Jeff Howe: Tom Herman shows off tactical brilliance for huge recruiting weekend

When it comes to recruiting, Tom Herman does a good job of channeling his inner “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Just when everyone thinks they’ve got the answers, he changes the questions. For starters, why did Texas target this weekend, the first weekend of the month of May, to host 2019 recruits on official visits? Oscar Giles dropped a reminder on Saturday about the unique ability Texas has to sell more than football and academics due to the city of Austin and the vibrancy of the live music scene surrounding the Forty Acres, which revealed what could have been a part of Herman’s plan all along.

The Texas defensive line coach took to Twitter moments after the news of Converse Judson defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal — a Texas A&M verbal commit — being on campus for an official visit went public to remind the masses that Austin is “the place to be this weekend” with the second day of the three-day JMBLYA Music Festival taking place at Circuit of The Americas. This year’s festival, which took place in Dallas on Friday and will conclude in Houston on Sunday, is headlined by multi-platinum rapper J. Cole. The bill also includes Migos, Young Thug and the recently-added T.I.

Along with Giles, Herman did his part to promote the festivities by retweeting a message from legendary Texas-based rapper Bun B, who will also be making an appearance in Austin this weekend. Bun B has been a supporter of Herman since he began his tenure as the head coach at the University of Houston, support that one of the founding members of the legendary hip-hop duo UGK told Spectrum Sports last summer is still strong with Herman now leading the Longhorns.

On a weekend when Austin is helping dominate the nation’s music conversation, Herman and the Longhorns have several elite-level prospects on campus. Along with Leal, five-star offensive lineman Tyler Johnson of Conroe Oak Ridge and five-star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. (Baton Rouge, La./Dunham School) are joining Fort Worth Nolan Catholic defender NaNa Osafo-Mensah, Chandler (Ariz.) tight end Brayden Liebrock and Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab athlete Makiya Tongue are on their official visits this weekend.

Herman only hosted one official visitor (Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson) during the weekend of the spring game. Rather than play host to official visitors during the final weekend of spring practice, Herman chose to have his staff devote their time and energy to a weekend when it would be all about recruits.

Whether recruits actually attend the festival or not is irrelevant — it's the kind of option choosing Texas offers that few other college towns can provide. The fact that Herman centered the biggest recruiting weekend of the 2019 cycle (so far) around a weekend when the capital city is experiencing an overload of pop culture buzz shows that when it comes to having his ducks in a row, Herman continues to show he’s as good as they come regarding matters on the recruiting trail.

Wilkins weighed in at 267 lbs. at the Dallas opening.  Will be interesting to see if he can add the necessary weight in a college S&C program or ends up like JP Urquidez and has a hard team adding muscle/bulk.

Tom Herman will never flip a kid from Jimbo Fisher??? LMAO, sweet Jesus, the delusions of Aggy never cease to amaze.

Idiots like Al Golden and Jim McElwain were able to flip kids from Jimbo.

Newsflash Aggy. Jimbo is selling an inferior brand compared to what he used to have. Grab your ankles and brace yourselves.

Jimbo has no problem showing them how to grab their ankles. Candi showed him while he was watching

So it's stupid for Texas to use their official visit now on Leal, but it makes perfect sense for Aggy to use their official visit three weeks ago?

Even for an Aggy that's confusing AF logic.

I would much rather use an official visit if I'm able to take a recruit to a badass concert that might actually improve that recruit's visit.

Jesus man Bomani Jones served up Eric Nahlin on twitter.. ouch.

Nahlin has become increasingly annoying on Twitter over time. In particular, I need to figure out how to disable viewing the tweets that he favorites especially those of a political bent.

This is definitely day drinking weather in Austin.

We pull this off and Jimbo will be doing some drinking of his own... certainly not during the day, though

E.J. Holland: Intel from huge official visit weekend

— I caught up with Joyce Osafo-Mensah, the mother of NaNa Osafo-Mensah, right before their visit to Austin. Here is what she said about what she wants to see and where their recruitment stands: “I like Texas because it’s close to home. But you have to think of what’s best for him for life after football and college. We’re looking at both schools (Texas and Notre Dame) and seeing which one is the best fit. I like all the coaches at Texas. They are great coaches. I also like everything at Notre Dame. I like the atmosphere and education there. Academics is our No. 1 priority. We’re looking forward to this weekend, so we can make the right decision. It’s going to be a hard decision. I’m 50/50.”

— Both Osafo-Mensah and Tyler Johnson are spending a lot of time with Texas offensive lineman Tope Imade. He has a great relationship with both prospects — Imade and Osafo-Mensah are from D-FW, and he is very similar from a personality standpoint to Johnson. Imade is playing a big role in both of these recruitments and is a secret weapon for the Longhorns. With that said, Derek Kerstetter is hosting Johnson, and Denzel Okafor is hosting Osafo-Mensah.

— Four-star Louisiana athlete Makiya Tongue did not arrive in Austin until 10:30 p.m. last night, so his official visit is just getting started. While Tongue remains high on Georgia, we are continuing to hear that Texas is in the pole position here. Tongue really wants to play wide receiver, and Texas is giving him the opportunity to do so, which is a factor in his recruitment.

— I am told that five-star cornerback Derek Stingley is having a great time on campus. He got to spend extended time with former defensive back and current staffer Michael Huff. The two really hit it off. Stingley is looking for a great blend of athletics and academics, which will be a focal point today. He and the rest of the recruits are about to start position meetings.
