Recruitnik fantasyporn at its finest. There isn’t anything guaranteed about coaching turnover. We can hope, that’s it. I saw people speak definitively of Davis, Watson, Nunez, McWhorter, Reese, and Drake leaving over the years only to be proven dead wrong, time and again.

After some of the shit he's pulled this spring and summer, I don't see how he's retained, but we'll see

Honestly, I just expect a mix of competent in one thing and great in another, or good and good. Good and great or great and great would be amazing, but hard to find and harder to keep.

I guess that's a good way to look at it,  for sure keep the bad out.

UT should be able to do that at a minimum.

We have had a grand total of two WRs drafted in the last ten years. So when everyone keeps repeating "no need to worry about WR, the state is always loaded" like a broken record it's kind of meaningless. Especially when we see TCU, Baylor, A&M, blOU, and OK. ST killing it at the position compared to us, all with in-state WRs.

Meanwhile, Mehringer continues to alienate and mismanage the WRs we do bring in, while botching the recruitments of our top in-state targets. It's not hard to understand. Why are we content with continued mediocre coaching/recruiting at a position we've flat-out sucked at for the last ten years?

All valid points, but our poor performance at wide receiver goes hand in hand with our entire offense over the past few years.  I am not going to dispute coach meh’s tenure thus far.  I will say that poor offensive line play and serious lack of above average qb play leads to a poor passing game as well.

My point was that allowing a coach to hang on because “Meh, we’re getting good players anyway” was the 2006-2010 recruitnik battle cry for the conformists. Not that that was you or me. This time around, it trends the same if the cancer isn’t dealt with early, even if the evaluations have started out much better.

Totally agree. I was merely attempting to separate the two issues and in practice it is probably impossible to separate the coaching from the recruiting success.

I will not lose sleep over missing on Preston, Waddle or Wilson. Not when we are getting top quality players. I lose sleep over missing top quality defensive linemen because well, we are not getting the out of state equivalent of Jake Smith on the line this year.

Jalen Reagor is the only receiver I am really pissed about missing on. He was there for the taking and is better than all of the above mentioned players and we just straight fucked that one up. There was no Alabama, Ohio State or street agent to fight against. Just our own incompetence.

CTJ is just pontificating. I don't think he would be willing to bet on it unless it was something that he had no problem losing, like replacing him at the dinner table for a night with EJ.

Maybe, but didn't Herman attempt to get Major to hire Meh and Ware on the Coug staff this past offseason.  That makes me think that those two underperforming coaches have one foot out the door whether they want to or not.

2 year contracts baby. I think you’re right.

Relevant to WR numbers: TFB is reporting that Davion Curtis intends to transfer.

Interesting that we are doing this before the start of the season. He is decent but doesn't have much of a chance to make it to the league.

Timing seems weird to me.

Timing isn't weird dependent on where he was on the depth chart. You normally see players transfer at this time during fall camp that realize they aren't going to get many reps.

Maybe that wasn't the case with Curtis but I'm guessing it played a role.

For whatever reason, people think that most of the transfers happen before fall camp. But often it takes players seeing where they are on the pecking order before they realize it's time to move on. The Cuffee, Bonney and Curtis transfers all scream "depth chart" type transfers after a few weeks in fall camp.

I agree.

On a different note, the WR depth chart for 2019 looks grim if:

a) there’s further attrition - specifically with guys heading to the NFL. I am not saying it is likely, but crazier shit has happened than LJH or Johnson having huge years and waving the deuce.

b) we don’t take 5 wrs in this class and redshirt 2 of them.

What I'm curious about is the player on scholly until spring semester and stay in school till then,  or does he pay tuition if he wants to stay at UT?

Does he not participate in practice but get semester paid for?

I know the numbers work out but curious who pays for what in that kind of a deal?

I'll be surprised if we lose both LJH and Johnson but that's just a total guess.

Which is probably why Curtis transferred. The starting WRs are all JRs so Curtis would probably need 2/3 of those guys to dip early to get significant reps next year. It could happen but I can see why Curtis wouldn't exactly be thrilled about the idea of potentially going into year 4 as a backup. This doesn't even account for the young WRs that have apparently looked good in practices.

I don't think the fall semester has even started yet at UT but I don't keep up with that stuff anymore.

There shouldn't be any issues with the transfer. Curtis can probably transfer to another school before the fall semester even starts.

Also, that 2016 recruiting class is trending towards pure dumpster fire. Holy shit, they’re coming into their 3rd season and the attrition is already staggering.

