Dude, it’s not a flex to brag about saving $5.

That's $5 American there Rockefeller.

Not to mention that all of the episodes are eventually run on "plain ol' Paramount" on whatever streaming package you have/are stealing. So that massive $5 outlay is unnecessary.

Since we got time to kill.

1) 1883 opening scene ep 1 where the native americans attack Elsa and a group....this is obviously in the future.  Catches an arrow in the stomach.

2) Then there are a few sneak peaks they showed before the premier where a) James gets shot...shows up wounded to Faith.  b) James with his two sons during winter....let one of the native's bury his father in a tree on James' land.  Can't recall when those clips were shown...I know one was before Yellowstone ep and it confused me.

Think they make it that far in this season 1?  Feel like the Elsa scene may happen.  But the other scenes seem to be way in the future where Duttons have a home established in Montana....maybe circa 1893?  Little John looks to be the now older teenage son in the winter sneak peek.

Wait. There are people watching 1883 that have never seen Yellowstone? Figured they go hand in hand.

Yellowstone is on cable&streaming channel packages on regular Paramount channel.  No special app needed.

We are mid-season 3 of Yellowstone.  Seasons 1-3 are on Peacock which I got for my wife (no pics) strictly to see Yellowstone.  Started recording season 4 midway through, so we'll probably have to watch the first episodes online on the computer or wait till season four drops on Peacock (prefer to see the show on the big TV as the scenery is one of the major draws for me).  I'm not smart enough to do the internets on my TV.

Paramount Network runs a Yellowstone marathon almost every weekend. You should be able to catch the first half of Season 4 there.

Paramount+ missed the boat on not picking up Yellowstone's streaming rights. It wouldn't shock me to learn that Yellowstone is one of the most popular shows on Peacock. It's either Yellowstone or The Office.

I have youtubeTV (only had it for a year) and if I click on the paramount channel in the guide...it let's me view shows/movies on demand.   So for Yellowstone I can sort through the 4 seasons now.  You may have to add the show to your library or something, but you should be able to view on-demand even with other tv providers.

Not mean to hi-jack the 1883 thread.  Also pic of Elsa included

Yes, the scene where Dutton lets the Indian bury his father takes place in 1893, ten years after events in the current series.

Finally got around to watching this show. Despite having soured on Yellowstone which I think is a poorly written soap opera disguised as a good drama, I was cautiously optimistic about 1883.

So far, I like it more than expected. I think Tim McGraw is doing a surprisingly good job in his role and Isabel May is easy on the eyes. The scenery is good and I like the descriptions of Texas.

There are definitely some frustrations I have though:

1. Completely agree with the posters who pointed out they went north to the Red River, then to avoid going east to Denison, their only other option was to go southwest and cross the Brazos?!? Abilene is way the hell out of the way at that point and that would put them on the south side of the Brazos, meaning they need to cross it again or go way west to cut around it. Why on earth was this part of the script? They could’ve just headed west along the south bank of the Red River and avoided crossing both rivers. Or, if the goal was to show the difficulty of river crossings, there are countless other ways to force them to cross a river in a way that makes geographical sense. Given that Taylor Sheridan lives in Weatherford and has part ownership in the 6666 Ranch, these types of pointless mistakes are almost unforgivable. It’s a show about a wagon journey to Oregon (or likely Montana) so the geography and the route they are traveling are pretty damn important.

2. We are 5 episodes in (~3 weeks in show time) and they’ve basically gone ~150 miles and had half of their people die. At what point do they say fuck it and go back to Fort Worth? Or will they suddenly do warp speed in the last half of the season?

3. The Germans don’t speak English in episode one, but then they mostly speak English in the next handful of episodes. Well sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. But then you have a scene with Josef and his wife alone, where instead of speaking in their native German as you would naturally expect, she is speaking broken English to just him. Be consistent with it. Let them speak German and we can manage the subtitles.

4. When that first bandit interaction occurred on the banks of the Trinity River, why in the hell did the SIL widow start throwing rocks at the bandits? She basically gave them a reason to start shooting people including her daughter. Dumbass.

5. The Elsa narration seems like a direct rip-off of Dolores from Westworld. Surprised no one else has brought that up.

Agree on all. I’ve tried to figure out their route on a map and it makes no sense. Not geographically, nor going across Comanche territory where renegade bands were still an issue.
The sudden learning of English by the Germans caused the same Huh? From my wife and me.
That rockthrowing by the sil on men watering their horses on a free range River deserved her beating. I guess it’s why James told Margaret “we murdered them.”
Still would like to know why all these Germans landed at Galveston and went right past all the German communities of the hill country.

I probably need to rewatch episode 1 because none of their motivations make sense.

The Germans come to America for a better life. They arrive in Galveston, move up to Fort Worth, then embark on a dangerous cross country journey to Oregon to do what when they get there? They don’t know how to shoot a gun or even how to swim. Do they know how to farm? They steal from each other and don’t trust each other. Half of them are already dead. Even if their lives in Germany were shit, they were surely better off remaining in Texas and joining another German community compared to their current plan.

Captain and Thomas are helping them but is it really worth it? Captain said he just wants to see Oregon again before it’s settled and ruined. I don’t think he needed to escort a bunch of incompetent Germans there to achieve that goal unless he is desperate for money. They are lowering his own chances of arriving alive.

