  1. I want to continue to keep this war in perspective from the human side. I am messaging from a train on my way to somewhere. I passed through Prague Central Station. Two things: 1. The Czechs are magnificent. Everywhere I looked there was, as Mr. Rogers said “a helper” treating traumatized people with kindness and compassion. 2. Most of us are men: I want you to imagine your wife, your kids, maybe your kids’ grandparents. Maybe a dog. Imagine them sitting on a pile of hastily packed belongings in a bus station in Canada. They ran from your home after someone started bombing it. They don’t know where you are and when they may see you or your house again. People are nice but there are not enough of them, so all there is to do is wait in the bus terminal. Hopefully a warm bed this evening. Thats what I saw, over and over and over. Now 150,000 some odd Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, a nation of ten million. If “Ukrainian refugees” were a city, it would be the fourth largest in the country and would have been created in two weeks. So go down to the “Help Ukraine/Fuck Russia” thread and see what you can do.

  3. What’s especially pernicious about the “lab questions” is that— those labs are there because of shit the Russians/Soviets did. It’s their own fucking fault that the labs are there. Here’s a walkthrough for those who need bullets. - The Soviets had extensive civilian and military research into deadly pathogens. Both weaponized and real medical research. - When the Soviet Union collapsed, newly independent, desperately poor states found themselves in possession of the world’s most deadly pathogens and no funds and a shortage of knowledge on what to fucking do with them and how to make sure Hizbollah didn’t get them. - The U.S., with the Nunn-Lugar initiative, stepped up to build secure facilities to store samples and safely destroy the bulk of this shit. - The same program also used these good facilities to make sure that the legitimate civilian research that Soviets did in their former empire didn’t collapse and turn these new countries into hotbeds of new bugs. Now, Q&A for Bravo and the cognitively disadvantaged - Q: Why didn’t they destroy all of the bad stuff? A: You better hope you find and destroy every last molecule and it never comes back, because without a sample you are FUCKED. - Q: Why did they have to do NEW research in these countries. A: I know it’s hard to believe but sometimes you might want to be forward deployed and catch shit where it starts. -Q: Why are we scared this may fall into Russia’s hands? A:

  4. Fear not...Germans can't handle spicy food whatsoever. Particularly that of the messcan variety. So that medium ain't gonna have no kick whatsoever. No exagerration here, but I have had the misfortune of eating store bought German salsa (which in English might as well translate to "ketchup with onion chunks") that was labeled as "hot" and it is something that babies in Texas could handle straight from the bottle. On the other side, quite a few Germans have had the blessed fortune of having a "mild" version of my homemade stuff, and their reaction was as though they had consumed the core of Chernobyl itself. Pussies.

  8. This. When "American law enforcement agencies" are one of the largest military forces in the world, with so much goddamn extra military kit that they can EXPORT it, we have a serious fucking problem.

  9. DT is for snowflake takes. A safe place from hot takes altogether. Snowflakes turn to whiny, persecuted tears in the presence of hot takes. CR is for anybody's takes. It's even a place to deposit steaming squirts of dishonesty and lies from time to time.

  10. He's not a talking head for Russia, per se. He's a talking head for the movement Russia is seen as a representative for. I've already been warned for talking about it on this thread, which is unfortunate, because it's a root cause for this conflict, and we're kidding ourselves if we ignore it, try to pretend it doesn't exist, or that we can somehow magically make it go away by calling it evil. What television "journalism" is about in this day and age is finding a core audience, building a brand loyalty, and generating ratings. In most ways it's no different than the behavior of the political parties they align themselves with. Because the Republican Party has aligned itself with Trump and the people who support him in all kinds of ways, that's who Fox News and its talking heads are aligned with. If someone else starts dominating the party, then that's who Fox News will align themselves with instead. So the answer here is to look at Trump, why he generates the support he does and from whom, and how is that support then translated into influence within the Republican Party itself. The good news is that much like in the rest of the world, what is happening in Ukraine is managing to marginalize anyone who would be predisposed to either want to support Russia or be completely neutral.

