Tell me about Milwaukee

Texas St. Armadillos

Check out the Market as mentioned above, Lakefront Brewery is really cool. There’s some bars/restaurants/breweries in the 5th Ward. They have several bars/breweries along the river. There’s a booze cruise that will go up and down the river stopping at various places.

You can’t go wrong with ordering fried cheese curds everywhere you go.

Been a long time since I was there, but there was a Usinger's sausage factory outlet store downtown.  Load up on irregular-sized bratwursts and knockwursts and such, and bring it home.  And definitely bring home a buncha fresh squeaky cheese curds.  Downtown smells like beer.  It's awesome.

The Brady Street Bar district was a happening place last time I was there.  Don't know about close-by hotels.  We stayed downtown (the downtown river area and the aforementioned sausage is fun, but low-key) and Ubered to Brady Street before and after our bar crawl.

Wisconsin golf in May?  Hope the snow has melted by then!

Forgot to mention something about the market. Go to the seafood place, sit at the bar and enjoy oysters and schlitz beer.

There’s also a really good cheese shop/bar right across from what was the Bradley center. So it’s roughly across the street from the new arena. If I remember correctly, it’s on the same block as the braut place mentioned above.

If golfing at Black Wolf Run or Whistling Straights. The Horse and Plow in the American Club is a great little pub.

For Milwaukee, Beer, cheese curds and brats. The 3rd Ward has great restaurants and breweries all walkable. They are turning the old factories into condos and bars.

It has the potential to be cold as shit even in May for golf. Pack long johns, beanies multiple layers. We played Blackwolf and Whistling Straights 2 years ago in May and it was 30 when we teed off both mornings.

On the flip side, it was 98 degrees in May last year at my in-laws house boat in western Wisconsin.

Just check your forecast in advance, and be prepared for literally anything, weather wise.

Drink a lot of Spotted Cow. It’s got a pretty insane cult following up there. Can only be sold within the state of Wisconsin. New Glarus is the brewery that makes it. They have several other beers that are good.

Spotted Cow isn't all that special.  New Glarus is an excellent brewery, however.  Moon Man might be one of the best "right in the middle" pale ales in the country.  It's not a hazy IPA, nor is it a tongue curling old school hop bomb.  It's a clear, balanced, but very hop forward easy drinking beer.

Bloody Marys are a big deal in the Upper Midwest, and Milwaukee is allegedly ground zero (I've actually never been to Milwaukee, but have spent a lot of time in other parts of Wisconsin).  The mix is usually great (and totally different from bar to bar), you get some wild garnishes, and they always come with a beer chaser, which I've learned is not standard around the country.

Cheese curds are a religion.  Dip them in marinara or ranch.  Or not at all.  Eat sausage.  Be prepared for "Making a Murderer" accents.  Sconnies are awesome people, and Wisconsin is probably my favorite state (outside of my home one).  Go tailgate a Brewers game if they're in town.

My daughter goes to MSOE so I go up about 2x times a year.

For first timers if you're into Harley's go ahead and take the tour there and eat at the restaurant they provide. Old world 3rd street is great but not a full day's worth of activity, but perfect for an evening if you're on a business trip. Another touristy thing to do is the Miller tour but not one I'd enthusiastically endorse.

Spotted cow is best in the summertime IMO, I always pick up a few cases when I'm up there.  Al speaks the troof on having cheese curds and mixed drinks (bloody mary's yes) - any cheese up there is awesome IF it's fresh and not frozen.

Yes, playing Whistling (both Irish and Straits), Blackwolf Run, and Erin Hills.

First night will be in Milwaukee, then the rest in Kohler.  Staying at the Inn at Woodlake, part of the American Club group.

Already invested in good outwear gear and will be watching the weather closely leading up to the trip.

Yeah, the miller tour is alright, they do give you a good amount of free beer at the end though.

New Glaurus (where spotted cow is brewed) is incredible. Well worth the drive to check out the views, granted like mentioned above you’ll have to do it when warm out.

Milwaukee is a great town - very clean and walkable. Stay at the Pfister Hotel for a little history and some ghosts.

https://www.mlb.com/cut4/haunted-baseball-stories-from-pfister-hotel/c-298043052

Potawatomi Casino is near downtown and definitely worth a stop.

