Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

Lines like this piss me off.  Were we not doing Big Boy recruiting the last two years?  We were.  We just won more of the battles where Texas was the final one or two or three schools left.  This year we aren't.  It's not a huge thing as we still are sitting solid and we seem (based on the reporting) have a few players lined up that are leaning Texas for now who if we get we would all be ecstatic about.  So what else has changed:

I think losing Choice has had an impact.   I believe in prior years we had our #1 RB locked in by July 1, but it's not like I have gone off and confirmed that.  By all reports, Choice was a very good recruiter.

The Changing NIL Landscape.  - The change in NIL with the settlement and its impact this year has created a unique one-off.  Schools feel that to some extent NIL rules will be equalized this time next year so they are attempting to get in ahead of some of these changes and grandfather in things they think won't count against a cap/etc.  Also in general, Texas was ahead of the game with NIL and support along with a small handful of schools and now other schools are catching up.

I am still not worried in the slightest though because we should hit on a high enough number of elite players to have an elite class overall.  Second, I feel that the staff does an exceptional job at evaluation and some of the players we keep recruiting despite a commitment or circled back to after missing on an initial target (late bloomers or players committed to other schools out of the gate)  the last two years have been good.  I thought TyAnthony Smith, Kobe Black, and Wardell Mack when I was typing this, but truthfully I can't remember.  I'm sure someone in here will correct me if I am wrong.

Finally, the staff seems to do an exceptional job of evaluating its roster and finding a transfer player or two or three to lock down at positions of need.  So even if we have a hole, we seem to do an exceptional job of finding a transfer as the worst case scenario.

The cycle isn’t over yet. There is ALWAYS late movement at just about every major player. We finished very strongly last year.

We’re going to be fun to watch this season and we will get more NIL aggressive. We’ll be fine.
Beating UGa and Ohio State in their backyards this year will help perception too.

They do this every single year if you'll pay attention.  Take anything they say up through the start of the season with a grain of salt.

They have a much more realistic outlook once we get down to a couple of targets and flip season

If you bring that up to them they hide behind "we've said all along this is big boy recruiting and anything can change at any moment". Honestly, I haven't listened to any of their shows in well over a month. It's not really worth the listen until August again.

Not for nothing, but it’s fine for you to just not post anything when you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.

Surly if every poster embraced this mindset…

I generally agree with each aspect of this post. The one nit to pick is that Texas can maintain a competitive advantage in NIL, should it choose to do so. Having more access to capital than most other programs is a competitive advantage for the few schools who find themselves in that situation.

Lol. I’m pretty sure twin peaks was a 90s show for teen girls. Not surprising to see people on this board talking about it

It’s actually a low-end sports bar and restaurant, a knock off of Hooters.

I’m surprised you don’t know this

They've been big game hunting for years now, but this cycle does seem to be a notch higher with the amount of high-profile OOS guys. Last year, we had 7 top 100 players from Texas (Williams, Lockett, Phillips, Jackson, Terry, Barnes and Townsend). This cycle that number could be as few as 3-4.

We were never getting Lee, Roseborough, Ojo, and Turntine, but that is who Gerry continually brought up as top targets when peppered with questions about OL recruiting all spring, so some got it stuck in their mind that those must be the most likely guys to end up in the class. Then, when a few go elsewhere, they wonder what happened.

I also think some of what has happened has just been some shitty timing with a bunch of guys who probably weren't ending up here lining up their announcements all in a row.

Florida has had a rough time with DL recruiting in 2026 and there’s some talk they’re upping the NIL offer for Sunshine State four-star Kendall Guervil.

We still believe Texas looks good here, but UF is desperate and could make this interesting ahead of his announcement this week.

Texas Longhorns

251.png&w=110&h=110

Current ESPN class ranking: No. 7

The Longhorns landed their first-ever No. 1 class in the ESPN recruiting rankings era (since 2006) last cycle, and coach Steve Sarkisian & Co. have set themselves up to contend for another in 2026 with a productive month of June of recruiting along the defensive line.

Texas' top-ranked 2025 class included four defensive linemen, headlined by five-star Justus Terry. But the flood of talent out of the Longhorns' defensive line room this offseason meant the team needed to continue adding at the position for 2026. With the June additions of Corey Wells, Dylan Berymon and Vodney Cleveland, Texas holds more top-20 defensive tackle pledges than any program nationally. In the June 22 commitment of five-star pass rusher Richard Wesley, No. 11 in the 2026 ESPN 300, the Longhorns landed an impact playmaker on the edge and headliner for the program's incoming defensive line class.

Well stocked on the defensive line, the rest of Texas' 2026 cycle will be defined by the program's success elsewhere in the coming month. Five-star targets Tyler Atkinson and Felix Ojo have the potential to supercharge the Longhorns' 2026 class. Additions of top 100 prospects John Turntine III, Trenton Henderson and Jamarion Carlton could be in the cards, too.

June's biggest winners...This will get some of you even more worked up I'm sure.

I hate to admit this and will probably regret saying it, but I am very much in "trust the corches" mode. The staff has given us every reason to be confident that they will close on the guys they need and will pull most of the guys they want.

Until they show us otherwise, I'm not sweating a thing.

Full update from Florida On3 mod

Yes I know the buzz thats been out there points to 4-star Kendall Guervil ending up at Texas when he commits on July 2.

