  2. As promised, a follow up to "mobile cup cover for music festivals." So this weekend my wife is on the phone with her business partner, while the rest of the family is putzing around the house. I'm not really paying attention until I hear " ... like a prophylactic." So my ears perk up a bit and I hear "mumble, mumble ... Shark Tank ..." Now she has my full attention and I zero in on the conversation like the Bionic Woman and - I shit you not - she says "Do we know anyone with contacts to Mark Cuban?" Phone conversation ends and ours begins: Me: What was that about? Wife: The idea you think will never happen. Me: That's not fair, I think it's a great idea (trying to suppress uncontrollable laughter). Wife: Well good, because Shelly (her business partner) is already in contact with an industrial designer in San Francisco. She's going to look over my sketch and come up with some ideas, maybe even do a 3D printing. Me: Sketch? Wife: Yeah, I drew something up, want to see it? (Opens notebook) Me: Wow, interesting. So who's going to buy this thing again? Wife: To start, concerned parents. You may not remember this because you weren't really listening the first time we discussed this, but it's to prevent some asshole from putting roofies into the drinks of unsuspecting girls' drinks at these music festivals. Here look (shows me Youtube video of some asshole putting something into the drink of an unsuspecting girl at a music festival). Me: But won't the kids just toss them when their parents give it to them? If it comes from the parents they won't use it. Wife: Well then we'll sell them to the music festivals. And bars too. Ever heard of liability? *Previously I wrote a fictitious rant from wife about putting logos on these things, and their environmental friendliness. Well, I fucking know my wife like the back of my hand and right here she launches into EXACTLY THAT, except the logos are now "branding opportunities" and the cover won''t be plastic, like those dumb lids.* Wife: Think of it like a stack of band aids. You just peel it off and put it over the cup. Then just toss it when you're done. Me: Nodding my head, give her a thumbs up. Wife: Fuck you. You just watch, this is going to be big. Skip to yesterday, the Amazon lids show up. I considered going the "prototype" route. I have a garage workshop that might as well be Area 51 to my wife, but she's too smart to fall for the whole "look what I made for you" deal. So I just left it on the kitchen counter and held my breath. She walked in, took a look at it, kind of stunned. After a few seconds she looked back to me and said "That isn't disposable." I said nothing. You could see all sorts of thoughts were running through her brain and she said "Wait, did you get that for me?" Me: Yep , found it on Amazon. Wife: Oh honey, thank you! (gives me a kiss) Me: (shocked, not expecting this response). Of course! Wife: See? It's a real product that works! (she takes a picture and sends it to her business partner). But ours will be different. Cheaper. More effective. I'm telling you it's going to be big. So with that, I leave you until my wife appears on Shark Tank. Thank you NW Buck for the link.

  3. This is very wrong and we've covered this before. President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho saw, recognized and reacted to a real crisis, demonstrating both deft negotiating skills with other branches of government and political courage by identifying the SMARTEST PERSON IN THE WORLD and delegating extraordinary authority. In this way he showed deep understanding that his role as leader was to marshall our forces towards a common goal while enlisting and celebrating the skills and achievements of the best among us that they might inspire others. If Camacho were president today we would be tackling climate change, healthcare and our crumbling infrastructure, and reaffirming the importance of knowledge, expertise and objective reality in our culture. How can you compare this president to that?

  5. He's the perfect president for the United States in 2019. He's fat off of fast food, pretends he makes more than he does, and does nothing but watch television. Look at what our founding fathers and early presidents wrote about and compare that with Trump. They were able to cite Rousseau, Blackstone, Plutarch, and Cicero without any problem and now we're stuck with a guy watching Fox News 24/7...fuck us and what we've become.

