EJ after dark: Takeaways from watching Texas commit Smith

— On this same weekend last year, I flew out to Kentucky to see then Texas commit Rondale Moore. This time around, I got to experience the Jake Smith show. Smith put up more production in the first quarter than Moore did the entire game I attended. Smith is exactly what you want in a slot receiver — a smooth route runner, a sure handed pass catcher and an explosive playmaker. Smith also has good size and is effective as a returner on special teams. Texas ended up losing Moore to Purdue and signed Josh Moore — a player more akin to Smith. However, Smith is head and shoulders above where both Moores, who were All-Americans, were at this time last year. This kid is special.

— After seeing Smith in 7v7, practice and in-game, there is no doubt in my mind that he is going to change the face of the Texas offense and be an immediate impact player. Smith is extremely versatile as he lined up in the slot, on the outside and in the backfield and was dominant at every position. Smith racked up close to 230 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in basically one half of play. Texas plans to use Smith in a very similar role, so expect him to not only be a true slot but a Swiss army knife that can change the game in various ways.

— One of the things that really stood out to me about Smith was his ability to explode into his second gear and go. Smith can hit his top end speed in a hurry and when he does, there is no stopping him. The four-star prospect has elite level speed and can take the top off a defense. While he doesn’t have the shake of a Jaylen Waddle, he’s just as electrifying with the ball in his hands and is just as good if not better than Waddle in all other areas. Another thing that I loved about Smith was how fluid he is. He is a natural glider and accelerates out of his breaks.

— So where does his commitment stand? Right now, Smith is completely solid to the Longhorns and is not wavering. Smith flashed the Hook Em' sign throughout the night and told me he is all in on scheme fit and the future of the program. As we previously reported, Smith will be back in Austin on Sept. 15 when the Longhorns take on USC.

I know I've read some people mention Jamaal Charles as a comp, but Brown doesn't have anywhere near that level of freaky athleticism.  I think Kam Martin is a better comp.  Good, not great athlete.  Somewhat slender build, but shows out against HS competition.  He could be productive if developed well and utilized properly.  Kam has done pretty well when he's played, but he can't take the hits.  Brown probably won't take the hits either.  As long as the role the staff has in mind fits his frame, he could be useful.  He's a nice complement to a traditional RB.

Jamaal Charles is a hilariously terrible comp. I don't think Kam is that similar either

I never understood the anxiety over our wide receiver recruiting. The 18/19 classes are going to be two of the best classes I can remember. I realize our dipshit position coach is not responsible for landing them all but we are stacked with talent in those classes.

Because some of us would rather have guys like Waddle and Preston than not have them. This staff will always find adequate replacements at any position, but you can't always count on replacement elite talent at any position by hustling for backup plans. We should do much better going forward though once the offense gets going and we have a WR coach who's "Texas good" after this season

There’s nuance and also unnecessary incompetence that makes the WR recruiting somewhat complex compared to other spots.

If Texas is good or rising, it really doesn’t matter who is coaching the position, as Texas will land some studs. As well, the state is a WR factory at this point, so if we’re properly recruiting to system and not just pulling a Bobby Kennedy, we’ll do okay. Finally, we have a depth problem after this season and with the rumored attrition at top of mind in the spring, anxiety at bringing in guys has been warranted. That’s the nuance side.

Then there’s the dipshit aspect, and Mehringer has rained that down in spades and it is worthy of derision. He ran off RHM, turned Collin Johnson into a mixed up afterthought, made Duvernay totally irrelevant and celebrated the mediocrity of Lorenzo Joe. Then mix in effectively ruining the shots with Wilson and Higgins while flat out missing on Wright, and you’ve got a potent cocktail of hate for a worthless motherfucker with no pedigree and no business representing the school.

It’s not that hard to understand. Also, I can overlay your last sentence onto the statements of 90% of the posters talking recruiting during the 2006-2010 era of Mack Brown recruiting and it would all match. Weakness at a position or two doesn’t matter, until it does. Meh is not the bar.

