Utah is colder, more culturally conservative, and basically more different than California in every way than Austin. It doesn't check out.

I never said he was a hippie just he didn't like living in Texas. I wasn't told this but I'm assuming because it's so far from home. Some kids want to get away from home for college but find out later a plane ride only level of away is too much to handle.

Plus he sees Ehlinger cement the job for 2 years so why stay?  Just saying what I was told from my relative that is in the program, but I'm not personally there so believe what you want.

It’s right next to California.  Similar mountain desert landscape, beautiful campus, cheaper travel.  It’s a true western state whereas Texas is Texas.  It’s hot

Such an awesome decision though to have your highest rated recruit hosted by the guy who was one foot out the door. That is some serious lack of awareness by our staff. So now Bru’s comments make a lot of sense, in hindsight. His fucking host told him not to come here.

Fuck Rising and I hope he enjoys everything Utah has to offer.

Salt Lake City is not close to LA. At all. It is very much still a plane ride away. #surlygeography

So he was lying when he said the visit is what made him really think hard about Texas?

Either way, it still takes a startling lack of awareness to make a guy who is halfway out the door be the host for Bru.

I know this is a good recruiting staff overall, but sometimes they make some baffling decisions.

Exactly. I think this is a “good” recruiting staff that has massive room for improvement. There’s a lack of self awareness and hubris that permeates this staff. If we don’t connect on big names this cycle then I think we know what this staff’s capabilities are.

I've driven from Salt Lake City to LA. It's about a 9.5 hour drive depending on traffic and what part of LA. Much different than a 30 hour drive from Austin.

If you just want to come up with shit to make yourself feel better about hating the kid go ahead and hate him. But don't make shit up.

Is that what I said? He was quoted as saying new shit came to light with people telling him not to come here. And his host was Rising. Do you think that helped or hurt our chances with him?

Even if the outcome was already determined, Rising can go fuck himself for telling a recruit that. And our staff was completely wrong for having him host a recruit.

It’s a boring as drive but it’s a 1 highway straight shot and you get to stop in Vegas.

I don't hate the kid at all, I'd just never consider 10 hours a realistic "driveable" distance on a regular basis.

I guess others' mileage may vary (har har)

He probably just told him how far away it is from home and it's too far for his liking.

The staff made the mistake if they had him host. They looked at the surface "hey, Cam is from LA and this kid is too so let Cam host". They didn't really read their own player very well or were negligent and didn't think about it.

I went to college a 9 hour drive away from home and drove back at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break (sometimes) and for the summer. Usually at least one other time a year.

Here he can't do any of that. His family would have to front a plane ticket and he's just here to sit the sidelines and watch the new sophomore QB who just beat Georgia in the sugar bowl play for 2 more seasons.

This isn't that complicated.

A lot of people don't know this, but El Paso is actually closer Los Angeles than Silsbee is to Austin, if you're giving Lagaryonn Carson a ride.

It’s still a faulty argument. I drove from Austin to El Paso frequently, and when you add up all the maintenance, gas, etc, it’s pretty much cheaper to fly. That’s not even getting into how much time you’ll actually have there. Flights from Austin to LA aren’t expensive either, and to be frank, no P5 QB player is going to worry about money to fly home.

Utah makes sense more due to playing games in Southern California much more frequently, but it’s still quite a trek to LA.

I think the new norm for Texas should be to take two QB's every cycle. The first coaching staff that can effectively sell top level recruits on a 2 QB class due to the transfer portal will have an enormous advantage. Let the cream rise to the top and let the rest transfer out. We should anticipate losing 1 to 2 QB's each offseason and account for that with numbers. If guys go unexpectedly like Rising, then you at least have guys who know the system and can be good if not great until the next wunderkind takes over. I think Casey Thompson can evolve into a great QB in this system. Roschon needs 2 years to become a better passer, but he has elite potential.

Cam Rising is a guy I hate to lose, but our offense would have looked closer to when Shane was on the field with him as the starter, and that is not as effective without a great running game behind him. I expect us to take another step forward in the run game, but I doubt we become an elite running team next year. Shane is a guy I am happy to see go, both for him to see playing time and to keep the younger guys in the fold.

The team. It isn't a secret when a dude is talking about transferring to teammates during September of his freshman year. He wasn't happy here so best for him to go elsewhere.

