Things seem to be going quite well for Joe Biden

You just have to stand in awe of the majesty of an allegedly democratic political system which produces Joe Biden and Donald Trump as the two alternatives for chief executive.  So proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free.

have you ever been to philadelphia, ms?  i have.

Counterpoint: Some guys from Philadelphia MS once gave me home-made wine and tried to teach me phrases in Choctaw. I kept mispronouncing the word for "what" as the word for "fish". It was Monty-Pythonesque.

in 2002, after a long week, the sheriff in starkville escorted our bus to the city limits and told us never to come back (even though we had a signed contract with some shit bar there).  it was 3pm, and everybody's blood was up.  so i asked the driver where we could go to gamble, and still stay within our allowable miles driven for the day.  i remember saying, "biloxi or something?"  he took out and unfolded his gigantic map and said, "you ever heard of philadelphia, mississippi?"

i said, "no, take us there."

Free-ish.

Kind of.

Mitt Romney made the salt Lake City Olympics profitable.  Joe hasn't made anything profitable except his family.

You must not be aware of Joe's bankruptcy bill.   He brought a lot of profitability to the banking industry with that one.

Biden’s appeal is that he’s the front runner.

The reason he is the front runner is familiarity/name recognition.

Dude hasn’t done one cable news town hall, there’s a reason for that.

Bernie and Biden will be standing next to each other on the debate stage.  That should go well.

I just don’t understand the Democratic Party and this thread. You sh*t all over the current top candidate that currently has the best chance of defeating Trump and winning over independents. Why not just let it all play out over the primaries? If a better candidate emerges, he will lose the primary. Instead you are doing everything you can to destroy him, putting Trump one step closer to re-election. People were right when they said the Democrats constantly self-destruct.

If Joe Biden is such an awesome candidate, he should be able to overcome all the obstacles in the primary.

Trump is a joke and hasn’t gotten his approval numbers over 46%.

Over the last 20 years, playing it safe to the center has failed miserably and swinging for the fences has won.

2000 Gore/Lieberman played it safe...LOST... boom two wars, 9/11, absurd spending.

2004 Kerry/Edwards, played it safe...LOST...Recession, housing crisis.

2008 Obama/Biden, swung for the fences, crushed it.

2012 Romney/Ryan ... Played it safe... LOST

2016 Clinton/Kaine ... Played it safe... LOST

2016 Trump, swung for the fences, won.

2020 ?????

Eh. You could replace "swung for the fences" with "was the opposition party after a 2 term president" and it'd still be accurate. Or "was the most charismatic". 6 data points don't prove much.

Then you should agree polls don’t mean much right now either.   We have a primary PROCESS to evaluate candidates and chose the best one at the end.

Crowning the winner 18 month out by mindlessly supporting the front runner in the polls kinda undermines the whole process.

Don't disagree.

I don't think it's all polls though. I think one could make the argument that Biden is the most likely to win the rust belt, based on his story, background, charisma, penis, and skin color. And the rust belt wins you the Whitehouse. Not saying it's a valid reason to support him, but you probably wouldn't be wrong.

biden's biggest "pro" is ability to beat trump.

this does not mean he is the only candidate who can/would/will beat trump.

people have had issues confusing these two statements.  that will change over the next several months.

Yep. I think I've actually been convinced that Sanders would be a heavy favorite against Trump as well. I'd like to see a couple more of the top candidates make their own strong cases, so we have several good choices to pick from when primary season comes along. Personally because the two who I think are almost locks to beat him are my two least favorite (of the real candidates). But also just in general, the more good choices the better. Iron sharpens iron and whatnot.

the fact that candidates not named bernie and biden are running right with trump in current polling - with way less than 100% name recognition - is a huge problem for trump.

there are 6 debates between now and december.  a week from tomorrow, there will be a debate where biden will be on stage in between bernie and buttigieg.  best of luck, joe.

I don’t think Sanders can win those battleground rust belt states like Biden can. They think he’s too radical even though he tries to appeal to them. It’s all about perception.

I'm having a hard time getting my head around polling/sentiment right now. But I think there's a huge disconnect in my head because I pay a lot of attention and know who everyone is, and it seems foreign to not know who at least the top 6-7 candidates are. I'm assuming that the folks polling at 42-41 or so with Trump (Beto, Harris, etc.) are just not well known. Hard to remember not everyone are nerds like we are. It's also just because if someone called me and said "I'm going to read you a list of names and you tell me which you would vote for over Trump", I'd say "just put me down for all of them" and hang up.

I do hope you're right. I'm having a hard time making sense of the polls right now. Which is probably normal. We're 9 months out.

I'm starting to think there are enough poor white voters who have realized that Trump isn't helping them, that they'll move on to another option who is also a populist, but has more of a history with actually helping people like them. I mean really you just need the people who abstained because of the Hillary stigma to come back. I still think Biden is literally a lock to win those states, but I really don't want him to be our "best option".