However, I heard today that he and UF remain in contact, and there is still a feeling on UF's end that they are still battling for him. Most of the info we've heard since he set his commitment date points to Texas. He's named them his No. 1 for a few months, and it's felt like him setting a commitment date while on his Texas OV is telling. Wouldn't say I've heard any sort of confidence or optimism yet on UF's end. Hell, Texas still is confident I'm told.

Just passing along that I was told UF doesn't feel like they are out of it as they try to fight for him these last few days before his commitment date. I'm assuming NIL is what the key piece will have to be for this to turn another way.

Will update if we hear anything more on this.

Getting myself back on track - I was listening to the most recent OTF livestream and Bobby kept saying that Calicut had committed to Texas but that it was a "private commitment" that didn't go public. So I'm guessing Calicut was one of Gerry's "hi" comments and it hasn't panned out. So now we're down to two silents who have yet to announce, am I remembering that correctly?

It's also frustrating that silent commitments still aren't worth shit, even with NIL deals on the table.

The “hi’s” are stupid.

This board knows silent commitments are useless but still gets excited over every “hi”.

People follow silents because they represent hope and reasons for optimism about a class. If they didn't find them entertaining in some form, they wouldn't be following recruiting. I don't put much stock into them any more than the rest of us on this board, but they don't bother me. They don't bother any of the rest of you, either, or you wouldn't be here.

Derrek Cooper no longer committing July 12.

I don't see Texas as a serious contender here, but that can't be bad news for Texas. See if you can't get him to watch some of the season and how it plays it for everyone. See if other NIL coffers get depleted and the price becomes worth it to Texas. Etc., and so on.

If Miami is his play, then getting him to watch some of the season would be helpful. Beck's plain as grits, still hurt to some degree and they don't have a solid backup. They lost everyone with starting experience at RB, WR, and TE. They have James Brockermeyer starting for them at C. On defense, they have one guy with 5.5 sacks returning and another with 3.5. They lost 8 defensive starters. They open the season with Notre Dame, Bethune Cookman, South Florida and Florida in the first 21 days. They don't play Clemson, GT, or Duke, all of whom should be good, but they do get Louisville, FSU, Syracuse, SMU, NC State, and Pitt, so the ACC tilts may not be total crap.

It's been established that you're clearly wrong regarding what Twin Peaks was all about, unsurprisingly. What hasn't been addressed is why you think the demographics of this forum would suggest an interest in show for "teen girls" from the '90s?

Well, in the idiot's defense, David Lynch (RIP) was well know for his copious amounts of teen-girl audience film productions.

Is it possible that we are seeing some schools catch up to or in a few cases surpass Texas in NIL resources, reducing some of the advantages Texas has had in the last few cycles? Last year it started to look like that, but obviously Texas finished strong anyway. Maybe the financial pressure is even greater this year?

I continue to believe this is just the typical summer recruiting we see every year. But maybe I’m wrong.

Just because Texas has one of the largest NIL pools, it does not mean they will be the highest bidder in every recruitment. Its like any market, you are generally at the whim of the dumbest buyer. Texas has navigated this market well and we have seen that with strong closes in the last few classes. Perhaps I have buried my head in the sand, but I think this cycle will play out similarly.

Uhhh I like you as a poster but this is just so laughably wrong. I’ve lived in Port Aransas and Honolulu. There’s just no way to compare the two, at all.

Side note, I took this photo a couple of days ago on the windward side of Oahu as it was pretty clearly someone on a UH recruiting visit getting their hype photos taken.  I did not hear much in the way of Texas gulf coast comparison talk.

Anyway, I hope Lee opts for Texas for any reason he likes.

So we get NO too?

Take that, merge to there's only 2 senators for all of it, cut the DC house representatives by half, and divide the total electoral votes by 10 and let's do it.

This is true but there is more to the story. First, certain schools are committing money that simply isn’t there (USC J Addison). Second, Texas tries to avoid bidding wars, especially early in the cycle. Once early signing day approaches, and Texas assesses needs, it will make final offers for the guys it needs and covets. Doing such offers now, gives teams months to counter, and waiting until the end lessens the likelihood of counters and helps us use the season performance as an additional equalizer.

Also, with Guervil specifically, we've all been enjoying watching Florida miss on their entire DL board and get big projected NIL guys get poached by us, UGA, and LSU. The flipside to that is that they're sweaty and desperate and have money to burn.

Nahlin is hyping up Moore- I don’t see it, but sure- it’s possible I guess.
DJ Campbell for sure.  Travis Shaw maybe?

hopefully Arch has a decision to make after winning a Heisman and National title and decides to come back.
Tre Wiesner.   Moore.
None of this is prediction, just plausible guys that could go.
if it’s not 10 again it should be close.

It's a very thin year in the draft for WR so a solid year from Moore probably means he leaves imo. In comparison the 2027 WR class is LOADED.

Derrek Cooper note

Texas remains in contact with the 5-star RB from Hollywood (Fla) Chaminade-Madonna.

The Longhorns simply want Cooper to make an OV during the season for a game weekend.

Texas wanted him to make a weekend OV in June, but Cooper’s family didn’t want to cancel a weekend OV to schools that had been recruiting him 1.5-2 years.

Cooper announced today on X that he will no longer be announcing a decision July 12.

Georgia, Miami, Ohio State and Texas in contention.
