  1. hate getting dragged into this because there is no right and wrong on all of this unfortunately...just posturing (lots of it sanctimonious) from every angle from largely unaffected observers leveraging this for entertainment and to pass the time. however, to this specific point...germany and japan were brought to heel by annihilation with literally (not figuratively) the most destructive force the world has ever seen and the complete and utter slaughter of civilians to devastating effect and subsequently, were effectively neutered for half a century by the rest of the world imposing violent threat. at least 25,000 people were killed in dresden alone. across all the bombing campaigns, at least 350,000 german civilians. 200,000-300,000 people were killed in hiroshima and nagasaki alone. what the world was willing to do to "rehabilitate" germany and japan far exceeded the atrocities of anything ever since. and there is a very strong and persuasive argument that they were justified...as well as strong and persuasive arguments that they were not. but at the end of the day, their societal "evil" was snuffed out by learning in the grossest possible way that they could not impose violence as effectively as their adversaries...and it was their fault. but if you are going to point to germany and japan as wonderful test cases of rehabilitation, you cannot ignore the violence perpetrated on them to bring them there...which is what israel would absolutely love to do right now. just keep that in mind while waxing poetic about the nature of humanity...particularly when you have never been faced with legitimate threats to survival. @SydneyCarton's post above generally captures to reality here imo. brisket and others are acting emotionally. no doubt about it. but they do pose a realpolitik inquiry that is just being conveniently ignored by those who have the luxury of projecting self-righteousness on this message board and saying "well i don't need to answer your question because i can't." no rational person wants civilians to die, that's a given. note: when i say rational person, that does not include the many pieces of shit we have on this board that get off to the idea of palestinian genocide. but if one accepts that hamas is strategically utilizing civilians as shields and that hamas has acted belligerently in a barbaric way...and then impose the notion of "you are not allowed to have any civilian collateral damage under any circumstances," then one is truly at an impasse. and so what is israel to do if one believes they have a right to respond...when the only response inevitably includes collateral damage due to the tactics of the adversary? dispassionately stating categorically and unequivocally that israel should not kill palestinian civilians does not make you righteous, particularly from the comforts of the other side of the globe. it is a basic position of any decent person and it is what any reasonable person believes. but if one adopts that categorical imperative in a context in which hamas has demonstrated a willingness to strike at your civilians violently and then retreat behind the walls of hospitals to avoid reprisal, then one is faced with the question...what can israel reasonably do? don't hide behind not being a "military strategist." you have to confront that reality: either israel can do nothing in service of avoiding civilian casualties at all costs given hamas's strategy and must just absorb the violence as a reprisal for their past sins (which are many)...or you have to allow for some gross consequences that will undoubtedly be abused by an emotional aggressor that has just been severely hurt. and of course, EVERYTHING i just said can be reasonably flipped on the other side in this particular scenario. to huckleberry and wildcat's point...if you are a member of an oppressed and abused underclass of society and you unjustly exist in a prison-esque state of apartheid for generations, one is faced with the realpolitik inquiry of do you demonstrate a willingness to impose violence en masse to your oppressors to impose change and are your barbaric acts justified by that? strong and persuasive argument for. strong and persuasive argument that you should also not indiscriminately murder children. it's tragically why this is so nasty and has been for a very long time. it is one of the worst manifestations of humanity we have conjured in our time. and unfortunately, it will continue to be until i become king and euthanize everyone on the planet besides me and all the italian women that look like monica bellucci, the spanish women that look like penelope cruz, the south american women that look like ana de armas. tldr: i love hot mediterranean and south american women and everyone else should leave them and me alone.

  2. She's coming home, y'all! My family was in the market for a lab puppy already. We have a 4 year old black lab named Rocco that we got through the Heart of Texas Lab Rescue (HIGHLY recommended, btw), and had already setup an appointment for early November to meet some black or yellow lab puppies with them. I clicked on the banner ad today and saw that a fellow poster who lived 15 minutes away had a yellow lab puppy that needed a home. That felt like a sign. We're in the market for a yellow lab puppy, and there's a poster down the street who needs to find a home for one. It's all coming together. We brought the family and Rocco down to meet this sweet girl and after a few short minutes of trepidation, she happily sought out and accepted pets from each of the four humans in the family. Brought Rocco out of the car to meet his soon-to-be new sister and they got along great. Rocco is typically a VERY enthusiastic play partner, so I was a little concerned about him being too high-energy for a somewhat skittish girl. But he calibrated his energy levels so well with her that it all just felt like a great fit. Thanks so much to @Felix and his lovely wife for taking this sweet girl in, caring for her, and finding her a new home. Which will be our home. She's gonna miss the acre of land to run around on and will have to adjust to our much smaller backyard. But she will be loved. She comes home tomorrow and I will update with pictures. Unless the wimmens in Felix's family decide they can't part with her, which would be understandable.

  5. In the opposite direction of a conversation pit. I'd like to see more enclosed Mexican style courtyards in the US with a big ass gate instead of a front yard. That way I never have to see my neighbors again but can still sit outside.

  6. When I was a stuntman I used to hang out there. One night a hot ass group of chicks came in and we proceeded to party. Sadly it ended up with me wrecking my car and one of the girls dying. They tried to hang me with manslaughter but I was sober as a judge. After that I laid low in Tennessee for awhile, which was a real fucking beating.