  11. How about Belarus? Here’s a perspective from their side (copy pasted from Twitter, @AlinaLeonovaSF) “I'm Belarusian. Seeing more and more hate against Belarusians as a result of Lukashenko's participation in Putin's atrocious war against Ukraine, I have a few things to say. But first, disclaimers: - I'm against the war (and so are 90% of Belarusians) - I'm against using Belarusian territory / equipment / military etc. against Ukraine (and so are 90% of Belarusians) - I've helped and will keep helping Ukrainian refugees in Poland where I am now Let me remind you that Belarus is an authoritarian country. We haven't chosen this government. We've tried to overthrow it, and we failed. We paid with our lives, blood and freedom for the attempt. So let me tell you what Belarusians are doing to support Ukraine. Those who live in Ukraine: - have joined territorial defense forces - stayed to keep working as doctors - are volunteering to help those affected by the war in every possible way Those abroad: - are donating money & things to help refugees, the military & people in Ukraine - are going to Ukraine to join its armed forces - have bought & donated equipment (eg. ambulances) to Ukraine - are volunteering and helping refuges - invite refuges into their homes Ppl in Belarus: - are protesting against the war - donating - have sabotaged the railway to stop Russian military equipment from going to Ukraine (considered terrorism and is punishable by life in prison or death sentence) - perform various underground acts of sabotage & resistance, including economic resistance and hacktivism This is not a complete list. I don't know everything, but I know that Belarusians are doing what they can. You say it's not enough. So let me tell you what it's like for us. We've lived under oppression for almost 30 years. Almost 30 years that Lukashenko has been strengthening his position and eliminating every possible threat to his rule, every public initiative & social structure. Everyone who has any power at all has been carefully selected. There has been constant propaganda & surveillance. We haven't had a real election since 1994. Lukashenko's political opponents have been killed & imprisoned. Every protest ended in brutal crackdown. 2020 wasn't the first time we protested, but perhaps it was the first time you've noticed us. The whole society united. We've failed (so far, because it's not the end of our fight). During and after the protests, Belarusians have been killed, maimed, raped & tortured. Over 50,000 have gone through brutal repressions. About 1000 people are currently political prisoners (add to them about 800 arrested during the latest protest against the war in Ukraine — we don't know what's happening to them). For the last 1,5 years, the oppression has only grown worse. Every social organization has been destroyed. Not only political ones, but also those that help domestic violence victims, animals or feed the homeless. NOTHING is left. EVERY alternative source of information has been declared 'extremist', and people have gone to prison for sharing the materials from those 'extremist' sources in PRIVATE messages. People were arrested for their HAIR COLOR. All our independent journalists are either in prison or abroad. Arrests keep happening every day. Prison sentences go up to 20 years. Hundreds of thousands have fled the country. We're still grieving and processing the trauma. The morale is very low. The risks are extremely high. Now go back and read again what Belarusians are doing to help Ukraine and think again if it's not enough. If you live in a democratic country, you have no right to judge us. You have no idea what it's like. You think you would be brave and protest openly? You'd just be thrown into prison to rot and very likely tortured. If you died during torture, lost your pregnancy or became permanently disabled, no one would be held accountable. It's actually ENCOURAGED. It has happened before. Today, Belarusians are starting to face discrimination in European countries where they've fled from the regime and where many of them are helping Ukrainian refugees and Ukrainian fight for freedom. Czechia has stopped opening visas to Belarusians. Europeans have refused to rent apartments to Belarusians, have banned them from participating in amateur sports competitions, refused them their services. They are bullying Belarusians online and to their faces. Immigrants already deal with grief and trauma in the aftermath of our failed protests. They worry about their families and friends who still live in Belarus (and some of whom are imprisoned). They worry about the Russian occupation of their land. They grieve for Ukraine. But apparently, that's not enough, and now we also have to deal with hate and discrimination based on our nationality. Without Putin, Lukashenko can't survive. Putin is the only one who supports him financially and keeps him in power. Lukashenko has sold Belarus to Putin to stay on his fucking throne. Putin knows Lukashenko has no other options, so he's using him and Belarus for this invasion. Belarusians have nothing to do with it. We have fought and are still fighting even if you don't see it. So please, do everything to help Ukraine and stop this horror, but leave us the fuck alone. We have enough on our plate. We don't deserve this shit, and it fucking hurts.”

  12. Eh, they aren’t a monolith, and even under a very heavy hand many are risking long jail sentences to protest. Yeah Putin is yet one more sociopath in a long line of them but there is still a lot of humanity in Russia, and that’s without the freedoms we enjoy. I don’t hold this against the average Russian.

