Internet/ phone scammers
Callers cold-called victims and used social engineering to convince them their accounts were the subject of cyberattacks and the enterprise callers were attempting to help secure their accounts. Money launderers received the stolen crypto currency and turned it into fiat U.S. currency in the form of bulk cash or wire transfers.

Torn between hating a thief and not feeling empathy for ripped-off crypto clowns.

Once they bought crypto, their money had already been stolen.

The indictment alleges that in one instance on Aug. 18, 2024, Malone Lam and contacted a victim in D.C. and, through the communications with that victim, fraudulently obtained over 4,100 Bitcoin -- worth over $230 million at the time. In another instance in July 2024, Malone Lam and others are accused of stealing over $14 million in cryptocurrency from an additional victim.

The indictment alleges that members of the enterprise also committed home break-ins. As alleged in the Indictment, Marlon Ferro traveled to New Mexico in July 2024 and broke into a victim’s home to steal their hardware virtual currency wallet while Lam monitored the victim’s location by logging into his iCloud account.

It wouldn't surprise me if many of "victims" may have also obtained their wealth thru shady means as well. Who is sitting on $230M and agrees to somehow hand that over to someone you don't know? My guess is that it's someone who doesn't want the govt or legit custodians to know who they are.

Is this a plot to a Jason Statham movie?  Are there Bees?

Supposedly some of the dudes that got taken went after the perp's family.  I live somewhat close to this Kunal fella.

If they made a dozen beekeeper movies where he just brutally murders new scammers in each one I'd see every single one of those in theaters.

That's kind of every Jason Statham movie though.

But Beekeeper is an amusing experience. Perfect airplane movie.

Had an old neighbor a few years ago almost get taken. Don’t know if it was a phone call or email or text that initiated it, but somehow they told her that they were from Microsoft and during a “routine check” of her computer they found kiddie porn or some other vile thing. But they could remove it right away and not have to contact authorities, if she would just let them into her system. Which she did.

she had already gone the distance and was telling my wife about the ordeal when my wife told her it was probably a scam and to deactivate/cancel everything immediately.

wasn’t crypto related for them, but I can imagine if a scammer stumbles upon or targets people with crypto holdings they’re more than happy to transfer them.

I got a very nefarious email saying they would release the content of the porn I was viewing if I didn’t pay their ransom.   I sent them a video of me yanking it.

What the heck was on her computer that the idea of the authorities being alerted was so bad that she let a stranger remotely access her machine?

Whatever they told her they found buried on it they was probably put there by malware at some point for reasons.

Pretty irrelevant.  She thought it was something someone else had done

I’ve seen that video. You weren’t fooling anyone by tattooing a six inch ruler on your 3.5 inch penis
