Transfer Cycle 2025-2026 - Please Make It Stop

How can you leave out JMU. They put up 34 on Oregon...like it's just no big deal to score on the Ducks.

If Tech is a Jones now, JMU is 2010s Bama.

I think Indiana is proof that it's not all about the money. That's cynical simplism. Many elements come into play. It's hard to watch Indiana and not want to go there even if you do make a little less money.

I don't know why people think that Indiana is getting a discount on players. That's a massive university with a huge donor base. I'm obviously not privy to their contracts, but my assumption is they're spending about as much as anyone. Other top programs were after Mendoza and some others that they landed last cycle.

Managing the portal is a combination of herding cats and unlocking a door in the dark where you have to feel around to find the lock, hope you have the right key, all while not being 100% sure you’re even trying to open the right door.

Information works differently in these situations. It’s mostly smoke and mirrors and the ground is always moving beneath you. It’s a fools errand to try to report information that seems accurate, and it’s even dumber to try to follow moment by moment with the expectation that reading something is even current by the time it reaches you.

Bobby and Gerry have to participate because their business model requires it. They’re at the mercy of coaches, staff, parents, players, and agents that are all jostling for position and willing to put false information out if it benefits them in the negotiation. The best they can do is constantly hedge, but that’s not what their paying subscribers are looking for. I got to see the inside of a high profile WR negotiation a few years ago. It was such a shitshow I didn’t have much interest in the process after that. A donor personally managed the negotiation with the agent, made what he thought was a winning offer, was told by the agent the deal was done and to send the paperwork, and 20 minutes later the player had signed with another school for one notch above our offer. I’m sure that happens all the time, so there’s not much use in “confidence levels” and “gut feelings”.

I think this was a joke, but just to make this clear to every single person and to ensure they spread this to their Texas Tech friends/Cody Campbell dick slurpers....Texas has spent more in NIL than Tech has in every single year since NILs existence. Cody Campbell is just loud about it, and Tech is such a shit ass school that the mainstream populace can't believe anyone would go there for any reason outside of vastly overpaying to get them to that shit ass school in butt fuck egypt

Oh, and they still haven't scored a single point in the playoffs

At this point you would think other schools would start using their loudmouth approach against them.

"Man those guys are well known to be offering everyone huge NIL packages with that billionaire buying out Times Square and that's all they're offering you? Must not want you very badly."

Mark Cuban is an alumnus, so they may have more than people think. They are also dealing with a bit of advantage in strictly the portal. They do not have the big names in recruiting that they have to pay to retain, like the blue bloods. That is also a reason you see Tech being one of the largest spenders in the portal. Texas has guys like Simmons, Goosby, and Arch they have to shore up first.

I don't think I've heard a more accurately succinct way of explaining the draw of the pay sites, and really, the following of recruiting in general.

One positive outcome of the portal/free agency is the 9.95ers are showing themselves as nothing more than the charlatans they all are and maybe people will stop burning their money.

Nah, the same rubes that have been paying these jock-sniffing clowns since the 90's will keep that autopay going til they kick the bucket.

Isn’t Mark Cuban financing them?

He is and Will Weaver. They've also done some NFL stuff like sold their naming rights to fund revshare.

They also are chasing second tier guys and relying on luck and coaching to create talent.

Honest question, how many "top-tier" have actually committed anywhere yet? Is Omarion Miller considered top-tier?

If Omarion Miller is considered "top tier" in the portal, then the portal is simply chock full of bread. The guy is a solid player but not a #1 WR.

I thought about this after I posted what you respond to. I'm assuming a lot of stuff and, like you, I don't know what they're spending and what they can spend. If they've built the team with money, my point was weak.

As a bit of idle speculation, I will point out that Cignetti has been an impressively winning coach at levels where money didn't matter so much. Or maybe I'm wrong about that, too.

didn't say he wasn't a friend of the program at all. but he also got caught with his pants down twice this year. preseason bullshit was next level, "all in" nonsense was similar. so y'all have fun with it. folks defending 995ers - even those that have some program access - can and should put me on ignore.

