Fucking hero. Was he prepared because of all of the public notices?

He actually said that's exactly what saved him and his family.  They received the alerts and he grabbed his gun on the off chance.

Shooter from yesterday. Of course he has a recent Felony gun charge dismissed.

UPDATE on the man who opened fire at Zilker on Wednesday:

The criminal, 30-year-old Brandon Thompson, was shooting at his girlfriend. She was shot in the back of the head.

Thompson ran into Barton Hills and bursts into a random home, where the homeowner shot him. Thompson was then arrested.

Thompson is originally from Mechanicsburg, Ohio and has been living in Austin for years, perhaps working as a chef. He lived in a four-bedroom house near McKinney State Park.

I'm told by sources he was a constant menace to police and at one point evaded them with a stolen motorcycle.

He was arrested 7 times before. All 10 previous charges were dismissed or declined by prosecutors, except for two breezy plea deals.

At last reporting, his girlfriend was in critical condition and not expected to survive.

Step one in gun control should be actually prosecuting gun crimes.

Was leaving Lubbock after a funeral a few years ago. I thought the security check point was closed. No, I was the only person going through.

In Lubbock International Airport’s defense, it was mid morning on a Sunday.

Imagine a hell where every day for eternity you flew back and forth between Lubbock Preston Smith "International" Airport and Rick Husband Amarillo "International" Airport, stopping only briefly at each airport to dine at one of the airport restaurants before re-boarding your return flight.

One time 25+ years ago, I had to fly to Lubbock to attend a meeting.  I walk out of the airport expecting to just catch a cab.  Nope.  No cabs.  I call a cab.  Maybe THE cab.  Took 30 minutes to get to the airport.  I was about a minute away of walking over to one of the cotton farms across the highway and offering a farmer $40 for a ride into town.

Then years later, won a huge case in a one-day mini-trial.  Lots of celebration.  Drop the rental car off, walk to the terminal 100 yards.  Had to hold my briefcase up to my head to shield my eyes from being sandblasted by the blowing dust/sand in the 50 mph win.

Get inside, head to the bar, because victory drinks.  Walk in the entry....overwhelming smell of puke and stale beer.  Spin around and walk out.  Guys, it smelled too bad for me to sit down and drink.

It's a wretched hellhole.

Was that back when you could still smoke in the bar? I was amused that the bar was like a smoke-filled fishbowl from the outside. And yes, it was (prob still is) disgusting.

Sounds like someone created an alternative logo.  Can you post it on this thread?  Not that the city would ever capitulate.

Oh shit, I just noticed there were multiple pages of proposed images. I'm too lazy for that.

It was soon to also be filled with gas from Allsup's burritos, I'm sure.

Alas, I had flown up there and back, so no Allsup's stops were on the agenda.  Yet another depressing thing about the trip.

I would love to see an independent investigation/audit to see what really has been going down with this obvious “homeless services” scandal - how long it has been going on, how much much was skimmed, whose pockets were filled….and what relationship they had/have with past & present city leaders.

Of course no such thing will happen, nor will local media have the nads to discover the truth.

"Non-profit operated the shelter in ways that did not align with Austin.  It was run efficiently, compassionately, and within budget."

They absolutely need to audit the crap out of both ends of this relationship, but we'll see the Epstein files AND Jimmy Hoffa's body before the city admits any wrong doing or gives anyone a glance behind the curtains.

Austin voters have previously spoken that they don't want audits done of the city.  The people that actually get off their asses to vote are getting what they asked for.

Reminiscing about a case in 1960s Austin….

Up until 60 years ago Austin, Texas had only one TV station (channel 7 CBS) owned by the President Lyndon Johnson family business.
Luckily, after several years of consumer pressure overcoming LBJ’s reluctance, the FCC granted a license for a new 2nd TV station (either ABC or NBC - I don’t remember) which quickly went on the air.

Several months later one of the new station’s news reporters went on the air documenting a scandal whereby a group of local and state democrat politicians used insider information to buy up hundreds of acres of nearby rural land cheaply before announcing that the City of Austin was going to purchase the property to build a huge power plant and a lake for cooling purposes. Also to include a park.
Of course the City bought the land from the crooked politicians for triple the price they paid for it a few months earlier before the announcement.

It caused quite a backlash of criticism among the citizenry, but local media went silent when several months later the FCC mysteriously and without much comment refused to renew that TV station’s license to operate…and it went off the air.
Ever since then, it seems that Austin media “investigative reporters” have been afraid to push any truthful news of several scandals of city property purchases, building projects, massive social programs for the homeless…etc

Where'd you source this from? I google quote-searched the first line and found the exact text from a vegas tapatalk group

Seems like a weird thing to drag up in the current context of the government unilaterally threatening national broadcasting licenses because "they're mean to me"

That’s a political thread to comment about any topic, including old & new things.

In that particular case it was a real example of government directly punishing a media entity for factual reporting of a scandal that occured in Austin and was subsequently “buried”.

I have no idea why you would be offended because I quoted the post.

Same thing more or less tried to happen and failed, with the airport.  Minus the TV station angle.

Yep, when the local powers bought up the prospective land by Manor but the new airport was eventually built at Bergstrom.
A longtime friend (Dave Helfert) was the mouthpiece for that “investment” group.
They apparently did recoup their investment when the Manor property was eventually built at developed.

edited to add: I think the shutdown tv station in the 1960’s scandal was eventually bought up and restarted under another call signal.
