I figured it out.

Sark is saving Caldwell for OU

Sark has intentionally kept the playbook vanilla until we play Sam Houston State.

I think stacking the box would be a major mistake. OSU went mostly light boxes and dared Texas to bet them running the football. If UTEP didnt feel the need to stack the box, why would anyone else? The only thing Arch has done at a reasonable level is run the ball and throw deep. No need to open yourself up to explosive plays. I would say the same for blitzing. Why give Arch easy reads or open yourself up for him to scramble, while your DBs have their backs turned in man coverage.

PK would destroy this offense. Just take away explosives and force them to execute 8-10 play scoring drives. You can always adjust if out of the blue the offense finds a running game or a consistent short passing game.

Maybe that is why they look so unpracticed. Our defense blows everything up, so they never get a chance to really practice.

Vanilla? We ran about every goddamn run concept in existence last weekend. Counter, read, read counter, outside zone, inside zone, QB Power, etc. We sucked at most of it too.

Was watching the game with my dad and recall us picking up a 4th down running play with some misdirection and saying “I bet Sark wasn’t planning on busting that out against UTEP.”

I think Sark has been doing a delicate dance between going vanilla, holding guys out, and trying to do only basic shit while avoiding catastrophe and he’s really walking the edge thus far this season.

I don’t think he’s doing a great job because it looks like shit. Not sure how much to be down on him for it because no one could’ve predicted Arch would suck this badly.

I think this is a lesson in making sure a QB earns the role of QB1 in a true competition.  The process itself requires mental toughness which would filter out the weak ones.  Don't want to see a promised role for QB1 again.

I have no doubt Arch looks good in practice. This is some mental shit. Most of his bad throws seem to be a factor of him not trusting his reads and hesitating. Then he's a step behind and rushes the throw with shit mechanics. He moves well in the pocket and is getting time to make plays. Just has to trust his read and let it fly on the correct timing.

The run game was winning the game...and the Texas passing game lost it, along with Sark. I've seen slightly differing stats, but the number are roughly this, teams who outrush their opponents win 70% - 80% of the time. Teams that make the CFB playoff win 96% of their games when outrushing their opponents.

Texas more than doubled the rushing total of Ohio State.

It takes a magical stew of QB fuckups and coaching malpractice to find a way to lose under those circumstances.

The fact is the run game scored 0 pts. I watched CSU run for 118 yards vs Texas. People worried about the run defense last year, despite it being a 52-0 game. UTSA rushed for 128 in a 56-7 game. The worries persisted. Its like people have not watched the Texas defense. They are going to run light boxes and may give up some rush yardage, but you are not going to get explosives. They are going to focus on taking away the passing game. It was the same with OSU. If that run game was indictive of the Texas running game, do you really think Texas would struggle to run consistently vs UTEP and SJSU? For the run game to be effective you need to convert critical in situations, avoid negative plays, and usually hit explosives. IF you are not, it is no different than watching a QB rack up yards throwing underneath and failing in the redzone.

Wednesday: Bobby

A lot of sunshine pumping regarding a glorified scrimmage this Saturday. SHSU is terrible. We'll basically learn nothing from this game. However, if the OL doesn't step on their own dicks, repeatedly, and Arch can complete a basic pass, that would be nice to see.

Some notes from behind the scenes…

While most of Longhorn Nation is concerned with quarterback play and the offense, the mood inside DKR is decidedly different.

The Longhorn staff remains upbeat about the season ahead.

Not only do they feel the issues at QB are temporary, but they are extremely encouraged with other aspects of the team, particularly the defense and kicking game.

The staff thinks the defense can get even better as playmakers Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill get more and more opportunities in conference play.

There is the belief that if Texas plays well this weekend on both sides of the ball against Sam Houston State, the Horns will be exactly where they need to be headed into the off week and then into conference play.

In other words, despite all of the noise on the outside, there’s no fire drill occurring inside the Texas football offices right now.

**

Cole Hutson is day to day.

Alex January is now the same, although another game off, plus the off week, is likely best for him.

The recovery of Emmett Mosley V is still trending to the SEC opener. Same with CJ Baxter.