I cannot speak for everyone here on who to put on ignore but my rule is I only put obvious trolls on ignore. If you have a really shitty take I actually want to read it and debate it. You are upset because Bobby told you Texas was going to be meaningfully better than 10-3? I actually listened to most offseason podcasts from OTF and IT and I do not recall anyone predicting undefeated or anyone better than 10-2. So they missed it by one loss, effectively. What is your specific complaint about what was told to you about the offseason? I actually thought they did a reasonable job of discussing our relative strengths and weaknesses. It wasn’t just non stop sunshine pumping.

As for the transfer portal how can you make any conclusions until the process is over?

Where the staff mismanages situations, NIL expectations, then has to scramble to pull it all back together? Honestly yeah it feels a lot like that.

This thread is teetering on chaos and reality. We’re at a point where surly civil war is about to begin if and when we get good news or bad news.

I would sure hope so. A little odd with Mascoe and Allegrio on campus today.

Hopefully Sark is beelining for Ann Arbor to drag those two OLs out of there.

Only guy who is supposed to be on campus today is the Miami DT.

Your take on Bobby is so fucking clueless it’s almost reads like parody. Bobby is a friend of the Texas program and if you ever met him and talked Texas football with him you would not have this opinion. And calling him the worst in a market that includes Ketchum and Nahlin is the hawtest takes of all time.

Bobby can be a bit defensive at times, which is honestly really funny to me.

I truly think this is the last time the portal will be like this from a coverage perspective. It's too much of a shitshow and it's bad for everyone involved including the players. I think that players getting paid (not big NIL, but some) for their announce for certain teams with certain outlets as a "scoop fee" or something is coming. I know I've tossed around the idea of hogging every single NFL and portal announcement in and out of Texas this way instead of doing Burnt Ends. It wouldn't take all that much to buy the exclusive and become the outlet for that exclusive. This is how it works in the NFL and every other major sport where there's dealings with major media outlets. I almost offered this to Jack Endries to get the exclusive on it, but because of the contract non performance and a bunch of other shit I didn't really feel like it was the right time to push for it.

I also wouldn't put it beyond the NCAA to have a portal "period" where you can enter and do recruiting stuff etc. and then have a true "signing day" similar to how it is with recruiting, that would actually consolidate a lot of this insanity as well, including the games that the players are playing on deciding whether or not to enter and fucking staffs around asking for pay bumps with no intention of entering.

It's a fucking mess and something is going to change next season - I watched this Rich Eisen segment this morning highlighting Dan Lannings' take on the whole thing and I agree - National Championship should be January 1 and all this bullshit dead time between end of season and bowl period is pointless. The only shitty thing is that I think it makes it hard to have a NY6 that way still with meaningful games and/or the NCG is the only thing post Jan 2 and it actually happens saturday after 7+ days of rest.

I'm leaning this way, tbh.

Looking back at last year's portal: Eric Singleton and David Bailey worked out, then bread. Mendoza obviously worked out too but he wasn't considered a top guy.

What's worse, they fully lean into everything you just said and proudly acknowledge the fact that they have to overpay by 15-20% to get guys there. It's like hazard pay for jobs in dangerous locations. At least they are self aware, unlike our aggy brethren, but to take out a billboard in times square and promote on twitter how much money you just spent on a mid level quarterback is some serious little man syndrome.

I think you're spot on that Cignetti has been the best at IDing talent, developing talent and in game coaching. So in that sense, he's probably getting something of a discount by avoiding some of the bidding wars with blue bloods and potentially some sort of QB discount given he's been so unbelievable with development at that position (although I'd expect that to be pretty marginal). To @Codaxx point, he's also not negotiating from the starting salary of five stars for retention. I'd guess guys like Ponds, the LBs and DL from 2024 were not cheap to retain. I guess my overall point is that they're signing the type of portal players you'd expect to compete for championships, so the logical conclusion is they have about as much money as anyone.

he was saban's recruiting coordinator as saban was on the rise. cignetti gets a massive discount on portal players and NIL because he can identify the great ones no one else quite sees yet. He's very much in the catbird seat going forward.

Bobby actually was the one guy who predicted 9-3 including a loss to Florida. Gerry and the others all predicted 10-2.
