Stampede

Spoiler

Texas will get its first round of official visits this week kicking off three big weeks in the summer leading up to the July dead period. Like last summer, Steve Sarkisian and his staff will start small and build up to bigger weekends as they go.

With several prospects considering summer decisions, these visits will be pivotal. More than that, these visits will help lay a foundation for the Texas staff moving into the fall. Last summer, 10 official visitors eventually became members of the Texas class despite taking their visits without being committed.

The on-campus recruiting staff has a year of official visits under their belt and will come into year two with a more concrete plan since they aren’t dealing with the uncertainty coming out of the COVID dead period like they did last year.

In this week’s edition of The Stampede, Horns247’s weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we set the table for the next three weeks and look at the pivotal battles Texas will fight for their top prospects.

JUNE 10-12
The big name during the weekend will be Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater running back Cedric Baxter. The four-star back holds 53 offers and is down to a top group that includes Texas along with Texas A&M, Florida, Miami and Alabama. Right now, Miami has some buzz, but Texas is in the thick of this recruitment because of the relationship Baxter has with Tashard Choice.

The Longhorns will try to be aggressive in closing with Baxter, but I expect the recruitment will stretch out until Baxter is able to make a few trips. Our best intel says that Texas is a serious contender in this race, but Miami has been able to make some early progress. From what I know, NIL will be somewhat of a priority for Baxter.

Spencer Shannon

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei tight end Spencer Shannon is also scheduled to be in town after being offered in the spring during the Orange and White Game. A large-framed in-line tight end who brings a lot to the table as a blocker and receiver, Shannon is looking to make a summer decision. He has already been on trips to UCLA and Washington and it seems like Texas could be the last trip he takes.

Shannon lived in the Houston area for a period of time before moving to California, so there is some familiarity with the state and university. Jeff Banks has a few different options at the position, but Shannon would provide a complete tight end prospect Texas could employ immediately.

Kahuku (HI.) linebacker Liona Lefau hasn’t confirmed a date as of yet, but he’s been saying early June and we’ve heard that this is the weekend he would be in. Lefau visited Utah over the weekend, and the Utes are seen as a power player in this recruitment. With a huge need at the linebacker position, Jeff Choate has logged a ton of air miles between the mainland and Hawaii in this recruitment. Texas is in the race, but they will need to make a big impression to have a shot at landing Lefau at a position of major need.

Mid-week visits can produce mixed results, but Texas will host one with a major priority in Colton Vasek. The Austin Westlake edge rusher is another promising prospect at a major position of need. Vasek visited Clemson over the weekend and will see Oklahoma before visiting Texas.

Vasek will head to Oregon after seeing Texas and has yet to schedule a date for a trip to Lubbock. This recruitment is one where it’s been hard to get much concrete information, but Clemson is home to former teammate Cade Klubnik while Oklahoma and Oregon have been able to catch his eye with defensive-minded head coaches.

JUNE 17-19
This will be the most anticipated weekend of the year with No. 1 overall prospect Arch Manning making his official visit and fourth overall trip to Austin. Manning just finished a trip to Georgia, and it remains to be seen if he will still visit Alabama. Florida and LSU are also connected to Manning, but this seems like a two-horse race at the moment between Texas and Georgia.

The Longhorns have been able to run in the lead pack from the beginning because of Steve Sarkisian and AJ Milwee who have been building a relationship with Manning since the beginning. Texas has gone from dark horse to a favorite over the course of the recruitment. This visit will be huge but might not necessarily result in a conclusion as Manning has talked about carrying the recruitment into the fall.

Jaquaize Pettaway (Photo: Nick Harris, 247Sports)

Manning’s teammate Will Randle will visit on the same weekend. Randle has been to Austin four times already coming during the spring game without Manning. Texas seems to be in a strong position with the Isidore Newman tight end and could look to close the deal on the trip.

The Longhorns will also host speedy wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway. Oklahoma has been able to emerge as the lead opposition for Texas, and Pettaway is coming off of a trip to Norman over the weekend. Texas also feels like they are in a good position as Brennan Marion was able to build a strong relationship with him over the spring.

Temple athlete Mikal Harrison-Pilot will be an interesting recruitment. The two-way star has expressed a desire to play receiver at the next level. California, Houston, Oklahoma and TCU are the other schools he’s considering, and Texas will have to show he has a legitimate chance of playing on the offensive side of the ball at the next level.

Trussville (AL.) Hewitt-Trussville defensive lineman Hunter Osborne will make his visit on this weekend as well after seeing Clemson and Auburn. The Longhorns offered late but were able to get an official visit. Tennessee will host him after he heads to Austin and the Longhorns will be in a tough battle to land him. The Longhorns are behind from a time perspective, but it’s been impressive to see how quickly they got into this race and the presence of former teammate Justice Finkley could help Texas make a move.