  14. We have coyotes and wolves both in the area. The wild animals around here are still very wary of humans, so they don't really get that close to the cabin. Although there were a couple of coyotes that came up the drive a couple of months ago. They got to about 100 feet from the cabin before they turned around. Magnum went nuts when he smelled them the next morning and I followed their tracks in the snow for about about a mile before the got off the road and headed into the woods. Probably just scouts for a large pack that I've seen around all winter. I counted 18 of them when I surprised them on the road one night. Magnum is a smart little fucker. Smartest dog I've ever had. He just knows and stays close. You can always tell by watching how his body language changes when he smells predators. He'll do his thing if it's just a lynx or coyotes, but if he smells wolves he'll turn around and head back to the cabin. Refuses to take another step. He's a good alarm system. We've never lost a dog to the critters, but it 's a risk we've just accepted. Here's a wolf story for you... We were drifted in a while back. I had to park my work rig on the highway side of the snow drifts and walk about a mile and a half to the cabin. My dumb ass left my head lamp at the cabin that morning and I forgot to grab the pistol out of the truck before I started walking home in the dark. About half way home I heard an audible growl. My butt hole immediately puckered. No light, no firearm. I started singing the Eyes of Texas. That's the standard way I make noise in the woods so I don't surprise a bear in the summertime. Anyways I continue down the road home. I can hear at least two creatures following me, one on each side of the road. I can't see them, but I can hear their footsteps in the snow and I can hear them breathing. They break off about a quarter mile from the cabin and I get home. Go out the next morning when it's light and sure as shit find wolf tracks in the snow. They could of had me if they wanted me. They were just checking me out. They really want nothing to do with us. Still gets the heartbeat up though.

  15. They’ve been pushing the Georgia lab shit as well. It’s not new at all. Just recycled because didn’t fall for the Ukrainian Nazi bit. Meanwhile, from Russia— the latest issue of legendary Novaya Gazeta (New Gazette), a legendary investigative magazine that has had journalists killed. “Published in accordance with the Russian Criminal Code as Newly Amended.” Some symbolism: Swan Lake means “shit is fucked, yo”. In the Soviet Union, Swan Lake played on a loop after Brezhnev died, after Andropov died, after Chernenko died, and during the attempted 1991 coup. Someone may die or go to jail for this cover and image. Don’t believe that there aren’t courageous Russians.

  16. Ok, so seeing two pieces of pretty critical disinformation spreading related to the war. Both of them are also being spread by a very influential U.S. blogger who has been recruited as a Viktor Orban fellow (I wish I were making that up). I’m not telling you to go over to his Twitter and drag him Surly style, but I’m not telling you NOT to do it. Both of these are clearly Kremlin narratives and not useful idiot narratives. 1. The Mariupol hospital bombing was a false flag. The Nazi Azov battalion evacuated the building a long time ago, then started using it as a base. Then after it was bombed, they rushed to use crisis actors to get a propaganda win for the Ukrainians and bait us into World War III! The proof is that a very pregnant Mariupol area beauty blogger was in the photographs. There is of course no way that she was, you know, at the fucking maternity hospital because she is from Mariupol and super pregnant. Russian gargoyles and their trolls are now slamming her online. 2. The gotdamn bio-weapons lab. They’ve amped it up to 11- now it is a whole CHAIN of bio labs, where the Americans and Ukrainians were nefariously planning to create viruses that spread via natural bird migrations to Russia and that were targeted at ethnic Slavs. Also, of course, they were weaponizing COVID-19 and doing experiments on bats. And they escaped with all the evidence to Poland. Dirt bags! Anyway, here’s the Twitter of the American blogger who is getting paid by Orban and spreading this, he should be ratioed.

  18. Well put. I will say this, I hold the people of Russia and at the very minimum complicit of this situation. For 25 years they have turned a blind eye, or one at gun point, towards this inevitable situation. When this is all said and done, they will suffer, perhaps more than the Ukrainians for their inaction. Are they all bad people, of course not; but their continual inability to effect change within their own system makes them complicit in all this. They don't value democracy because they have never had the will to fight for it, and that's on them. In short here comes a big bag of dicks headed your way, eat em.

  22. Second hand story, from about 10 years ago so TFWIW but person swears it's true and I like it. Jerry and a group were hanging out in the bar at Al Biernet's one night. Jerry starts chatting up a lady and takes her out to his limo. Someone in group noticed and knew that she was actually a he. They tell Stephen who rushes out, stops the limo from pulling out, an argument ensues with Jerry throwing he/she out of limo. Stephen comes back inside and rejoins the group. Then Jerry comes back in, finds Stephen and gives him a big bear hug and says "boy...you just just saved me from gettin' cornholed."

  23. There are 4 ways to rig an election. 1) Voter fraud 2) Election fraud 3) Gerrymandering 4) Voter suppression Of these, voter fraud, by FAR, is the least effective in changing the outcome of an election due to the sheer number of conspirators required. Voter fraud is exceedingly rare and instances where it has changed the outcome of a statewide or federal election are non-existent. The GQP uses the false pretext of the least effective method of election rigging in order to justify their use of historically the most effective. So that's not parsing. That's the point.