  6. This episode won't age well. It was a visual spectacle and advanced the necessary plot points, but it was a massive departure from previous GoT episodes. Here's just one detail among the multitude, some which have been mentioned already. Let's look at some major character death scenes and see if you can spot the difference between them and the ones from Ep 3: Deaths before S8: - Jon Snow: in a surprise twist, murdered by his friends. Dies silently while his blood darkens the snow. - Oberyn Martell: In a surprise twist, murdered by a nearly defeated Mountain. Dies screaming. - Rickon Stark: In an mild twist, murdered by Ramsay Bolton. Dies gasping and clutching for air while Jon Snow watches just a few feet away. - Ygritte: In a twist, killed by Olly in battle. Dies in Jon Snow's arms. - Robb/Talisa/Catelyn: In a huge twist, murdered by the Freys at the Red Wedding. All die horrible deaths. - Ned Stark: In a huge twist (the first of many), sentenced to death by King Joffery. Dies worried about his kids. - Shireen: In a twist, burned to death by her parents. Dies screaming. - Littlefinger: In a twist, sentenced to death by the Starks. Dies choking after Arya cuts his throat. - Hodor: In a huge twist, killed by wights while holding a door to let Bran escape. Dies a horrible death as he's torn slowly to pieces. - And so many more. Tommen, Myrcella, Renly, Balon, Ramsay, Roose. You get the point. Now let's look at S8 deaths: Ep 1 - Lord Ned Umber: In a twist, murdered and turned into a wight by the Night King. Dies screaming when Beric burns him back to death. Ep 3 - Edd: Killed in battle by a wight while heroically saving Sam. - Beric: Killed in battle by wights while heroically saving Arya. - Lyanna Mormont: Killed in battle by a wight giant after heroically stabbing it in the eye with a dragonglass blade. - Jorah Mormont: Killed in battle by wights after heroically saving Daenerys. - Theon: Killed by the Night King after heroically defending Bran. (edited to add him. Guess I forgot this one already) It's clear. This isn't the GoT that existed for the first 7 seasons. The first three episodes of season 8 have completely subverted everything the previous seasons have established. The overarching menace of the Night King, which Jon Snow harped on about for years, was defeated in a single night. Instead of tragic awful deaths we get glorious hero deaths. Wars are no longer simply miserable endeavors full of unintended consequences and multitudes suffering for the selfish desires of a few. Now they're heroic and virtuous. And to top it off, Cersei was right all along and now she has the larger army after Dany and the Northerners did the dirty work for her. This episode was just a traditional tv battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. The only thing surprising about it was how quickly the evil was defeated.

  8. The stall was just for dramatic effect for viewers. I'm not even sure it was much of a stall because it all appeared to be shown in slow motion. The NK wasn't going to win, had he ran up to Bran and tried to immediately stab him Arya just jumps out a few seconds earlier, and that would have been a ridiculous scene. It is a fucking TV show. You've got to build in some entertainment factor. If you are in the minority that isn't entertained by anything other than realistic battle tactics and siege defense strategies in the mythical land that contains magic, dragons, and zombies, then you shouldn't be watching this show.

  13. I imagine it went something like this: Riley opens his fat mouth about watching the NFL Draft, says his recruiting pitch is asking recruits whether they've watched it the last two years. Saban calls up Sanders and just says "Well? Did you?" Sanders flips. The end.

  14. You are laughably wrong. Obama not letting all the country's automotive manufacturing go down the tubes, thereby stopping a ripple effect of closed suppliers and dependent businesses (everything from lunch counters to raw product suppliers of suppliers), is an ode to successful Democratic economic policies. The ship was righted. We did not lose our auto industry because O did not listen to morons who wanted to 'burn it down and let the free marker build it up'. That is the same kind of stupid as trickle down. And yet, a gullible base eats that nonsense up. Sad.

  16. Holy hell people will defend this show to the death. It's still very good but I can't believe anyone wouldn't admit the writing has dropped off since the fat man stalled out. Still pumped for these last few episodes but it's not hitting a crescendo like, say, Breaking Bad did. Just my shitty opinion.

