlets to commiserate and converse with a lot of like-minded, well-intentioned, and intelligent folks. That's something to be grateful for. Being stressed out, fighting tooth and nail against the Covid misinformation campaign directed against people like my elderly, conservative parents who watch FOX News like their lives depend on it and live(d) in MAGA-land, West Texas, my worse fear came true. Both parents contracted it, and only one survived. Then, six weeks later, our entire state temporarily crumpled under the rubble of Republican deregulated delusion. All of this was entirely avoidable but utterly predictable. Last week, I finally got that first dose and was beginning to feel optimistic about our course. Mother, sister, and daughter have all had their second dose. Spring is coming. The weather is warming. Doses are increasing. The economy is improving. We'll finally get to see our co-workers in 3D once again. Everything is looking up. And then this... It's like having an addict friend or family member who continuously pulls the rug out from under themselves, repeatedly shattering all hope for recovery in a cycle of constant self-destruction. We all need to go to some sort of Al-Anon type Citizens-Who-Give-A-Shit meeting in the short-term and attend Brink-of-Societal-Collapse PTSD therapy sessions over the long. Whinging concluded.14 points

I appreciate everyone going out of their way to disclose their private health information to confirm that they are in Group 1B. But honestly, at this point--fuck it. Abbott has just made it pretty fucking clear that it is every man for himself. Go out to Amarillo. They have so much vaccine out there they can't give it away fast enough. They're swimming in the shit. So while people in Austin and Dallas can't book an appointment to (literally) save their lives, all you need to do is walk up in Amarillo. I'm sure it will not shock you to hear that Potter County voted for Trump 68%-29%. I'm sure that has nothing to do with why Amarillo is getting so much vaccine. Of course, the people on this board can do that because we are generally pretty affluent. We can take time off work to we can afford to book a flight out to Amarillo ($169 each way on Southwest). But if you're poor; if you're an "essential" worker (which means you get no healthcare and we don't want to raise your minimum wage to $15/hour), you're right fucked. And of course, that probably means your non-white. And that's really part of the goal here, isn't it--to kill as many non-white people as possible. And yeah--I just accused Greg Abbott of attempting genocide. And on the evidence before us, can anybody argue that the allegation is misplaced?13 points

You know what's a fun conversation, relevant to the topic at hand, and definitely good for Texas if anyone feels like screenshotting it? Shitting all over Caden Sterns! Especially when you compare him unfavorably to a white player in the process!11 points

Put me in the camp of "the song will eventually go away, so just end it now so we don't have to keep doing this." We can reasonably defend the song as non-racist. We can make logical arguments to justify it, many of which are valid. But it doesn't matter. It's stained at this point; it's already done. More and more people will associate it with ugly racism - whether you think it should be or not. It doesn't matter anymore. My hunch is that the current student majority would vote to get rid of it. To me, this is their time. The players clearly have strong feelings about it. And every time it is covered in the media, it will carry negative connotations and we will look bad. And nothing good will come out of digging our collective heels in. I personally don't care about the song. Its a song. Not hearing it again will do nothing to change the fact that I had a great experience at UT, that I have pride in the institution, that I enjoy following the school's academic and athletic events, etc. And none of that is affected by whether we sing along to EOT after a football game, at all. My position is that I am not qualified to tell anyone what should or should not offend them. Right, wrong or indifferent - this isn't something that may be swept under the rug. It's going to keep coming up.11 points
-
You started with "middle ground" and ended up with a binary false choice. Interesting. But that isn't even the issue and the issue isn't even race. The booger blob of offended outrage insists on surviving and to survive it needs a constant stream of offenses to consume. If it can't locate any organic ones, it is more than capable planting new ones in the soil of the idiocy of our current culture and watering it daily with "reimagine" sauce until it has plenty eat. It is never satisfied. Ever.11 points

You’re kidding, right? You actually think the net effect of a “living estate tax” would disproportionately affect people of color? Wtf do you think they’d do with all that tax revenue? What % of the super wealthy in the US are POC? Im sorry, but the idea that we need to scrap ideas for new taxes as a tool to solve wealth/income inequality because those new taxes would impact super rich black people is fucking ridiculous on its surface, so if you’re going to seriously put that opinion forward, you need to bring a mountain of stats and research to support it. ETA: I don’t think a wealth tax is feasible and even if it were I don’t think it’s the right solution to the problem of wealth inequality. But I think saying it’s net effect would hurt POC is stupid.11 points

