Also taking a look at what the offense turned in during those games this season.

I get it, people want to believe whatever change happens is going to be great.

Yet slamming a DC that turned it 4 straight seasons of top 15 in the nation defense, and 3 of them top 8, is stupid even for fans. Given how stupidly Chance Mock played QB it doesn't surprise me he's a moron.

Dude I am not slamming PK, but I can also be honest about his defense's short comings.  We were very good against the run yes.....outside of 2024 we were below average to bad against the pass every season he was here.  Yes some of that is a product of shutting down the run game, but other top 10 defenses are capable of being good against both.  Also, the entirety of PK's time here, we were horrible defending the middle of the field against the pass. We were gouged repeatedly between the hashes even in 2024.

IT on other potential staff moves

Spoiler

Quarterbacks — AJ Milwee

Inside Texas has heard zero discussion of Milwee’s job being in jeopardy. If anything, he may have increased his value with the insight he offered from the booth starting with the Mississippi State game.

For Milwee to move on, Sark would have to drop another major bomb—one that would likely entail adding a play-calling offensive coordinator.

We think he’s safe. As has long been chronicled, Milwee has a strong relationship with Arch Manning.

Running Backs — Jabbar Juluke

He’s been a fish to water in his first week at Texas. Sark wanted more fire and toughness. We didn’t know it at the time, but that was foreshadowing.

Wide Receivers — Chris Jackson

Inside Texas does not expect Jackson to return to Austin, and that appears to be mutual.

I have no clue who they would target. It was a weird process last time. I would bet Sark has a good idea of who he wants, given that needing a replacement has felt inevitable.

Tight Ends / Special Teams — Jeff Banks

Sundance to Sark’s Butch. He’s not going anywhere. Banks is probably Sark’s most trusted man in Austin.

Offensive Line — Kyle Flood

Sark and Flood are certainly close, but the product was poor in ways it’s tough not to hold him accountable for—especially if you’re replacing PK, who has been vastly, vastly superior to Flood.

I simply haven’t heard much discussion of late about Flood being replaced. Other than culture, Sark mentions the word continuity more than any other.

The way things are playing out, however, it kind of feels like The Godfather, and Flood is Carlo.

“Carlo’s Michael’s brother-in-law. Carlo’s probably safe.”
“Michael just became godfather to his child.”
“Look, now Michael’s giving him a plane ticket to Vegas. Yep, he’s giving him a pass.”

We know how that ended. (NO SPOILERS)

Edge — LaAllan Clark

My assumption is Clark will be the defensive ends coach, but I haven’t heard that as fact.

Defensive Tackles — Kenny Baker

Baker is viewed very fondly behind the scenes, and I think he’ll be retained. However, Muschamp is an alpha who will come to his own conclusions and make his own decisions.

At this time, I do believe Baker is safe.

Linebackers — Johnny Nansen

Nansen is definitely in the Sark club, but linebacker is the most likely position for Muschamp to coach.

I had one source reach out to say how cruel it was that PK got let go before Nansen, given PK’s value to the program over the years. People are definitely split on Nansen, and he and PK didn’t always work well together. Reminder: PK is known to be able to work with anyone.

My guess is Nansen won’t make it—but put an emphasis on guess.

Cornerbacks — Mark Orphey

See Kenny Baker. Similar situation, but maybe a bit more tenuous given Muschamp’s focus on defensive backs and coverages. Orphey spending a year as a defensive analyst under Nick Saban surely helps his case.

One person I was told to watch for, if Muschamp makes a move, is Corey Bell at Mississippi State. However, I think Orphey is safe, and I believe that’s the right call.

Safeties — Vacant

I’m hearing this morning that the price to get Blake Gideon from Georgia Tech is too steep. I’ve also heard that Travaris Robinson is TBD to join Muschamp in Austin.

“T-Rob” is sort of like Muschamp’s Jeff Banks—in that if Will’s riding a motorcycle, T-Rob is in the sidecar, goggles on, scarf blowing in the wind.

Gideon was the first choice, but T-Rob is probably the favorite. There could be other names out there as well.

Sadly, it appears that I order way more manhattans and martinis in public than either of you. I’ve ordered both from bartenders all over this country and they will ask for clarity or often just make a manhattan with bourbon. Most default a martini to vodka or ask which way as well. This really isn’t even a discussion. If you think I’m off on it, try ordering from different places than your frequent hangout.

I've spent more money on SPILT LIQUOR, in bars from one side of this world to the other, than you make.

That Nansen section is surprising. I thought he was Sark's boy and guaranteed safe.

As bad as their defense was this year, also a little surprising GT hasn't cut Gideon by now or asked him to find a soft landing spot like this one.

Not sure what to think about Chris Jackson.

