My performance rankings for the night:

1) As a supporter, I couldn't be happier with Warren's performance.   A+ night for her.  Hit all the right notes.

2) Pete was great, with the exception of his answer to the race question, which sounded pretty canned.   He's dead in the water for pres because he won't improve with POC, but he'd be a great VP.

3) Beto had a good night overall and is in the VP mix.

4) Sanders had some really good moments but was under the most fire and took some damage.  I think he took actually some hits for Warren.

5) Marianne Williamson is a joke of a candidate and going nowhere, but she actually had a great performance.   Some batshit crazy moments, but several fantastic moments too.

Everyone else sucked ass.   Klobuchar is boring as fuck and will give away the store to Republicans.  Delaney actually is a Republican, fuck him.  Hickenlooper seems like a nice guy, that's about it.   Bullock and Ryan offer literally nothing, and Trump would destroy their WWC voter act.

I was going to type out almost exactly this. When Beto calls it quits, I’ll probably become a card carrying member of team Liz. I would love a Liz/Pete ticket that really focused on the Midwest. This election comes down to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania and we can’t afford to lose any of them.

It then sets Pete up with the experience to be president for 8 years. I want 12-16 years of a dem in the White House to remind the republicans to never pull this shit again.

There is no reason not to swing for the fences on healthcare during the campaign unless you’re a spineless cunt bitch.

Yup. Go big or go home. Like in salary negotiations, ask for a ridiculous amount and negotiate down to what you really thought was reasonable.

If you're for Beto till he calls it quits, why are you for Warren/Pete over Warren/Beto when he does bow out?

I wouldn’t hate a Warren/Pete ticket. But I’m also a fan of Harris and Castro but they might be better suited for cabinet positions. Maybe Harris as Attorney General.

Too much NE. Gonna have to jettison one of the olds for either Beto or Butti.

Lol.  Who are we kidding.  Gonna be Biden and some spare to be named later.

1. Midwestern ties.

2. Setting Pete up to be the next president with experience, his current biggest drawback.

3. I get that two whites on the dem ticket isn’t great but we can show that we are a big tent with a woman and a gay. Both would be huge strides if they won. Remember, Obama was against gay marriage 10 years ago.

4. Warren is all policy all the time. Pete is articulate enough to get out there and explain the message in a way that people can understand. Beto would just seem like a weird hype guy in a rap video.

I’m more out on Harris than any other candidate in this race. She seems like a snake and is a human weather vane when it comes to policy positions. Castro has grown on he and done better than expected.

I hope it's Auntie Liz, but history tells me it's gonna be the moderate.

I would typically agree, I just can’t figure out who it would be. It’s not going to be Biden. Harris is next up but she showed her ass after getting a bump after the first debate. Maybe she can overcome that but she seemed really inexperienced.

Hope Pete sees his numbers go up.  I could definitely live with Warren.

I didn't read the last few pages but I'm assuming everyone is wondering WTF CNN was doing?  'Let's ask complicated questions, sometimes multiple at a time, and then give 20 seconds to answer!'

Obama wasn't the moderate choice vs Hillary in 2008 though.

It’s all about messaging and your organic digital operation these days.  Biden is terrible at both. He has name recognition and the corporate media but he’s boring as hell.  My magic 8-ball says “outlook not so good” for uncle Joe.

No need to wonder about what CNN was doing. They were setting the stage for future attacks on social welfare programs.

--------------------------
And so the moderators peppered the candidates with questions that were evidently designed to produce bad answers in the short format. Question after question was framed up from the ideological perspective of a Heritage Foundation intern or otherwise crafted as a gotcha to generate a 15-second clip for Republican attack ads down the line.

That's a good point, but he's way more moderate than Bernie or Liz.

No doubt.   And a few years ago, I never would have thought either could ever win the presidency.   But we live in crazy times, with Donald Trump as president and the GOP become an openly white supremacist party.   The old rules no longer apply.

Tell that to these beltway clowns on CNN.

No doubt that everyone involved with that CNN debate failed the candidates and viewing public. It’s a disgrace, but then you remember that Trump being re-elected is the dream scenario for them.

AKA "Doing their job"

Although I'm sure many would have preferred if Bernie had an uninterrupted 30 minutes to espouse on the utopia that America will be with open borders, free everything, and no tradeoffs!

So the “no first use” nuclear policy sure did come out of left field considering impeachment and the Mueller Report got ZERO discussion.

“No first use” on nukes is one of those “are you fucking serious?!? How is this not a thing yet?!!” going back 25+ years.

hard to believe this is summer 2019, feels like a couple of months before the summer 2020 DNC.  Some olds i speak with are solidly Biden and he's improved since the nasty Harris attack. It's his to lose.

That potato inspires no one. He will flame out albeit with rabid approval from the 70+ crowd.

They want 1 and 2 in each round to fight. Didn’t get it tonight. They’ll get more than enough tomorrow.

eh, i didn't see it that way.  when they say, "night 1, bernie vs liz" i took it as "who will win the night?", not that they would get into a knife fight with each other, that's dumb.  they're 2 of the favorites, they're obviously going to be pitted against each other.

i'm not the only one here who's been dreaming of a liz/pete ticket for months now.  it makes too much sense.

and a debate between pence and pete would dominate the news cycle for a week (which is a week longer than most vp debates).

This was the biggest shock to me last night. The questions really were Republican talking points.

These debates with 10 people and 30 second answers are a waste of time. And the candidates have to stop with the personal stories that can’t be fully told in 30 seconds.  Save those stories for the rallies because you’re not going to connect with a debate audience in a few seconds.

“We need Medicare for all because i know an unfortunate guy, Pete, with a great family, who has ALS and $9k monthly medical bills.  And pete has great private insurance.”

Pete actually doesn’t have great private ins if that is the whole story.  Don’t most plans have out of pocket annual maximums?  And while I’m sorry he has ALS, we shouldn’t enact a national plan to assist Pete.

It's amazing how much time is spent on Republican voters at a Democratic debate. This party for some reason is scared to death of wielding power and any backlash that comes with it. The media is a big part of the problem.

Probably doesn’t help that Democrats are basically waterboarded by the media to explain how to pay for their policies but no one ever asks Republicans “how do you pay for a giant wall and also anything if you plan to cut revenues via tax cuts?”

Good point.  Since the Right says that tax cuts pay for themselves, I don’t know why the Left doesn’t say that increased access to healthcare pays for itself because healthy people earn more income and miss less work.  It’s a point that’s can’t really be disproved especially on a debate stage.

The millionaire tax and going after the 1% is such an obvious home run. It's a slam dunk for the left and most centrists. And the idiot spectrum running from the WWC to even the hardcore Trumpers will like it because they love when other people are punished and brought down to their level (it's why they love anti-immigrant and anti-technology Trump).

It's such an easy win that it makes total sense that the Democrats will ignore it in favor of talking about reparations.
