I’ll clarify up front that I am not saying any of these guys will be as good as the comps I am  about to make became. But….

- Sengun’s metrics are on par with 22-24 yo Jokic.

- Green and Booker’s stats through age 22 are almost identical but Booker was the only scoring option on a worse team. He was a great stats bad team guy until he wasn’t.

- Amen is a bigger Westbrook with more basketball smarts.

- Jabari should be a senior in college.

Everyone is still so damn young, we still don’t know what we have for better or for worse.

I am all for trading any of Green, Whitmore, Sheppard and even Eason/Smith this offseason if it gets a top 20 guy.  I’ll even listen to requests for Sengun if Giannis is on the table.

But please no Trae Young or LaMelo.

But knowing this is a good regular season team now, if the right offer isn’t on the table, I am also reluctantly OK with running it back, and having FVV’s and Brooks’ expirings, Green, and rookie contracts  to flip at the deadline for a star.

But Sheppard has to get more run next year or that pick is a bust year two given the guys drafted behind him that are contributing.

That’s what I’m saying. Are we just young? Have certain guys hit their ceiling regardless of age and will start regressing? That happens way more than they all develop into stars. Have to have a great gm with balls to pull the trigger on which ones need to go for already established upgrades.

personally think Sheppard was a bad pick and he will be a off the bench guy maybe. Not sure how many top 4 picks got zero playing time in the playoffs and ended up a great player? I’d say not many. We have the assets to upgrade the roster but the timing is the key. I wouldn’t want Stones job that’s for sure.

Second seed in a brutal west with a crazy young team in their first playoff, tons of valuable future draft capital, really good cap management , and just happened to lose to a championship squad that got boosted at the trade deadline with an all time great in game 7. Makes perfect sense to blow the whole thing up for an aging star. What the hell is wrong with you people?

The biggest concern is guy who won't compete, that isn't about experience, that is based upon what you have inside of you.

Terrible cliche', but you either are willing to fight or you won't and that is my biggest concern about players such as Jalen and Jabari. How in the world does anyone take Jalen seriously when multiple times this series he says after a game he has to be better only to piss down his leg the next game.

Don't get me started on Jabari and Alpi shooting fade aways over shorter players.

You have to compare the situations.  How many top 4 picks have landed on a team that finished top 2 the next year?

Our biggest weakness was (and still is) shooting, so we got the best shooter in a weak draft.  Given the current construction of the team, who picked after Reed would have made a bigger contribution?  Maybe Edey could have taken some Adams minutes?

Like I said earlier, I see no reason that Reed can't eventually play the Buddy Hield role for this team.

Sheppard biggest issue is his size. Maybe he will end up something and maybe he won’t. As of now he hasn’t done anything at all except play like a late first round or second round pick. And if he’s great it doesn’t matter what seed we are he would be playing if he’s that good.  Ime seems to want to build a east coast defensive, grind it out roster and game plan than getting shooters and scorers.

Posted (edited)

Way too early to make any call on Reed. He played basically no minutes all season. Flashed at times. Dominated in the G league.

And he is only 20

If he was on San Antonio playing 30 mins a night he could have been rookie of the year for all we know.

If Brooks is still on the roster next season he needs to be coming in off of the bench

Amen is the only untouchable piece. Don’t overpay for Durant or any star over 30. Stone’s job is about to get much more difficult.

I mostly agree. I don't understand the fans who want to go all in and give away most of our assets for a 37yo KD (isn't this what PHX just tried?) and maybe a 2-3 year window before we're in a rebuild again. I wouldn't cry if they moved Green or Jabari. FVV and Brooks are overpaid and could be moved (FVV has a trade kicker though, and I don't know if they could/would move him after getting him to agree to a less $/yr extension). Fans seem ready to ship off Cam and Reed. Cam has a dirt cheap salary, lots of potential, and likely wouldn't get much trade value based on his limited minutes. Reed is fairly cheap and hasn't got minutes, but we drafted him to be a shooter and he can do that. Amen and Eason are up for extensions already too.

