Offensive line
Starter expected to return: RT Brandon Baker
Incoming: OT John Turntine III, OG Kaden Scherer, C/G Nicolas Robertson
Still monitoring: OT Trevor Goosby (NFL), C Connor Robertson and others
Gone portaling: LG Connor Stroh

OTF: Three or four will be the number, depending on the NFL decision by Trevor Goosby. Right now, it's three interior players out of the portal.

Gotta keep Goosby around to protect Arch's blindside

If Goosby gets a first round grade there is no amount of money we could pay that would keep him from going. I could see him being a mid to late first round guy. There are 3 or 4 other very good tackles in this draft, but his measurables will blow him up at the combine.

Interesting that Gerry is confident about 3 IOL. I really hope that's true but honestly I'm not getting my hopes up for more than 2 and even 1 seems possible. Unless we fire Flood and the new guy wants to remake the room.

Every $9.95er and in the know poster in here has been consistent in saying they will go after multiple OL and remake the line and you find that interesting?

The certainty about the number 3 is what I find interesting. For Sark and Flood to go from "we have never taken a portal OL in our time at Texas" to "we will get 3 starters from the portal this year" is a big leap that I won't believe until I see.

Goosby will get a first round grade by at least one of the brain dead twitter scouts that annually poison the wells with false expectations. If his brother turning down 2x money to come to Austin is an indicator of the family’s thought process I have some confidence here.

Maybe?  What measurables are we talking here?

The whole "Goosby to the NFL" is one parts legitimate conversation, and two parts Burton/Gerry running with an ESPN report from a "draft expert" whose experience is making listicles for content farm Bleacher Report.

Kelvin Banks was a Day 1 starter here, and was the 3rd Tackle/OL taken last year. And Goosby is supposedly almost that good? Serious question.

Edit: I see Kiper (I know, but at least it’s a data point) has him as 5th OT in what appears to be (according to his board, and yes, I know…) a weak OL class.

Seems like a situation where a 2nd rounder can leverage his way into the next year 1st round.

Yes. I’m a shameless wishcaster

Seems like most draftniks have him as a round 2/3 guy. Also seems like most 9.95ers expect him to likely come back. But who knows

Dane Brugler’s most recent top 50 big board was on November 11 and doesn’t have Goosby (or any Texas player). I’m the intro he mentions that it’s a relatively weak OL class.

Goosby put up quite a bit of bad tape during the season. He's probably being counseled to return to school and develop 1 more season. I don't see how he's anything higher than 3rd round at this point.

Cam Williams had great measurables and fell to the late rounds.

FCB with a few portal/roster notes

-Texas wants Connor Robertson to return, but Robertson knows they are about to load up in the portal at OL so he is unsure what he wants to do for his final year.

-"It might be unlikely for both Kobe Black and Warren Roberson to return. I'm hearing Black, who is coming off of a strong performance against Texas A&M, which included an interception, is leaning toward returning as long as his exit meeting with coaches goes well."

-Wisner is leaning towards returning

-Gibson did not like Chad Scott. One of the reasons he left the program midseason.

I do not remember writing this.

But that's pretty common.

Sark needs someone else to do the OL evaluating and just have Flood coach who he gives him.

I don't know if Saban let Flood evaluate his own OL classes. The 2019 and 2020 lines he coached there he didn't evaluate. Did Alabama's OL production fall off a bit in the 2021/2022/2023 time frame? Those would have been partly made up of his 2019 and 2020 line recruits.

He's been far too shitty here in evaluation for too many years to be allowed to continue.

Cross posting from the bowl game thread:

Nahlin reporting Hill, Trey Moore, Guilbeau, Burke, Muhammad and Taaffe are all opting out of the bowl game.

Everyone else is currently practicing and expected to play, including Kanu, McDonald, Endries and Goosby. Said that doesn’t mean they are locks to return but it is a positive data point. DeAndre Moore is nursing a minor injury but is also expected to play.

It's worth reiterating that Guilbeau is getting some godawful advice if he thinks he's got enough on film already for the NFL.

Does anyone in the know have the story on whether losing Williams to the portal is a concern by the staff? On one hand, I would think it is given the minutes he’s played, his recruiting rank and the depth chart, but on the other hand the safety performance while he was on the field was definitely worse at times.

Then again, if you can't keep up with your man, every play you're not out there proving it is arguably a positive data point.

This is our concern, dude. If this article is true (and I'm skeptical), then there's virtually no way he doesn't get at least a mid first round grade, right? A 4.6 to 4.7 forty time at that size is alien shit. Still, though, he's definitely a freakish athlete but I'm having a hard time believe those numbers

Taaffe is the one that surprises me, out of anyone wanting to play every down he could I thought he would.

He’s no different than any other NFL prospect. He especially cannot risk injury to miss the combine where he has to impesss and run the fastest 40 of his life.

That's just the way it is now, no one who is going to the draft is going to play in non-playoff bowl games.  Any injury would hurt their training for the combine.

IT posted some more portal/NFL notes:

-Nate Kibble and Kobe Black are expected to stay

-Colton Vasek was leaning towards leaving but now they consider it a toss up

-Still believe Kanu, Endries and McDonald are likely to return

- No more departures expected in the safety room aside from Derek Williams

-"On Wardell Mack, Texas thinks he’ll stay. I stand by my reporting by saying that hasn’t been the plan, but things could change with him having a clearly defined role and a change in leadership in that room."

Hm that feedback is higher than I thought, that could be tricky

They have got to be playing up the whole "Well that's what they told Cam Williams too and look what happened" angle of things.

I don't think Williams was ever getting feedback this high. He also had the knee injury during the draft process and seemed more raw than Goosby.

Isn't this supposed to be a weaker OT draft class?

Well shit I hope the staff isn't pointing those things out to him.

I love Bobby but I fully expect anything he reports on the safeties to completely gloss over any issues with Akina.

He was so incensed at the temerity of a question about Akina on the podcast yesterday that I'm convinced he owes Akina money.

Akina was such a lazy hire, terrible

Probably weren't alot of strong candidates jumping at the chance to come work for a coach that was MIA at the time

Bobby and Akina have history. It's not surprising.  Plus the stories that Akina was Bobby's best source/Bobby was Akina's mouth piece back during the Mack years....it makes sense.

I hope they have their eyes on a few potential portal LTs in case Goosby does go pro. Of all the dumb things to do, leaving Arch's blindside exposed would be near the top of the list. Better have some options on speed dial in case they're needed.