If you can’t be excited by the Muschamp hire and all that that implies, wow. PK did really well, but he basically recused himself from having to be involved with talent evaluations and was regularly pining to get back to the west coast. Muschamp had agreed to take the DC role when Sarkisian was hired and helped handpick the staff. His wife stunned everyone and refused to agree to moving back to Austin. She loves Austin and returns several times a year to visit with friends and shop. She didn’t want to leave while the kids were in college. So Muschamp had to bow out. PK was a great back up, but Muschamp is who Sarkisian wanted from the jump.

Muschamp is hands on with talent evaluation, with all of the game planning, has deep knowledge of the Georgia nemesis, endless energy, and will never be a yes man. He will tell Sarkisian straight up when he thinks he’s fucking up. The guy used to eat Greg Davis alive, in front of Mack Brown.

Might be wishful thinking but I'm hopeful this move leads to Sark personally stepping away from the defense and focusing more on the offense. If he's going to continue being the OC, he can't keep spending his time and energy on so much other stuff. So maybe this move actually leads to better offense too.

Chance Mock is a special breed of stupid. I've said it for years. The evidence is there if you care to look.

The defense could see the bottom fall out similar to how the DB room fell out this season. All it takes is bad fits.

I dont think that will happen, but it's conceivable. Not likely, not even probable, but none of us back in August thought the DBs would be trash this season either. That wasn't likely or even probable at that time.

What I dont think is likely is he matches PK's defensive success here. Those top 6 defenses 3 years in a row is among the best in the history of the program. Muschamp has to hit home runs to be up there again in 2026. I hope he does it.

I guess some of you had higher expectations for the secondary than you should have. All things considered they weren’t that bad. And IMO only cost us one game in which Manny didn’t play and we got beat/punked by a WR we had no tape on.

Muschamp was instrumental in signing multiple high 4 star and 5 star defensive players after the bag game had become a useful tool for multiple other programs. Those guys signed and played at Texas for free. Yet there are people here knocking him as a recruiter and evaluator of talent.

Muschamp was critical for pushing Georgia over the top in their title runs with some of the best defenses in modern history and he was Saban’s defensive protege who Saban still counts among his close friends in the coaching world. Yet there are people here knocking his coaching acumen.

Saban knows great assistants obviously. He publicly predicted both Muschamp and Sarkisian would be great head coaches because like lots of all time greats, not even he knows exactly what it is that made him uniquely effective in the head coach role.

But it tells anyone who's paying attention that purely as coordinators, those two are elite.

I know the internet rumormongers  said that PK would look at USC, but I have to think that job might be race Nansen would love to win.  Also, Nansen worked with new Cal coach Lupoi at Washington (with Sark!).   I think he has great options if Muschamp wants his people in.

#101st pass defense in the country isn't bad???  Our secondary and PK's coverage calls almost cost us Vandy game, Arkansas was torching us both on ground and in air until their QB got hurt, Kentucky looked like they had Tom Brady back there,  we made Stetson at Georgia look like early season Ty Simpson.....4 of the last 5 games of the season we gave up over 30pts a game.

No matter which coach called it, our "defense" on Vandy's 4th and 19 Houdini escape from its own 2 is what told me we had to see massive changes on that side of the ball. It was among the least excusable plays in Longhorn football history. Stowers being wide open on that long TD at least could be explained away as poor communication on the back end.

Thats all you should have said,  but your position that a first year special teams coordinator was the huge difference in a defense where the head coach is probably the best defensive coach in college football is funny.

Sark also chose those guys. And Flood.

Not saying it'll be a disaster,  but it is high risk and high reward. There's risk hiring a DC who has been a DC 1 season in the last 15 years

Of course. There's always risk. I mean, look at how different it went for Harbaugh from Stanford to Michigan. I bet he would have one or two NC's if the weirdo could stay at a single job without becoming a pain in the ass. Instead, he just cannot accept that yes, even high level college jobs get tougher. He seemed baffled by that.

Anyway, you know how Manny _iaz seems to not suck except at Texas? That happens more than should happen.

We beat Vandy, who was mostly held in check until we suffered more injuries in the secondary, we beat Arky who had one of the top offenses and scored points on just about everyone, Kentucky scored 13 points, who gives a fuck what they did otherwise. It’s clear from Sark’s side, that he was involved in the defense…More than Sark wanted to be involved. He really envisions Muschamp running everything defensively, including calling a timeout if needed.

Yes we beat Vandy....they also scored 21 points on us in the last 10 minutes of the game and if they had recovered the onside kick would have won the game with a field goal.

Muschamp should can Nansen so that he can coach the LB's as well as having full control of the defense. If he gets his guy Travaris Robinson who follows him everywhere to coach the safeties that's a really good move. Muschamp, Clark, Baker, Orphey, Robinson is a damn good staff on defense

I think Nansen is a very solid coach but him botching that Riley Pettijohn recruitment during his OV was terrible. Plus, Muschamp has more ties into the south in terms of recruiting. Lastly, I think Muschamp will recommend to Sark that our guys have gotta get bigger in the weight room to match the level of physicality that he wants to bring to the defense