It should always be about value. If PHX is ready to dump KD and his salary, I'd give up two good young players (Green, Reed, Eason, Jabari?) or a pick or two and fill the rest out with enough salaries to match (FVV, Brooks, Landale, Jabari), but I wouldn't gut all assets for him, or even Giannis. They should have a $14m MLE to sign someone as well. But a team that looks like KD/Giannis, Sengun, Amen, FVV, Brooks, and whatever scraps are left with little future draft assets does not seem like a good short term or long term outlook.

Shepard's biggest issue is he played one year of college basketball as a 6th man.

Rockets were a deep team this year. The front office and players love him.

Agreed. I wanted to see postseason Jalen at some point, and now we've seen it. He's got to go. I don't care how much or little we get, just move him.

I can’t believe we are comparing Durant and Giannis.  I love KD. Hook ‘Em.  But, yeah, you do something like what the Clips did for Harden or maybe a little better.  Maybe Brooks, one of our bench vets and Green plus their pick back and a swap or two.

Giannis is a different story.  If he is on the table, no one but Amen is untouchable depending on combo of players. I’d do Brooks, Green, Sengun, and Whitmore plus picks if that is what it took.  Then go get 1 or 2 Cam Johnson types and/or a bench PG.  and I love Sengun but not more than I’d love to root for Giannis.

No one else responded but I will. I agree with you 100%, I’m sure it’s over reaction(welcome to surly) but Jalen green is supposed to be our star and he averaged 11ppg in 7 games and take away his one great game of 38 points and he’s averaging around 8ppg in the playoffs. For me keeping him hoping he figures it out is a bigger risk than trading him for an upgrade. I’m not down at all for KD and I guess if there’s no one else then keep him but he is not the guy. Everyone else is young but there’s some small moves we could make to improve our roster balance like shooters and not this eastern conference one we have right now. Offense is brutal in the playoffs.

This team is a consistently average 2 guard away from winning the series.

Green is talented, but his head is lost. Not a competitor today. Maybe tomorrow.

Replace him with a consistent 15 points and the Rockets win the series.

I would hate it but a swap of T Young for FVV would be a fit. Our size and D would cover his weakness on that end and his scoring would be complementary on offense.

Ime would murder Young with his bare hands during a game after Trae lets his man blow by him for the 15th time in a row.

KD will be a hell of a lot cheaper and can dictate where he goes.

It would be a positive move for his legacy if he could win a title with this young group.

Booker for Green is a better deal but might require running it back a season before the Suns are willing to deal him. Add some offense in a guy like M Monk or of that ilk for some instant offense and above Whitmore defense

Sadly I could see them running it back and trying to add some offense in place of Brooks etc. Hope Amen takes a leap and give Green one more year to figure it out.

Alpi, Thompson, J Smith and Tari could win with a superstar. That is the core I would focus on. My price would be high on Reed. Need to see what you have before selling low

The $60 million of FVV and Brooks is not impossible to trade (short term and they can still play) and they still have plenty of draft picks to sweeten the deal if needed

Again does anybody know what the Suns’ asking price was for Durant at the deadline. Zach Lowe said Miami passed because the price was too high. GSW seemed to have a trade in place, but Durant declined. If we assume the GSW trade for Butler was a similar package, the price could be:

Andrew Wiggins

Kyle Anderson

Protected first

Wiggins and Anderson couldn’t play dead for the Heat. Maybe Brooks or Green and an unprotected first gets it done for Durant to the Rockets?

Part of the problem is that trade deadline deals are very different from off-season deals. There is a lot more time and flexibility with teams right now than there is in February, and there will likely be more suitors and offers this time around.  The price will go up, as there will be more interested teams that can actually make it happen by finding a third team to help balance things. I don't know what they are going to want for it, but I don't think the Rockets are going to want to pay it.

The pool of teams is not as big as you think. Durant isn’t going to Atlanta or Orlando. He wants to win a title and has a very small window to do so.

I think if you add Durant to Orlando and they can keep Franz and Suggs in doing that, that team is pretty fricking good.  It’s a similar fix that Durant would bring to the Rockets.  Orlando and Rockets were very similar teams.  We just had better injury luck and were deeper.  But their best player is levels ahead of ours.

