The other thing a fg previously does, assuming a stop still happens, is that a fg this drive would mean a stop and one final fg would win the game. 
 

going for it last drive almost makes you have to go for it this drive if it gets to that point.

yep.  and that is why you take the FG.  your hope to win the game is not tie it up and go to OT on a TD drive it is to win it in regulation by hoping your D can shut them out.

agreed.  and you have to bet on your best unit to rise to the occasion not the one that has been pretty damn inept.
