Why was there a massive rush to buy food? Water I get, as we don't know when it's coming back. Stuff like batteries and cold-weather gear, that makes sense too. And some people undoubtedly lost a lot of refrigerated stuff to spoilage. And, finally, it's been a few days since some people were able to get to the store.  But even so, why did people buy EVERYTHING instead of their normal weekly-or-so resupply?

First - I am still a travel trailer 78759 survivor... so far.  Thankfully I have a stay ahead of the herd survival instinct.  My wife hasn't thought I was this hot since I was swimming 10K meters a week.  The Generator, propane, and travel trailer has given more than a few "you are the man" quips.

Now the BITCH - Apparently the blip of 20 minutes of power Wednesday was recorded as "power restored."  I checked to see my grid today, and wasn't even reported as an outage.  I entered the information like 4 times this afternoon starting about 2 pm.  I finally saw my outage as being "reported at 7:28 pm this evening.  Again i feel lucky but fuck... I called in three days ago.

GOVERNMENT - The problem with people in Government thinking privatization is the solution to everything. Is that GOVERNMENT is supposed to take care of the other 10-15% of whatever unprofitable market needs support for the overall wellbeing of the citizenry. But hey, all you needed do was hear how it was all the fault of the "disaster of green energy" to know where the bread is being buttered. GOVERNMENT has to build those pesky fucking dams that allow places like Houston and New Orleans to exist, for example.  Power, water and roads are the BASICS of why we have governments that we allow to tax us.

No private business in the fucking world is ever, ever, ever, going to base their business model on the smallest 5- 10% emergency slice. Simply because that would be fucking stupid as shit from a business perspective.  Elected Government officials thinking that a model that does not allow for an accounting entry for that 5% scenario is why we are fucked today.  THE GOOD NEWS IS WE ARE NOT GOING TO NEED TO WAIT A COUPLE WEEKS AND SEE NEIGHBORS KILL EACH OTHER OVER FOOD OR WHATEVER WHILE THE ERCOT/STATE GOVERNMENT BRAINTRUST PONDERS RESTARTING THE LARGEST EVER ELECTRICAL GRID COLLAPSE...  so there is that. And to be honest... that is fucking HUGE!!!

Woah there buddy, that bolded part sounds a lot like socialism and we don't take kindly to that in these here parts. Can't have the government interferin' with the holy Invisible Hand, the Hand knows what is best. The purpose of government is to concentrate wealth, power, and privilege at the top, and put all the responsibility, risk, and consequences on those at the bottom.

panic lead to A run. There were lines to get in to groceries from what I could tell. So more demand on that one day than probably several days combined. Probably lack of stockers and products to refill the shelves.

I am in 59 near fire oak.  out for 40 straight hours and almost 100 total over 7 days.   I have called multiped times to record our outage.  other side of the street 50 feet away has power.  where are you seeing the outage reported online?

You are my neighbor for sure.  The split for us is on Oak View with one side having power and one side not.  But the fucking outage not being on the grid pisses me off.  I was glad my friends near Caraway Elementary got power back, but that also meant the broken pipe discovery.  Elevation in the area means whether or not you have any water pressure.  Apparently I am just low enough to still get flow at the sink... sort of like and old guy at a football game urinal.

Just sucks. Here is map, with center near DK https://outagemap.austinenergy.com/external/default.html

If you are in Houston and need a good, fast and honest plumber, hit up Jesse (don’t have his last name, I know, I know). +1 (956) 784-2981.

He fixed three leaks in a copper line for me today. I was referred to him by a friend who owns over 10 rental homes and has used him for those as well as a couple of his businesses. He does HVAC and plumbing.

So winter crisis brings out necessity and awkwardness.
The power at my girlfriend’s house is finally on, just as I lost mine. Her ex-husband and his wife (the younger woman whom he left her for) have a 4WD jeep and just picked her up with her two kids to bring them to my girlfriend’s house because the power and water in the ex’s house are now out. My girlfriend invited her ex and his wife to stay at her house, thinking/hoping they would decline, but they said yes. Needless to say, that whole relationship is not entirely pleasant, so I sent my girlfriend back with some tequila to help dull the tension in the house.

Go on..

This or a simple angle stop will do the trick until you can get it fixed correctly. I have a few on hand, but will be buying more spare supplies once this is over just in case.

Shark bites are great and can be used as permanent solutions, +1 if you can find any

Will check out the options tomorrow....but from what others have told me, there aren’t any good repair options/tools available around town. I’ll look, but we’re also going with an alternate solution: going to have a relative out of state buy some pipe tape, shark bites, and clamps tomorrow morning and fedex for same day delivery.

We don’t need all those things, but figure some friends, neighbors, and strangers will, so might as well send us 10 instead of 1. We’ll share whatever we don’t use.

Good idea. Nextdoor has actually been useful during all this. People trading or donating what supplies or know how they do have. It's been good to see actually.

