  3. 36 years ago I was 11. One fall afternoon walking home from school, I took a slight detour and found myself standing under a bridge smoking a cigarette I stole from my neighbors parents. It was a Benson & Hedges because they were sophisticated like that. Emotionally hollow, I had friends, I played sports and yet no one knew me. I cried as I sank down against the concrete wall until I slid all the way into the ground. Sitting in the dark, my back up against a cold concrete wall, I sank further. There were the faint sounds of cars going by above. Finally my external reality matched my inside, in a dark, cold, lonely place with the world just going by. Then I said it. 11 years old, β€œI want to be a girl.” Before the Southern Baptists come out and scream, β€œsee, it’s a choice!!” I must say those are the words I muttered at a time when I had no idea what was what. There was no medical protocol, and if I said it to an adult I would either be patted on the head or sent for psych evaluation at the hospital. I finished my cigarette and put it out and walked home. A latch key kid at the time I was able to maintain the silence and solitude for a few more hours. Nothing had changed. Weeks maybe months later, I was in my room thumbing through the pages of my wall to wall set of encyclopedia Britannica volumes and by happenstance I was in the β€œT” volume. Usually stopping on countries to read and learn about their geography I just kept flipping pages until my eye caught a quarter page entry for β€œtranssexuals”. I read about Christine Jorgensen who was β€œonce a man and underwent sex reassignment surgery to become a woman” and I immediately knew who I was. I found the light! I kept reading and the last paragraph said most β€œtranssexuals” live in big cities like New York or San Fransisco and then the light flickered and disappeared. This unlucky suburban trans kid from Texas had no real way to make it to New York or San Fransisco as an 11 year old. So I closed the book, and cried myself to sleep. I didn’t tell anyone - not a soul - for nearly two more decades. that’s your typical gender dysphoria diagnosis more than 20 years ago.

  5. Good job, @Sbbruin. Today I went in for my supersoldier infusion, and the nurse said "Good news! You get your money back!" No infusion today, or maybe, ever. Turns out we are at the two-year mark, and the Little Monster has been down to pencil eraser size for some time. Doc thinks it's stable, and/or that my own immune system has been trained to smack it around. They are gonna keep me on my pills (Inlyta) for a while yet, and keep monitoring my numbers and giving me regular scans. If my pet comes back to life again, we'll whack it again, maybe with the same stuff. Lot to take in and I'm wary of getting hit by a car. Kinda feels like letting go of the rail at the skating rink.

  10. This city and state need to start investing in basic infrastructure. Which means we need to pay more taxes / higher prices for utilities. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. All the money we saved by not paying to maintain trees around power lines has cost us in inconvenience and hassle. And we end up paying for that tree maintenance eventually. No politics, etc., but this country’s (and especially this state’s) addiction to bare minimum taxes at the expense of basic maintenance have fucked us. It was always myopic, greedy bullshit. Trees over power lines are just the canary in the coal mine. Other neglected infrastructure is rotting on a longer timescale.

Honestly, fuck big international sport at this point, all of themβ€” IOC,FIFA, F1(FIA). They’re mostly PR for dictators now.

  16. We did some of that; and it's fucking worse!!!!!!!!!!! I'm 8th generation Texan, born in Austin, dad was born in Pflugerville and mom in Bastrop. In 2014, we bought our "final resting place" in Driftwood. The developer gave me the plats and I drove my F250 through the country to see what area looked like. We choose 2 lots covered w/ mature oaks, a couple of 4 ft diameter (~ 100-150 years old) and about thirty 2-3 ft diameter. The rest of the lot was covered with persimmon, cedars and algarita. We turned the house on the lot to face the line of large oak trees towards the south. The builders who bought 20-30 lots were pissed to holy hell that I got first pick of the lots, the corner with the big trees. We kept it natural, selectively removing small trees and trimming branches to optimize esthetics and habitat for the Hill Country critters. We also did not put in a lawn, because watering a large lot in the Hill Country is STUPID. Until 2 days ago, we enjoyed our little island covered with a canopy of mature oaks, that has served as a mini oasis for whitetail deer. Every spring, we have been blessed with new fawns born here, and every fall, trophy bucks have come by looking for a hookup. That literally came crashing down yesterday and today. These are the same twin trees, 2 years apart. February 2021 February 2023 Yesterday, Feb 1 Today, Feb 2 Every tree I have looks like this. I am crushed. I have no words to describe my emotions this morning.

He lives in Virginia and I rarely see him but I know he's very happy. But the fucking GUTS it took for him to do that back then. Especially as an Iranian. I've always admired him.
