  1. LIbertarians crack me up. Take a a self evident factual proposition, divorce from reality, reinsert into idealized hypothetical alternative and voila! A better world. No fucking shit the lockdown causes a GDP decline. That's not what a lockdown "does" that's what a lockdown "is". And I discussed that topic extensively in real life terms here. And clearly I was overly optimistic about the 2Q which almost certainly will reflect a GDP decline of greater than 30%, primarily due to the issues around getting stimulus to small business. You can't take the lockdown out of the pandemic. The lockdown is a strategy for velocity control that was implemented in the absence of other strategies and a failure of planning and preparedness. Also, the way you consistently use the word "initial" is curious. Other countries had better results with shorter lockdowns and more success. The differences: 1) They locked down earlier 2) They had a consistent, data driven, apolitical message from their leaders 3) They had better buy-in and compliance (see #2 above) Because here's the thing - you can use the word "initial" to weasel in or out of your point, but the fact is that the GDP decline is not a function of the inception of the lockdown but the scale and length of the lockdown. The better we manage it and the sooner we start, the shorter the lockdown would be and the smaller the decline. * And yet you continued to type. Impressive. ** Because criticism is somehow an excuse for inaction? It comes with the job. When did we normalize this idea that it was OK for leaders to whine their way our of accountability? *** It was in the President's daily briefings over a dozen times in January and February, among many other things. I particularly enjoy this gem: **** Again, It was likely uncontainable. But the scale of both suffering and economic damage is a man-made disaster that is a direct result of mismanagement by the federal government.

  2. The majority of the economic damage thus far is because we waited too long to quarantine and we didn't have a plan for it, we don't have a plan to come out of it, and we have a blithering idiot at the wheel. Markets don't like uncertainty. Case in point: the drop of about 10k points happened during the initial uncertainty and inaction, and since then, there's been a rally of about 5k points during the quarantine. So you can't blame it all on the quarantine when some of it was worse before. The unemployment hit was also greatly exacerbated by the president's inaction back in February and March. He delayed economic aid to small businesses because he pretended nothing was wrong. And the fact that we've had to quarantine longer, also directly caused by the president's inaction in February and March, has made the economy worse on every possible front. Your Idiot-In-Chief tried to ignore the problem because he thought admitting there was a problem would hurt the economy. And he, of course, because he's a bumbling fuck-up, hurt the economy worse than being honest and taking the necessary steps in a timely manner would have. If you think this economic chaos was unavoidable and is therefore not the president's fault, then tell me: why are our economic woes worse than those in China and Europe, just like our death totals? That ain't a coincidence. Your boy fucked up. Bigly. Yugely. Stop defending him on this or you're as big an idiot as he is.

  3. well we thought he was going to use the shutdown to actually do something. we bought him a lot of time, and then he stuffed it all in his pocket with a hole in the bottom. but yes, let's blame the people who supported not dying.

  4. Just had my first test done at a City of Austin drive-through site a couple of hours. I've performed the test plenty of times on people and had an idea of how shitty it felt, but even that didn't prepare me for just how shitty it feels. Would not recommend for recreation. Waiting to receive a call from my hospital's Occupational Health department to schedule my second test. Just to note: it was 100x easier to get a test through the City than it was through my hospital. The second test will have to be no earlier than tomorrow at 11:30am. I'm less fatigued than I have been, but I also zonked myself out last night. Still breathing okay and fever is down to 99.6F which, while technically not a fever, is about two degrees higher than I usually run. In a cruel twist of irony, the 3M half-face respirator with N100 filters that I was finally able to order for myself arrived this morning. Not that I would be ~allowed to wear it outside of AGPs.

  5. I believe that some leaders in some places around the world did poor jobs of handling the pandemic and caused harm. Simultaneously I believe China should get fucked right up their intellectual property stealing, bat eating, human rights abusing, pandemic hiding asses. That may be way out there, tinfoil hat, sasquatch loch ness monster type stuff, but I think both thoughts can exist in the same universe.

  8. there's a lot to like in this long, and extraordinarily accurate post. but i'm gonna pull this quote, because it drives me the most insane. if you get into an argument with your friend or your wife or your sibling or parent, you can absolutely use the "well i didn't know about it either", to varying levels of success, even if it's not true. it's a handy and effective excuse, and i've used it a number of times. i would expect it a little less from local government. almost never from state government, and zero times from the president. for a guy who acts like a king or a dictator, and proclaims he has total authority, he can't even pretend to be all-knowing, even when he actually claims to be "all-knowing". anybody in his position should have the harry truman "the buck stops here" as a motivational poster behind the resolute desk, even if it's just decoration. even when your intel fails, and your soldiers miss important information, you still lie and take responsibility. that's the job. being the boss means when it's your fault, you take responsibility, and when it's not your fault, you take responsibility. yes, i'm quite certain that i've read that somewhere once. gun to my head, i think he didn't really know or realize the seriousness of the threat, and here's why. first off, yes, i realize to a certain extent, i'm "letting him off the hook" but it's not that simple. i think he didn't know about it because (a) he doesn't read important daily briefings, (b) he replaced the people in charge of bringing that shit to his attention, and (c) he replaced the people that grab him, shake him, and say "hey dude, we need to move on this". he's the president. he's only one man. watching a couple west wing reruns tells me that even working an 18-20 hour day doesn't give you enough time to be properly briefed and educated on everything you need to know about. so you hire good people, and you pay attention. he has failed spectacularly with both tasks. instead he spends his day learning as much as possible about his favorite subject - himself. he watches tv and he tweets. i do believe he never sleeps. i do believe he's always "working". but "working" to him is tuning in to all the cable news shows and bitching about them to his advisers, his cabinet, and his twitter followers. so in short (too late), i don't believe he's acted this way out of some sort of bond-villain mustache-twirling menacing laughter need to be evil. i don't think he knew, and then decided not to act, in order to save the economy or send people to their death. i think he did what he does best - he ignored all warning signs and intel, and hoped for the best, because for citizens like donald trump, "things usually just work out". unfortunately for us, for presidents like donald trump, sometimes they have to actually be the president. and he fucking sucks at doing that, because he never bothered to learn how.

  11. it'd be like finding out yamamoto's battle plan in early summer of 1941, watching it happen, claiming it would all die down, claiming that further strikes on guam, wake, the phillipines, the aleutians, etc., were fake news and that it would all die down like a miracle, watching indonesia and australia get overrun, complaining that that's a hoax, and then demanding of the governors of california, oregon, and washington that west coast ports open as japanese gunboats steam just offshore, all while denying their requests for guns, shells, and men for shore batteries.

  16. You can blame Trump for a lot, but the economic disaster in its current state is almost totally due to the initial shutdown that 99% of people supported. This is like saying the Holocaust was really the fault of a few Nazis that decided to exterminate some Jews, Hitler had little to do with it. There never would have been a shutdown if we contained the virus abroad. We didn’t even attempt to do that. We knew it was coming, we knew it could be bad, Trump called it a hoax. He’s responsible for the consequences of said hoax.

  18. @Carl Spackler Many here have seen and heard this, so apologies to them for the re-run. Alright, my dad was Steve Perron. He wrote Francine about a girl he had a crush on in Junior High (lyric - "Francine just turned thirteen, she's my angelic teenage queen..."). My understanding from other band members and my mom (dad died of an overdose when I was 6 yrs old) was that Bill Ham had inked Gibbons and the fellas to an album. They wanted to release a 45 rpm from it and had a song in mind for the "A" side, but wanted a "B" side. My dad's guitarist, Kenny Cordray, had broken his arm in a motorcycle wipeout and The Children and ZZ (I think they were Moving Sidewalks at that moment) were supposed to play a gig together. Dad told Billy that he needed a guitarist to stand in for Kenny and Billy answered the call. Apparently, either Ham was there at that gig, or someone close who he trusted was, and the light bulb went off when The Children (with Gibbons on guitar) played Francine. He told Billy to ask dad if they could record it for the new album. Dad agreed, they recorded it, and it became the other side of that 45 rpm and the first gold single off the album, which I think makes it ZZTop's first gold single. Billy is on the liner notes as a writer as he added his own solo to the song, but the lyrics were written by Dad. Cordray added all the rest of the guitar. Here's a couple of pics starting with the song's first draft complete with coffee stains from Jim's Diner on Broadway and 410 in SA...

  20. You are dumb or a liar. Shit was shutting itself down before the official shutdown even happened. Festivals, sporting events, schools, SXSW, ski resorts, parks, churches, resturants. People stopped going out. I remember well as I went from flying for a spring break trip to driving to I won't eat in a restaurant when I go to _welp there is no where to go- in a few weeks time. That in of itself fucked the economy. I'm in construction and people stopped wanting workers in thier home before any lockdown. Reasonable fear and halt in luxury spending fucked us especially since we so rely on travel and discretionary spending for so much of the economy. I knew Texas was fucked back in February absent any lockdown.

  21. I think I can blame Trump for the economic disaster because he didn't have a plan or response team in place for something pretty much everyone could see coming. Yes, that's right. It's May 23rd and I believe he STILL doesn't have a plan. So, yeah, that's on him.

  29. my mother received her $1200 CARES payment 2 weeks ago. my deceased mother, who's been dead going on 18 months. smartly, i did not cash it as i felt certain someone, somewhere will figure out how to correct this mistake. yesterday i received another letter from the treasury, as i opened it i felt sure it would give me instructions disposing of the check. nope, it was a letter from Trump basically saying 'you're welcome'. so i guess i'll sit on this check a while longer. neither my husband nor i got one ourselves (not a bad problem to have, i know)... i'll be tracking this story...if somehow they end up not even trying to get this money back, i'd like to simply endorse it and send the whole thing to Biden for President 😁

  32. It sounds like we both agree it's impossible to have any level of in-depth discussion about this crisis without it becoming overtly political. What we are watching unfold is quite literally why governments exist: to protect the health and well-being of its citizenry. Every aspect of this is political...from the messaging put out by officials, to the data reported, to the public policy responses that are made or not made as a reaction to the public health and economic calamity occurring...it's all political, so this thread is also inherently political. but then that echo chamber gets disrupted and a handful of mouth breathers complain about 'politics'. it's laughable. oh my bad. a few posts ago you had mentioned your voting bonafides. i assumed that was because you wanted to me a point and in doing so, you labeled me as a partisan. so i responded to let you know a bit about my voting history. but if your original attempt at doing that was pointless, then i apologize for responding in kind.

  35. "Pussy Riley" ? What a terrible fucking take. Lots of reasons to hate Lincoln Riley, but he's not a pussy for encouraging player safety by delaying on-campus workouts. States are attempting to gradually open up and see what happened to two domestic Ford Motor plants that opened up last Monday...they had to shut back down by Wednesday. Start paying the players hazard pay (or any pay for that matter) and then expect them to show up risking their health.
