Boise has had far more success than any G school and is a better TV draw.  Yet they really didn't get serious consideration either time.  And they weren't taken seriously because of academics.

I think if Boise was that valuable of a TV draw, the Big 12 would have jumped all over them.

My guess is that the value they added to the TV contract was basically the same as the schools that added, and the geography was farther (more expensive travel) with less opportunity to recruit local talent.

I realize that Boise's academics are a problem for a lot of people, but I don't think they're the reason the Big 12 post UT/OU passed them over.

For the amalgam of academic & athletic prestige, Duke is not only a peer, they may be a notch above Stanford. In the US News rankings (I know, I know....) Stanford is 4 & Duke is 6. We've all seen Duke win a national title in basketball, while Stanford wins in all sports.

I have been told  more than once by my brother in law who lives in Seattle and is a dawg alum that Stanford loved to tell the other schools in the Pac that every sport was as important as every other sport, but the athletic department should never be a prominent part of the schools identity or mission.

Anyone else see the story coming out of Tennessee about the supposed conference NIL "loyalty" pledge?

https://sports.yahoo.com/article/tennessee-chooses-state-law-over-185613660.html

I have no idea if there is anything to the story, but this sure seems like yet another example why the fuck the powers to be so to speak in college sports needed to act sooner and not wait for the courts and the politicians to get involved in this entire clusterfuck.

Most of the people on the planet who agree with this either attended Duke or paid tuition for a family member to attend Duke.

This isn't just academics. Duke isn't Stanford when it comes to academics, but it is close. Stanford wins a lot of titles in sports that no one cares about. Duke has (I think) 5 men's basketball titles.

Hopefully it goes without saying that if you draw a circle around the idea of the pure value of the actual undergrad education (excluding the prestige of the piece of paper), Stanford is not any better than anywhere else.  Educating undergrads is low on the priority of Stanford professors, and most professors at research schools

If you do throw the whole picture in, there is no place like Stanford. Grad schools, connections, numbers of sports, home of Olympians, relative success in sports, passable success in the big three, connections, the fucking weather, and connections.

The conference realignment is cause for concern, but to me, less so in terms of not having a place to play football then it affecting the plethora of sports and especially having Olympians there.

Yep I don’t think it’s really realignment related more…realignment adjacent.

Tennessee won’t be kicked out of the SEC because ultimately they are in the right here. This genie is not going back in the bottle. Tennessee was on probation multiple times and Alabama (who did the same under the table shit) never was. They do NOT want to go back to that system which was obviously stacked against them and I don’t blame them one iota.

According to that article, they’re still on probation until 2028, from that Pruitt shit. But nothing happened because their state law prohibits the ncaa from enforcing any penalties. Their Attorney General threatened to sue the ncaa if they tried to enforce a post-season ban, and they didn’t.

Now TN just recently enacted this new law that pretty much prohibits both state and private institutions in a P4 conference from following the house settlement. It also prohibits those same institutions from signing any agreement to follow the house settlement.

That’s pretty fucking funny.

Agree it isn't realignment related, but think it is more an indication of the clusterfuck that college sports has become with the influence of THE network, conference realignments that range from strategic alliances to outright greed and panic movers, resistance to change and ineffectual leadership from the NCAA, college presidents, college AD, and conference leaders, and the involvement of the courts and politicians.

The one thing I do think that will have to happen in the future will be at some point the schools and whatever conference(s) survive there is going to happen to be some agreement to work together.

How much can it cost to run a college bowling program?

To a certain extent, it doesn't matter how much it costs. We know it's not free.  It's almost certainly not profitable. It doesn't have irrefutable tangible or even intangible benefits. So even at a D1 school like Sam, it's a target.

Universities everywhere are pinching every penny. It's not just about sports, which on the whole cost more than they bring in except at a very few schools like Texas and Ohio State. So schools like Sam are going to see a lot more of this, as will many of the lesser P4 schools. A lot more of it is coming, because things are no better on the academic side and that's ostensibly what schools are there for.

I expect SFA to lead the Pac/MW resurgence, using NIL money pouring in from a couple of low-key but filthy rich pyramid-scheme entrepreneurs.  The school will parlay its secret East Texas right-wing political contacts into lucrative agreements with the Qatari government, which is still smarting from its failed relationship with A&M (as if there is any other kind with Aggies). SFA will thrive on all fronts and will be the only real in-state threat to UT's power base in 10 years.

Well, now that you've twice made the effort to bring my mistake to the attention of everyone, I will own it, because I simply misread and never noticed until you so astutely picked out the most important aspect of the entire 743 pages of this thread.

I'll be damned if I'm gonna move on, though, as there's clearly a bowling crowd on here that needs to be served. There's also the whole nit-picking crowd that's probably starting to smell blood, and probably a few idoits and pre-Madonnas as well, and it won't take much to get us up to F2.

In fact, we may already be their, so the grammar Nazis can also have they're say, even though it's not really grammar but simply spelling and punctuation, although one could argue that's kinda grammar too, because why not. And that's not just a rhetorical question, or maybe it is?

Besides, I said "like Sam" both times, and SFA is "like" Sam in that both "SFA" and "Sam" have three letters, the first being "S" and another being "A," and they're both in East Texas, and they're both smaller schools, sort of, or at least used to be, and Sam Houston has a women's bowling team, and both used to be members of the Southland Conference although only one of 'em is now but both are D1 although both aren't FBS, and both are named after Texas heroes although I'm sure some folks would argue about one of 'em being better than the other or less than the other, because this is an internet football forum. And not just any forum, but Surly, so hell yeah, let's go.

But whatever. Now I'll probably do it again just for fun.
