I don’t disagree on that. But if for some reason KU was ever going to leave the Big 12, that was the logical landing point because the B1G and SEC don’t want to dilute their football brands with a mid program with few accomplishments.

The Big 12 should absolutely own their status as the premier MBB conference instead of trying to force their way into the CFB adult table

When Maryland left the ACC, KU should’ve been all over that as their replacement. But again, nobody wanted them.

ACC wasn't any better and didn't pay its members more than the Big 12 at the time. The only difference is their marginal, ESPN-sponsored, ACC Network. ACC = Big 12

Also Maryland join the B1G in 2014. KU was in a stretch of 3-9, 2-10, 1-11, 3-9, 3-9 in the Gill/Weis era. Nobody wanted them and football rules the day

Now with Leopold might be a different story. 10 years ago? No way

And everyone knew (and knows) that the top brands are going to leave soon. Why would KU put themselves in the same position of a conference that could collapse at any moment? Not to mention, if they had joined back then, they'd probably be making less than what they do now in the Big XII after the FSU-Clem settlement which gives them more revenue and everyone else less. I doubt their basketball program would put them in the class of increased revenue under their new setup.

In the year of our lord, 2025? No fucking way would I join the ACC from the Big 12.

10 years ago, though, if they got asked to join the ACC after Maryland left, I bet they would have jumped.  Or thought about it very hard.

Lefkoe and Long I do not know. The rest of them I do. I remember Wire playing for the Bills. I believe he was a safety.

To add some random Takeo Spikes knowledge, the last time he played in a playoff or championship game was his senior year at Auburn when he lost to Manning and the Vols in the SEC Title Game. He is one of only seven linebackers in NFL history to start in over 200 games (219) and he played in more games than any player that never played in a single playoff game. Every team he played for got better and made a playoff appearance after he went to a new team as well.

Who the fuck is Champ Bailey?

Not sure if serious, but Champ Bailey is one of the best corners in the last quarter century.  All-American at Georgia, won the Nagurski Award, and finished 7th in the Heisman race.  Then was a 7 time All-Pro in the NFL and 1st ballot Hall of Famer.

Looks nice, but that's pretty weak as a P4 that one of the end zones has no seats.

This is only Phase 1, they’re completing the East and South (open end zone) side in Phase 2, starting construction after this season.  There will be a low section of seats with patio behind, but that end will never be fully enclosed as it would block the view of the Hill and Campanile.  (Which is a big deal to alums).

I was not being serious.

I don't really recognize their broadcast crew, however.

Don't love it, but when you compare it to some of the photos that have bounced around the internet for Casey Pachall and the Trevone' Boykin pictures  I am actually pretty good with it considering their is a damn good chance if those are TCU coeds wearing those other outfits there is talent.

Besides, it is easier to be lenient when he is a junior who has won 2/3 of this 24 career starts, thrown for over 6,000 yards, has a 2 to 1 td to int ratio, and did this without a viable running game.

The B12 really is kind of interesting, in a freakish way. Its parity is kind of a strength, even though it lacks for bell cows. It has six members (UH, TCU, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and ASU) that crawled out of the wreckage of dead/dying conferences, and are always looking to scramble up.

It has other schools like TT, ISU, KU that have seen their foes of over a century abandon them, and they believe they just need a little boost in order to rejoin them. I can’t think of a Big 12 member that is happy where it is.

They are like crabs in a pot, all willing to climb over each other to get out. But, know what? I’ve never seen a crab crawl out of the boiling pot. I can’t think of a Big 12 member that will get picked for promotion. (I want to say ASU, due to demographics, but we’ve been saying that for 50 years).

Man I can never tell if the schtick is intentional or if your brain really is incapable of any different thought. The current Big 12 is content and the conference today has a lot of upside. It’s settled that the BIG and SEC aren’t going to call and even if someone had that opportunity and left we’ll be fine. It’s understood that nobody would turn down the revenue boost if available (although I’ve made clear that unequal revenue share is going to hit those conferences soon eliminating the primary appeal for mid tier programs). Only Utah fans seem to think they are BIG worthy based on a Facebook group I joined and quickly left and they’re delusional.

Sure, the six legacy XII schools would prefer that the 1996 version of the conference still existed or had expanded. The western flank probably would be happier if the 2012 PAC was still around. TCU and the AAC crew are (or should be) ecstatic with their current spot. It is what it is and we survived. Only WSU and ORST suffered the demise we all feared. Tech and KU and others are working on their facilities and competitiveness to survive the next possible break off which most likely will be 48-64. If it’s 20-24 we’re out anyway so none of us are trying to make that bar. I think it’s a fun conference, I just hope to win our first conference game in the new setup this year, lol.

Schtick or not, I fucking love it. It’s always acerbic and backhanded and then it spins you guys up to respond. And y’all usually make good points that i agree with, or least Al tries on his end. It’s work the occasional 3 minutes of my life. His work on the sooners is often even better.

This is nice.

In the early conversations about NIL, accompanied by a man who stirs queso into salsa with his finger, we discussed the concept of fundraising enough money for Texas NIL that, at some point, would be large enough to pay the yearly NIL requirements for the team without touching, and in fact growing the principal. I'm not sure we understood how fast NIL would get this large, but it's a a nice pie in the sky idea. Of course, you're talking about probably a Billion dollars in the fund now to do that.

If 100 million is left over from that guy, that's a nice start for Kansas.

It's "principal," young man--AL. Now, you march right down there to the office and don't you come back without a note from Mr. Conklin, do you understand me?

I don't do maths. How big a pot do you need to endow a $40-$50M roster per year? I think the most fascinating part of this new landscape is how many millionaires and billionaires are willing to pay that sum for one year rosters. Campbell obviously will but others seem more interested in long term things that come with naming rights. Thats a ton of money for one year at a time I don't care how rich you are.

The average return of the S&P since its inception is now around 10%. I presume people concerned with managing 500M-1B probably employ a bit more sophisticated approach to managing a nest egg of that size.

1 Billion at 5%, which has been said is well below S&P returns, will get you 50 million.

Your assumption that $40-$50M per roster year is a static number going forward seems flawed when you consider the obvious fact that the NIL Genie is out of the lamp and is growing by the day. And there's no way in hell we'll ever get him back in. And then in addition there are the bags . . .

University endowments payouts are more conservative (closer to 5%), so you would need 20x your annual payout.  Of course they may manage that type of fund separately to be more aggressive.

I think he was saying "Al" as in short for Alfred, not "AI" as in artificial intelligence. Which I assume is a reference to @Al_4_ISU, who does make some good points.

But perhaps I've misunderstood.

The first 75 million goes towards stadium completion, leaving what amounts to a 225 million endowment.  Absolutely a nice start.

It doesn't help that in Surly's standard font the capital "I" and lowercase "l" look identical. One of the few situations where a serif font is useful.

I thought about putting both letters in caps but figured it would get figured out. I was taking a thinly veiled potshot at this thread’s resident cyclone.

When I first stared lurking here I was amazed that (1) there were so many OSU, ISU, Baylor, and Tech fans on this website, and (2) that many of them were good contributors and not just trolls.

As usual, however, the Tech grads are of dubious value.
