It sounds like a completely fucked situation. The GM Nagy didn’t report to Joe C, he reported to Joe C’s successor Randall Stephenson. It sounds like Stephenson nudged Joe C out.

Nagy not reporting to Skeletor should end in disaster, and I’m here for it.

247 only has 2 of their 15 commits at 4 star. 1 of them is just barely a 4 star. The composite is a little nicer and had them with 8 of 15 as 4 stars, but they're damn near all borderline 3 star.

Guys, do not click on the spoiler below if you're worried about elevating your heart rate or laughing so hard that your head explodes. The thread I'm pasting has everything in it. It's amazing.

They're starting to really lean in to the "Nagy is playing chess, everyone else is playing checkers" storyline as a rationalization for how shitty recruiting is going. The original poster actually posted the OU 5 star history as a means of explaining that 5 stars are generally overrated. I laughed out loud. I sometimes forget how genuinely stupid the majority of the OU fanbase is. Anyway, this thread checked every box in the game of recruiting bullshit bingo:

Thought this might give perspective....I searched the databases and went back to 2002 (couldnt find anything that went back further that still listed the recruit stars...seems that has been lost in website evolution).

If any recruiting service had them listed as a 5 star, I put them on the list....let me know if I'm missing anyone....

Hope this gives a perspective of who panned out and didn't...and then let you realize there are many OU greats that not only excelled at OU but went to the NFL and became greats that were not 5 star recruits...

Additionally, as I scoured the recruiting classes, there were several years where we didn't have any 5 stars on our recruiting roster...

OU is either getting the wrong 5 stars, or not developing/controlling them. UGA, tOSU, Bama, even to a lesser extent than those 3, have hit big on 5 stars. OU missing a lot is a product of development and culture here. Some failed because OU failed them on the field, others because they failed to monitor and control them off the field. OU may have the worst hit rate % on 5 stars, and is a big reason why it has been almost 25 years since OU raised the natty.

Most of the 5 stars we recruited wouldn’t get by Nagy and his staff, as far as the type of kid they are looking for.

I probably should've put it in article form, but a few weeks ago I posted a quote from Nagy that said (and I'm heavily paraphrasing here) If OU has a guy rated as a 4 or 5 star but the recruiting sites don't, they're going to prioritize that prospect over one that recruiting sites are higher on. It's sort of that valuation vs evaulation thing. The goal is to get the most bang for your buck.

OUs 2000 team was filled with what would have been rated as mid level talent that played with heart, made each player to their left or right better and as a whole rose to the occasion....doubt we had a single 5 star on that team.

    Per Google and AI :

Star ratings for high school football recruits started gaining prominence around the early 2000s...

another search said it began in 2002... upshot being star rankings and the 2000 chip have no relationship... I think kids were basically "blue chips" or not back in the stone age of the 1900's... LOL. I do remember back then, anyone in the Texas top 100 was considered a very good prospect...

College football is where I’m focused so not too interested on who went on to become nfl greats. Teams loaded with four and five stars are winning nattys. Really hoping for a good year in 2025 so more of those can be pulled in. Just wish I had a billion so I could help out with NIL!

Until there is a salary cap put in place. CFB teams will operate like MLB. Small market teams have to maximize the dollar while LA & NY can just buy any player they want. Get used to it until a CBA, a salary cap is installed and there is a limit on NIL per player. Otherwise you have teams like TT with billionaire donors who pay these kids unlimited amounts.

All these guessperts are doing by ranking a player a 2* to a 5* is saying they think this player or that player has the 'potential' to that good. There's no guarantees in recruiting although somone like Adrian Peterson or Tommy Harris, who wasn't on the above list, are a pretty sure can't miss player if anyone saw them in high school. There's too many 3* players who have ended up playing like 5* players to count with some ending up All American's and Heisman Trophy winners, i.e. Sam Bradford and Baker Mayfield. And this is just at OU, not to mention that this happens at a lot of schools.

It has been objectively shown that more 5 and 4 stars correlates with championships. The hit rate for 5 stars to go to the nfl is significant and higher than 4 stars. More percentage of 4 stars go to the nfl than percentage of 3 stars. These statistics have been done and support the recruiting services rankings as legitimate in predicting on field success for both the players and the teams. It is only mental gymnastics when y’all make it so. OU needs to get better players. Same story as before.

Who's service are you using for comparison sake? 24/7s ranking has for the most part, differed from ESPN, on3, er al. Why? Because they try to correlate to how the kids will be in the NFL, vs college (iirc).
Now, who's ranking is Nagy using.

And learn we forget about composite .

NFL Advancement Rate from Top College Teams
For elite programs (top 10 in college football), approximately 35–40% of scholarship players make it onto an NFL roster at some point.

This rate is significantly higher than the national average for all Division I FBS players, which sits at about 1.6%.

Data from Recruiting and Draft Analysis
Among five-star recruits, the draft rate is about 58%—meaning more than half are selected in the NFL Draft.

Teams consistently in the top 10 (e.g., Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson) routinely see 35–45% of their scholarship players go on to the NFL, especially those who recruit at the highest level.

The best programs for player development (measured by actual draft rate) include Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, Ohio State, LSU, Florida, and Clemson, with the highest variance above the national average.

    Table: Estimated NFL Advancement Rates
Program Level Percentage Making NFL Roster
    Top 10 college teams 35–40%
    Five-star recruits 58% (drafted)
    All D-I FBS players 1.6%

That thread supports my theory- numeracy is hard for most people.

Here we go, from Sooner Scoop, an explanation for “why recruiting is going like it is…”

https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/2026-recruiting.7643212/

  Reveal hidden contents

quick synopsis; First, under BV leadership, OU has had 2 losing seasons in the past 3 years. OU got screwed with the SEC scheduling and BV made the wrong hire in Seth Littrell which led to the disaster of last season. Other colleges are using the program trajectory and BV job security as a way to negative recruit OU.

secondly, Oklahoma recruiting strategy up to the start of the year has been selling the rich history of the program, development on and off the field, winning, Christian values/SOUL, and yes we pay a fair sum based off market value.

Third, the 2026 class is extremely peculiar because typically college coaches are somewhat completely responsible for the entire life cycle of recruiting (from prospecting to signing and now retaining) and these relationships are formed over many years. With all the changes with NIL and revenue sharing and with the college game more resembling the NFL, Harroz, Joe C and Randall Stephenson decided to opt into NFL style college football program. Insert the GM. OU hired Nagy and co. Back in February to basically prospect, scout and assign a value to based off the position they play and need. BV and co. had already been forming relationships with the 2026 class since they stepped foot on campus 3+ years ago. Some recruits BV and co. had been recruiting for a long time and they had placed a high value on, aren’t as regarded as the GM office. Ex. Mason James. Basically BV and co. Built realationships with kids that Nagy and co. Saying they’re not worth the money to sign. Nagy is working with BV and staff on finding alternatives but as previously mentioned, the formation of relationships typically starts years previously.

in conclusion other teams are effectively negative recruiting Oklahoma because OU has had 2 losing seasons in the past 3 years and with BV being on the hot seat it’s working. This entire recruiting cycle has also been flipped on it head because Nagy and co. are taking a money ball approach and has stuck a fork into some highly ranked recruits that the staff spent years forming relationships with because they don’t see their game, bodies, or athleticism transferring to the college/NFL game. Ex. Mason James. Staff is scrambling to form relationships quickly with guys they never recruited before and with how early recruits are committing this year, don’t expect a lot.

They don’t like the world the way it is now. They want it to be like it used to be. They know they are at a disadvantage, are pissed at their program’s leaders for not navigating this better, and can’t believe the rest of college football can possibly be ok with a world where OU struggles to compete.

Got to thinking about when Riley left and lots of stuff makes more sense. Lots said he didn’t want to compete in SEC. Maybe he saw the financial issues keeping him from recruiting at a high level. Just a thought

What’s so funny about the “money ball” approach is that it’s what literally every school that’s not Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, Bama, Miami, etc. already does and has been doing for years. Credit to Nagy for thinking up the “what if we just recruited three stars but only ones that are are good” strategy.  Can’t wait to see how that turns out.

It’s fun at them, but this exactly what they should be doing. Keep their powder dry for the portal.

Fasusi recruitments are going to happen. His Mama thought Austin was the devil, and OU took advantage.

As Burton astutely pointed out, if Nagy was good he would be in a NFL front office. No one willing works for the Senior Bowl was 7 years.

I don’t k ow how significant this is, but Nagy’s Moneyball scout staff lists six scouts on their website. Texas’ site shows 11 scouts.

Probably pretty fuckin significant because he’d need a team of 6000 scouts to compete with our current roster building by identifying under recruited three stars.

Maybe they should see if they can buy some brisket from Lincoln Riley to hand out recruits. Sadly for them, that would be a bigger draw than Captain Firehose
