He should never see the field at Texas. Once guys like him, Brock, and Bush never see the field the better we will be. He’s better than Crawford because he’s more disciplined but he’s an absolute weakness with his lack of speed.

Christ, $18 each for tickets to games at the Alamodome?

Is the Westlake/Northshore game on television?  Like, not-so-hard-to-find kinda TV?  Not some bullshit premium pay streaming service?

And $14 to park in the Dome Parking lot.   But I know of a secret spot close by you can park for free.     If you cash app me $14, I’ll tell you where it is.

We used to always park for free in the lot behind the bar or whatever at Hoefgen & center street. No one ever said anything. That was years ago though.

If I was going now id just park at that lot under I-37 & houston st. Usually $5, never more than $10 for events. It does require you to walk a little bit though, which I never minded.

It’ll be on KBVO in Austin.

Fun fact, that little office park surface lot just NE of the Chaps stadium off of Camp Craft.  That's where the yoga pants pre-game wino fest is during regular season.  My god, if you don't have any scruples...walk around there before/after a game and say you're looking to get back out there since your wife passed and miss the community of football and fellowship.  You'll be having a threesome in the back of her X7 before kickoff.

Back to football...go local sports team!

Confession: I always like this week even better than state championship week.  It's more fun because fan bases expand regionally; everyone in west Texas will be rooting for Hawley and New Home, even if they couldn't find those town with a Rand McNally.  And hell, even the 210 and 956 territories will root for Westlake. (OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but they will root for Wimberley and Boerne and Edna and Poth.)

STATE SEMIFINALS SCHEDULE

CLASS 6A DIVISION I

Prosper (13-1) vs. Duncanville (13-0), 4 p.m. Saturday at SMU’s Ford Stadium
Congrats to Prosper on getting over the hump.  Losing 3 consecutive regional finals is something only really good programs can actually be in position to do, but now they have a win...and they get Duncanville, who is making their 5th consecutive appearance in the state semis.  Prosper doesn't have any top recruits on their roster -- hell, as of now they don't have anyone committed to play NCAA football.  D'ville OTOH has a ton of dudes going to play on Saturdays, including 5-star underclassmen at DE and WR. This is just a mismatch.  D'ville let Westfield stay in the game last week because of idiotic penalties, so it may end up closer than it should be, but this one won't be competitive.

Galena Park North Shore (14-0) vs. Austin Westlake (14-0), 3 p.m. Saturday at Houston’s Rice Stadium
I’m writing this one last because I don’t know what to think.  Both teams are basically unbeatable (54 straight wins vs 27 straight for NS).  Both teams have a lot of injuries.  Yeah, NS has a WR playing QB, but that kid has been playing great – he had 159 rushing and was 11-17 for 126 throwing last week against a really good Atascocita defense – and he has played QB for long enough now that we should quit calling him a WR.  Westlake, meanwhile, switched QBs in the middle of last week’s game.  As of now, star WR Jaden Greathouse is expected to play for the Chaps.  And hell, that might be enough to make the difference.

CLASS 6A DIVISION II

Denton Guyer (14-0) vs. DeSoto (12-2), 2 p.m. Saturday at Frisco’s Ford Center

These two have surprisingly only played one time in history, a 2016 regular season game.  Desoto has a good chance to score some points as the Guyer secondary has gotten torched for 780 yards the past two weeks in wins over HP and BNelson.  Desoto's QB has over 3K yards and a 41-2 TD/INT ratio and has Johntay Cook (1300+ yards and 21 TD) to throw to.  But Guyer can also score, as neither of those two wins ended up close.  What Guyer is doing differently in the playoffs is using Jackson Arnold's legs; he has almost 450y rushing in 4 games.  I think Guyer will outscore Desoto, and it will be really fun.

Katy (14-0) vs. Austin Vandegrift (13-1), 1 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Alamodome
Vandy is good, but extremely lucky to be here – if you missed it last week, Dripping had the ball inside the Vandy 1 with under 2 minutes, down 3 points.  On 4th down, they decided to go for the win, and the QB fumbled the snap on a sneak attempt.  Katy has just been pasting opponents since the middle of October and won their regional final by 32.  Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Katy has a big O-line and a really good RB that just grinds opposing defenses.  RB Seth Davis has 2200+ yards on the season and posted 241 and 6 TDs last week.  Tigers will take this one easily.