We were gonna just say fuck it to the house and go to Cancun today, but decided to hang back and help distribute firewood to those that needed it in the area.  Tomorrow morning gonna boil the hell out of some massive containers of water and make stout coffee to walk over to the nearby firehouse since they got better shit to do than watch a boiled pot (as the old saying goes).  but I dunno, feels like a Cancun day 'cause I;m a fucking asshole .

There will be lots of scale & debris flaking from the interior of the pipes

NB, for those of you doing this, it's going to fuck up any single-handle faucets you have, in all likelihood.  Most have a valve "cartridge" that is fairly simple to replace and not very expensive.  But until you do, hot may be cold and vice versa and the faucets may drip and leak.  Also, some have debris screens where the faucet hot and cold connects to the water lines.  If you aren't flowing well, you can clean those off/out like you used to on an old school aerator.

That's fucking crazy.  ONCOR in Dallas was telling people not to bother reporting outages.  Clearly they knew who was out and who wasn't without relying on reports.  If it was a tree or something mechanical that might be different.

Something is way the fuck off about Austin's electrical infrastructure.

Many stores were closed, supply trucks were unable to get on the roads, HEB canceled curbside for many people this week, many people without power are reduced to buying food that doesn't need to be cooked, etc.

And then the water dying on us.  I hit up our local Randall's today hunting food that didn't require water to cook and/or dishes that needed to be cleaned.

We will be better prepared next time.  I think having water until the end made us lax.

No idea about any “standard.” Our house was built in 84, and the pipe at issue is a 5/8.

I keep having to remind myself it's just Thursday.  We haven't had it as bad as many of you, but it feels like a week or more has gone by with this crap.

When I was discussing delivery dates for plumbing supplies, I thought today was Friday. Seriously. It’s Blursday. I have no fucking idea what day it is, and I didn’t yesterday either.

this sounds like beginning of the "clean up on aisle 4"  that it could have been so much worse if ERCOT hadn't acted so you customers are so lucky.

Do you also congratulate drunk drivers when they don't hit anything going home from the bar? ERCOT should have required producers to winterize, and the RRC should have done it's fucking job to ensure that producers actually followed best practices.

They don't deserve kudos for narrowly averting a disaster that they positioned the grid to be less prepared for. They narrowly avoided a disaster of their own making, hooray!!!

Kinda what I was thinking as I read that too.  Pretty much everything that I have read that ERCOT did in the days and weeks leading up to this seems pretty counterproductive to me.  They act surprised that it got cold in Texas in February.  I keep reading over and over about how the equipment wasn't made to handle the extreme cold.  I just don't get that.  I know in my job we purchase equipment so robust that even the most extreme scenarios will be covered. How the fuck do they not have a game plan for extreme cold in Winter?  You know, when it's known to get extremely cold from time to time.  I'm starting to wonder if Cal McNair is running ERCOT too.

zero 4 corner testing obviously.

mid level ERCOT manager Bob  "so I was looking back about 40 years and we had a winter event where for 10 days there were sub freezing temps and a lot of it state wide, should we model or run a scenario on that with our producers/supply chain/new energy technology given the massive influx of people to Texas in the last 4 years?"

ERCOT Board member from Michigan "Uh yeah, Bob, let the grown ups talk. It doesn't get that cold in Texas anymore, that was 40 years ago.  We're good.  Now next on the agenda where is the April Executive team building event going to be?  Pebble, San Diego, Cancun?"

I just found this crazy breakdown of what happened in Austin, not sure if it's been posted here yet

TLDR: clown fiesta so bad that the Austin grid slowed down from 60hz to 59hz at the worst of the gap before the extreme load shedding. At that point, it means the physical machinery was so overloaded that it literally slowed down. It's a miracle the entire statewide grid didn't die with such a big section losing sync

Great link. Thanks for sharing. Another cool link I found in the comments shows time series of Ercot data. Some Reddit user put it together right after shit was hitting the fan.

Just as a data point, ONCORs outage map is shit also.  I think it is based on reportage and they flat told people don't bother.  I don't think it ever showed our area out.

Since I have been without electricity for much more than 100 hours, and my hot water is now flowing a bit, I am celebrating with this post on page 100...

Another day of, water for in laws toilet, find some more gasoline (costco) try to find another bottle of propane as I just put the last of my 4 bottles in the Trailer a little while ago as I woke up cold in there. Chip away at my driveway ice.  Spend an hour or so chipping away at my In-laws ice on their driveway, as the MIL needs to get her pain pump refilled. As without that drip from the pump a broken back sort of hurts a lot.  But with her on a walker, I am very worried about the driveway not thawing, and me needing to try and get her to step up into my 4x4 truck, will be an exercise in both falling danger and excruciating pain.  S a full day of fun!!!!

Hope I can get the power back, just to try and heat up the house and pipes.  But even that scares me. It's funny I KNOW I have several copper fitting caps, but damned if I know where they are, but they are somewhere in my garage.  This wether situation has made think about consolidating any of my plumbing shit.  I normally buy extra fittings, just to save a potential second trip, so I need to get all my shit together for myself, or to be able to help somebody.

Good luck today all!  I guess the good news is I am sort of special as one of only 16,000 or so Austin folks still without power.
