This is kind of odd now. Like flipping a coin and having it land on heads 10 times in a row (besides that time it landed on Turntine).

It's not a coin flip. Don't take the 9.95ers so literally. When they say something is 50/50 it just means they don't know shit

Not really. This isn’t 50/50 stuff in any way.

Yeah, Tennessee was on Rouse for far longer than we were. Rouse wasn't even on the upcoming commitment graphic OTF made two weeks ago.

Didn't mean they were all literal coin flips. Bad choice of words.

Early July straw poll

Over/under final class rank: 5.5

Pos rep this post if you think under (i.e., top 5 class). Neg if you think over (i.e., 6th or worse).

Can’t rep my own post but for the record I’ll take the under.

I went Rage rather than Neg. I’m not seeing a path to top 5 at this point.

It seems strange to not be able to pull at Top 5 class when we have a lot going for us at this point.  2 straight years in the playoffs, NIL/$ like other top schools, in the SEC, Arch Manning Era about to begin, developing multiple NFL draft picks at numerous positions.  You watch Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama pull in top 5 classes year after year, so I am surprised more kids aren't picking us.  Not that we should get everyone, but Texas should be getting enough kids for a Top 5 class pretty easily every year at this point unless the wheels fall off the program.

Vaguely spoiling incoming commitments is probably the most annoying thing Hayes does. Really don't get what On3 gets out of employing him.

I assume this post is about Matthews or Carlton. But I'm pretty sure he also made one of these for Guervil so....

Isn't that because he didn't announce a commitment time until this week?

It’s hard to figure. If there were other forces at play, like hot Sark-to-NFL rumors or something, we would have heard about it by now.

Best I can come up with is that every circumstance is different and we have run into some just plain bad luck. Tech decided that Ojo was a guy they absolutely had to have. Same with Florida and Guervil. Always seemed like our staff liked the two legacy WRs but maybe had them a tier below the best of last year’s class. We got in on Rouse a little late. And so on.

This isn’t going how we as fans expected, or how the last couple cycles played out, or I’d wager how the coaches planned. But if we have lots of dry powder it ought to be an entertaining fall.

Mea culpa, I think you're right about that.

Something I haven’t seen answered anywhere is how exactly are revenue sharing payments structured? Are these players signing contracts with athletic departments?  Because if that’s the case there won’t be flips and you can basically punt on this class,

Wouldn't you have to be 18 in most states to enter a binding contract?

All these fan bases who hate Texas, some of whom saw us whip their team, are really motivated after watching us rake in talent and win more games than their dumb asses.  For each school you are in a battle with it only takes one crazy deal to sway the decision.  And we are in battles with seemingly different schools for every one of them.  Maybe we should try not winning so much and we can recruit better.  It also doesn't help that collectives are muted.

If we win 10 or more regular season games, the flips will come.

How many of the guys who chose Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, A&M, or Texas Tech over us actually care about wins on the field as their top priority? That sounds like a very outdated sentiment.

Why would 10 wins this year matter when back to back playoffs didn't?

So Datoilet is going to turn down every deal they arbitrarily decide is too high? Or will they take all these deals and use that as baselines for their “fmv”? Either way they’re about to have their asses sued all over the country. Seems to me the best strategy is to operate your nil just as you have been doing the previous 2-3 years and force them to turn down a deal and sue them. Seems like strictly following rules that no one seems to know is fucking stupid strategy.

"Dillingham said he’s seen contracts that also permit schools to end or reduce a player’s salary over the course of the deal, something reported earlier this spring by Yahoo Sports via Illinois law professor Michael Leroy, who uncovered more than 90 different player contracts through open-records requests.

'These NIL contracts read like employee handbooks that reserve a right of employment at will for employers,” he said. “They don’t use ‘at will’ but the concept is, they can terminate the contract.'”

There's going to be a whole bunch of fuckery, some kids are going to get Jordan Addisoned, some schools are going to come off looking very bad, and some extremely expensive players are not going to contribute meaningfully - at least not initially - despite intense pressure to do so. It's going to be an interesting season

This just reinforces my belief that this recruiting class is absolutely cooked. Because nothing gives me any indication that Texas was actually prepared for this. Maybe Texas is proven right down the road and this blows up in people’s face, that fallout will happen after this class in on campus.