CLASS 5A DIVISION I

Aledo (12-2) vs. Longview (14-0), 2 p.m. Saturday at Dallas’ Kincaide Stadium
This one is REALLY interesting, because of Aledo’s longtime ownership of 5AD2.  But this is now D1, and Longview is one of the most well-rounded teams in the state.  They have a game manager at QB who has thrown for 1800y and 22 TDs, 4-star studs at RB (Taylor Tatum had 186 and 5 TDs in last week’s win over #2 Timberview, and 1800y and 31 TDs on the year) and WR (Jalen Hale has over 1000y and 14 TDs), and a shutdown D that has allowed only 137 points.  Aledo leans on dudes with funny names – QB Hauss Hejny has 1800y passing and 1000 rushing, and RB Hawk Patrick-Daniels, Jr. has 1200y on the ground.  Aledo struggled to put away a massively 1-dimensional Burleson Cent team last week, and I have trouble imagining them hanging with a team with as many weapons as Longview.

College Station (12-2) vs. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (12-2), 5 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio’s Alamodome
CS outlasted Smithson Valley last week 26-21 in a game that ended with SV on the CS 1.  Vets is experienced -- they started playing varsity football in 2016 and have been at least three rounds deep every season since first making the postseason in 2017, playing in the regional final each of the last four seasons.  But CS is experienced and resilient – they lost in Jerryworld in OT last season to Paetow, then lost their coach, a ton of seniors, and then lost their star RB for the year in a preseason scrimmage.  The Station will be LIT!!! as the Cougars book another trip to Jerryworld.

CLASS 5A DIVISION II

Argyle (14-0) vs. South Oak Cliff (11-3), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Worth’s Crowley ISD Stadium
Am I dumb enough to pick a first year 5A team to knock off the defending champs?  Maybe.  Argyle as usual is really really good, but their offense is much more run-oriented than usual, with RB RJ Bunnell (1600y) leading the way.  They also have a defense that’s stouter than normal, led by DE Riley Van Poppel (yes, Todd is his dad).  SOC has been playing playoff games like they’re trying to scare their coaches, but finally put together a solid game against a good Melissa team last week.  Their D is even better than Argyle’s by about any measure and has a bunch of D1 recruits.  It would not surprise me a bit to see Argyle win this, but I think they have to be the underdog simply because they’re relatively untested coming out of region 1.

Port Neches-Groves (12-2) vs. Liberty Hill (13-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Katy’s Legacy Stadium
I wouldn't blame PNG for just being happy to be here.  They pulled a huge upset last week, taking down a FB Marshall team that had beaten them by 21 in the regular season.   LH had their top two RBs injured last week, and they won't be at 100% this week.  But the Panthers found a new weapon, as their QB picked up the slack with 244y rushing in the win over Flour Bluff (he had 325y rushing all season coming in).  And every year, LH just seems to be one of the toughest, fittest teams in the state, and I think that’s their secret weapon.

CLASS 4A DIVISION I

Decatur (11-3) vs. China Spring (13-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield’s Newsom Stadium
Decatur is a nice story, a good team with a great RB headed to OU, but CS is the defending state champ and have not missed a beat this season. CS has also had a much tougher road to get here, with regular season wins over Melissa, Lorena, Stephenville, LaVega, and Connolly and a win over undefeated Anna last week.  CS wins this easily.
Tyler Chapel Hill (12-2) vs. Boerne (14-0), 7 p.m. Friday at San Antonio’s Alamodome
TCH made it to the state semis last season starting freshmen at QB (Brisbon) and RB (Stewart), so they should make it further with those guys as sophs, right?  Boerne scored 42 points in the first half last week to break open their highly anticipated showdown with Calallen.  I don't think anyone is really shocked Boerne won, but blowing the doors off like that and beating Calallen by 30 is not something anyone expected.  Boerne’s unheralded D, which has allowed only 191 points, might be the difference here.  It is for me.

CLASS 4A DIVISION II

Glen Rose (13-1) vs. Carthage (14-0), 7 p.m. Friday at Frisco’s Ford Center
I think I started talking up GR in week 2 as a team ready to take the next step, and they won region last week by putting up nearly 700y and 62 points against Monahans, thanks mostly to QB Hudson White, who has 2200y passing and 1800y rushing on the season.  I'm not off the bandwagon -- they're just playing Carthage last week.  Carthage again looks like a team assembled in a video game.  Big O-line, QB with 3400y passing, RB with over 1000 rushing, two receivers at 1000 also, speedy athletic defense.  Carthage is 67-9 IN THE PLAYOFFS since 2007.  They’re simply too good.

