I’m not predicting anything, but I *feel* like we are going to overwhelm them. They have arguably the best overall college player this season in Smith but for the first time in a long time the rest of the team is lacking. He can’t do it alone. I also kind of hope Devin Sanchez gets an (inconsequential) pick at somepoint, I’ve followed his career a while and it would be cool to see him announce himself in such a big game. Hopefully Arch can toss it all over the field besides that though.

Here's a Bucknuts Friday insider post of true fucktardery. They quote @Fud's buddy, Dane Brugler, who is running around spewing his idiotic take that Styles is a better LB prospect than Hill for the NFL. They quote a "random" NFL source to support that take, with "random" being a former OSU person that the Bucknuts staff knows. "Yeah, man, I like the guy with worse stats and less experience to project better at the next level." Okay, then.

Surely he isn’t speaking about this Sonny Styles that Jaydon Chatman threw out the club.

** The Eyes of Texas … We asked a source close to the Texas program for some of his thoughts going into Saturday’s titanic struggle at Ohio State. Here were some of the replies …

“The left tackle, Trevor Goosby, is a promising sophomore for Texas. He injured his hand during the preseason, but the word is he will tape it up and go play in this game. He is their best offensive lineman. We will see how he can handle the pass rush with that hand bothering him.

“With Arch Manning at quarterback … I talked to David Cutcliffe at the SEC media days. He coached both Peyton and Eli Manning in college. He said, ‘There has never been a quarterback in my lifetime with more pressure and attention on him than Arch Manning.’ You couple that with making his first road start in front of 105,000 people up there, it’s going to be interesting to see how he deals with all of that. They need to get him some easy throws, possibly, early in the game to ease him into it.

“Texas knows about (West Virginia transfer) CJ Donaldson at running back from following him in the Big 12. He is a good football player and he is tough as nails. He is a former tight end who doesn’t shy away from contact. They expect him to see the field a lot, playing in that tandem with James Peoples.

“The receiver Ryan Wingo had a good freshman year. He and Arch were on the second team together last year and have built a good chemistry together. The third receiver, Emmett Mosley, came over after a big first year at Cal. He does not look like he will play due to an ankle injury.

“Texas loves what (former OSU program assistant) LaAllan Clark has brought to coaching the edge rushers. He was Larry Johnson’s assistant there, but he’s done a good job as a full-time assistant at Texas. He’s got the preseason All-American Colin Simmons on one side and Ethan Burke, a guy with an 83-inch wingspan, on the other. We’ll see if those guys can get in there and make life difficult for Julian Sayin.”

Oh, yeah, this one has a ton of intrigue, for sure. Thanks to our good friend in Austin for the 411 on the Longhorns.

** Styles make fights … Did you catch this from NFL Draft Expert Dane Brugler on last Thursday’s BM5? While chatting about Ohio State's top draft-eligible prospects, we assumed Sonny Styles would be the second-highest rated linebacker in Saturday’s game against Texas behind Longhorns standout Anthony Hill, Jr.

Brugler called a quick timeout to inform us he had Styles rated ahead of Hill.

How about that?

We bounced that evaluation off an NFL source and whaddya know, this Brugler guy is on to something.

“Yeah, we do,” the NFL source said when asked if his team’s ‘big board’ had Styles ranked higher than Hill, Jr.

Said NFL source echoed a lot of the sentiment Brugler shared.

“Both guys are big-time,” our source said. “[Styles] has traits that are so off the chart.

“Nothing etched in stone, obviously. [All NFL teams] will have someone [at the Shoe on Saturday]. Check back in with me next week.”

Will do.

** ‘More talented, deeper roster’ … A longtime BH source checked in with – what else – thoughts on tomorrow’s marquee matchup between our Buckeyes and the visitors from Texas.

“I can hardly contain my excitement for Saturday. Not sleeping much this week,” the source said. “A strong argument can be made that despite the departures from last year’s natty team, we still have a more talented, deeper roster than Texas does. It means nothing on Saturday if our play in all phases does not rise to the challenge.

“Which reserve DTs will come of age? How will our new RB tandem, Sonic and Knuckles, uphold the standard Trey and Quinshon maintained a year ago? Can the O-Line dominate and impose their will in Game 1?   Has IGGY put his handsy issues in his rear view? I can’t wait to find out.

“Safeties and LBs need to maintain great eye discipline to find the ball. Texas uses a lot of misdirection schemes to keep defenses off balance and reactive - not in control to spring explosive plays.

“Let’s not underestimate Arch’s speed and athleticism.  I expect RB Wisner to get a lot of touches on wide zone, flare passes, wheel route, check downs, and throwback screens.

“In their throwing game, what concerns me the most are WRs Ryan Wingo, DeAndre More, and Kaliq Locket on glance and double move routes.  I’d take away the middle of the field and make Arch try to beat us with accurate throws to the outside.

“Let’s make special teams special out of the gate. Texas is breaking in two new kickers. It would be great to block a kick and take one to the house.

“The play concept we opened the Rose Bowl with to Gee Scott is one of Sarks' favorites in his playbook, especially in the red zone.

“Julian Sayin, make the routine play, routine. You don’t always have to be perfect. Just win baby. Let’s go!”

Speaking of Brugler, he put out positional rankings among draftable players a few weeks ago. Top five overall for each position, and ranks draftable underclassmen and seniors separately. Here's Texas and OSU's

Arch Manning #1 overall QB
Trey Moore #10 senior Edge
Ethan Burke #26 senior Edge
CJ Baxter #4 third year RB
Tre Wisner #6 third year RB
Jack Endries #5 third year TE
Anthony Hill #3 overall LB
DJ Campbell #4 senior IOL
Jaylon Guielbeaux #11 senior CB
Malik Muhammad #7 third year CB
Trevor Goosby #11 third year OT (this is a loaded class)
Michael Taafe #7 senior S
Deandre Moore #9 third year WR

No DTs (only had five senior DTs for some reason, if he'd listed more I assume some of our transfers would have been listed)

Carnell Tate #3 overall WR
Brandon Inniss #19 third year WR
Caleb Downs #1 overall S
Ethan Onianwa #6 senior OT (oops)
Sonny Styles #2 overall LB
Arvell Reese #7 third year LB
Max Klare #2 overall TE
Caden Curry #25 senior Edge
Kenyatta Jackson #5 third year Edge
Beau Atkinson #10 third year Edge
Davison Igbinosun #5 overall CB
Jermaine Mathews Jr #10 third year CB
CJ Donaldson Jr #11 senior RB

No DTs or IOLs

I've talked a little about what some folks who've been to the practices think we're going to see tomorrow. Sarkisian has the personnel in the RB room to go with 21 a lot. He likes the shit he can do in that scheme, we've seen this before. They also think Shannon can block in-line, which isn't nothing. Can Shannon block effectively? I need to see it to believe it, but playing him for that is no different than playing a guy who has never caught a pass in a game instead of him.

Breaking character on this for a second, but rationally, if Wingo, Moore and Endries are your top 3 targets, and the collection of playable RBs is your 4th target, how important is the 3rd WR going to be for this particular game plan?

I'm not saying McJaggerson won't play or won't be targeted. I'm sure we'll see some of that. I also don't think folks are being very critical in their thinking on this heading into tomorrow because it's a lot more fun to imagine one of Alan Jackson's bastard sons long-striding down the field for a whiteboy party in the end zone.

21 was really good for Texas under Sark. Babers is always talking about how effective it has been. He has probably under-used it historically based on the numbers. Last year it was D.O.A due to depth, but it is an interesting point that it could come back. Nibblet on the RB depth chart might be a hint you have a pt. There is not a LB in the country that can run with that guy. Clark has supposedly look great in the pass game. I not sure where Baxter is health-wise (70%, 80%, 90%0, but I am sure he can block and get some tough yards up the middle. That makes 21 dangerous pairing him with some guys that can do damage in space.