Sydir Mitchell (Photo: Shotgun Spratling | USCfootball.com , 247Sports)

Loganville (GA.) Grayson linebacker Jalen Smith will also be in Austin this weekend. Jeff Choate was out in Georgia at the end of spring football, and the Longhorns will look to put their best foot forward. The Longhorns are sorting out the top of the board at linebacker, but Smith who is considering Virginia, Tennessee and Pittsburgh will be an option depending on how some races work out.

Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek EDGE Blake Purchase is slated to be in town on this weekend as well. Purchase has been to Oklahoma and Iowa State and will see Washington and Oregon after visiting Texas. The Longhorns have a link through his former teammate Gunnar Helm, but Texas will be in for a fight to land one of the best defenders out west.

We’ve not yet confirmed, but Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell is another prospect who could be along on this weekend. Georgia has all of the momentum right now for the big man, but Texas was able to host him in the spring and will look to keep making progress in the summer.

JUNE 24-26
This headline for this weekend will be the offensive line unit. Kyle Flood has been recruiting the foursome of Connor Stroh, Jaydon Chatman, Ian Reed and Andre Cojoe hosting them together at several times throughout the spring. While Texas is in good position for each of these prospects, they will have to wait out some other visits. Texas A&M and Arkansas are two schools to watch and Stroh already visited Auburn. Oklahoma is trying to make a move with Chatman while Texas will have to stare down Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin for Reed. TCU and Houston are the two main competitors for Cojoe.

Anthony Hill (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)

The two top linebacker targets on the Texas board will also be in town with five-star Anthony Hill visiting alongside four-star Marlin linebacker Derion Gullette. Texas A&M is in the pole position for Hill, but that recruitment could definitely go into the fall. USC, Alabama and Oklahoma are the other schools factoring in for him. Gullette’s visit will be an important one for Texas.

The Longhorns have been able to make some moves with the small-school dynamo and he has the type of athleticism and ability to make a big impact at the position. Oklahoma already took its shot at Gullette and Ohio State will host this weekend. Texas will get him the last week of the month with Texas A&M and Alabama set to get visits at some point as well.

Friendswood EDGE Braylan Shelby will also take his official visit that weekend. An NFL body at a position of need, Shelby has been high on Texas since being offered in January. USC and Texas are the two schools with visits scheduled, but Florida State and Tennessee will also factor in. This is a recruitment where Texas has the advantage of going last and could push to close the deal with the athletic pass rusher.

Five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell is also scheduled for an official visit. It will be interesting to see if the Alabaster (AL.) Thompson prospect ends up making the trip. Texas hasn’t been a huge factor in this recruitment, and conserving visits will be a concern with class limits going away. If Texas is able to get him, perhaps they can make a big enough impact to become a factor in the race for the elite corner.

Jaden Greathouse

Austin Westlake wide receiver Jaden Greathouse and Lucas Lovejoy wide receiver Kyle Parker are expected to be in on the final weekend as well. The Longhorns will need to outlast Notre Dame who made a big impact on him during the spring, but Texas has been a favorite for a while with him. Parker is another player that will be interesting to watch. He seemed to be close to a commitment during the spring, but a lot will depend on the rest of the receiver board.

Blake Gideon will have a busy weekend on this date hosting out of state safeties Jayden Bonsu, Derek Williams and Makari Vickers. Ohio State has been pegged as the pick for Bonsu, but Texas will get its chance after securing an official visit. Williams has been to campus several times and was in Austin as recently as last week. Texas is an interesting contender in the race for the four-star safety from New Iberia (LA.) Westgate with Alabama and LSU seen as the top competition.

Vickers has been to Austin twice on his own during the spring. This is a race where Texas is in a better position than anyone thinks. The Longhorns are expected to host Vickers during the final week, and we will have a better idea of where things stand following that trip.

Gerry on his RPM:

The Texas Longhorns are in search of back-to-back top 5 recruiting classes under Steve Sarkisian. One of the keys to building the momentum to achieve the goal is winning in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

I’ve logged a new On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine pick for the Longhorns to land a commitment from wide receiver Johntay Cook II. There have been multiple sources with close ties to the On3 Consensus 4-star relay that Cook continues to be a heavy lean to Texas with a decision inching closer and closer.

Cook, the nation’s No. 36 overall player in the country in the On300, made an official visit to Ole Miss over the weekend with Michigan scheduled for June 20-22. The possibility remains that Cook will also make his way to Austin June 17-19 when No. 1 overall Arch Manning makes his official visit to Texas. A June official visit to Oregon is also in play. Texas A&M also remains in the mix for the talented route runner with high-end footwork.

Cook is the No. 47 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus. The On3 Consensus is a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 8 wide receiver, and the No. 7 junior in the state of Texas.

