Dustin Johnson was offered around £100 million in a last-ditch swoop by Greg Norman to complete a shock about-turn and sign up to the Saudi-backed rebel golf league, Telegraph Sport understands.

The extraordinary signing-on fee was tabled amid Norman's desperation to land a stellar name after Phil Mickelson, who has not been named on the initial 42-man entry list, suggested he was taking too much heat.

Former world No 1 Johnson has rocked the world of golf with his decision, but, according to insiders, he could now receive up to $150million (£119m) just for stating commitment to the series.

A record-breaking fee will more than compensate for the inevitable storm around him and an expected exodus of major sponsors linked to his commitments on the PGA Tour.

Three months after declaring he was “fully committed” to the PGA, Johnson's sudden about-turn has left powerbrokers reeling. The 37-year-old, who won The Masters 18 months ago is among a 42-man field for next week's LIV Golf Invitational, which offers $25million in prize money due to controversial backing from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Six more names are due to be added before the event begins, which could see Mickelson handed a late entry.

Telegraph Sport understands Norman, the organiser in chief and a friend of Johnson's, had initially planned to announce the line up last Friday, but postponed due to last-minute negotiations with his star signing.

Johnson was previously billed to play in the RBC Canadian Open next week, as he has an endorsement deal with the Canadian bank as one of its ambassadors. The Canadian Open have already openly expressed dismay at his decision and it is now likely the RBC will be the first major brand to pull the plug on endorsements with Johnson.

Telegraph seems to be the only source I could find online so far that mentions the $100 million dollar figure, so who knows if its accurate. That would buy a lot of blow.

Quite honestly,  meh. He's the only player out of 48 to fuss over. I don't think anyone will miss Phil, not so much for his past year, but mostly because he turned it in after his PGA win. Sergio? Westwood?

I also don't get the beef these guys, particularly Phil, has with the PGA tour. Too much money going around to feel sorry for those guys. It was worse when the Doobie Brothers broke up, this is nothing.

When did that happen?

Saudis are spending a fuckton of money on this tour. Their return is predicated on ad revenue and sponsorships. What happens if no one watches, at least in the US? My understanding is that they'll only have 1 tourney in the US. Unless it's the British open, US golf viewers aint gonna watch live European or Asian tourneys. Hardly anyone watches recorded shit especially if it's just some random tourney.

So assuming that this whole thing crashes and burns, the PGA players who jump ship are making more money short term vs being unemployed long term.

bullshit. Just say what you’re actually thinking:

”We award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.”

or...

"You are not welcomed back into our tour when the shit goes south. Good luck."

There are some defectors that I get, especially DJ. NLU is speculating that he’s getting $125M-$200M just for showing up. That doesn’t include winnings which should be substantial given the competition. What I don’t get is the college  kids going for $4M. Seems short-sighted.

What was the average balance in your checking account when you were a senior in college?

Sure. It probably depends on potential. If you can get and hold on to your card, it’s probably not a good decision, particularly if it means a PGA permanent ban. Have fun being banished to the Asian tour then club pro ranks in a few years.

this is where the saudis can cut deep, going after the younger guys. target the college players just announced in the university class. if you get 3 out of the 15, it's success. next year's class will see how those 3 did, and maybe next year they get 6 out of the 15.

locking in younger players before than can succeed on the pga is how this league succeeds

But then the debate is going to be, how good is this kid actually? Is beating up on Lee Westwood and McDowell match after match going to get the same….respect as a win on the PGA Tour? I don’t think so

they can ask him all the way to the bank

masters, the us and British open should still be a go for LIv players

Hideki Matsuyama disqualified from Memorial due to non-conforming club

https://nypost.com/2022/06/02/hideki-matsuyama-disqualified-from-memorial-over-bizarre-violation/

Former Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified from the Memorial during Thursday’s opening round at Muirfield Village in Ohio. More strange was the rules violation itself — officials determined the Japanese star had too much paint on the face of his 3-wood.

“Our committee became aware through some pictures that were posted [on the internet] that there may be a substance that has been painted on the face of one of Hideki’s clubs,” rules official Steve Rintoul told reporters. “Unfortunately, when we found out about it, Hideki was playing the second hole.”

It was the first time that Matsuyama, whose first career victory on the PGA Tour came at the Memorial in 2014, was disqualified on tour.

Matsuyama, who shot a three-over 39 through his first nine holes Thursday, was informed of the disqualification before teeing off on the back nine. The paint on the club was applied as an alignment aid, according to Rintoul, with 10 small lines forming a circle on the face, but it was the amount of the substance that was deemed excessive and therefore made the club non-conforming.

If it seems too good to be true, it usually is, and that's all i can say about people taking $100m to go play on a Saudi-funded tour. Imagine thinking that any golfer not named Tiger is worth paying that much money for.

If DJ is getting paid $120M to jump ship, he's already in retirement mode. He can finish last in every LIV tourney and still be happier than the dude winning. If the league folds in 3 years, he's gets to retire early and fuck around for the 40 years while living like a king.

thats kind of ridiculous to be honest.  he can't line the ball up on the club without that?  does he have something wrong with his eyes?

Or he'll just blow it all like i assume he's done with his PGA Tour earnings and be broke and divorced in like 6 years.

Either you don't play a lot of golf or you don't realize how bad your alignment probably is. And for these guys, millimeters matter.

F Nicklaus

This, sort of.  It was late in his career, but we loved Arnold Palmer and couldn’t stand that Nicklaus took his place.  In the last 20 years or so I’ve grown to like Nicklaus a little more.  He’s still too cocky and arrogant at times.
