If one of your [Russian] planes is shot down in NATO territory, don’t come here to whine about it, you have been warned.

This is what I’m talking about.

damn... Poland sounds like they are throwing the fucking gauntlet down.

Putin will slink around, but I doubt he sends any aircraft into Polish areas int he future.  His talking heads on TV would have a hard time explaining to the Russian people why the Poles aren’t afraid of them.

It's an odd escalation for Putin, so you have to wonder about the motivation. The best explanation to me is that he's trying to get all these countries to hoover up and hoard air defense munitions so Ukraine faces a shortage.

100% because he had every reason to believe it would work. He’s desperate

Slightly off topic - is there really so much going on that there’s no Venezuela thread? It’s just a matter of time until they have the drone boats Russia finally developed (2 years after Ukraine?) or the long range shahed derivatives that could hit the southern US

Gosh, it's pretty surprising that when you tell someone "fuck you, we hate you, fuck off," they....back away from you and stop doing business with you as much as they possibly can.  Who could have seen this coming?

Ironically, it's actually a good thing for Germany and Europe: dumping those euros back into their own industry (at America's expense) will be a decent little economic boost.

And the whole "we can turn the equipment off if we want" might not be the best sales tactic.

???? Wait! Do you mean to say that other weapons we used to sell did not have a “turn off its ability to work when I unilaterally decide they are a shit hole country…or Vlad asks” switch?

Dozens of flights were diverted or cancelled at Copenhagen airport after a number of large unidentified drones were spotted in its airspace late on Monday.

Police said they chose not to shoot down the drones over concerns that burning debris could spark fires, and they eventually flew away. The airport has since reopened.

“What we saw last night is the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date,” Mette Frederiksen, the Danish prime minister, said. “We obviously do not rule out any options in relation to who is behind it.”

Without directly accusing Moscow, Frederiksen said that the incident was linked to recent Russian drone incursions in Poland and Romania, unspecified hacker attacks on European airports and what Estonia said was the violation of its airspace by Russian Mig-31 fighter jets.

——

Flemming Drejer, the head of Denmark’s intelligence service, said the Nordic country was facing a “high threat of sabotage”. Jens Jespersen, a police official in Copenhagen, said that the number of drones involved, as well as their size, indicated that the incursion had been carried out by a “capable actor”. He also said the drones could have been launched from a ship off the coast of the nearby Oresund Strait, which lies between Sweden and Denmark.

Drone sightings in Oslo caused the city’s airport to close for several hours. Norwegian police have yet to comment.

The incidents came as Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow forced a plane to fly low over a residential area in an effort to avoid being targeted. Video posted to social media showed the aircraft, identified as an An–124 cargo plane — one of the world’s largest — flying just above blocks of flats on the outskirts of the Russian capital.

@KYHorn interesting theory about trying to tie up European air defenses.

It’s a decent sign that Russia is getting very desperate.

They should be making five or six flamingos a day by now and stockpiling  them. The amount of damage a flamingo can do (compared to a long range drone) has to be significant.

I am waiting for the day that several of them slam into each of all the major oil refineries.

Could also be the whole "escalate to de-escalate" thing that others mentioned, where he escalates and then says "you're escalating the war by providing munitions to Ukraine, if you reduce your support we won't do it any more" or he's trying to scare the civilian populations of NATO countries, but at this point, it feels like mainstream Europe is tired of his shit and the latest stuff with Norway and Denmark is just pissing more and more people off, and everybody knows he won't use nukes.

Trying to tie up NATO air defenses could be the reason why, but he's in a race right now - the Russians themselves don't have enough air defenses to protect their energy/oil/gas infrastructure, and they appear to be powerless to hit Ukraine's rear areas where the missiles and drones are being built. Maybe he thinks if they can slow down air defense equipment flowing into Ukraine enough, they can wear down their defenses and get at those rear areas, but even just a few more weeks of daily strikes on Russian oil & gas facilities could be too much for Russia - serious fuel rationing has to be on the table soon.

Be-12s are museum pieces.  Hard to believe those are operational aircraft, and not just garbage or decoys left to decay in fields.

They only have a few flying in service, less than a dozen, and these were apparently some of the ones who were patrolling along the Crimean coast.  It actually makes sense in a Russian kind of way, because it’s what they were designed to do.  Even if it’s 85 years later.

Don't worry.  He'll probably change positions three more times before the weekend.

And so it goes, and so it goes.