  17. The call did make me feel a little more sympathetic to her, but that doesn't remove her culpability to me. Shooting people has consequences. Even cops need to understand that. This could have easily been avoided had she not approached the situation with a shoot-first mentality.

  18. I mean, this. People are saying it was over too fast or the NK was defeated too easily? Dude, all of humanity was lost. The army of the dead was prime Mike Tyson invincible and they were cruising to a first round KO. The only way to win was to get a single, perfect assassin to the NK himself. In the end, it was his hubris that got them all killed, a classic motif in history and in fiction. It ended the only way it could have. They could have done a 4-week battle where every single person but Dany and Cersei died, then those two had a lesbian sex scene before fighting to the death naked in a tub of jello and some of y'all would be like, meh, I was expecting awesomer.

  20. Bran is perhaps the most frustrating part of the entire series. We’re led to believe his role as the 3ER is critically important, yet that’s never explained or reinforced in any way, so he just seems pointless. He spent the entire episode warged into a raven for what purpose? As a viewer, I don’t understand why anyone needs there to be a 3ER in the first place. So he can crawl into a tree and remember shit and never share it with anyone? How does that help the world? Seems like the Citadel is pretty good at recording history and the world would go on just fine without a 3ER. I wonder if GRRM had a better plan for Bran’s character or if we’re simply running into a LOST situation in which shit was slung against the wall for the sake of being weird and mysterious, only to have it fizzle out in the end.

  24. I didn't have time to watch it until last night but I can't get past the Night King choking. That's a Bill Buckner / Ernest Byner / Blake Gideon level choke job. You're about to end humanity -- your one fucking purpose for gods knows how many thousand years -- you got the cripple one on one with thousands of your boys at your back, and then you let yourself get blindsided by some jumpy little bitch with quick hands and a switch blade? Biggest choke since Oilers v. Bills. And for those of you complaining that not enough tier 1 players bit the dust in the battle and inconsistencies with the rest of the series... First, they killed the fucking NK. Granted there is no emotional attachment to him, but it's not like he wasn't the force behind half of the plot line in the entire series. If he isn't tier one enough for you, I don't know what to say. Secondly, forgive me if my memory is bad but I don't recall a ton of the main characters dying during the huge battle scenes. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody, but other than Ygritte, I can't really remember a main character dying in an actual battle scene. Typically, they just pile up a massive carnage of bodies and the main guys seem to survive. To that end, dying in battle isn't consistent with the hallmark surprising deaths in the show, it's more par for the course. That's what people do in those battles. They die. Where's the shock and drama in that? How anti-climactic would it have been for Jamie or Brienne to get killed by a horde of random zombies? As far as predictions go... I'm thinking that there is some variation of the Mountain taking out the Hound and Arya ends up killing the Mountain. Or the Mountain takes out Arya and the Hound takes out the mountain.

  37. I lurk in the alcoholic thread because I want to gain perspective on how the mind of an addict works. I don't agree with everything in there, but I don't post there because I try to stay in my lane. And I do have an appreciation for the AA program. I've read the Big Book several times. I don't post about this, but I have an ex-wife who hasn't seen our 9- and 6-year old kids in 5 years because she can't get the needle out of her arm. So I appreciate this thread. Troph, Buff and the rest of y'all, I just wanna say I'm hearing you loud and clear. When you've already dealt with a shit ton of selfish, destructive behavior from an addict, the last thing you want to hear from them is "I messed up, but I don't care if you accept my amends because I'm doing this for me." To the person who has been offended, it really just sounds like more of the same selfish behavior. Saying you're sorry when you have wronged someone - and actually meaning it - that's just part of not being a shitty person. That's why most of us teach our kids from an early age to apologize when they hurt someone. It's just the right thing to do, regardless of the steps. If you're apologizing to make yourself feel better and give yourself confidence that you're lacking, that seems like the wrong reason. Those might be benefits, but they shouldn't be the reason you do it.