And since they are doing this together, perhaps Captain should train them along the way so they have some useful survival skills. Maybe teach them to use a gun or something instead of spend all your time yelling at them like misbehaving children.

a simple google search will show that Germans were major immigrants to Oregon in the time period of the show

Here’s another question? Why wouldn’t the Duttons go from Tennessee to Memphis up to St Louis and take the train to Oregon? Instead of train to ft worth and then overland to Oregon? Or up the Missouri River by boat? I don’t think these writers know history. Now I’m pissed off.

I would like to know why these Germans likely landed in bustling Galveston and are headed to Oregon instead of central Texas with a well established German community.

There was still a lot of angst over the Nueces Massacre with the German community which was heavily publicized back in Germany, plus land was cheap in Oregon (I don't think it was free, I think they had to pay like a $1.25 an acre or something).  I don't think there would have been large chunks of land cheaply/freely available in the Fredericksburg area.

They had to cross the Brazos first

I'm going to guess that most of them didn't walk there from Texas, though.

Texas attracted many Germans who entered through Galveston and Indianola. I suspect many also came from Russia to San Francisco and then up. It's a television drama, not a history lesson, y'all  want to poke holes in shit, then talk about Yellowstone. based tv the only job more dangerous than ranching in Montana is investigating crimes for the Navy.

It's funny doing a quick google search on how far the group has traveled on 1883.  Tons of articles and reddits about how viewers are confused.

"Why didn't they have a route plan before?"

"They aren't going to make it to Oregon until Season 20"

"Over five episodes, the wagon train has covered an area that takes about a two-hour drive. Walking, it’s about 51 hours. They’ve taken about a week to travel 150 miles."

Haven’t yet but will. This show is superb, rest TV imo. I’m always starving for a great western though, probably my favorite genre (possibly the one I’m most picky about too) when it’s all said and done.

Appreciated. I saw about 2 episodes from about season 2 and it was pretty good; acting and plot.

In both of these series, I'm meh on Old West type of shit (nothing will ever, ever replace the Leone triptik in my opinion) and it's hard to avoid tired stereotypes (even in these) but the acting, props and cinematography can go a long way (I mean if you can't film beautiful landscapes out west, you suck as a camera specialist).

I did catch Ep. 1 of 1883 last night after the missus went to bed, and it was pretty engaging. BBT was about as good as he's ever been in a western.  His "revenge shooting" (nospoiler) scene and especially his last line after it was giggly epically good.

I'll stick with 1883 for now, it's about a B+ to me, plenty good enough to keep going.

I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been watching Once Upon a Time in the West today. I want to be Charles Bronson…just everything him in that film. I am enjoying 1883. I love Sam Elliot. And Tim McGraw is a very decent actor. Pretty great casting. But OUTW is just stunning!

I've enjoyed this for the most part.  But the one thing this (and most) western serials do is make me truly appreciate Lonesome Dove.   Every time I see Thomas, I think Deets.    I was just hoping the series would be a bit more factual and realistic.    That whole chase/fight thing with the bandits was neverending.  There were 6 to start with and they took one out before the thing ever started.   Some of those guys must have been zombies, because it sure seems they got killed more than once.  Sometimes it seemed there were 20 horses and riders and there were only maybe 10 total should have been there.

It could be worse, it could be on the disappointment level of that garbage Lone Star with Quaid, or True Women (where they fought San Jacinto at night).

It kinda started sucking through the last 2 episodes (I've seen a lot of boards etc. where people are really griping about the time it's taking to get almost nowhere, and how they've taken the dumbest route possible), but the end of the last one where her boyfriend was shot was a pretty well-done moment.

I'm almost ready to bail on the show due to its many goofy things (especially for a show which I thought was going to tout the historical accuracy of the subject) but it's still watchable.  Unlike many here I think Isabel May's accent is one of the accurate things (a hybrid Tennessee accent).  Anyway beats the hell outta 75% of the other garbage on streaming right now, so...

As understandable (avatar out front shoulda told ya), my favorite Westerns are the Lenone trio.  GB&U is first (mostly due to the amazing scope of the broad epic plot), but I like all 3 of them.  OUTW is just behind them.  Everything on Lenone's screen is an adventure in fascination, not to mention the most damn realistic settings in any Western(s), period.  You can watch them 55 times and see something new the 56th.

Really good episode. I think maybe they have been referencing Abilene, Kansas as the restocking point? We naturally think of Abilene, Texas but it would make more sense trip/story wise. Tim wasn't the only one to give a good performance.

One thing that bothers me, and I know this is nitpicking and happens with pretty much every western, is the hats. Why does almost every hat have to be on the verge of being worn out? A good hat should last decades unless it is intentionally abused. Yet every hat is on the verge of being tossed out.

Either Sam Elliot is thinking of her like his daughter now, or he wants to fuck her and that look at the end was him trying to figure out how to kill her dad when he finds out.

I was thinking he was looking at her and wistfully remembering all the strange he'd had over his acting career.

The one thing that makes me annoyed with the show is the cost of everything. They know this was 1883 right? shit cost a nickel, maybe a quarter or 2 bucks. Everything here is $50, $150, $600. None of those clowns had that much money.

Same...I told my wife that mirror costs $50 today. Homie got ripped off.

And $600 to stock up on food for the trip....maybe...I've never run a chuck wagon.

Did the mention how much they got paid for each German?

I think it was $250 a person and there were like 160 of them at the start so 40k. Sam Elliot could have opened a bank.