Johntay Cook II scouting summary:

Smooth-moving receiver who is one of the better route-runners in the 2023 cycle. Shows the ability to tempo and toggle speeds within his routes. Can win at all levels of the field. Has long arms with a 6-foot-4 wing-span at 5-foot-11.5. The length helps create a large catch radius. Productive and efficient as a junior while facing top competition at one of the top talent-producing high school programs in Texas. Scored 18 touchdowns on just 38 receptions as a junior. Will need to continue improving on his reliability as a pass-catcher and eliminate concentration drops.

Sam Spiegelman on Jordan Matthews:

Four-star Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn cornerback Jordan Matthews was en route to his first official visit to Ann Arbor when he picked up a long-awaited offer from Clemson. Much like his recruitment, there have been plenty of nuances for Matthews of late.

Sources close to the On300 cornerback gave positive reviews of Matthews’ time in Michigan over the weekend. One well-informed source told On3 that the Wolverines are now “a top-three” team for Matthews along with Texas and Tennessee. Currently, the Longhorns are leading the way for the standout Louisiana defensive back on the On3 Recruiting Prediction by a significant margin.

Texas has undoubtedly been the most consistent team pursuing Matthews since he was an underclassman. Terry Joseph has refused to take his foot off the gas and has gotten the four-star cornerback to The Forty Acres as much or more than any campus to date. Sources point to Tennessee, however, as the team that has started to “push the hardest” this spring and summer. Matthews is currently putting together plans to make his first trip to Knoxville this summer — likely for an official visit.

There are three schools squarely at the top for Matthews as June arrives, but still no timeline in place for a decision. Matthews will graduate in December but has no precise timeline in place at the moment. Part of the laid-back approach is due to the handful of teams that are still hanging around in his recruitment, including Stanford, Alabama, LSU and now Clemson.

Clemson has ground to make up with Matthews, but the offer is definitely noteworthy, sources tell On3. Stanford may be a bigger threat and the On3 Consensus’ No. 14-ranked cornerback should know more in that department in August.

Additionally, Alabama has been coming on strong with Matthews in recent weeks after watching him in the Woodlawn spring game. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder boasts speed, length and instincts, and is coming off a very strong track season, which has the Tide taking a closer look at the Louisiana standout. An offer from the Tide would certainly shake up his recruitment, sources suggest. One other X-factor moving forward is LSU. The Tigers have fallen behind schools like Texas, Michigan and Tennessee in recent months, but are bracing to make a strong push for the legacy recruit, sources tell On3.

In other words, things may be picking up in a big way for Matthews, the No. 140 overall player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Each school is allotted 56 official during that year's recruiting period. If I counted right, that's 29 of the 56 right there.

They're not fucking around with the June period. They will have a complete story about how players at Texas benefit from NIL more than anywhere else, without making anything specific for any recruit. Let's see how it goes.

I heard Brian Kelly in an interview this weekend say that the first thing a visitor asks when they sit down with coaches at LSU these days is "tell me about how your NIL program works."

I assume this pitch be night and day vs the NIL stuff we were pitching last summer? Glad Sark learned some valuable lessons last summer, hopefully we can do better in the season.

I thought LSU visitors would first ask Kelly for their dance montage.

Before someone asks for it, here's the Fong "article" on Arch Manning's UGA visit.

Short version:

(I suppose the article not having anything hyperbolic is somewhat positive.)

Five-star QB Arch Manning has another great visit to Georgia

Steve Wiltfong

Spoiler

Five-star QB Arch Manning has another great visit to Georgia

Steve Wiltfong

New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman five-star quarterback Arch Manning was on the field at 6 a.m. Monday morning for his school’s first workout of the summer. The Top247’s No. 1 ranked prospect in the 2023 class was fresh off his first official visit to Georgia over the weekend.

“He came out and ripped it today, threw with his teammates and had a good first workout,” head coach Nelson Stewart said.

Manning is in a key stretch with his recruitment as he begins to make some more rounds on the trail, but his main priority is leading Isidore Newman on another deep run in the state playoffs next fall, ultimately working towards trying to win a championship.

“He was rockin and rollin and spinning it, right back at it,” Stewart stated.

It was rockin and rollin in Athens with all the star power checking out the defending National Champions over the weekend and Georgia made another strong impression on the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Manning. It was his fourth time checking out the program, school and town as a recruit.

“He had a great trip,” Stewart said.

Manning obviously got a chance to sit down and talk with head coach Kirby Smart, assistants Todd Monken and Buster Faulkner and several other staffers. Manning hung out with players on the team other recruits on campus and continued to soak everything in.

“He had a great time with everything he did with his dad,” Stewart said.

“He loves Athens, he loves the coaches, he likes the players, I think the whole experience. He’s gone back and they’re doing a great job recruiting him. He’s enjoyed every trip he’s had there. All positive. Every time he goes, all the layers.”