The problem is Orlando’s draft picks (I presume) aren’t worth much, particularly after that trade.  But I think they could package some group of Anthony Black, Isaacs, Cole Anthony, Mo Wagner, Wendell Carter, Jett Howard and picks to the Suns.

Edited to add….  A Carter/Isaacs, Banchero, Durant, F Wagner, Suggs lineup is pretty intriguing.

I was going to try and do this all in one post, but I think I'll tackle it in separate posts. First up: a ranking of the draft picks the Rockets currently own.

Picks:

  • 2025 Phoenix pick (we'll know the exact spot next Monday)

  • 2027 Brooklyn swap

  • 2027 Phoenix pick

  • 2027 Houston pick

  • 2028 Houston pick

  • 2029 Phoenix pick

  • 2029 Dallas pick

  • 2029 Houston pick (we get the two best of the three 2029 picks — I'm assuming we'll be better than Dallas and Phoenix so we won't have this pick)

  • 2030 Houston pick

  • 2031 Houston pick

My Ranking of the Top 5 picks (as of now):

  1. 2029 Phoenix

  2. 2027 Brooklyn swap

  3. 2027 Phoenix

  4. 2029 Dallas

  5. 2025 Phoenix (assuming it stays at #9)

Obviously this could change depending on lottery results, especially for the 2025 pick - if that pick jumps into the top 4 this pick immediately moves into the top 3.  Regardless, I’d be willing to trade the three least valuable of those five for KD, while holding onto the top two. For Giannis, I’d be willing to part with all five—though ideally, I’d swap one of them for one of our own picks (2027, 2028, 2030, or 2031).  The Rockets are certainly stacked when it comes to draft capital to involve in trades.  What does everyone else think regarding my ranking of all of the picks we currently have?

I think that all makes sense. I'd do either deal.

For the second part of my post, I want to rank the young core pieces on the Rockets in terms of trade value/asset quality:

1. Amen Thompson – This one should be universal among the fanbase: almost untouchable. I wouldn't include him in a deal for anyone outside of Jokic or Wemby—neither of which is happening. He CANNOT be moved this summer. Could he be the best player on a title team? He’s got a lot of work to do to get there, but the tools are there. At worst, he’s a top 2–3 player on a championship team. You don’t trade 22-year-olds with that floor and ceiling.

2. Alperen Şengün – After the playoffs, it’s clear to me that he could be the second-best player on a contender. He’s super skilled and brings some toughness, though he still has areas to improve. I think he’s a top-25 asset in the league. I’d include him in a Giannis deal if absolutely necessary—but he’s off the table in any KD trade talk.

3. Jabari Smith Jr. – Profiles as a reliable starter on a title team: solid defense, and capable of being a third scoring option. I’d think long and hard about including him in any deal this summer. He’d be on the table for Giannis, but probably not for KD.

4. Jalen Green – This one might be controversial. The tools are still there for him to be a potential league-leading scorer, but given who’s ahead of him on this list, I’d be fine including him in a deal for either Giannis or KD (or other upgrade options that become available).

5. Tari Eason – I know a lot of fans might have him ahead of Green right now, but to me, he’s a more erratic version of Jabari Smith Jr. If I’m choosing between the two, I’m taking Jabari without hesitation.

Hard to determine:

Reed Sheppard – I’d be very hesitant to include him in any trades this summer. He’s in line for a bigger role next year, and this postseason showed how badly we need shooting.

Cam Whitmore – I like his game, but he fits the mold of a guy who gets his numbers without necessarily helping the team win. Add in his clear frustration with his role, and he feels like the most obvious “sweetener” in a potential trade package. I’m not saying give him away—but he’s movable in the right deal.

Bottom line:
If we can get Giannis while keeping Amen, Jabari, and Sheppard, I’d give Milwaukee just about anything else they want.
If we can get KD while keeping Amen, Şengün, and Jabari, I’d do the same with Phoenix—though I’d still want to limit it to just three picks going out.

Good post.

