  1. That’s how I spent my Saturday afternoon. 18 years old. College freshman. One of my daughter’s high school classmates. This was the SECOND of her classmates to take his/her own life. Telling her over Facetime from almost 2,000 miles away when we got the news…not being to hold her as she cried in anguish….that sucked. The church was full. People from his parents’ generation. People – kids, really – from his generation. Their presence killed me. They were regular, odd, unique, some with green hair, some dressed perfectly for church. So many of these were the "different" kids -- the artists, who feel so deeply. The unusual, who don't fit into convention. And so many of them just wracked with sobs and grief. At every quiet moment, cries both soft and strong echoed off the walls. So many of them who were just like him. So many who are loved and supported, but don’t always feel it in the moment. I sat next to my son, who is having his own struggles with being that age, and how to feel, and being overwhelmed and depressed, and the stark terror of being a parent sat in my bones. I just want to keep him alive. I can’t tell you how sad it all felt. How sad I felt. How discouraging it was, to have lost a light. How helpless it makes us all feel. The moment – the communal moment of grief, of shared love for one who was lost, and of love for one another, whether we knew each other before or not – was powerful, and important. All we really have is each other. Please, love each other. Be kind. Those are active verbs. There are 100 moments in a day when we can choose apathy or even callousness/cruelty over kindness. Choose kindness. Some of the most profound moments in my life are moments when someone showed me kindness when I most needed it. I know I’m not alone in that respect. Be kind. Please. It matters.

  2. Herman: Any advice, Mack? Mack: Detonate the recruiting class on your way out. Set the program back as far as you can as you leave while they still have to pay you. Be spiteful and petty and sulk and always remember that it's about you, not them. Maybe stop slamming your head into stuff. That won't inspire anyone. It just makes you look stupid.

  8. It's so sad it's funny. Herman is still using elementary school psychology tricks on college football players. And has no idea why his players hate him. With the current mood on the team the rest of the OL isn't going to think "we're a team and this will teach us shared responsibility and really teach Parker a lesson." They're going to think "our coaches are jackasses."

  9. Why do we all act like LHN duties are so laborious? all coaches have: coaches show press conferences Big time programs have: mic’d up access to practice via ESPN etc near as I can see the only extra deal from LHN is the rewind show. Herman also freed time up for himself by cutting out the preseason banquet. The LHN is not some big lodestone around a coaches neck. In fact I’d argue it’s an incredible benefit in terms of showing all the cool shit:Lake day at Duval’s house, pool party at Herman’s crib, locker room features etc

  13. If Tom Herman was my client here are the talking points I would make him commit to memory or at least write down to stay on point. He is failing at the most basic part of his job which is to be a salesman for the program. It's especially more important when you are losing: 1. We can get to 8 wins with a victory Friday and a bowl win, right now that is our focus and our message to the team. We cant hit our goals obviously, but we can set the tone for the off-season starting Friday. Friday is our most important game for many reasons. 2. This season has not played out like we wanted, obviously, but we have to keep driving and working hard 3. Injuries have played a major role, no doubt, but we every program has to deal with them, we cant sulk or make it an excuse; we have to overcome. That is why its critical we develop depth and make recruiting a priority. Recruiting is on everybody; how we handle this last game and our bowl game will set the tone 4. We... everyone, fans, media, coaches have to stay positive and focused on the long term plan; we have a process and a plan and its going to take time; the last thing we need is division and apathy. I understand losing can create a negative vibe, but we're staying positive as an organization. 5. We have to instill discipline, no excuses for penalties and missed tackles; those are mental and physical errors that have to be fixed and that's what we're working on. We've had critical errors at the worst possible times. The guys need to fix it; the coaches need to fix it, it has to hurt to improve, and the team is hurting , but now is when we need to come together and get a victory. 6. We had 10 wins last year, and we can get to 8 this year; no its not where we want to be based on where we finished last year; but 8 wins is something to build on considering we left at least 1 win on the field (ISU). 7 At Texas we expect to compete for Championships and we didnt get it done this year, but the future is bright; we have a lot coming back next year. Tom needs to learn leadership 101. Effective communication is, in order, tone, body language and then words. The public perception he is putting off is terrible. He needs CDC to sit him down and talk about public speaking and the message he is putting off. To come that press conference and essentially wing it is off putting at best. He is not prepared and its obvious. I guess $5M a year makes him think he is bullet proof.

