  2. Well here’s my anecdote. I got let go from my job at a tech company that I’ve worked at for 10 years this morning. Oh well.

  3. Bobby dropped this in his update today: ”There’s a little positive chatter behind the scenes on recruiting. Texas is gaining some confidence on a pair of players currently committed elsewhere.”

  5. Well my brother who is the textbook middle child, 7 at the time, convinced my mother, who is a saint and all things innocent and good, to take us to see a "porky pig" movie. He must have seen a preview and knew what he was doing because on the opening scene of Porky's Revenge when PEE WEE's girlfriend flashed her boobs and then shows his cock to the crowd she yanked me by my arm and him by his ear all the way out of the theatre. This is the same brother who also convinced my mother, who would not buy us loud music because it would disturb my father, that Quiet Riot was considered classical.

  7. I remember the first time I yelled "BREAK HIS FUCKING NECK!" at a TX/OU game and an older woman in Texas gear looked at me with a horrified look on her face. Then I said "well I hope he recovers and has a good life but just can't play football anymore" and she just nodded in a way that indicated okay that's acceptable.

  8. CSB My wife’s great uncle treated JFK after the PT109 rescue in the Pacific. There is a picture of Kennedy with a kitten that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post. That picture is only half of the photo. The kitten was actually the uncle’s and JFK had adopted a puppy. The uncle never responded to requests for permission to use the whole photo so the Post ran with a cropped pic. the photo that ran. the whole photo:

  9. You methodically built up tremendous credibility on Surly over many years. It’s been an impressive run. But you just completely destroyed it all in one post. You are now on the level of Rocko, TxTow, and Helobious.

  10. If Baxter is cutting in a brace, his surgeon has most likely assessed that: 1. His ligamentous reconstruction was successful and has matured all that it needs 2. His brace wear is likely primarily for his confidence on the knee 3. He is medically safe to do everything he can push himself to do

  11. Are you a Futureman sock? First off, I love how you just assume Gibson hasn’t improved his skill set and ball control in his second year. The odds are it’s the opposite, but you’ll mark it as a guaranteed negative because you’re trying to be South Asian 6th Street. Jaydon Blue was the only RB who could do anything when our line sucked? Did you watch these games, Hindu Helobius? The back you’re describing is Wisner. Jaydon Blue never met a shoestring he didn’t let tackle him. Burton cites how it seems all the backs can catch out of the backfield, that our 2 injured backs are looking great on their way back, and the one of the rookies looks the part, and your take is “we’re fucked.” I’m starting to think you’re a white frat daddy who went to aTm and has been playing the Indian card for years as cover. Are you Liucci?

  12. It's not an issue of "wholesome." First off, Daily Wire is producing propaganda for kids. It might be some truly dangerous psyop shit. This is one of the most insidious features of your team. The educated world does not "indoctrinate" kids, it exposes them to ideas. Your ideas are repugnant, so they require indoctrination. Sesame Street was specifically designed to provide the kind of engagement that privileged kids got in preschool for disadvantaged kids. In other words, free preschool at home for poor kids. And yes, now Sesame Street is a moneymaker, just like the Muppets and I'm sure various other "franchises" created under the auspices of CPB. They in all likelihood would never have existed without a) funding from CPB and PBS and b) airing by PBS stations. Private funding would have been obsessed with whether they could sell enough ads for Count Chocula in their time slot.

  14. There is nothing wrong with the "best season opener ever" promo from Fox. Defending National Champions vs. the team they beat in the semi-final featuring the most hyped college QB in a decade or more fits that description. Great teams typically lose a ton of players to the NFL, so the finding their "identity" knock is dumb. Two clear blue blood programs ranked in the preseason top 5 to kick off Week 1 at 11am. The excitement level nationally is legit and the TV ratings will be through the roof. It is the best season opener ever. We've been waiting two decades for this shit, some of y'all need to embrace the arrogance and attention again.