I'm not as high on Jabari. He hasn't put on much (if any) weight on since his rookie year and isn't strong enough in the paint offensively or defensively. He did step up at times this postseason though. I agree that Tari has been erratic, which is disappointing. I have higher expectations of him and I think a lot of it is mental and he needs to lock in. But his style of play is more coveted IMO.

My list would probably be:

1. Amen

2. Sengun

3. Shepard - still all potential, but I believe the reports that team thinks he could be great

4. Tari

5. Jalen Green

6. Jabari

7. Whitmore

I'd probably move Jalen Green above Shepard but the cut line of guys I wouldn't include in a deal would end after Sengun, so... it wouldn't be about my preference it would be about my trading partners preference more than anything.

I'd move Sengun for Giannis in a heartbeat.  Other than that though your 1 & 2 would be untouchable.

IMO the unknown with Shepard probably overrates the value other teams would give him. He can ride off the potential card right now, while I think Jalen's postseason performance confirmed people's worst fears about him.

I don't get the Giannis talk at all. He is the type of player that would make Houston have to completely reconfigure their roster. Which seems dumb with all the roster building we've done over the last few years.

We need a scorer/shooter that can boost the half court offense. We need KD. Yeah, his game is on the decline as he gets older, but what he's doing now is the ideal fit. He won't demand the ball but has the ability to get easy buckets when the offense is sputtering.

i'd prefer the KD route too because 1) it wont cost as much in terms of assets, 2) it's not a complete reset of what we've been doing, and 3) i don't really like Giannis, but i do think the Rockets will be a real contender for him if he becomes available so i figure its worth talking about.

I'd love to something like KD for Brooks + Jalen + appropriate pick compensation (phx's 2025 and 2027 picks), bring back FVV and Adams, find a cheap shooter in free agency and roll in to 2025-26 with that sqaud.

Giannis is so good that you just figure it out. Sengun would be going out so you still have your big, and you have 4 other floor spacers and drivers ideally to play off of him.  You just want a top 5 guys so you have the best player in the series all the way through.  Those are usually the teams that win those series.  But yeah- KD, if he can stay healthy, probably puts this team over the top if it's Jabari and cap filler going out for him.

i'd prefer the KD route too because 1) it wont cost as much in terms of assets, 2) it's not a complete reset of what we've been doing, and 3) i don't really like Giannis, but i do think the Rockets will be a real contender for him if he becomes available so i figure its worth talking about.

I'd love to something like KD for Brooks + Jalen + appropriate pick compensation (phx's 2025 and 2027 picks), bring back FVV and Adams, find a cheap shooter in free agency and roll in to 2025-26 with that sqaud.

Agreed! You can just plug and play with KD, especially if shipping off Brooks in the trade. No major changes will be needed offensively, and Amen was already taking over for Brooks as the defensive specialist. Plus Durant is no slouch on that end.

I don't give a fuck about trading our 1st round picks. Do it. We built all this stuff up while we sucked, time to deploy them and be a championship contender.

Giannis is so good that you just figure it out.

Personally I have no interest in this strategy. I like a lot of our young players and what we've patiently built. The only piece this team is missing is a go-to scorer/shooter.

KD would be #1 choice for the offseason shopping.  If he's not available I'd think hard about Giannis. You can win a title with him and whatever is left after you make that deal- for sure. Giannis would have to want to come here before I'd trade for him, obviously. It's really hard to find anyone else to get super excited to add to the team that I feel like would put over the top (at least that makes any kind of sense). It's got to be a top 10 player or it's not worth making a big trade I'd think.  It's not like they have to do anything.

This is where I come in as well. yes, Giannis is still a great player, but he's 30+ and still can't shoot anywhere on the court outside of 10', including the FT line. We have a team full of those guys, and in today's NBA you need to be able to shoot the ball. Durant can shoot the ball, and we can build a very capable defensive team around him. Get him, and a true two, while keeping most of the core that showed up in the playoffs and everything is easier.

Durant also solved another issue for the Rockets, a guy that can initiate the offense in the half court when VanVleet is on the bench. A lineup of VanVleet, Thompson, Durant, Smith, and Sengun is interesting in concept.