So I wasn’t the only one who thought his pornstache was lame?

It will take a combination of a shift in recruiting and learning how to work the transfer portal to our advantage.

Caseys Spring Game Highlights:

Didnt really remember him in the Spring game, but after watching this, he’s not as fast or “electric” as I thought he’d be....but I’d love for him to stay since he has over a year of experience in this offense.

It's because the spring game defense was fast and electric too

I like the idea of taking two more often than not, but taking two "top-level" QBs is going to be a tough ask.

QBs are coming in more prepared than ever to contribute early.  The idea of signing a highly recruited guy and expecting him to stick around and take the reigns as a RS JR are long gone.  If your starter is an underclassman, don't expect a lot of talented depth to stick around behind him.  Coaches have to be on point in their evals.  Take 2 if you can, but that's not a realistic option every year.  We are going to need to start producing NFL QBs if we are going to be able to take advantage of transfers though.

It's positive if your admission standards are relaxed enough to allow the majority of transfers to gain acceptance, I'd think.

We don't exactly fall in that category.

It’ll be a net positive for blue bloods just like HS recruiting and grad transfers already are.  Once coaches like Herman adjust to it, probably by next offseason. Guys who blow up at smaller schools will want to come here. We’ll lose some guys cuz of it, but as long as Herman utilizes that avenue, we’ll come out positive on talent acquisition.

Is there a difference between admissions standards for recruits out of high school and normal (non-graduate) transfers?

No. Unless they’re trying to get into McCombs or a couple other programs. This idea that we don’t take kids based on academics is dumb.

SIAP. All of our recruits had some good flash plays, besides Watson who was hurt and people raced about him in practice.

Roschon may not test crazy well, but he’s an explosive and dynamic runner for sure.

Gbenda showed some really good acceleration. I think he’s a perfect Big 12 ILB.

My thought is that it will spread the QB wealth across to more programs, but will damage QB depth for bigger schools. The current Texas situation seems like it could be a microcosm of this - instead of having 5 quality QBs next year, we'll have 3 and someone else gets Buechele for a year (maybe SMU) and someone else gets Rising for a few years. Thus, two additional teams upgrade at QB, while Texas's depth is thinned. Same with the QB who is transferring from OU while they're adding an experienced QB, etc.

On the other hand, I could see big programs benefiting overall by filling holes at other positions with grad transfers (see Calvin Anderson and Tre Watson). Guys from smaller schools who may have been overlooked out of HS and perform well in C-USA or whatever will start getting recruited to bigger programs.

So...for major programs, I could see it as a negative at QB (at least in terms of depth) and a positive elsewhere.

Sounds like a job for a special assistant.  Scout the C-USA type and smaller schools for that player that has developed late and slipped through.

I know you couldn't recruit the guys unless they put their name in the portal,  but you would think a pretty good player would put their name in the portal every year to see if you could upgrade schools.

One thing I see now that I didn't notice when I watched the AA game was how great Washington is at the scramble drill. Both of his touchdown catches, it appeared his route ended and he never stopped moving, looking for that little space for his QB to find him. Honestly, you don't see that a lot from Collin; once his route ends, he kind of sits in the zone and waits for the throw. Washington. I can see a lot of those elusive 50+ yard plays in the near future.

The portal system looks like the admission process of some universities where the freshman year is treated as another chance to improve your chances to get in the major you want. If your GPA is good and you took the math/physics classes, you can jump from, say, psychology major to electrical engineering major. Some universities go to more extreme and admit freshmen without offering them any major at all. They have to compete against their colleagues to get the major they want. This increases uncertainty for the students a lot because they may be set to get into computer science, but even after two years and having failed to leapfrog their colleagues, resort to transferring to sister universities (UT to UTD, say) to get into their desired major.

What this means is that an athlete set to be QB but not offered as one, may go to G5 to show that (i) he can play QB and transfer to P5 as QB, or (ii) fail as QB and try to join as DB/WR to P5 for which he was originally recruited by P5. In other words, for both universities and athletes, the admissions is not a once in four year thing, but a yearly review process with two likely movements in a four year span, similar to a student jumping to a major they want after sophomore year or jumping from ACC to UT after freshman year.