I feel like voice over hype videos went out of style about a decade ago. That Undertaker video does get me hyped because I see the team working hard n shit, but is the voice over narrative necessary? It was written similarly to some of the bs you guys come up with. There’s always a nerd who writes a limerick prior to be a big game as well.

Might be a function of how OSU plays us. If they're sitting back in coverage because they're scared of Arch bombs and think we'll stub our toe on long drives, then white lightning is less of a factor than if they're aggressively stopping the run with numbers and are trying to end drives defensively asap

I can tell you guys that the Georgia fans are not fans at all of Texas. I was reading a thread earlier on their 247 site it is glorious how much they hate Texas. A bunch of them are admitting to their board, sheepishly, it appears, that they're going to be rooting for Ohio State and against a fellow SEC team for the first time in their lives. Others are simply wishing for a meteor to strike the Horseshoe at about 12:05pm (their time) tomorrow.

Imagine how those imbeciles are going to behave when Texas starts beating them.

They absolutely don't like Texas, and at least for me the feeling is mutual. Nice to have an instant spark of dislike with someone in a new conference. Makes it more fun.

I think people are also forgetting that for a coach telling people that the plan is to win on a close game with the defense, Sark has already been a fan of exhausting DTs. Look what he did last year against Michigan. He's going to run those DT's side to side on OZ, pounding the rock, and he's going to attack their already suspect depth at DT. Then he's going to run over them.

Having 2 backs and a mobile QB is a hell of a way to get guys guessing which side the ball is going to and freezing the open field for a TE.

It's really strange for me because coming into the SEC I thought Georgia may be the only sane, rational and educated fanbase. It's almost embarrassing how wrong I was, but moreso for UGA people.

I always thought Florida was most like us, but I guess you can make the argument for UGA too.

Yeah, we'll see how the Florida fans are this year since last year they showed up with their tail between their legs, but they've seemed like the best opposing fanbase so far. No surprise it correlated with the highest-ranking school (Vandy doesn't count).

Dated a woman for a couple years in my 20s who graduated from Florida and was a yuge Gator fan.  I got the sense that Florida fans are a lot like Texas fans, but with the potential to be just a tad-more dickish.  I'm interested to hear from our folks how they're treated in Gainesville.

I predict Baxter is the "suprise!" success player in this game that does way more than average fan on either side anticipates. My instinct tells me he is responsible for the majority of our explosive yardage.

Who knows shit about fuck at this point, but I have a feeling that despite all the great things we've heard about CJ Baxter this fall, we see just a tiny dose of him tomorrow.

We have to have somebody at #2. Clark and Baxter both coming off big injuries, Gibson is fairly one-dimensional and has fumble issues and Simon is a true freshman. I wouldn't be surprised by Baxter playing a decent role.

I got two words for tomorrow

Trey Moore!!

He ended last year on fire, and I think that carries over into this season. They’re going to be so focused on Simmons and Hill. Moore is going to fuck shit up!!

I hope you're right, and I have no specific reason for my skepticism.  Also, Clark might be a Grad A Bad Ass Mother Fucker for all we know and ball out in his given carriers tomorrow.  Unlike Baxter, we've never seen shit from him since high school.

It doesn't matter if you give up on him or not. For the record, I think it's too early. But it's hard to see him sticking around this RB room unless he gets decent action this season, not with what's just come in and coming in next class. Unless he breaks out on his own, I think he's gone. It's going to happen.

I'd like to think Gibson worked hard on ball protection and blocking this offseason, but we've heard next to nothing about him in fall camp. I'd like to have heard something about how all our RBs behind Wisner and Baxter are in pass protection. I suppose one might infer, however, that those projected to play must be at least OK in that regard to earn snaps. I think Clark must be pretty far along on coming back from his injury. His running style somewhat dictates that to be true with his sharp cutting ability. I am looking forward to seeing him play.

When he portals in December, will you still be following him at Florida State or Auburn?

After a rewatch of last season I was less impressed than I was the first time around. The stuff he does well, we have other dudes who can also do that. The stuff he does poorly, is stuff we can't have RBs doing poorly and get PT. Maybe he's improved on all that, but if so we haven't heard anything on it.
