  2. observations: •we expected three point shooting and FT shooting to be better this year, and both lived up to expectations tonight. FT shooting wasn't perfect, but the entire damn team has a good looking stroke. •turned defense into offense all night. many of those made threes came in transition. if you watch the video above, in one of the last clips you can hear me say, "speaking of which..." right before Ramey nails a three and the crowd goes wild. my dad and i were talking about all of the transition threes just as that transition three unfolded. •the team looked surprisingly comfortable and in sync. i don't care if we played Johnston HS tonight, these guys looked like they've all been playing together for 2-3 years. none of the expected hesitation, or second guessing. everything on both ends flowed smoothly all night (ew). •we won't have a true alpha dog, but this is the deepest Texas team since the 2010 team that had Doj, J'Covan, Damion James, Avery Bradley, Jordan Hamilton, Dexter Pittman, Gary Johnson, and Justin Mason. it's like that. it doesn't matter if one or two guys are having an off night, because we have five more guys who you still have to account for at all times. defending this team will be very difficult for most of the teams on our schedule. •my dad and i both noted how refreshing the tempo was. the last 4-5 years have featured so many half court sets that last 30 seconds, with so much standing around and so little off-ball movement; this game was not like that. the transition buckets were plentiful, and the half court offense ran more smoothly than any offense we've had since Shaka's first year (shouts out Isaiah Taylor) •best opening night crowd ever. i'm serious. the excitement is palpable. we were up by 30 in the second half and an HBU player would miss a FT and the entire crowd would go nuts. i was amazed, and just absolutely impressed with the noise level and enthusiasm of the crowd tonight. it was like a high school crowd the way everyone was so into the game. the FEC is going to be *rocking* come conference play. oh, and that game on January 29th will no doubt be one of the greatest atmospheres in FEC history, right up there with the Strollin' Nolan game. here's my wrap up: no doubt many of you will remember the events which directly followed the season opener for the 2016-17 season. i went to the game, and i came back to shaggy and said (in so many words) "it's bleak." you will remember this because a feisty and interminable argument started between myself and some other poster whose name i can't recall. he insisted that there was too much mystery surrounding the roster for anyone to definitively declare that the team was good, bad, or anything in between. i, however, was adamant that i had seen enough season openers in my life (20-something at that point) to be able to pass judgment. as you may have tried to forget, we went 11-22 that season and all started huffing gas. shit was, indeed, bleak. well, this is the anti-2016 season opener. ive been to at least a couple dozen of these things in my life, and i know a very good/possibly great team when i see one. i am telling you, this team should not be as aligned and in sync as it is. there just hasn't been enough time. and yet, they are. that's the biggest thing. that's the one question that every CBB fan/analyst has had: how long will it take for this team to jell, and can they come together enough to be title contenders? i'm here to tell you that the answer is 'yes'. i was told by someone who was at the U of H scrimmage that, "If Disu is healthy, this team can go all the way. If not, then maybe the Sweet 16 is more realistic." after what i saw tonight, that sounds right. i cannot explain the chemistry that i witnessed tonight, but it's there. hoopers gonna hoop i suppose. we are going to compete for the big xii regular season title, we are going to win 23-25 regular season games, barring an injury crisis we are going to be a 3 seed in the tourney at worst, and if this team can stay healthy, we are going to be ranked in the top 5-10 for the majority of this season, and we will be a highly favored team come March. this is a Chris Beard team on steroids. five guys between 6'3" and 6'9", all of whom can run, defend, and shoot, and all of whom are high level D-1 players. this team is exactly why Chris Beard came to Texas. get your tickets now. get season tickets if you can. if you can't, then be on the prowl for single game tickets vs KU, OU, BU, and oh yeah, Tennessee. we have a special team that will only be around for one year, and you need to see them in person. you need to experience the FEC when it has 16,000 people going apeshit on a Big Monday vs KU or OU. ive said this once before, and i'll say it again: the only experience in my life as a sports fan that reminds of this one is the 2016 Cubs- we get Theo Epstein, we get Joe Maddon, we go add Lester, Rossy, Heyward, Zobrist, Arrieta, Chapman, etc. it was like, my entire life i've been a fan of this team, and we've generally been terrible, only to have our hearts ripped out the one time we were good, and now all of a sudden, it's as if i'm personally writing the script. that's what this feels like to me. i'm not afraid to get my hopes up. i'm thrilled to be getting my hopes up, because it's based on some very very solid ground. we have the team; we have the coach; we have the support. we have everything required for this to be an all time special season. get crunk. we're doing this.

  7. It's the only thing he has in his life. Over 21,000 posts, the vast majority of which consist of him belching into the CR echo chamber or trolling on other forums. He literally spends the majority of his waking hours engaged in this behavior. He deserves our pity, not our contempt. One of the great losers of our time.

  8. I’m against 17 year olds illegally obtaining weapons so they can be self-appointed police officers, firefighters, and EMTs despite the fact that they are completely unqualified for these jobs. I have no desire whatsoever to have random teenagers roaming the streets making real time decisions about who gets to live and who gets to die.

  11. Did he take the polio vaccine? Rubella? Chicken Pox? TB? Answer - yes. Those are required to enter Cal for all students. Even douche quarterbacks. What’s the fucking difference? Now go back in your hole.

