Some in the libertarian frame of mind do not understand that border patrol has long had the right to stop you based on reasonable suspicion that just can't be a hunch. You might win out in court if they don't have reasonable suspicion but there isn't a judge out there to protect you in the moment. If they pulled me over, I would just give my drivers license or whatever they ask for. It sucks but it gets you moving in the right direction ASAP.

I wouldn't, because that would get them moving in the "right" directly ASAP.  I might pretend to not understand English.

I vacationed in maine a couple weeks ago and drove past two no kings protests with about 50 people each in small coastal towns. One was in Wells on a monday and the other in Damriscotta on a friday.

Interestingly enough, there are many US flags and banners in those maine coastal towns. However, I didn’t get the maga vibe with them. It felt more nautical because ships at sea fly the flag of the country that they’re registered. It was very nice seeing the american flag all over and not getting the maga fake patriotism vibe.

I also met a couple of people visiting from scotland at portland head light. We were both shockingly lucky to get parking spots right by the lighthouse. Right time right place kinda thing. Everyone else was parking several hundred yards away. We both looked at each other and laughed like we found some cheat code and started chatting with each other. I thanked them for coming to the US on vacation. I try to be a bit of an ambassador when I meet people on vacation here from other countries.

One of the shops in Damriscotta doesn’t shy away from the dangers we face.

The store was packed with shoppers. I chatted with the owners briefly. They would fit in here.

I picked this up at their shop. It’s the size of a pack of cards. I like maine.

The silver lining is that if these folks find themselves destitute and on the street, their boy Donny now has a plan to ship them off to a camp.

There are jobs picking blueberries bitch. Get some sun and exercise and make a bit of cash.

I wonder how many big spenders from Asia and Europe have decided to visit friendlier countries.

Europeans have told us to kick rocks. They are definitely spending their money elsewhere. This is going to destroy so many businesses, supply chains and all of the stuff affiliated with it. A society does not collapse all at once, but ours is getting a big jolt of "we're screwed" right now.

Thats nothing. Just wait until tariffs plunge us into a global depression. We’ve been white knuckling and markets have been trading on vibes. The fundamentals are fucked worse than US manufacturing companies

Fully one third of the market is AI and AI vibe trades. It's wild. The music is gonna stop at some point, and then that economic calamity will be the impetus for the fascist crackdown.

Like it's been speculated around here, trump the innovator is DIY'ing his economic collapse that most fascist movements pivot upon

You say that name two more times and I’ll…..!!

I imagine him driving the country in his RV, intently studying the rules of every new campground, searching for some ambiguity so that he can provoke an event to create a reason to file another lawsuit.

Always love this stuff. Even the ones who think they're reasonable are just saying "come on man I just want to pay less while getting more in return."

The silver lining if SCOTUS overturns Obergfell is that this thread is really gonna fucking take off

At some point, a ‘Mussolini and the partisan’s’ ending might become more likely.   At some point, there are lines in the sand that people will not abide.  Truthfully, it doesn’t make any difference whether the line in the sand is an objectively reasonable one or not, or if many people support the thing others despise.  The only thing that matters is if a person goes Defcon 8 over a particular issue.   That’s when abortion clinics got bombed, historically.  While that issue didn’t move me to act, it convinced some very unhappy people to take action. When people lose their healthcare and access to hospitals - and watch their loved ones die - some people just might get salty about that.   Luigi out front should’ve told you.

Right now we are a deeply divided nation.  We are also a deeply divided nation with 1.2 firearms per citizen.   Instead of torches, the angry villagers have guns.   When people offer up the Nazi Germany example, that knee bending was not done in a nation with more firearms per capita than people.

They don't provide the raw numbers, which is unfortunate, because I think it would be less disturbing (there should be more Dem/lean Dem Americans than Rep/lean Rep), but according to Pew research it's a 55/31 split on gun ownership:

Correct. But it’s a damned near 100/0 split on nutcases. So my point still holds.

The Luftwaffe had 2700 aircraft to the Brits' 750 aircraft.  The Luftwaffe also brought a toxic stew of fascist arrogance to the game.  The RAF ended up with nearly a 2:1 kill ratio.  I'm feeling better about these parallels.

Until April of 2024, it had been decades since I owned a gun.   I now have 4.

Come and take it.

I'm in the market.  I don't know what's the best product for the average novice is, though.  I will definitely get training.

shotgun or .22 or both. don't bother with big, power handguns unless you plan to spend a lot of time at a range

Meh.  Just took my new .45 1911 out to the range for the first time.  The boy and I each cycled several mags through it.  Pretty damned foolproof.  Sure, it throws some thunder, but nothing you can't handle once you get the hang of it after 3-4 rounds.

But yeah, I usually advise newbies to get a shotgun and a revolver in something like .38 (even more foolproof than an auto).

Find a range that has rentals.  I probably shot 25-30 different 9mm handguns before I decided on what I wanted.   This also meant that I got to shoot several pistol caliber carbines and regular rifles too.

I dont carry and just wanted something that was easy to shoot so I went with a full size Walther PDP.

16 months later and I have 2 handguns and 2 rifles.

Whatever I get, I will have to locker it away from the house for awhile.  It might be nonideal for home protection but our grandson lives with us and my wife would shit a brick if a gun was on site.  I'm not actually worried about home protection, anyway.  I just want to know how to shoot.  (I don't think my Crosman CO2 BB gun as a teenager really prepared me.)

if you're truly that novice then it's best to take a safety course. i think it should be required every few years, but that would require regulations. anywho, big difference between learning to shoot a particular weapon versus learning how to shoot in the first place

Just make sure the safety course is worth it vs. just ticking a box.   I never took one, but my buddy who was ex-military took one and felt like it was a complete waste of time.

That's kind of the point.  I know I know nothing.  I have some vague safety awareness but I'm happy to get proper training.  I would much prefer to not be a net negative.

I did that first as well.  Signed up at a range and we went through stuff before ever going out on the range.  I grew up shooting but it has been 25+ years since I last fired one.  The class was such a great reminder.