  7. a&m beating a nationally ranked Tennessee in Knoxville during the CBS game of the week is anything but a "no lose" for us. It may not cause the recruiting avalanche that beating Bama would have, but it would certainly help them. I hope they get blown out in the first half & Tennessee runs up the score in the second half with back ups & walk ons. Questions about Jimbo's future while media heads are constantly bringing up how stupid his contract is during their bye week would just be so great.

  8. I see many posts stating something like “nothing excuses what Hamas did, but…” this is what happens when you systematically oppress people. That’s not actually true. Don’t get me wrong, I would certainly be in the fight back camp, but not the rape and beheadings. Tibet has occupied since 1951, and they have not fired rockets indiscriminately at China, or raped any women, or beheaded any civilians. Crimea was occupied in 2014, and again, no beheadings or rape. France was occupied from 1940-1944, same outcome. Oppression leads to people fighting back, absolutely, but in no way does that excuse or explain committing atrocities against civilians. That is terrorism, and it’s continued use gives credence to the accusations of the other party.

  11. Not typically. We only have two hospital ships. I have long argued that we ought to have far more. They're former oil tankers that only cost about $200M to convert to hospital ships. And for the most part, they go around the world providing medical services to people in areas that have suffered natural disasters or other catastrophes. Aside from there being an obvious need for such vessels, they are hugely effective at bringing goodwill to the United States and increasing our soft power abroad.

  15. I'm an American Jew. I've visited Israel once but have no real connection to the country, no family over there, nobody that I remain in regular contact with, etc. Like many other American Jews, I'm sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and not a fan of how the Israeli government has handled that situation. May just be my limited perspective, but in recent years I've noticed a real shift in sympathy towards the Palestinians and a desire from the rest of the world for the Israeli government to figure out a solution that works. Yeah, that's all fucked now. I understand the frustrations coming from the pro-Palestinian side, but this is the worst thing that could have happened for your cause. I've never seen my Jewish friends this despondent. The pro-Israeli hardliners will use this for the rest of their lives as justification for whatever comes next and you can already see how countries all over the world are trying to outdo each other with their public support of Israel. I'm not here to argue fairness, as it is without question that what has happened to innocent Palestinians over the previous decades is not even remotely fair. But perception is the key to widespread change, and what Hamas has done in regards to perception is absolutely detrimental in the quest for peace.

  16. I have to tell you, a 9-3 regular season is a failure. Texas will be favored in every game left on the known schedule. 2 more losses to underdogs and arguably shitty to mediocre teams would be an indictment that the guy can't get it done on gameday. Winning every game is hard any team. Another random loss could occur, no doubt. Two? That's a problem and that would be noted across the entire base of fans, boosters and admins. Jungle drums would start to be heard faintly off in the distance and 2024 would suddenly be truly make or break, which I don't think is the case if Texas goes 10-2 or 11-1 and plays for the conference title.

  18. Yellow lab mix or maybe pure. Female. Vet estimates she is about 3 months old. She was dumped in the county near a friend's place. She's heartworm negative and she just got all her needed shots today. Looking for a good home. Super sweet. Quiet so far in the 3 days we've had her. Haven't heard her bark once. Acts like a lab. Loves to chase a ball. She's 38 lbs but will most certainly get bigger. 50+ lbs probably. Crate trained. Very social but a bit shy considering her experience. Haven't tried her around my other dogs yet because they are big and rough so not sure how she is with other dogs but I doubt it's an issue at this point. PM if interested. No fees. We just want to find this sweet girl a good home.

  19. This is a hard one for me to share any more thoughts outside of this post. I’m part Jewish and Lebanese on my dad’s side/English on mom’s. I like many others understand the plight of the Palestinian people and their suffering. I also understand where Israel is coming from as well. I’m not going to mess up this thread nor the one in the CR (since y’all are all busy solving world problems and pretty much mostly told me to fuck off in the Ukraine thread) but it is personal to me. It’s one thing when a government shoots off missiles or air strikes etc…and we’ve seen the tragic footage of that. It is quite another to see the bodies of murdered naked women being paraded around and spat on. I understand how people who have been oppressed will eventually fight back and with a vengeance but this other stuff is up close and personal and hard for me to process. I hurt for the innocents caught up in the middle of all this. I’m not trying to throw around judgment, btw, so I don’t need a GD lecture on Hamas Or anything else. As far as I am concerned, from articles I have read, they appeared to have been working with the Israeli government or have the appearances of doing so while all the whole time planning these attacks (yahoo and AP news were the articles I read.) I hope we learn more as to the why, what, how stuff as time goes on. hamas may or may not have had help from many countries or may or may not have been working with a faction of Bibi’s Israeli government or May or may not have been helped by Iran and so forth…but fuck Hamas. Period. my two cents isn’t really worth anything and like I said I’m not posting again in either thread so I don’t need a lecture. I don’t need a history of the shit explained to me. I read. AP, yahoo, the Guardian, Slate, so forth. Anyway, won’t post again since y’all are capable of solving all this shit like the bang up job in the Ukraine thread. Just very sad about all of this and wish there was something more I could do.