This is my issue.   The two draft classes and two playoff appearances on paper should translate to top 5 recruiting easily.   But it just doesn't seem to be going that way.   The roster is stacked, yes, but boy is the pressure fucking on.  Can't afford to slip or the no 7 class can become a no 10 class, etc.

Were Texas the second choice of each of the nation's 5-star prospects, that would sound really impressive. Until you realize we actually signed no one. But let's see where it goes from here. Just glad we already have verbals from some stud linemen, Bell and Bishop.

Maybe I'm still drinking the Kool-Aid but I think a few flips are a real possibility. I know it's been a very frustrating summer but, as has been pointed out, we're actually ahead of where we were at this point last year.  I also wonder if maybe we have a bit of a target on our back after coming into the SEC and not only not falling on our face, but being a missed kick away from winning the conference (GOD FUCKING DAMMIT, BERT), making the semis (and in pretty spectacular fashion, given the way we beat ASU), being a halfway decent red zone call away from being tied with the "unbeatable" national champ Buckeyes, pulling the No. 1 class, and doing all of that while taking local guys away from UGA, LSU, Florida, Auburn, and USC.  It also seems like it's worth noting that the staff likes Turntine (who's not exactly low rated), Okpala, Howard, Robertson, and Riley significantly more than the $9.99 crew does. Maybe Brown and Wright, too? I have no idea. At the very least, I'm hopeful for Howard

But maybe that's just typical "my team just got beat for a bunch of highly rated guys" cope? Again, I have no idea - but I do know that Sark has pulled off some awesome flips and that some of his 3 star takes look pretty fucking good

PS Fuck Lott and fuck Finley. Unless they flip. If that happens, they've always been incredible prospects with my complete support. Also, fuck aggy, OU, Tech, and Baylor. There's no caveat here. Fuck them always and forever

I've heard lots of basketball and, with the new transfer rules, football coaches talk about how there really is value in finishing second in these things because, when a rival school breaks promises, isn't the right fit, or otherwise fucks up with the recruit that you wanted, that connection is there and ready

Will it work out that way for us? Almost certainly not. That kind of shit never does. But hold your head high anyway. We're TEXAS and our academics are totally, 100%, absolutely better than Stanford. At least that's what I read on this board

Think like a 17 year old. The December signing period is approaching. You are committed to a school that will miss the playoffs. Texas is going to the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, perhaps as the favorite to win it all. Texas lets you know they have upped their NIL offer and it is close to the offer at your committed school. It isn't a 100% certainty, but the emotions of that moment will really impact a high school kid.

Chad Simmons (On3 National guy) on Samari Matthews

4-star CB Samari Matthews

South Carolina was long considered the team to beat for Samari Matthews, and the Gamecocks are in the final two, but we like where Texas sits with a decision date of July 11 approaching. Mark Orphey has led the charge for the Longhorns. Matthews may be a little closer with the staff overall in Columbia, but his connection with Orphey may be his strongest. This is an SEC battle, but Texas remains in the pole position with a decision nearing.

In what has become a theme in this recruiting class, Texas finished second on two very talented players yesterday. Close but no cigar.

Sure, it’s disappointing. Any recruiting loss is. But some folks need to take a deep breath and step away from the ledge.

After all, Texas already has 17 commitments, is ranked in a higher spot currently to where it was at this time last year, and there is the fact that Steve Sarkisian and his staff have proven themselves capable time and again of bringing in elite prospects before the final recruiting curtain closes.

All any recruiting loss really does at this time of year is up the stakes for Texas on the remaining prospects and/or on the prospects Texas will continue to recruit despite a public commitment elsewhere. Texas, and Sark in particular, has seen this play before and risen to the occasion.

So that’s where we are now. The stakes just got higher.

Texas is at 17 commitments. The Longhorns ultimately want to land anywhere between 25-27 scholarships come signing day.

Remember, it’s who you add in recruiting, not who you lose.

They need an RB, another OL, a TE, a couple of DLs, an LB or two and a top-tier CB.

Piece by piece, I have confidence Sark will get the Texas recruiting class there. Yes, even amidst all the changes in NIL and recruiting that I am well aware of.

Overall, I’m not sure I can adequately put into words just how strongly I believe and have faith in the paragraph above. I think Texas will finish recruiting with an elite class.

Anyone who leaves the theater now is overreacting and they’re doing so before the close of the first act and well before the second act even begins.