Don’t think the EOT is racist itself. But its history is murky enough that this conversation was inevitable and needed to happen. But what I DO know is that a bunch of our BMDs are racist pieces of shot who should fuck right off and not have anything to do with our university any longer. If the price of getting your donations is that we have to listen to your racist rants about “the blacks” and such....nope. Keep your money, and fuck off.11 points

I've probably said this before, but this impacts the world. One state not requiring masks is like having a peeing area in a swimming pool.10 points

I'm not claiming to be an expert. I am telling you I'm intimately familiar with how estates over 50 million are constructed and how easy it is to tax them, which is something different. Look, I actually have a similar outlook to you. I'm completely behind raising the floor instead of putting on a ceiling. I think supercharging the social safety net is the only way we will save capitalism, and I'm about the most ardent capitalist I know. But a moderate wealth tax is very straightforward to do, and we aren't talking about a British death duties thing here, we are still allowing growth at the top, we are just aiming to have the growth at the top and the bottom have more analogous rates, as they are so disparate right now that we cannot continue this way as a society before completely imploding. Billionaires just had their biggest quarter ever while half the country is starving.10 points

You are so right. Here are some literal quotes from my neighborhood Facebook page in the Dallas suburbs about Abbott stopping the mask mandate. There were some arguing how dumb this move is by Abbott but of course below is the other side. "I love it...but then again I love science and breathing and stuff. God Bless Texas" "Fauci ignored the science. At least Abbott follows the science and is doing what's right for us" "pretty sure you can still wear your muzzle if you choose...the way it should have always been. #mybodymychoice" "This is long overdue as masks don't work. Jesus will take care of those of us that believe in him" "I am over 65 and won't get the vaccine. You all can have mine. It will cause more harm than good and I am not afraid of Covid. It made Trump stronger" "This is why Texas won't become a socialist/communist state like the Democrats want the US to be. We believe in freedom"9 points

This is Texas. We can't run an electricity grid--something that runs on century-old technology. What the fuck would make you think that we could develop a system to vaccinate the entire population? We're last in per-capita vaccinations. We're Texas. Incompetence is our brand now.9 points

reading the last couple days' worth of posts on this thread has been disappointing, but sadly unsurprising. there are many disparate issues at play here. 1) the eyes. i love the eyes of texas. i grew up singing it. i've sung it after many games, at graduations, at weddings, at funerals. it has some real gravitas in my life. but it doesn't define me or my school. it is a song. i didn't know that it had some racist roots. and that's okay. i can't know what i don't know. however, now, i know, and i know it bothers people, specifically the black players on our football team, who are also students at the university i once attended. and that's what matters. those students on campus - that's who the university is there to serve. and, at the end of the day, however good i may feel singing the eyes has to be tempered by the fact that it is offensive to a large part of the team. 2) these new emails. these emails are outrageous. they are racist, they are full of entitlement, and they are a further indicator that texas athletics is kind of a ship of fools steered by alumni with checkbooks. but beyond that, they are a further indicator that we have a racist problem. "the blacks?!?!" who talks like that, much less puts it in writing to a public official? shit, my old racist dad always told me "always get it in writing, but never put it in writing if you can get away with it." but beyond that is the naked racism and old south mentality that black football players should just be grateful that they have the privilege of wearing burnt orange, instead of us being grateful that they are willing to do so. which brings me to 3) the players. there's this idea that i put in my last bullet point that they have the privilege of wearing our colors. that's not really the case. there's a reason our recruiting forum is so busy, and it has to do with our getting good players to field a competitive program. that actually means catering to them, the coaches appealing to them, selling them on the idea of coming here. then, and this is more critical now than ever before, convincing them to fucking stay here. they have realized that they have power and agency. and, frankly, that's a good thing. it's obscene, in a way, how much money our athletic department rakes in, and i say that as a season ticket holder in non covid years. spare me the "but they have access to a world class education" bullshit argument. that may be the case for the golf or tennis team, but football players come here to play football. that's all that is frankly expected of them, and the hypocrisy of that argument versus the standards for admittance is galling and hilarious at the same time. but, let's take that argument: these are students at the university, and they think things should be different. that's change, an that's how change happens on campus. it's their university, not mine any longer. i proudly have a degree from texas, but it isn't about me. it's about them. that's what so many miss about these issues. we feel a sense of ownership because we have one or two or three pieces of paper on our wall from there. we love our traditions. but they don't. and they are the ones going to class, going to practice, and playing on saturdays. it's their program, not ours, no matter how much money we spend on it. aside from the racism, the fucking entitlement in those emails is also appalling.8 points