Gone:

Delance, Fowler, Elliott, Daniels, Cuffee, Southall, Hemphill-Mapps, Curtis, Demarco Boyd, and Aucoin. That’s 11 guys here for 2 or less seasons.

Buried in the DC and plausible to transfer:

Fitzgerald, Urquidez, Porter, Christmas, Chris Brown, Donovan Duvernay

Sniffing playing time but not starting, much less starring:

Hudson, McCullough, Buechele, Okafor, Wilson, Imade

Starting and sometimes starring:

Devin Duvernay, Brandon Jones, Collin Johnson, LJH, Roach, Shackleford

I mean, that is a grim class if trends hold for years 3-5.

You just now noticed this. After last year. I couldn't wait for Charlies guys to leave and I liked Charlie.

Never forget Bobby Burton said LJH was the worst take in the class because he didn't have a position.

Any kind of decent season from Devin Duvernay and I think he bolts for the NFL with lil' bro transferring.

Woodard needs to be ready for meaningful minutes in 2019

I think Smith can play day one, although slot/h probably isn't the issue, with Moore apparently progressing, especially if Jamison stays there

Whittington being an early enrollee helps

We need an x-wr in this class

Years of eligibility left after the season

1- CJ, LJH, Duvernay

3- Pouncey

4/5- Eagles, Woodard, Moore, maybe Jamison

All three of the top group are flight risks. We already have a slot in Smith committed, a like for like replacement for Duvernay in Houston, and an inside/outside guy in Whittington. We really need an x-wr; Wright would have been perfect.

I need to see it to believe it. I do think some of these WRs will have a good year but we're talking about 3 WRs bolting that have produced very little to this point.

If we have 3 WRs that produce enough to get drafted we better win a lot of games.

Counterpoint: Strong's recruits tend to have an over-inflated sense of their value, and some of these guys have thought about transferring and might want to get out asap

Maybe Boyd will show the youngsters there is value in staying.

Thought Donovan Duvernay wants to be a football coach after college??  If so, best to be around T.Orlando as much as possible to learn.

Question:  Does Herman approve a Davion Curtis transfer to Baylor??

Absolutely not. Kid is supposed to be a quality dude, but he hasn't put in 4 years.

Ah, the new knocked it out of the park or blew him away

I used to say that sportswriters were the dumbest people in the world paid to write. I now identify a new, lower subcategory: recruiting "writers." It's been known for a long time, but I make it official in the RomaVicta Taxonomy.

You quite obviously never read Jim Murray or Dan Jenkins or Blackie Sherrod . . .

I'm sure you can find some smart, non-cultist Aggies, too. I was talking about sports writers as a group. Those three not particularly current names sort of prove my opinion. Ketch is the heir to Dan Jenkins? EJ the heir to Sherrod?

Get the picture?

I am still trying to figure out what Strong was actually good at. Nothing seems like the correct answer. His evaluations were extremely poor, his players were soft, the conditioning program was garbage and he had no idea what he was doing on game day. Herman and his staff come in late in the 2017 cycle and cobble together a class that passes up almost every single one of Charlie’s guys.

Now that his South Florida team is not stocked with top quality returning upper classmen I suspect things are going to go south pretty quickly for him.

If he didnt have an elite qb pull his ass put of the fire 5 or so times last year it would already be a dumpster fire. Instead hes in a house with a broken gasline waiting to blow up like Jack’s condo in fight club.

Thet team got worse as the season went on.

I hope Chris Warren’s success doesn’t hurt RB recruiting. I’m still not clear why he didn’t pan out here at RB. I know there is the supposed “saving himself for the nfl” issue but even with that I wouldn’t think a position change would have been the answer. The whole situation was strange.

Also, seeing Curtis transfer so fast also surprises me. Is the staff being too blunt about playing time potential? Some players change over a year or two. It seems like the recruiting strategy is super aggressive about cycling thru players that don’t fit. Is Alabama this aggressive?

With Warren, let's see how things play out in Oakland during the regular season before calling anything a success.  It's still pre-season and way early to make any assessments.

On all the various transfers, I'm just chalking it up to a myriad of things like a complete culture change and being recruited over.  It's very clear CS's evals were largely garbage and it isn't taking long for his recruits to get passed up on the depth chart.  Toss in a completely different culture/program than most of them committed to and it makes some sense.  When we start seeing THs recruits transferring with regularity I'll start wondering a bit.
