Caserio needs to be fired. Year 3 with rookie contract Stroud and the OL has gotten worse. Ryans needs to be held accountable for two horrible OC hires.

Demeco deserves heat for hiring ANOTHER 1st time play caller. I wanted Chip Kelly. He also owns the undisciplined, stupid penalties this team seems to always get at the worst possible times. Caserio will be fired before Demeco IMO, still Demeco’s seat should be feeling the burn.

Kelly would have been a home run hire considering his NFL head coaching experience and their previous relationship as DeMeco played for Kelly in Philadelphia.

Shouldn’t be though

They played tough today just didn’t spy the QB enough and got out of passing lanes

Offense needs to get a legit backup for Chubb. Keeping stupid Mixon was a big mistake.

Yeah I hope he goes somewhere with an OL so he doesn’t look like shit. He’s still got like half a second to pass with 7 people blocking.

Yep he’s a little washed up but at least Houston would have a run game

Chubb's TD was utter lack of awareness of the score and game clock and that goes to coaching.

He absolutely should have gone down either outside the 10 yd line or at the goal line. Make them use all their timeouts goddamnit. I was happy for the 6 but knew that score was not smart with so much time on the clock, the two minute warning, and three opponent timeouts left.

Demeco. He deserves to get the heat for going with 1st time play caller AGAIN instead of hiring a sure thing like Chip Kelly who was readily available to join our staff.

Are you regarded? TB had the 2 minute warning and 3 timeouts. You would rather have a 2 point lead with 1:40 and TB only needing a FG to win? Rather than 41% of the time they need a TD to tie and 59% of the time they need a TD to win?

We know you are upset but Tampa had 3 timeouts and Texans had struggled to get a yard. Now go back look at the score and pencil in a field goal as a result of what you propose and then tell us if going down actually would make sense.

What I wanted was a better 2-point conversion call than that dumbass RB not understanding blitz pickup and the OC not understanding Tampa was coming with an all out blitz again.

That's precisely the point. Make them use all of their timeouts!! You and I both knew that they were going to drive down the field but if you give them a full clip of timeouts with two minutes left in the game needing a TD to win, they're gonna do that. I said that in real time at home when Chubb scored. Yeah I cheered because it's a TD, but I also knew within one second of that reaction that he fucked up. He absolutely should have gone down, either before the ten yard line to give us a shot at multiple first downs and a chip shot FG to win it, or we run three plays and make them use all their timeouts and either punch it in for a TD or kick the FG. Either way, Chubb's run was great but a better coached team has him doing what KC or Detroit would do and that is a knock on DeMeco imo. That was a golden opportunity to run clock and win the game.

Watch that play again. The RB picked up the right guy. The LG Tomlinson is the one that fucked it. I know Aikman blamed it on the RB, but I think maybe he’s had too many concussions.

You realize that you can still score a TD and that same logic applies, but the smarter play would be to go down close to the goal line in order to run clock and score a TD? The issue is the clock and they should have used it to their full advantage.

There is zero question that was stupid clock management. How's this even in doubt?

Despite the Houston defense playing their tails off, Chubb needs to down inside the 5 instead of scoring the TD. Force the Bucs to use two timeouts and burn the 2 minute warning. Then, if you can't punch it in, you let Imi, who is damn near automatic, hit the chip shot for the lead. Yes there's a 1% chance he misses the chip shot, but you have your timeouts. Baker gets the ball with one timeout and 20 seconds left.

Texans Lose in Fashion That is Becoming All Too Familiar in DeMeco Ryans Era

The Houston Texans are 0-2 after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-19.

Here are 11 observations from the Monday Night Football loss.

  1. Hope dissipated quickly after the Houston Texans scored early. They proceeded to fail repeatedly to be consistent on offense. Along the lines of last year, at some point, everyone was to blame for the offense. Then, after not allowing points for nearly 40 minutes, the defense allowed a touchdown as the backup running back bowled over defenders for the deciding score. The Texans once again helped their opponent beat them and lacked the ability to overcome their own miscues and mistakes.