Cuero (13-1) vs. Wimberley (14-0), 3 p.m. Friday at San Antonio’s Alamodome
Just one of the best rivalries in Texas, which got kind of screwed up this year with Cuero in Region III, but here they are again.  This will be the 14th meeting since 2004 (Cuero leads that 7-6), and the Gobs beat the Texans twice last year, including 36-26 in the region SFs.  The playoff road has definitely tested the Gobblers more, as Wimberley had a cakewalk through R4, outscoring 4 opponents 242-36, while Cuero has had two OT wins.  It’s kind of hard to get a read on how ready Wimbo will be to step up against a great opponent for a change, but I thought the Texans were the better team last season, and the Texans have almost certainly been stewing on that loss for over a full year, so I think that revenge factor comes into play bigtime.

CLASS 3A DIVISION I

Brock (10-4) vs. Malakoff (13-1), 7 p.m. Thursday at Frisco’s Ford Center
I'll say it again, because it's amazing -- Brock started the season with games against Hirschi, Pleasant Grove, Wimberley, and Gunter.  And they started the season as one of the best 0-4 teams in football history.  Malakoff survived region 2 in this bracket, which was about as tough as any in the state, all levels; they’ve beaten really good teams 3 weeks in a row now.  Brock has a high-flying offense but a defense that gets kind of loose and has allowed 20, 27, and 19 points the last three weeks.  Malakoff’s D looks stronger (144 points all season) and I think that’ll make the difference.

Franklin (14-0) vs. Edna (13-1), 7 p.m. Thursday at Katy’s Legacy Stadium
Any chance Edna had of catching a drowsy Franklin team was killed by Columbus pushing the Lions to the wire last week in a 24-21 classic that was decided by a Franklin TD with 0:20 left.  I attended Enda's win over Llano last week, and unfortunately, I can't point to one single thing that the Cowboys are really good at.  They do have a REALLY big O-line, but it's fat kids, not future NFL tackles.  Franklin by a bunch.

CLASS 3A DIVISION II

Canadian (12-2) vs. Gunter (13-0), 6 p.m. Friday at Abilene’s Wildcat Stadium
Also one of the best rivalries in the state -- these two seem to play in the state semis every season.  It's actually only 6 times in the last 7 years, with Gunter holding a 3-2 edge.  I saw some of the Canadian game last week, and they have another Cavalier kid starring for them, this time at QB.  This makes at least the 3rd Cavalier kid that has played for Canadian.  Cameron Cavalier is more athlete than QB, which means that the Wildcats offense is less the pass-happy Air Canada offense that we've seen before, and more ground game.  Gunter normally rides a high-flying offense to success, but last week their D limited previously-unbeaten Holliday to only 140 total yards.  Gimme Gunter.

Gilmer Harmony (9-5) vs. Poth (13-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium
GH is actually located in Big Sandy according to the USPS.  The Eagles actually started the season 0-4, and then lost 48-21 to Daingerfield in district.  But they have turned things around in the playoffs, winning games by 5, 14, 3, and by 36-22 last week over a Newton team that had won 11 in a row.  QB Boston Seahorn accounted for all 5 TDs last week and ran for 138y, threw for 209, and also intercepted a pass on D; Boston has 1900y passing and 1400y rushing on the season, so he'll be the focus of a Poth D that has allowed only 109 points all season.  The Pirates won a 12-6 rock fight last week to get here. Their QB has 1439y rushing, more than twice what he has passing, so Poth is fairly 1-dimensional on offense.   I believe in Boston Seahorn!

CLASS 2A DIVISION I

Hawley (14-0) vs. Crawford (14-0), 7 p.m. Thursday at Mineral Wells’ Ram Stadium
What a great matchup between a NKotB and an established power.  Hawley kind of came out of nowhere to make it to Jerryworld last year and hasn’t missed a beat this season.  In the regular season, they beat Albany by 12 and Cisco by 3 and no one else got within 20 points.  In the playoffs, their 40-7 win over Cisco was their closest game.  Crawford is 40-3 in the past three years and has only one season with single-digit wins since 2011.  They’re just always damn good, loaded with really tough kids who play both ways, and hell to play against (the D has allowed only 69 points all season).  This should be a war, but I think Hawley has what it takes.