We have had a grand total of two WRs drafted in the last ten years. So when everyone keeps repeating "no need to worry about WR, the state is always loaded" like a broken record it's kind of meaningless. Especially when we see TCU, Baylor, A&M, blOU, and OK. ST killing it at the position compared to us, all with in-state WRs.

Meanwhile, Mehringer continues to alienate and mismanage the WRs we do bring in, while botching the recruitments of our top in-state targets. It's not hard to understand. Why are we content with continued mediocre coaching/recruiting at a position we've flat-out sucked at for the last ten years?

I thought it was pretty well known that there are 2 wide receiver coaches and that he will be leaving after the season. I can understand a recruit being concerned about the uncertainty but I don't see why one would care that Meh is a worthless prick.

The old “I know your position coach sucks. Trust me. We are gonna get rid of this guy even though we can’t say it publicly”. Sound strategy.

Recruitnik fantasyporn at its finest. There isn’t anything guaranteed about coaching turnover. We can hope, that’s it. I saw people speak definitively of Davis, Watson, Nunez, McWhorter, Reese, and Drake leaving over the years only to be proven dead wrong, time and again.

They were saying the same thing about Jordan Elliot when he committed to coach khaki in the 2016 class. Then was given a warm welcomed once he finally signed the dotted line for Texas.

And they hate him again for taking his football and heading home..to Mizz

Ah, the new knocked it out of the park or blew him away

I used to say that sportswriters were the dumbest people in the world paid to write. I now identify a new, lower subcategory: recruiting "writers." It's been known for a long time, but I make it official in the RomaVicta Taxonomy.

If he signs here, I agree we stole one. But half the posters here need to have their noses rubbed in shit until they see the light how far we've fallen, which should never happen at Texas. Muh diamonds in the rough.

The differences in comparing the WR classes of 18/19 with the Mack Brown recruiting of 2006 to 2010 is we are actually getting good players this time. I openly laughed out loud at our WR takes on the IT board then as either camp fever picks or products of lazy recruiting analysis by scout services and our staff. I think we have, legitimately 2 starting caliber/all Big 12 type players in each class. Greg Timmons being the number one wide receiver in the state was a fucking joke then that I openly mocked only to have the hoople heads there roast me for it.

Our current wide receiver coach is a disaster and he needs to be fired for gross mismanagement of the position. My compliments to these two classes should in now way be read as any kind of endorsement to our current position coach.

My point was that allowing a coach to hang on because “Meh, we’re getting good players anyway” was the 2006-2010 recruitnik battle cry for the conformists. Not that that was you or me. This time around, it trends the same if the cancer isn’t dealt with early, even if the evaluations have started out much better.

If Herman finds himself out of a job next year, he will have no one to blame but himself for assembling a horrendous coaching staff with guys like Beck, Mehringer, Warehime, and Giles. That is Charlie Strong level bad

He wont get shitcanned out of next year even if he goes winless. year 4 he would, tho--and should if he does.

Wrong, but don't read it as an endorsement of those guys. It is interesting though that if we brought in Applewhite as OC, there would have been a big outcry that we should have done better. Beck's biggest problem is that he out kicked his coverage: What is the Peter principle saying, "people in a hierarchy tend to rise to their level of incompetence"? Beck would be great as a position coach and he may be good at managing but he is a bad play caller. Giles and Warehime are meh. Meh is worse than meh.

Kinda the reverse Giles argument.  We could be getting better DL players but he's a decent to good coach.

But,  you are right the answer to the problem is have great recruiters that are great coaches.

I know that sounds obvious,  but that should always be the goal.

Honestly, I just expect a mix of competent in one thing and great in another, or good and good. Good and great or great and great would be amazing, but hard to find and harder to keep.

What the fuck? Warehime is super shitty.