  2. C.J. Stroud was nowhere good enough against the Buccaneers. He missed Nico Collins in the end zone twice. One of those throws was on fourth down, and Stroud threw it out of bounds. DeMeco Ryans specifically noted the outcome of that play after the game. You have to give one of your best players a chance. Stroud often panics in the quest for self-preservation. The offensive line stinks, yes, but what Stroud is in control of also isn’t good right now. Baker Mayfield played this game with a patchwork offensive line and down a steady wideout and still did enough to will his team to victory. Stroud, currently, isn’t an elevator. He needs help as much as he needs to help his teammates.

  3. Stroud’s mentality at the podium was as dour and sour as it has ever been. He offered curt answers initially before noting multiple ways the team has to make more plays. He noted the youth of the offense and lack of time playing together, but said no excuses, they “aren’t getting it done” as an offense. He said the pressures on third down and the doubling of Nico Collins helped the Buccaneers keep them from getting things rolling. He did say the team needs to stay together while regaining confidence. The confidence of 2023 Stroud seems to be long gone.

  4. The offensive line is atrocious. Nick Caserio’s quest to reshape the blocking has been a resounding failure through two games. The light at the end of the tunnel is not hope, it’s a train. There is no pathway to improving the overall talent in-season. He cheaped out on the investments, and it’s been miserable to watch for almost all eight quarters. Moments of protection are often marred shortly thereafter by a total lack and inability to give the quarterback a chance. It’s affected Stroud to the point where he isn’t as confident as he previously was in the pocket.

  5. DeMeco Ryans said there were communication issues with the line that led to some of the pressures. How is communication still an issue for the line? It could be yet another offensive line combination. It could be a lack of overall talent. It could be the offensive line coach. It could be the offensive coordinator. It could be the whole offense. But whoever is to blame, they have to do better. Ryans also said the blitzes were too successful against the Texans. That’s an issue because they’ve shown no ability to withstand constant pressure.

  6. Dare Ogunbowale can’t be trusted. I know he’s a captain and has been trusted, but they can’t put him on the field to protect Stroud anymore. He got absolutely bulldozed on a play he is specifically there to prevent from occurring. He has been on the field too often when it appeared that the running back failed to help block the correct person. Play Woody Marks; at least there is potential he can learn from his mistakes.

  7. Laken Tomlinson is every bit as bad as he has been for two seasons. He was a frequent target of the ire of Jets and Seahawks fans, and it’s clear why. He allowed the first sack, which torpedoed a promising drive before halftime. He provided light resistance to another mauling of Stroud. He got no push frequently. He looked like Shaq Mason a few times, wandering around looking for someone to block as defenders chased Stroud. Bargain shopping failed Nick Caserio here. There is no worthwhile backup unless Juice Scruggs has been marinating and improving from the bench.

  8. No defense this celebrated should have been this bad at slowing down the opponent’s rushing attack. Bucky Irving was pinballing off tacklers almost all night. The Texans bottled him up on a couple of drives, but it wasn’t enough. When the Buccaneers needed him, they could rely on him. His backup, Rachaad White, was also successful. The mismatched offensive line from Tampa Bay was firing them off the ball.

  9. The defensive tackles got worked.Sheldon Rankins had some nice moments, but the tackles mostly played terribly. Foley Fatukasi played one of the worst games I have seen a defensive tackle play for the Texans. Tim Settle Jr. was missing in action, but not nearly as much as Mario Edwards Jr., who didn’t appear in the box score. Tommy Togiai must be active next week to give them a chance.

  10. The defensive ends almost saved the Texans. They did bail out the team a few times with key sacks. Will Anderson Jr. pressured Mayfield plenty, but he didn’t feel as complete as he usually does, especially helping with the run game. Danielle Hunter was quite good. It felt like Anderson, Hunter, their backups, and even the linebackers got swallowed up or trapped by the rushing attack. Their aggressiveness worked against them.

  11. This game felt familiar in all the wrong ways. The defense, again asked to be nearly perfect, didn’t hold up. The offense, asked for just a little more, failed to deliver. The general manager failed the offense. The offense is failing the quarterback. The quarterback is failing the offense. All of it is at the feet of a first-year coordinator, and mostly the staff who were a part of the offensive mishaps from last season. The routes to get better seem limited, but Ryans, Nick Caley, and company better start to explore them, or a promising season can get derailed quickly.

