Theft in California is a misdemeanor

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.  A lot of thefts are crimes of compulsion (addiction, something similar) or impulse.

Those people aren't going to be deterred or encouraged by whether it's a felony or misdemeanor, or adjustments in penalty range.

I suppose some thefts are professional-level.  Might make a difference there.  But those thefts probably are burglary or robbery, as well.

I may have missed it, but it appeared the article didn't say what the percentage in the rise of theft was. Just that there was a rise and then a lot of anecdotes.

This article suggests that non-auto theft crimes actually dropped a bit. https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Prop-47-is-linked-to-increase-in-auto-thefts-12989137.php

The article may be correct in general, but I'd like to see some stats and empirical data.

If you are in Texas, it's coming.

If you’re right, it will take several decades to get that far left in Texas.

I fully expect a New York 1990’s type reaction to the absurdity of this type of crap.  Probably take 20 years.  Typhus filled homeless camp and decriminalized theft won’t be tolerated indefinitely.

Maybe, but it's happening already. Just look at the cities and suburbs.

Great,  the political pendulum constantly swings.  It probably would be good for Texas long term.  Just like the entire west coast needs a dose of something besides single party rule.

Read a great article about a package thief in SF a few weeks ago.  Cant remember what publication but it really did a good job of highlighting the crime, victims and the issues facing the perpetrator.

But theft being a misdemeanor is all instances?  Um, no.

Newsflash: California is a fucking mess of progessive wetdream unicorn politics.

It will get worse before it gets better.

And the 5th largest economy in the world...seems those progressing wetdreams have been working so far.

Alabama is the conservative wet dream...how's that working out?

Coincidence no. Merely pointing to the fact that California’s physical location affords it numerous benefits that have helped it become an economic powerhouse. I’m sure plenty of conservatives live in California and have attributed to its economic success.

40 million people.

Alabama with 40 million people and no per capita gdp growth is top 15 global economy.

Although none of that is really the point.  That argument presupposes that California has always been as liberal as today.

If Alabama had 40 million people we'd have to scrap the military to pay for their welfare.

Bush I was the last GOP candidate to win California, and by today's standard he's be branded a RINO libtard.

So what’s your point?

California had a huge economy? and is currently deep blue?  So fucking what.

I never said emulating Alabama would be a good thing.

keep up the self-congratulatory liberal march towards socialism, it will work this time.  I just know it, especially if we can get that 100 billion from Gates. That will keep the whole thing funded for 12 days. Not sure what you’re going to do on Week 3.

In terms of trends, property crime in California (of which larceny theft is 65% of the total) has generally been in decline.

crime-trends-figure-1.png

https://www.ppic.org/publication/crime-trends-in-california/

Quote

The statewide property crime rate decreased in 2017.
The 2017 property crime rate of 2,491 per 100,000 residents is down 2.1% from 2016, and only 1.3% above the 50-year low of 2,459 in 2014. Like violent crime, property crime increased dramatically between 1960 and 1980—from 3,140 per 100,000 residents in 1961 to a 50-year peak of 6,900 in 1980. But the property crime rate fell in the 1980s and ‘90s, and by 2011 it was down almost 63%. California’s property crime rate was above the national rate (2,362 per 100,000 residents) and ranked 25th among all states. Of all reported property crimes in California in 2017, 65% were larceny thefts, 18% were burglaries, and 17% were auto thefts.

So it would appear to me that in spite of reducing the chance of shoplifting resulting in a felony conviction, there has not been a resulting uptick  in crime. I have to assume that felony convictions result in a higher chance of jail time, and hence a greater expense to the state. Without further research in the matter, my first take would be that this is decent public policy, and frees up resources for violent crime.

The  Fox News article posted above provides no link to any statistics to back up its claim that crime is up across the state. The numbers don't seem to back that up, which is strange, because its not like FoxNews to blatantly misinform their base about shit that advances their narrative. If crime is up specifically in the Bay Area(which it is), it probably has more to do with the ever increasing cost of living, which has fuck all to do with the policy Fox appears to be blaming.

That areas with liberal governance outperform those with conservative governance.

You know the US is already a socialist country, right?  Unless of course your taxes are exempt from support the military, the roads, schools, libraries, social security, medicaid, medicare, police, fire departments etc., etc., etc.

And, by the by, most of the posters on here are only "liberals" in the sense the the GOP has moved so far right that it's become a mockery of itself.  I voted straight ticket Dem for the first time in my life last week.

In CA, you get up to $950 before it’s a felony, but I think in Texas you get up to $1,500.

Right.

But don't expect a Republican to take the literally 5 seconds it took me to verify the limit in Texas when there's a chance to point and laugh at how stupid those commie libtards in California are.

Roads, schools, military, libraries, fire department and police are not socialism.  Disingenuous liberal canard.

Neither are any of the other things that republicans are screaming about.  “Socialism” means total state or collective ownership of the means of production, as opposed to private ownership.

“Welfare” or “entitlements” for the olds, poor and sick and needy? Not socialist. Fire departments, cops, EMTs, public roads? Not socialist. Voter education efforts, public research funding, public television and radio? Not socialist. Subsidizing agriculture or industry, “bailouts” in times of trouble, even? Nope, not socialist. Emergency disaster funding and management? Not socialist. Public schools? Not socialist. State protection of banks and financial infrastructure? Not socialist. Regulations that don’t involve government owning the means of production?   Nope, nope and nope!

You can argue that any of these functions are not the proper role of government but if you put those arguments in terms of “capitalist” vs. “socialist” terms,  you don’t know what any of the words you just said actually mean.

Good post.

I think you could argue with a straight face that those things you list are in fact socialIST, but not socialISM.  The -ist suffix meaning tending toward or having characteristics of, rather than being the real deal.  But if you adopt that connotation, then highways and public schools and stuff are absolutely socialist.

Lulz I love these threads. California's demise has been predicted for years and because of a variety of librul policies. I am still waiting for the high taxes and bums to take us down! It's coming, just wait!

Any “going down” in the near future will be directly related to the tax reform. Revenue will be up(no deduction), but some high earners and corps are leaving.  TBD if California can/must  replace those in rhe medium term.

Do you know how long the "rich people leaving California because of high taxes" talking point has been around? I'm still waiting for it to actually happen. Meanwhile, 44% of millennial millionaires live in California. 44%!

France is a progressive wet dream....how's that working out? Especially with minimum wage laws, mandatory vacation, mandatory maternity leave, etc.

Here are some tidbits about France just incase you didn't know:

GDP in 2008 $2.9 trillion, today $2.5 trillion. vs US in 2008 $14.7 trillion, today $19 trillion

Unemployment rate of 8.4% steady since 2012. vs US at 3.6% with exponentially larger population.

It works both ways brah.
