We always marveled in college (early 90s) that it didn’t matter what you ordered at Taco Bell it was always about $4. That and the $2.99 two-cheeseburger meal at McDonald’s were staples, drunk or sober. Back when you could pay for dinner with the change in your car’s ashtray.

I think I gained 20# in fifth grade from the Batman Forever meal, which was 3.98. Now:

My qualm with the $7 box is that I don't like the chicken chalupa that comes with it.

I swap it for a regulsr Chalupa Supreme (taco meat). My son swaps his for the steak one for like $.60 extra.

If you had to choose one fast food restaurant to live off of for a calendar year what would you choose?

Chipotle type, sandwich shops, and pizza places all allowed.

I’d choose a pizza place like Jets.  Because you can get different styles of pizza, plus they have sandwiches, calzones and wings or at least some pizza places do.  Sonic would be second.

Like - I can only eat there - or that's the only restaurant I can eat at?

Arby's actually has a ton of variety and most of it's pretty good. I might not make the full year though because I'd wind up housing so many mozzarella sticks.

Sonic isn't a bad answer but I'm a little picky with their menu.

I might go with something like taco cabana.

Think having breakfast is a big plus.

Guess I’ll answer my own question. I’d honestly take Chic Fila. With all the breakfast options, sauces, and sides I think I could make it semi interesting. CFA itself isn’t even in my top restaurants but I could do the variety.

Potbelly’s core menu gets old quick but they switch up their cookies/shakes enough to make things tolerable. Intro’ing wraps was a solid move, not nearly as messy.

Coke Freestyle machines could be a real game changer if you really value variety.

Is it considered fast food or more like a Chilis or Panera Bread?

Fast casual?

Whataburger...breakfast tacos/sandwiches, burgers, grilled/fried chicken breast, fried fish sandwich, 3 different salads, deserts.  You can take advantage of the unlimited additions/subtractions to make off menu chicken fajita tacos. since those were discontinued.

Is Beck's Prime too pricey to be considered?

Remind me.  Does it have a drive through?

Also, I might throw in for Einstein Bros. Bagels for a year if pressed.  Nothing they have is great, but the coffee is okay, as are the breakfast options, sandwiches, soups, and desserts.

Alternative answer might be Rudy's.

So is La Madeleine "fast food" or "fast casual"?  I'd probably say the latter, but I could sustain myself there for awhile.

I think the test above is a fair one: to qualify as fast food, it has to regularly feature a drive-thru.  So, sorry, no La Madeleine for you.

I'm serious about Arby's. King of the fast food Reuben sandwich. Well, possibly the only fast food Reuben sandwich, but anyway.

Plus, Horsey sauce.

McAlisters has entered the chat, and it has a drive through, along with giant spuds filled with pot roast.

that's a solid pick for this question. rosa's would be the upgrade pick.

closest i ever came to anything like this was chipotle's chiptopia promotion coming out of the salmonella era. to get the top prize you had to go 11 days per month, with the 5th, 9th, and 1st of the next month visits being free. do it three months in a row and you got catering for 20.

i'm sure there's people who split that between their family, roommates, or office. i did it by myself. 34 chipotle visits in 3 months and then catering that lasted me a while afterward (plenty went into the freezer).

If I’m trying to keep myself alive and decently functional for a year, Panera Bread is a good bet. Breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches, fruit cups, and they do lots of limited menu items so you can break the monotony. With effort you can design a decently healthy diet.

The problem is I don’t ever “want” anything from there, Panera Bread is just a place I end up sometimes, somehow.

To me, Panera has always been a "I want something decent to eat at this generic middle american airport, but don't have time to sit down at any of the sit-down places here" place.  My wife, on the other hand, has actually asked to go there, on purpose, while we're running errands on the weekend or somesuch.  But even she was relating that in recent months -- after private equity has inserted itself in Panera's operations -- Panera has gone way downhill.

I've never had a meal there that I actually "enjoyed."  Their best is always "fine."