Additional Observations

  • Nick Caley’s three plays from the one-yard line stunk. The run play from shotgun allowed Vita Vea to eliminate the rush. Two shotgun passes were missed by Stroud. I didn’t like any of the play calls. It was obvious to go for it there and try to then get a punt from the Buccaneers.

  • Jalen Pitre does little well right now. He doesn’t blitz well. He can’t cover. It was a mind-boggling extension in the offseason.

  • Jaylin Noel is dynamic with the ball in his hands. I wish he could get the ball on offense.

  • Excellent job getting a blocked punt at a key point in the game. Thankfully, the Texans were already in field goal range because the offense certainly seemed unlikely to get them there on their own.

  • The throws early to the running backs worked; then, after one play went for no gain, it was abandoned.

  • Harrison Bryant is very much not Cade Stover.

  • C.J. Stroud’s legs are quite useful, and he had a couple of good scrambles.

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars on the road are next for the Texans.

They didn't need to punch it in to win. They needed to run 3 more plays and then send out an automatic kicker for a chip shot to take the lead with barely 20 seconds left after the Bucs used up 2 timeouts.

Another way to look at it: once the Texans were in comfortable Kaimi range, the best thing that could have happened for the Bucs (short of a fumble) was a quick Houston score so Baker had maximum time with the ball. And that's exactly what they got. Given our complete inability to run all game, I wouldn't be surprised if their secondary let Chubb score once he burst through the first level.

The score is less important than the clock management and making them use their timeouts. Kaimi is a lock to make the chip shot FG there.

Yeah, he should have gone down after the 1st down and not at the 1, because if you make them waste their TOs and get a 1st down. They don't ever get the ball back. But I don't expect smart situational football from a DeMeco coached team. I love the guy, but he's not a good football IQ coach, especially considering his teams continued lack of discipline 3 years into the job.

-Poor football IQ

-Horrible offensive hires

Chubb should have gone down at the one, and we kick a field goal and win.  Or we win by kicking an earlier field goal, instead of getting stuffed at the goal line. Or maybe if the fucking offensive line can get a 1 yard push on runs rather than a 1 yard retreat we win.  Don't make so many take big yards off the board, or sustain drives like on the last one with penalties we win.

OL is simply not getting the job done.  As the OL goes, so goes the offensive performance.  If you cannot run the ball you cannot win.  And if there is a way to run the ball without good OL play, PLEASE let me know what are the plays that you can call over and over to mask that weakness.  If there is some OC/play caller that has a solution for weak ass OL play out there, they could instantly demand head coach money and get it.  Because my friends there is no play calling that can eliminate the overall disaster of poor line play.

I think Chubb was so juiced up about scoring a TD after being hurt for the past 2 years he was never going to slide down. Yes that’s the smart move, but decentish chance the Chubb’s last season in the league.

I’m seeing a lot of Texans collapsed headlines. They gave the ball back to fuck face with 3 minutes left. I believe he leads the NFL in game winning drives since 2018. What did people expect to happen? He’s likely marching down the field against the Eagles too. It’s an offense first league.

It sucks being 0-2, but it’s the peril of having success and playing a tough schedule.

Why does Ryans have such loyalty to Dare?

Whiffed on a pass block that ended in a sack

Stroud will be the first to admit he's fallen off since that rookie season, but he can still carve up defenses given time. It's absolutely unforgivable how bad his protection continues to be, especially in a city that should have learned the hard way how not to ruin a QB forever after the David Carr saga.

How are you arriving at :20 left? Chubb scored with 2:10 on the clock. 1st and goal would have been before the 2min warning. So, in theory a FG sequence would look like this:

1st and goal - 2:05

Two minute warning

2nd and goal - 1:53 (TO Tampa)

3rd and goal - 1:46 (TO Tampa)

4th and goal - 1:40 FG

Assuming the average play takes around 7 seconds, @Vermin was spot on. Tampa would have had the ball with about 1:40 left and 1 timeout.

If he’d gone down short of the EZ they’d have started the play clock once the ball was set and the Texans wouldn’t have had to run a play before the two minute warning…
