Either Miley is hurt or he’s tipping pitches.  Or maybe he just sucks and held it together with smoke and mirrors until now.

His FIP and xFIP (fielder-independent pitching on FG) have been significantly higher than his ERA all season, suggesting some smoke and mirrors to keep his ERA low.

His BB and K rates are just about in line with his career averages. He's a 4 ERA guy, not a 3 ERA guy.

Based on data from baseballsavant.com, Miley's velocity is higher in the last two games compared to all his previous starts in MMP this year.  Spin rate is also slightly higher on all his pitches except the 2-seamer.

It could be due to smaller sample size when looking at just two games, but the pitch location charts show his pitches coming slightly more inside to RHB than before these two debacles.  Release points seem to be about the same.  Since release points and velocity / spin are in line with previous performances it does not appear to be a physical issue.

I get it that he's not a 3.00 ERA guy and no one thought that would hold up, but these last two performances have been more than just a reversion to the mean.

He looks like the kind of guy you'd go back to the dugout saying, "He doesn't have much. We can hit him hard." Same as Keuchel for several years...and a lot of other "crafty' pitchers before him. Sometimes these guys keep it going for a whole season, and sometimes they don't. I'm guessing the real Wade Miley is way closer to an ERA of 4.5 than he is to a 3 or 6. But we sure need him to be where he was for most of the season.

Chandler Rome has an article that suggests a) Miley is a "pitch-to-contact" guy (so he is not going to blow batters away like JV and Cole); b) opponents are making an effort to stay inside the ball and go the opposite way.

First inning last night was

88mph single to RF by RHH

93mph out to CF by RHH

Walk

72mph single to RF by RHH

93mph single to CF by RHH

102 mph single to RCF by RHH

77mph single to RF by RHH

102 mph single to LF by RHH

90 mph single to RF by RHH

That is one pulled ball and only two balls struck in excess of 100. Miley and Strom need to adjust.

Send video of his last two performances to Carlos Beltran and ask him to sort it out like he did with Yuli's swing.

Then offer him $50 mln per year to be our full time sign stealing, pitch tipping, guru.