  12. Man, I gotta say, I'm impressed with how -- outside of a tiny handful of miscreants -- how universal the response to this has been. There's been so much divison in the program, in politics, people accusing each other of being this or that or what have you. And yet, in the end, we all agree: those motherfuckers needed that motherfuckering, and snitches get stitches. It's not just us on Surly. It's r/CFB on reddit. It's the entirety of Twitter. And in one fell swoop, the question of "Is it the coaches, or is it the players?" has been answered. Decisively. Sure, they may not be the right coaching staff. But man, these players need to get their shit in gear.

  15. After spending most of the evening reading responses to this, on here, Twitter and Reddit, I've come to one insecapable realization: "The motherfuckers needed that motherfuckering" is the best response anyone has had or ever will have. @immamac there's your new motto. MFERs needing some MF***ering.

  17. Rubella was eliminated from being endemic in the US. We require rubella vaccines for kids to attend school. Every single person in the US has been vaccinated for Rubella besides the weird homeschool kids that never go to college. Guess, what, Rubella wasn't that deadly. In 1965, It only killed 2100 newborns and 11000 fetuses. Another 20,000 had birth defects. That is a drop in the bucket compared to Covid, but everyone still gets vaccinated. Why? Because as society we decided not be selfish pieces of shit and let some 2100 kids die. So your position of "I looked at the risks, and I'm just going to take my chances, sorry if someone else dies, that's just life" is abhorrent and you should be ashamed. That is not political. Taking the vaccine protects the lives of others, not just you. Refusing to take a vaccine is not a political stance, it is you being a selfish piece of shit. The rest of society calling you out for being a selfish piece of shit is not politically motivated. The motivation is not to have more people die.

  19. Shifting blame from Trump’s actions to the people who are demanding accountability because they apparently need constant drama is a weird take. I understand your point. The media is a constant shit show drumming up fake drama for clicks, and we as a society are shitty people because that’s what we enjoy. Understood, and to a certain degree, you are correct. That being said, it still doesn’t change the fact that Trump committed multiple crimes between Election Day and Inauguration Day, and still has not been held accountable. No amount of ignoring him will make that go away. He’s held multiple rallies, encouraged multiple states to audit the election, Arizona successfully, and continues to undermine Democracy. He will run again in 2024. But yeah, if we ignore him, he will just go away

  21. Ledge. It's ledge talk. And there are actually a good number of folks on this thread who I think are in the neighborhood of the right take. The conclusion of that is 1) Kyle ain't no hero, and shouldn't have been down there, and 2) once he was there, three dumbasses acted in utterly dumbtastic ways that gave him a solid defense of self-defense. Kyle went down there because he had delusions of glory, being a warrior hero, etc. He openly talked about wanting to shoot people. He was a kid, and shouldn't have been there. And the local cops shouldn't have encouraged him to put himself in that role. That was not good. The guys he shot were shitheels engaged in shitheelery. And they attacked a guy carrying an AR (which is perhaps the dumbest part of their symphony of dumbassery)....who then shot his attackers, giving him a pretty damned good defense. In another thread, I used the example of a gangbanger who had a rival come at him, and he shot him in self-defense. Gangbanger may be an utter POS, or may have been HOPING for his rival to come at him so he'd get a chance to take him out, none of which is good. But he still has a good defense of self-defense. KR is not a hero. He should not be turned into one. We should not have people -- of ANY political lean or persuasion -- heading down to protests or riots (or protests, hoping that it turns into a riot so you get a chance to shoot some people you don't like) to act as vigilante/self-deputized cops. I've said it before -- when you show up with a visible gun, then you just turned every possible confrontation into a gun fight. That's usually a bad outcome. We'd have all been better off if KR stayed home, the dumbasses did the same and/or if they were going to be out there, protest peacefully and non-violently, and if the cops did the job of dealing with dumbasses committing acts of arson and destruction of property. That's the optimum path. Things that go wildly outside that path shouldn't be lauded or held up as positive examples. TLDR; I don't much like any of the characters involved in this shitty drama. I have the most sympathy for KR because he is the youngest one, and allowed himself to be seduced into a course of action he thought was heroic. But my sympathy doesn't go very far, even for him.

  25. Also, my CSB. In my high school offense, WR stood next to our head coach, got the play call, ran it into the huddle. So, first play of the game, I run into the huddle and call the play. Not sure where my head was, but I ran out of the huddle and lined up on the wrong side. Coach calls time out (on the first play of the fucking game) and brings us over. I knew I was about to get chewed out. "What formation did I fucking call?!" I answered. "Then why'd you line up on the fucking left?!" I wasn't dumb enough to answer that obviously rhetorical question. "RUN THE FUCKING PLAY!" After the game, my dad (who was my high school principal, aka the head coach's boss, and was my high school's offensive coordinator back in the day) was curious to know why coach called the time out. I told him I lined up on the wrong side and got cussed out. My mom gets protective (not seriously, not like threatening to act or anything) and says something along the lines of "Gasp, he talked to my baby like that??!" And my dad looks at her and goes, "Well, he should've lined up on the right side 🤷🏽‍♂️"
