I'm approaching this season much like I did Chris Beard year one. We had a competitive team most of the year, but the offense was like watching paint dry at times. But that wasn't the point. Beard wanted to win by winning the turnover battle, hitting a higher percentage of shots, and playing really tough half court defense. Year one was about creating that mentality, and then building on it in year two.

Same thing here, except Miller's identity is more about playing with tempo, hitting open looks, especially 3s, and playing good enough on the defensive end. He wouldn't say it like that, but that's my view of him compared to guys like Barnes and Beard.

I hope we make it to the tournament, but I don't need that as much as I need to see the team show improvement over the course of the year, and then Miller show he can upgrade the roster in different ways from year 1 to year 2.

Not saying we'll have an Elite Eight type team next year, but I hope we'll be competing to get to the 2nd weekend. Which is still ambitious.

I'm also hoping he can be effective at promoting the program, because we need that type of guy at Texas. Maybe we shouldn't, but we do.

Funny when it was announced Texas was moving from the Big 12 to the SEC, I thought we'd be downgrading conferences in basketball. Nope. It's going to be as much of a grind as the Big 12 used to be. More high scoring offenses, though.

One thing I get tired of, is hearing coaches say they're going to run it more, but they don't. That's not going to be a concern with Miller. He's going to want to play more uptempo than most coaches out there.

Texas vs. Duke: Injury notes ahead of Tuesday's season opener (Sunday 2:38pm CT) - Gerry

I am excited for Miller's tenure here and have a lot of optimism. However, lay the points in this one. It looks like it's going to the typical blowout by Duke. Duke -7.5 seems too small given it's the first game of the season and Texas isn't full strength.

Texas vs. Duke: Injury notes ahead of Tuesday's season opener

The Texas Longhorns played preseason scrimmages against SMU and TCU without big men Matas Vokietaitas and Lassina Traore.

Vokietaitas has been nursing an ankle sprain suffered early in fall practice. In the case of Traore, he has been working back to full strength following missing last season with an ACL injury. He has been working through some soreness, and limited.

Headed into last week, it was considered 50-50 either would be able to go in the season opener.

OTF can report that odds are increasing that one, if not both, will be available for the contest against Duke in Charlotte, N.C. Both have increased their practice time preparation the last couple of days. Texas practiced Saturday at 11 am, instead of taking in the Texas-Vanderbilt football game.

Texas and Duke tipoff at 7:45 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by ESPN.

Texas 2025-26 roster...
Tramon Mark, CG, 6-6, Gr. (10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists)

Dailyn Swain, F/G, 6-8, junior (11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals at Xavier)
Camden Heide, F, 6-7, junior (4.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 39.2% from three at Purdue)

I’m still angry we agreed to this game in what is essentially a home game for Duke. I don’t know what Miller was thinking.

Oh well, get some experience I gue

I feel like we don’t accept if it’s not a Dick Vitale thing. Might be a bad look to be like “fuck that guy, hard pass”

F it. Guess we'll just have to beat them.

Look, we have plenty of talent on this team to win.  Jordan Poole is our 7th or 8th best player and he has gone off for 40+ before.  If the shots are falling, we have a chance.

This is also not a team that is going to get bullied.  Quite the opposite.  We very well may trot out a starting lineup of:    6'4 Wilcher, 6'5 Mark, 6'8 Swain, 6'10 Traore, 7'0 Vokietaitis.  If it was a Chris Beard or Rick Barnes team, we would dirty it up and turn it into a slug fest.  Looking forward to seeing what Miller does with this group.

I would have some serious questions if Miller can't make the tourney with this team. RT flirted with the SS year 1 and almost made the tourney last season. Not sure why Texas should take a step back in the NIL era after upgrading at HC.

That's assuming there aren't a bunch of devastating injuries or what have you.