Friday Manning will be at LSU with his teammates before heading to Alabama for his official visit right after. Texas has an official the weekend of June 17. This will be his time in Baton Rouge since Brian Kelly and his staff were hired. The stops in Tuscaloosa and Austin will make the fourth time he’s been there as a prospect. Manning does not have a timetable for a college decision and has talked about taking his process into the fall.

“He’s trying to enjoy his officials,” Stewart said. “It’s a fun time for him. He’s in a good spot and he’s having fun.”

Heading into his final prep campaign, Manning has thrown for 6,307 yards and 81 touchdowns with another 742 yards rushing and 19 more scores.

Five Texas targets that could accelerate their decision timeline

Five Texas targets that could accelerate their decision timeline

Hudson Standish

As we dive head first into the Texas Longhorns' first official visit weekend hosting Mater Dei's Spencer Shannon, Edgewater (FL)'s Cedric Baxter, and potentially a couple of other official visitors, I decided to take a lot at our perceived timelines for Texas targets with an eye on which players could move off their decision date a la Deandre Moore. Here are five names to monitor through the official visit season.

El Campo RB Rueben Owens

When Mike and I visited El Campo in April the word around Rueben Owens was that an August decision could be in the works. That decision date quickly was rumored to be extended into the fall and now there is a decent amount of uncertainty regarding when the nation’s No. 1 running back will announce his decision.

Considering the initial plan for a summer decision, plus Owens’ propensity to make a splash I’m leaning towards this timeline being accelerated. There have been a ton of swings in momentum in this recruitment, but at the moment most of the chatter seems to be with schools other than Texas. I wouldn’t start to hit the panic button yet, as Texas sources have maintained confidence about landing Owens or Baxter and there will likely be more momentum shifts for the El Campo standout in the future.

Langham Creek WR Jaquaize Pettaway

Pettaway mentioned that he could take his recruitment into the fall, but I’m fairly confident we’ll see a decision after he gets done taking his official visits.

I’ve slowly moved with Pettaway over the last six months from thinking Texas has a chance, to liking Texas over the field, to now believing that the Horns are in the driver’s seat heading into visit season especially considering that the Langham Creek speedster will be paired with Arch Manning on his official. Oklahoma and Ohio State are two other schools that are in the mix with Pettaway, with Alabama always lurking for the Yellowhammer State native.

Shiner ATH Dalton Brooks

Brooks is the recruit I’m least confident will accelerate his timeline as he’s been locked into a National Signing Day decision date since the jump. However there is one school that could potentially get Brooks to accelerate his timeline in Texas A&M.

Texas and Alabama both would consider it a win if Brooks started his senior year football campaign as an uncommitted prospect.

Temple ATH Mikal Harrison-Pilot

Harrison-Pilot is another national signing day commitment timeline player that could end up moving his date to the summer. With MHP this could be due to his own process winding down or coaches pressuring him to secure a spot in the class at his preferred position of wide receiver.

Mansfield Timberview OL Andre Cojoe

I feel pretty confident that Mansfield Timberview giant Andre Cojoe will make his commitment known before the start of fall camp.

Mike at Night: What to know on Arch Manning following his first visit

(When 'ol Streets writes " What to know ... ", it really is a question without the question mark.  He's actually asking us.)

Mike at Night: What to know on Arch Manning following his first visit

Mike Roach

I checked in with sources regarding five-star quarterback Arch Manning coming out of his official visit weekend to Georgia and what lies ahead for the nation's No. 1 player.

It should first be stated that the Manning camp has played this pretty tight so information will be at a premium. Those closest to Manning wish to let the visits play out before talking a lot about them. I talked to a source on the Georgia side who said the visit went really well as always, but there wasn't a ton of revolutionary intel coming out of Athens.

247Sports' Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong dropped some notes on Manning today with a few looks at what's upcoming. Manning will see LSU this Friday on an unofficial, but the most noteworthy item is that he still plans on visiting Tuscaloosa for an official visit to Alabama this weekend.

When Eli Holstein committed to the Crimson Tide, many assumed that would eliminate Alabama, but the desire to visit anyway is interesting. I still think this race likely comes down to Texas and Georgia, but I can't officially eliminate Alabama if Manning hasn't.

Following those trips will be what we presume to be his last official visit. Manning will see Austin on June 17 before attending the Manning Passing Academy the weekend after. The biggest question for me is will this recruitment end before the season? The more it goes, the more talk there is that Manning could extend to the fall.

I wouldn't expect a ton of earth-shaking developments between now and the time Manning lands in Austin. The recruitment just hasn't gone that way and I don't expect it to change all of a sudden. The waiting will be the hardest part for fans, but that's where we stand as of now.