Collectivo Coffee is a a great coffee shop on the lake with a massive outdoor patio.

Milwaukee Ale House on the river is touristy but has a solid beer list and is near the Public Market.  Also some fun bars in West Town including: Milwaukee Brat House, Old German Beer Hall, Who's on Third, and Loaded Slate.

Walk down the Riverwalk downtown and take a selfie with the Fonzie statue.

Milwaukee is an average city in my mind.  Not a ton to do (you definitely feel like you're in the rust belt), but enough to keep you occupied for a couple of days.  The art museum is amazing.  I second Lakefront Brewing, I really enjoyed the tour.  If you're into coffee, Kickapoo has a shop downtown and it's one of the best five or six spots for a pour over I've ever been to.  Haven't been, but the new Bucks arena also looks awesome.

Madison is worth the trip if you have time - only about an hour fifteen between the cities.  My in-laws live in Milwaukee and if we ever had to move to Wisconsin, I'm picking Madison ten times out of ten.

The actual New Glarus brewery is a hell of a facility.  Driving up that hill reminds me of Elsinore Castle in "Strange Brew", but instead of creepy Canadians trying to take over the world with mind-control beer, it's like a giant adult play ground with great beer.

RE New Glarus's sale status:  It's not that they can't sell outside of Wisconsin.  The owners have chosen to stay inside Wisconsin's borders, and it's been a brilliant business move.  The fact that it's only available in Wisconsin has ratcheted the hype up a notch.  They make great beer, but making it hard to get has only increased their legend.

Heading there a week from Friday for the first time.  Got the Lakefront tour scheduled for 1PM on Saturday.  Pretty open outside of that, but have a few Bloody stops that I want to make.

Anyone know any good watering holes for live music?

Don't know about live music (probably mostly polka bands in Milwaukee, anyway!), but as I mentioned above, the Brady Street district is a happening bar and food scene.

Yeah, we're going to be kicking around there for sure.  I kind of want to close Wolski's and get that bumper sticker.

spend time at the bar, if the owner is there she’ll want to know where you’re from and what you’re doing. Food is good, but atmosphere and bar are just fantastic. Get a later slot to optimize bar time. Not sure if you can eat at the bar or not. I know I’ve had appetizers at the bar.

Crab bisque is great. Bbq shrimp is damn solid.

they treat me like gold, they have pictures of my family on the wall

If you are driving and your route home involves taking 94 south into Illinois, be sure to stop at the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha along the way.

We live due west (actually a bit north even) of Milwaukee and won't go through Illinois.  Iowa and Wisconsin border for about 30% of Iowa's eastern flank.  We live like 10 miles from Minnesota, so Illinois is a pretty good jaunt to the south and would add a lot of driving.

We'll stop and either hike, snowshoe, or XC ski at a state park early Friday AM and hit Milwaukee late morning with a thirst and appetite.  Sobelman's is right off 94 and close to our hotel.  We plan to go there first, and then hit Steny's before checking in to the hotel.  I've got 3-4 other spots for Bloody's per my research but we might save some for the Saturday hangover.  It will be a good pre-game for the Lakefront tour.

As we've been figuring out our weekend, I mentioned to my wife that after we check in to the hotel and clean up, we could walk to the art museum if we wanted to slip something classy in, or we could just start bar hopping if we wanted to "be drunk".  She thought for a second and goes "let's go with 'drunk'".

You guys should definitely check out Bryant's then. It's cozy and you'll be however drunk as you care to be when you leave. Make a reservation.

And The Safe House is a fun place to drink for a couple of hours.

HA!

I drug this thread up as I'm going there next week to see Turnpike Troubadours, and wanted to skim over it for places I haven't checked out (I've been back to Milwaukee once since I posted in here last year).

This has become my Saturday AM in Milwaukee must do.  Stumbled upon it accidentally in '22 and did it again this spring.  Fuck real brunch, slam oysters and Schlitz.  Completely missed this post when I found this thread last year.

I'm not into brewery tours and craft beers, but I love me some neighborhood dive bars. And per capita, there is no greater neighborhood dive bar city in this country than Milwaukee. My liver still aches from my last visit in the summer of 2022.

Sobelman's is fucking awesome btw. I mean, look at this ridiculous thing:
