Going to the National tonight at Moody. Haven’t been to Austin since 2016. Things are a little different here.

Wife and I will be there tonight on the floor. Things are definitely different here from 2016. Still love this town. And looking forward to the show.

Ditto, first time at the Moody. I bought parking at the Manor garage, have I made a huge mistake?

I did the same. We’ll probably both regret it afterwards.

nah, you would have big time if it was a football game because that fucking place is a shitshow afterwards because there is only one road with one lane to exit out on to MLK and dipshits want to try and turn left with no light.  dumb to the power of infinity.

but for a limited scale concert like tonight where they aren't even opening the upper decks, it won't be a big deal unless you are on the top floor and get there right when everyone else leaves.

i really like like ten national songs a lot and there are tickets in pretty good spots for <$50 so thinking about grabbing a couple and going.

So I very rarely go to shows, and really don't know much about music, but I foist upon you my worthless takes:

1)  Parking at Manor was fine, though I thought I was being clever parking on the bottom level by the exit, only to find myself redirected back up to where I came in.  Oh well.  Wasn't crowded when we left, because while my kid had a great time, he was exhausted and has to work tomorrow, so we skipped the encore.
2)  Hadn't seen the National live before.  Show was quite good, with a mix of old and new.  But does Matt Berninger have allergies (he's just like us!), or always sound like Bert with a head cold live?
3)  If Bryan Devendorf isn't the greatest drummer out there right now, please tell me who is so that I can listen to them.
4)  Moody was pretty nice, but I was a little underwhelmed.  The seats are hideously uncomfortable.  As discussed above, maybe it's better when packed full, but see point 5 below.
5)  People suck and I hate them.  STFU.  Maybe have a conversation on the concourse instead.  Maybe quiet moments in a song weren't put there for you to go WOO WOOOOOO.  And how many times do you need to get up and down and up and down during a 2hr show?  /oldmanyellsatcloud
6)  Though we didn't stick around for the encore, that rendition of About Today was pretty fucking incredible and (despite the efforts of point 5 above) a great finish for us.

Good time and glad we went, though yeah, I think I would have loved it more at ACL Live.

I agree with the comments about the Moody Center, but man the setlist last night was pretty spectacular.

This.   It was perfect.  I quite enjoyed the show and the venue but I was on the floor.  I could see it being a less ideal experience in the seats.  Someone upthread asked why they aren’t playing the ACL theater - that holds less than 3k I believe.  Moody was too big but outside of going out to 360 at COTA, everything else is way too small for them now.  Perhaps Moody Amphitheater.  I don’t know.  But they are “in between” in this town.  A tight 7k hall would be perfect.

I thought it was a fantastic show with a whole lot of deep cuts. I think Austin brings that out of them with their SXSW and ACL history. Glad I made the drive down.

Lit Up.   Available.  Neither I’ve seen them play, I don’t believe, and this is my 8th show including ACL Festival.

And they have a new live banger in Smoke Detector.

Got dragged to the national by the lady friend. That crowd was terrible. So many people talking through the music and endless arguments about people standing up. We moved to one of the empty sections on the side a few songs into the set. I generally find the national very boring. Live show was slightly better but still didn't do much for me.

Man, he's so good with a very unique style. I don't think he gets talked about enough.

I think I'm just done with the Moody Center. I've seen some excellent bands there and sat all around the place, and every single time I've been disappointed. It's just too echo-y and the sound all blends together in a mush. I made it a point to get seats right behind the sound board for this one and it still sucked. I'm sure I'll be temped back at some point, but ugh..

While I'm bitching - why is it so hard to find your seats in that place? There are numbered "portals" all around the arena to get to the seats, but they don't correspond to the sections in any discernable way. There is no obvious signage for the sections, just for the portals. And the maps that show the layout seem to be spaced out 100 yards apart.

Every time I've been I end up walking aimlessly looking for one of the maps to see which portal I need to use, and then inevitably walking and equal or greater distance in the opposite direction because the portal I needed was the other way. It makes no sense - am I missing some trick to it?

I was in 115 fairly close to the front and I thought the sound was great. My balls vibrated during Smoke Detector. That was the one I was most wanting to hear off the new album. Glad I got it. The poster for the show was terrible. Planning to get a Sad Dads shirt tomorrow in Irving since it makes my kids laugh.

Any recommended tracks to hear this?  I just listened to "Smoke Detector" and he kinda reminded me of Jim Eno (Spoon).  High enough praise, for sure, but not ground-breaking.

Good show, a third of it was really great. Venue and crowd sucked. One of my favorite bands, but Matt may have the most limited vocal range of anyone I’ve ever seen live, maybe 6 notes before he gets really pitchy. I absolutely love how The National uses horns. It’s so innovative and adds really amazing depth.

I guess I’m getting old because I really hated smoke detector. Felt like that phrase was in the song twenty times at least.

Floor is the only way to go at the moody center if you are willing to stand the whole time. Sound down there is great. We started in section 111 and the sound was good, moved over to 107 and the view was better but there was definitely a lot of echo. I've never had a problem finding my seats, it tells you which portal to use on your ticket and finding your section seems pretty straightforward from there.

Deap Vally absolutely slayed last night. I went to the show last night really looking forward to seeing the opener, L.A. Witch. They had a lackluster set and didn't play most of their top songs. I was underwhelmed.
I wasn't expecting much from Deap Vally and wow was I wrong. They were fucking awesome.4f84299def1c7f97be30cecd86c9f4b6.jpg

Took the kiddo to see Ed Sheeran last night in London at Prince Albert Hall. Can’t say I was a big fan of the man prior to this but I left with a new found respect. He really was amazing. He was doing a two night stint promoting his new album. He played the new album in its entirety and then did another hour on his hits.

Wife and I are going tonight. Just texted you and @Jive Turkey. Going to Two Mules Cantina for pregame.

I’ve seen Deap Vally a few times and they’re my daughter’s favorite band. They’ve always put on a good show. When my kid was in 5th grade she submitted a photo of herself with the band to her school yearbook and it got published. Julie is wearing a marijuana leaf stage outfit and Lindsay is holding a Miller Lite. Still gives me a laugh years later.

LOL at me trying to contribute to a @jimmyjazz music discussion.  I am not remotely qualified, but I'll throw out a few that have struck me, from the standpoint that when a know-nothing like me notices the drummer, it's either a very good or very bad thing.

Thanks, I'll check 'em out.  I'm certainly not any kind of drummer expert.

viben and the submersibles is an unforgivably bad band name. if they aren't a jamband they really should be.

Yeah they're kind of a new disco/funk/jam band.  Fun live show.  Seen them at Empire before.

Was offered tix to Porno for Pyros tonight but can't go :(

Saw Brownout and a couple of other bands on Saturday at Central Machine Works.  Always put on a great show and their covers of Black Sabbath and Public Enemy are always on point.

Based on your post, I paid attention to him during last night's show in Las Colinas. I'm not any authority on drummers and their prowess or not but it seems to me like he's quite good at what he does.

The show was great. Matt's voice is completely wrecked at times. I've been a huge fan since Alligator so I roll with it. I'm sure a less-avid fan would find it irritating at points.

Got to hang with @Jive Turkey and his wife before the show, which was great. Hadn't seen him in several years. Surprised the show started as early as it did. @mdmost texted Jive while we were at Two Mules across the street saying he thought they were about to go on. That was around 8-ish. We quickly paid out and walked over while the band was on the third song. We missed "Eucalyptus" and "Tropic Morning News."

I have a chance to go see them Sunday. I know nothing. Worth it?

Absolutely worth it.  One of the best live bands I've seen in years.  Really cool sound out of two guys.  (Guitar sound is generated by running the bass through an octave pedal is my guess.)