Timpson (14-0) vs. Refugio (13-1), 6 p.m. Thursday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium
I keep referencing it, but I can't think about Timpson without thinking about Bum Phillips' Oilers.  In the late 70s, they were getting really good, but not as good as the Steelers, who smacked them around in the playoffs one year, then needed a horrible official's call to knock them out the next.  Bud's quote was something like, "Last year we knocked on the door.  This year, we banged on the door.  Next year, we're gonna kick the SOB in.  (And then Bud Adams fired Bum.)  In 2020, a ridiculously young Timpson team got pasted by eventual state champ Shiner in the semis.  In 2021, they lost in the semis 25-22 to eventual state champ Shiner.  And now it's "next year" and Refugio put Shiner down last week to make their 18th semi-finals appearance in program history.  Refugio is much more running-game-and-D than the Refugio teams we have seen in the past, though QB Kelan Brown is still their offensive star.  He’ll only be the 2nd-best QB in the game, however, as 4-star Timpson QB Terry Bussey is probably the best player in the state below 4A.  And Terry Bussey is ready to kick the son of a bitch in.

CLASS 2A DIVISION II

New Home (13-1) vs. Albany (12-2), 7 p.m. Thursday at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl
Albany is back again.  They haven’t played fewer than 12 games in a season since MaxPreps started recording in 2004.  I honestly know basically nothing about New Home, and I’m guessing few people do -- they went 8-4 last season, their first winning record since 2016, and they were playing 6-man as recently as 2012.  They haven’t lost since the opener, but struggled to 22-21 and 14-8 playoff wins before handily shocking Wellington last week. Pedigree is important in TXHSFB and Albany has it and NH doesn’t.

Mart (14-0) vs. Burton (13-0), 7 p.m. Thursday at Round Rock’s Reeves Stadium
On the surface this one looks a little more interesting than most Mart games.  Burton is undefeated, but do you know else was undefeated?  Lovelady, who Mart beat by 50 last week.  That was Mart’s 6th straight 50+ win, and they’ve outscored opponents by an absurd 812-82.  Burton’s D is really good – they allowed their first playoff points last week in a 27-7 win.  But Mart QB Jonah Ross is way too good for 2A and Mart should be back in Jerryworld as usual.

Will be in Frisco for Desoto vs. Guyer. Looking forward to seeing Arnold and Bowen in person for once.

Timpson all over Shiner 14-0 in the 2nd.

Bussey broke an 85y run, then he kind of whiffed on the kickoff (yes, he kicks off, too, of course he does) and the ball skittered off to the right exactly 10 yards, and Refugio did not cover.  Then they got a 51y pass and run play for another TD.

Refugio & Timpson tied at 21 with 7min left.  Really good ballgame.

Refugio kicked a fg with 10 seconds left to beat Timpson.

The other game, Bussey ran for over 300 yds in the loss.

"smothered" is a great choice of words.  I loved how when they got a lead, they completely quit passing and just ran the ball down Malakoff's throat.  They were simply just tougher than Malakoff, which I did not expect at all.

Pulling hard for Cuero, CC Vets, Poth, and Refugio (next week). The only South Texas teams left. I also want Boerne to win just because of proximity. Every Austin area school can go fuck itself, region 4 my ass.

Cuero will easily dismantle Wimberley, same for Poth & whatever the hell school that is they’re playing. Boerne wins a tight one. CC Vets hangs tough for a half but the talent difference shows up in the 2nd half and they lose.

Other games of interest to me:

Westlake will steamroll NS, 35-7ish type score. Prosper wins a tight game decided by Duncanville mistakes, Katy obliterates Vandy, Guyer mouthfucks DeSoto, Longview beats Aledo, Argyle beats SOC by a couple scores.

That stadium is one of the elite venues not just in the country but in the world. Giving the kids an opportunity to play in it is reason enough to continue holding the finals there.

Only one team will win each final but every player that steps on that field will have a great story to tell for the rest of their life to anyone and everyone who wants to listen.

I played at that dump in Irving that when you stood on one sideline, all you could see of the people on the other sideline was from the waist up because of the crown on the field. The locker rooms smelled like ass and moldy cheese. The parking was a nightmare. Jerry world is incredible, for multiple reasons. You can admit that and still dislike Jerry. In fact, I encourage it.