  15. I wonder how many of the confused people in this thread who think public broadcasting (a purposefully non-profit enterprise) was funded for the same reason specific for-profit industries are subsidized (to help them get established so they can then become net providers of jobs, tax revenue, and general economic benefit down the road) think that the oil and gas industry should also be shut off from any subsidies. They're pretty established at this point, don't you think? Shouldn't we all agree that after decades of being pumped full of our tax dollars, they've had enough time to determine if there is a "real market demand for what they're doing"? For those keeping track, public broadcasting receives about $535 million per year in federal funding. In contrast, the oil and gas industry receives over $15 billion in direct federal subsidies (in addition to billions more from states), and implicit subsidies are estimated to be well over $750 billion annually. I assume the response from someone who defends these oil and gas subsidies would come in some variant of "it's much more nuanced than that", and I would agree. The same is true for public broadcasting, which has never been funded for the same reason we subsidize specific industries at the state and federal level. One might argue that we need the oil and gas industry to survive, that it's a defense issue as much as anything. That's a reasonable argument. But one could argue the same thing about public broadcasting. There is no greater threat to our democracy than a poorly educated, disengaged population. There is a particular group of people working hard to ensure that this very thing comes to pass, however, and if one's head isn't entirely up one's ass, the reason for this is abundantly clear. Based on the numbers alone, anyone who will defend the subsidies for industries such as oil and gas, which are perfectly capable of running a massive profit with no assistance from the federal or state governments, should kindly shut the fuck up about the pittance that goes to public broadcasting. I mean, those of us who enjoy fossil fuel-based products can surely just pay more to make up for the loss of billions in free money that industry receives, right? We can tackle the insurance industry next, if you'd like (hint: it's in the trillions annually and makes oil and gas look like child's play). You say you want to make significant cuts to federal spending that mean something and reduce waste? You say that for-profit enterprises should be able to survive in the market without government assistance? Most people, regardless of their political affiliation, would likely be in favor of these things. I've identified two industries in this post alone that would put trillions back in our collective pockets if they were forced to operate as truly capitalist enterprises. There are plenty more. But that's not what this is about, is it? It's time to stop hiding behind the complete bulllshit that this has anything to do with reducing spending. The party of fiscal responsibility no longer exists, if it ever did, and everyone who isn't a bumbling fool knows it. The OBBBA passing alone should be all the evidence a functioning brain needs to understand this. Stop playing fiscally responsible dress up and just admit you enjoy authoritarianism and crushing your perceived enemies under your boot heel. Why pretend otherwise? To help you sleep at night? Tough shit. Twenty-two percent of this country voted for this, and every last one of them should be held accountable for it, even those who have already come to regret their choice. The real blame, of course, lies in the hands of those who didn't vote at all and allowed such a small percentage of our population to destroy what has taken 250 years to build. We can't get that mad at the fools for acting foolish. It's the disengaged who are truly to blame, and now that we are getting rid of public broadcasting and getting rid of public education, there will be so many more disengaged Americans in the future to assist in the power grab. Congrats, I suppose, but if there ever was a Pyrrhic victory, this is it.

  16. They love to bring up Jamaal Charles. But the interview where he could barely speak was coming out of HS. Charles is a shy guy, and doesn’t like to talk. He was diagnosed as having learning disabilities as a kid. But has anyone heard him in the past 15 years? It’s night and day. That guy has really overcome a lot of struggles, before and after football. He’s a hero story and they laugh and point fingers. Fucking just the dumbest fucking cruel idiots.

  17. Washington, from the very first State of the Union Jefferson, in a letter to Edward Tiffin, a physician who became the first governor of Ohio, on the importance of the arts and sciences to developing and maintaining a free society (especially relevant to what is happening in America currently) And finally Madison who, along with Jefferson, is the founding father who aligns most closely with “borderline libertarian,” in Federalist 62 CPB and PBS / NPR embody one of the core aspirations of the founders of our country, and provide infrastructure critical for carrying it out. Gutting and dismantling them are direct attacks on our way of life

  19. I have a very, very special place in my heart for Shipley. It was one of the first places a departed uncle took me to when I first immigrated to Houston and tried for the first time a fresh-glazed donut. A donut of any kind! And to this day, a Shipley fresh-glazed is my all-time favorite. They remain a guilty pleasure and something I'll occasionally grab a dozen of when I visit family.

  23. From the article: "For nearly 60 years, CPB has carried out its Congressional mission to build and sustain a trusted public media system that informs, educates, and serves communities across the country. Through partnerships with local stations and producers, CPB has supported educational content, locally relevant journalism, emergency communications, cultural programming, and essential services for Americans in every community." Now, who would have a vested interest in these things coming to an end? The same people who are also trying to destroy public schools, perhaps?

  26. In the quiet of an offline conversation, Sarkisian is capable of expressing genuine disdain for the ATM football program. He’s not a fan of Elko either. A lot of it carries over from Fisher and Elko fucking the state of affairs for everyone while he was still at Bama. A lot of their bullshit about him with recruits and the media (feeding negative shit to their people in the media and the national guys) started when he was there and carried over to Texas. Fisher is a piece of human shit. Excluding Elko from that label for the time being, but he’s not some jolly kind man just because he’s fatter than Santa Claus. So it is funny to me that the aggie fanbase is so desperate to hate him. They have a pathological need to both deify their coaches and vilify the Texas coaches. Sarkisian will never say a negative thing about them in public, yet they’ll manufacture their anger because of some psychological shortcoming as a fanbase that only they possess. In any event, he gets them in ways it only took the bonfire game for Mack Brown to comprehend. I think he’s going to do everything he can to blow them out everytime Texas plays them.

  29. Six decades of contributing to what was great about America - educational programs, cultural programs, outreach to underserved communities and amplification of voices who were previously ignored. All gone, and now leaving NPR/PBS and their hundreds of member stations to try and figure out a way forward without a coordinating/funding body. Everyone who voted for this and cheers it can go, well, you know. None of this is making us a better country.
