  2. Listening to the Dodgers/Mets game, they played β€œGod Bless America.” I love this country. I just don’t love the version being presented to us, and the world, now. But I desperately want this to be a brief dark period in our history. Not a tipping point from which there is no return. I have to believe sanity has a place in our future. I recently watched the Bin Laden documentary on Netflix and while W had his flaws, he seems like fucking Lincoln when compared to Trump. The infection the orange goon has unleashed on our country is more poisonous than any that has ever occurred in our nation’s history. He has sown division, hate, racism, chaos, anger and madness. And that has been his strategy. But is it ever going to return to some semblance of reason? For my sanity, I pray it will. I love this country too much to just give up.

  4. My grandad is buried in that cemetery. He served in WWII and took part in the Battle of the Bulge and its aftermath. After the war ended he spent nearly a year on cleanup in Germany and Eastern France. Since he had an armorer’s rating one of his jobs was to destroy M1919’s by shooting them into river banks for hours until the barrels melted. They didn’t have much ear protection and he was hard of hearing for the rest of his life. He died in 2021 at 100, and we finally had the funeral about a year later. It was a small group- me and my kids, my dad and his wife, my aunt and her family, and a couple of friends. They led us to a little pavilion, we all said a few words, they played taps, and folded up the flag. Then the Officer In Charge presented the folded flag to my aunt and said, β€œOn behalf of the president of the United States and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.” The last time my grandfather voted in a Federal election was when he voted for Joe Biden in 2020. It was the first time he had voted for a Democrat since Jimmy Carter in β€˜76. He said that 2020 was the most important vote of his life, and maybe the most important thing he ever did for his country.

  13. I served through Desert Storm in support of the 1st Armored Division, out of Germany at the time. I thank God that none of my close squad mates or even my company died in action or pre/post war. Thank you is all I can say to those that have passed before this day, especially during the act of war, regardless of the era. Their time on this earth was not wasted! Thank you for their service to our country. We are all in debt to their honor. Hook’em!!!

  16. β€œIt was the Pit Bosses problem, not Trumps. And those waitresses, I kept telling them one ice cube per drink. Not 2! Can you believe it? Why does someone need 2 cubes? And then the cleaning people. I was told they expected, what they like to call, a paycheck every 2 weeks. I know a lot of guests left valuables in the rooms, but they were never satisfied with just that. They wanted what I’m calling a salary. That’s a word I just came up with.”

  18. Only sort of related - I drive a Ford. My daughter was in town recently, and one day we pulled up behind a Cybertruck with one of those "I got it before I knew he was a Nazi" bumper stickers. I laughed, and she said, "Yeah that's funny, but what would be really funny is if you got one of those stickers."

  32. Since this whole thread started with a reference to Osama Bin Laden, it’s an interesting fact that Obama approved the Bin Laden raid knowing that it could fail just like the Jimmy Carter hostage raid, costing him re-election. Defense Secretary Gates and VP Biden both recommended not moving forward with the raid. But Obama did it anyway. That’s real leadership. He put his political future aside and did what was best for the country. What a novel concept.

  33. The problem isnt with the fucking assholes in DC, the problem is with the assholes known collectively as americans. We are collectively too fucking stupid to work our way out of this mess. The president of the United States takes a fucking oath to uphold the constitution, and a few months later openly muses that he isnt sure he has to uphold the constitution. Most Americans probably aren't aware that he even said it because they are too busy scrolling tiktok, and not enough of those that are aware of what he said even give a shit that our constitutional rights are now subjugated to the whims of the president. Burn it down and see what replaces it, because America is dead.

  34. The only person in my family that I'm personally aware of who died in service was my grandfather's younger brother, George Wolgamott (even though pretty much every male in my family served in the armed services). My grandfather, Don, flew B-17s but was so good they made him an instructor and told him he was unavailable for deployment. He was too valuable as an instructor. George and Don were two of 5 brothers. Don was second youngest. George was the youngest. They also had 7 sisters. Tenant farming community in Hartford, Kansas on the border with Oklahoma. Parents immigrated from Germany. Don and George were 1st generation born in the US (along with all their brothers and sisters). Don signed up the day after Pearl Harbor. George signed up when he turned 18. George wanted to be a pilot like his older brother Don, but his eyesight wasn't 20/20 like Don's. He ended up flying a prop reconnaissance plane over enemy lines in Europe, and was shot down by the Germans. Granddad always felt like if he could have deployed, he could have saved his younger brother's life. It doesn't make realistic sense, but that's always how he felt. I wish I could have known my grand uncle and the family he never had. I had two cousins. My Dad was an only child, and my Mom had one brother. Uncle Roka had two kids. Both served in the military. The older cousin, Rocky, wanted to be a pilot like his grandfather. He ended up retiring as a warrant officer as an instructor flying Apaches. He's still flying missions in Europe as a contract employee. My younger cousin, Brodie, served in the Army, deployed mostly in Germany. Got out after his single 4 year enlistment. Every Memorial Day weekend he would make a post on social media explaining to everyone in his social circle the sacred difference between Memorial Dad and Veterans Day, and tell the story about our grand uncle George. Brodie died almost 5 years ago in a motorcycle accident at the age of 50. Every Memorial Day since then I think of George, and I also think of Brodie, who did his part to remember our family member who gave his life in defense of his country. Thank you to George and to all the brave Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country regardless of conflict or even in peace time operations. This day is for you.

  35. Will it *ever* return to reason? In the very long run, I think there is still hope. But I will be 50 later this year. And I do not believe that this country is fixable in the next, say, 20 years. I believe that Fox News has won for at least a generation, and the cabal has only begun to scratch the surface of what they're up to. So, I am actively scouting out retirement destinations and learning Spanish. I cannot say that I ever loved this country. But I did not take it for granted, either. I don't go in for patriotism or religion, so I was never proud to be American, but I damn sure did feel lucky to be American. But, to me this is just a place. And places change, like everything else. It was a good place for most of my life, and I'm thankful for that chapter. But this country is morphing into a place that I don't want to be a part of. And no, I do not feel obligated to stay and fight for this place. It's just a place, and there are many others, and many of them are beautiful and cost a fraction as much to live in. So, I'll retire about 5 years earlier in one of those places, and I'll have a chapter there. And I'm looking forward to that. Because the place I grew up in is already gone. (None of this is meant to contradict the OP, whose feeling I also understand. Just spit balling a different take)

  36. I’d like to not be expected to stand for god bless America during the 7th inning stretch anymore, like we didn’t do for over 100 years before 2001. Actually is rather it not be played at all anymore during mlb games. I see people taking off their caps and hand over heart as if it’s the fucking anthem.