Mosley’s return should provide an immediate impact to a young and thin receiving corps. Ryan Wingo played 75 snaps on Saturday. That’s probably not ideal for his long-term health.

Xavier Filsaime was sidelined against UTEP. According to sources, he is one of the second year players who has really upped his game since last season. We should see more and more of him as the season goes on as long as he is healthy.

**

I’d sum it up by saying, there remains a lot of excitement about the season ahead because Texas remains very, very good on defense and the offense will get better with additional personnel and better execution.

What’s annoying re: comment about Wingo’s health and playing 75 snaps is that vs UTEP Texas should have been able to roll out some of the backups.

Defense and ST kept giving us amazing field position and we still struggled to get to 27 points. Against UTEP.

Until the offense becomes mediocre, I do hope Sark realizes this and plays for field position. Not much reason to go for it around  mid-field with the defense and punter playing like they are. I know it is against his nature, but that is just where we are right now

I think that is a big part of the problem. I think Sark is running TOO many concepts. Its not an offense, it is a playbook. GT counter has probably looked the best to me. That is just off casual watching. Zone looked to really bad. Sark needs to pare the offense down. Focus on a couple concepts and drill the shit out of them. Its a young team. They have shown they cannot handle an NFL playbook. Find a couple runs that the OL can execute and build an offense around it.

Have you guys ever thought that Sark was telling arch to go out there and sandbag early so he can just turn it on later in the year and have no good film on him? Bet you didn't think of those 5d chess moves like Sark.

I know that Sark has built up a lot of goodwill with our insiders. And that goodwill is more than justified. But it seems like they've abandoned a lot of the critical thinking skills they developed when we had shittier coaches.

The offense is alarmingly bad right now. The fact that the staff doesn't seem to be pissed off about it is even more alarming. I would hope they are as shocked about this situation as we are.

I'd hope that Bobby is just playing his part here and the reality is somewhat different. It doesn't do anyone any good for the coaching staff to panic publicly. For all we know, they told Bobby "holy shit, the guy looks more like Taryn Manning than Peyton Manning, and we have no idea why - but don't print that, we'll be fine".

I understand that insiders are dealing with a kind of tension. Their job is to tell us what is actually going on - that's what we pay them for. But they can't tell us everything relayed in confidence, because that could cost them their access. That's not an easy line to walk and I am sympathetic. But don't piss on my neck and tell me it's raining. I've got eyes and I'm not dumb.

To be clear, however, I'm not just talking about Bobby. He's in the same jackpot as the rest of them, but he usually shoots it pretty straight and will tell you what he really thinks.

The crazy thing is: Arch is playing so shitty that this is as plausible as any of the other explanations.

The truth is that the coaches and players are as confused by Farce Manning's in-game collapses as anyone else. He's looked great in practices for years and looked great in the fall camp run up to Ohio State, right until he bounced the ball to Moore on the first pass.

Do you think reporters like Burton can publicly say that? It's hardly productive for even me to say that, but I'm kind of sick of the middling discussion you guys are all having about the coaching staff as it relates to Arch Ankiel.

There's no grand conspiracy to elevate a guy because of his name. He's not losing practices. Other guys aren't performing better. The guy looks fine and then is going out in games and melting all the fucking way down. Maybe he's always wanted to be in theatre and this is his grand interview as performance art in an effort to gain entry to Juilliard and then he can put this whole football thing behind him? This is just bizarre shit.

I do think one of the biggest things Sarkisian can help course correct on is removing 3rd and 4th reads for a bit. Sounds absurd, but that's an issue, from my perspective. He needs to be: primary, secondary, check down/run/throw it away - 1, 2, 3. Dude is taking too long to go through progressions and then panic throwing.

You think you're funny, but when some of the truly stupid people on this website take this and start running with it as a plausible explanation, and pushing that on the rest of us, I'm going to blame you personally and tackle you and shave half your beard off at a tailgate. Mother fucker.

Well that’s what other people pay them for and I read about it here

I understand your point of view, but this is a painfully naive under simplification of the kind of dynamic required to be a 995er while ALSO maintaining some level of access from a staff.
