Thinking about that note about the DBs and the second team. That’s something like Black and Roberson at corner, Mack at star, and Williams and JJR at safety. We could roll that out as our starters and be just fine. Insane depth there.

How could you forget Spy Kids 3-D??

I went to high school with Glen, so at the time it was pretty cool that he was in this.

Everybody Wants Some is probably his best movie. It’s a lighthearted Linklater movie and nostalgic about being Texas college life in the 80’s. So pretty much perfect for all the olds on this board.

You mean Dazed and Confused 2?

That movie was decent (but not nearly as good as D&C).

Hitman is the best of his that I’ve seen. I also liked Maverick and Twisters, but Maverick isn’t his movie and Twisters, I’m sure, isn’t liked by snobs.

Everybody Wants Some viewed as you described for me, which was I thought it sucked. Some of us aren’t as old and worked a fuckton through college. That movie looked like it was made for a very niche group of aging fratboys and was outright boring from beginning to end.

Two transfers signed with Texas this winter yet never made it to spring ball: defensive tackle Travis Shaw and linebacker/edge Brad Spence.

Both had lingering injuries from the previous season. Both had surgeries this off-season.

Based on what I have been told from early camp feedback, both will be very key contributors to this year’s defense.

**

I am told that Shaw has been one of the better defensive tackles so far this training camp and is definitely expected to find his way into the lineup.

Shaw, who is all of 6-foot-5, 342 pounds, is one of the team’s largest players and will be a key player against opponents like Florida who focus heavily on the inside run game.

Shaw has had a very promising training camp so far. While we don’t know exactly what the DT rotation will be this season, Shaw is already penciled in as a significant part of it by the staff.

**

As for Spence, he fills a major need, perhaps a need that was under-appreciated this off-season.

After all, Texas feels like they have very good depth at the Jack position for this season, with the likes of Ethan Burke, Colton Vasek, Zina Umeozulu, Lance Jackson and even Justus Terry. But behind Colin Simmons on the other side, the depth is less appealing, especially given Trey Moore’s move to linebacker. That’s where Spence’s health and presence is so undervalued headed into 2025.

Here’s an interesting note about his health:

I’m told prior to Spence’s arrival at Texas, it was not known he would need surgery. He entered Texas and during his initial athletic testing, he could only jump about 20 inches off the ground before he started feeling pain. That issue apparently had gone on for multiple years at Arkansas so it hadn’t necessarily hurt his play on the field.

The Texas medical staff looked into it further and that’s when it was decided Spence needed surgery.

Regardless of how we ended where we are today, the bottom line is that Spence has been one of the team’s more energetic and hard-working players this summer and fall. He has very much been a “fit” into the culture that Steve Sarkisian wants.

Expect Spence to get 25-30 snaps a game as Simmons’ primary back-up this fall. Like Simmons, Spence provides elite speed off the edge.

Both Shaw and Spence have not disappointed the Texas staff despite both requiring off-season surgery.

**

One small note:

I’m hearing Texas is pleased with placekicker Mason Shipley. No, this is a massive note, Bobby.

**

I’ll have a larger update on all of the transfer portal guys and where they are fitting later today.

**

The team is off today. They resume practice on Thursday morning.

Hook’Em!

  • Great news on Shaw and Spence's roles post recovery. Additionally, it appears that people in Arkansas might be as dumb as we thought.
  • Also, apparently Shipley is impressing. Despite Bobby's nonchalant mention of it, it's certainly gruntling.
  • No practice today - it resumes Thursday.

Other than his appearance in Dark Knight Rises, I've never seen one minute of Glen Powell in a movie.

You never saw Top Gun 2?  Well then I'd say you are a cinematic idiot and I feel sorry for you.

Hope he makes it here, and doesn't have to go to NFL Europe ...

... they cannot afford another Landwehr in Europe!

(But if you do go, have a Plan for that, Marshall!  Peace!)

I may not survive this recruiting lull.

Advertising Everybody Wants Some as a comedy follow-up to Dazed killed it. EWS is a great movie, but it's not really a straight-up comedy. Way more ponderous.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the Running Man remake.

Iconoclast Texan, now known as Macklemore. He’s even more fucked up now than he was then, if you can believe it. You’ll find him in the Houston Texans thread(s) I imagine.

That's it, all I could think of was "niclecast" or "nickleback" or some crap like that,  thanks SC

I was told I was a pessimist and a doomer for worrying about Cojoe's injury and our O-line depth. Surprise surprise, Burton is worried as well.

And LOL at the notion that the Doak Walker Award watch list means anything. Le'Veon Moss and Reuben Owens are on it as well, I guess that means A&M has a stacked RB room? https://ncfaa.org/awards/doak-walker-award

Goosby's health was easily top 5 on the roster, prior to this. It is even more important now. You lose 2 people from any group, and it becomes a problem. This is not special to the tackle position. RT is a spot that Texas has some answers. Not sure that can be said for LT. Flood as recruited a decent amount of OG/RT types. Assuming Goosby performs as expected (going off memory, but I believe he had ~315 snaps without giving up a single QB hit), Texas can leave him on an island and help the RT. Injuries are never good, but I can think of at least 20 others that would have had more impact on the season.

you know he’s not a new guy, rather a coward just looking for a fresh start.

Well, you're half right. I am new here. Some of ya'll might remember me from BC or BON 10+ years ago. But I'm also a coward. I only made an account because I'm in a c2c fantasy league and I took Daylan McCutcheon probably really early and I came here to ask if he's still the WR3/4. But I chickened out and decided to defend a forgotten Linklater movie I saw once on a plane instead. Place seems all right, though. Except that one guy.

Awesome, happy to have you. First thing to do is put the dumbass you quoted on ignore and you'll then be far more likely to enjoy yourself and also not clog up threads arguing with a room temperature IQ troll.

Powell went to Westwood HS.  Fuck that guy.

Interesting. I have never had any strong feelings about Westwood.

Other than being annoyed at Westwood grads who say they went to high school in Austin. No, you didn't, you're practically from Lampasas.

While I understand your sentiment…

Saying you went to high school in Austin makes as a Westwood graduate makes much more sense than Westwood being a part of RRISD instead of AISD, or even LISD given its proximity to Cedar Park.

Aw, shit. Here we go again with geography tangents.

Now do Katy… 😀 I don’t know anyone who is in the Woodlands that claims Houston… (Even those in the Woodlands part that is in Harris County.)

One thing Bobby mentioned last night that I didn't see in his practice report - Arch is staying late with a group to run the offense even after the coaches leave. That has real "If you want to beat Ohio State, meet me here every night at 7 p.m." energy.

Fwiw, almost every team has players that do this, even in high school.