  16. Some of ya'll need to stop living in the past, man. You sound like Nebraska reminiscing about the Tom Osborne good old days. And UT isn't far off from becoming almost as irrelevant as Nebraska. Shit has changed in college football in the last 20 plus years. The formula for a blue blood program like UT to recover from a run of down years has been spelled out clearly.

  18. It’s a hard thing. Sorting through things personally, the helpless feeling, guilt that I still have my great kids, fear that I might not have them tomorrow, not knowing what to say to my sister and her husband. That’s difficult but pales in comparison to what they must be going through. They’re determined to make something positive come from it. Last Friday would have been his 19th birthday, and some dear friends of theirs gave a birthday party for close friends and family, which was sad and wonderful all at the same time. Saturday was the memorial, and yesterday we siblings and spouses all had a meal together, sort of to make sure everyone was doing ok, and share some good memories. That was when I had those enchiladas I posted. Anyway, the whole thing resulted in a positive change for me, which is I will no longer shy away from discussions about those “weird” kids, whether gay or trans or depressed or whatever, because it’s uncomfortable. I’ll stand up for them and advocate where I can. Because in the end they are like you and me, they are sons and daughters, friends, classmates... They are human. That was made abundantly clear.

  20. Why can’t we have Urban? So, he had Aaron Hernandez and Zach Smith. Mack had: Robert Joseph, Brandon Collins, Erik Hardeman, Andre Jones and Cleve fucking Bryant. We are no better than anyone else and the fact that half of our BMD’s tried to get Saban proves that. The other half need to pull their heads from their asses and shitcan Herman today.

  25. The House conducting their hearings and putting Trump shit on blast says the experiment hasn't failed. The Democrats in the House staring him down over his little border hedge says the experiment hasn't failed. The various setbacks in courts that Trump has experienced says the experiment hasn't failed. Trump's cronies that are doing prison time, along with various state AGs looking to run a train on Trump when he's out of office says the experiment hasn't failed. The first-time voters who came out last year say the experiment hasn't failed. And while it may piss many of us off, Republican Senators willing to save his ass from getting the boot are doing exactly what they were elected to do - act like Republicans. They aren't breaking any laws in saving his ass when it comes time to vote. They are accountable to us, if we as a nation choose to vote in the right people, with the right ideas. We are lazy as a whole, no doubt, when it comes to politics, and yes, pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered, but that is 100% on us. I know, I know, that nice warm bath looks inviting Hugo. Maybe you want to slide into it, play with the razor blade a little bit. But we aren't there yet. So climb out, dry off, and get back to whatever it is you do for a living, or for recreation, or whatever you like to do with your time. We have a helluva long way to go, and no matter what Trump does, when he loses a year from now, he's done in January of 2021. He can't order Justice Roberts to swear him in a second time when he loses. And he sure as shit can't be pardoned from state crimes when the states come after his ass. And Trump knows it. Not a day goes by, where we don't catch a glimpse of the fear and paranoia lurking in whatever makes up Trump's brain. He is not a man confident that he will leave office and not be charged by one or more state attorney generals. Hell, he is not even confident he will make it through impeachment unscathed. Every time he attacks impeachment, the Democrats, etc., it's not about getting independents and Dems on his side by showing them the error of their ways, it's because he's scared shitless that he's losing Republicans, both the voting public, and more importantly, those in Congress, and he's trying to bring them to heel, to make sure that they better have his back.

  35. Just sent: Dear sir, I know I don’t count for much, because I contribute and buy season tickets under my Dad and Mom, who are too elderly to attend many games...that said: I assume you agree that there is ZERO evidence that Tom Herman has any ability to be the coach that the Texas Football program needs, and has done absolutely NOTHING to deserve keeping his job. His team is an unmitigated failure on the field. He is almost universally despised by the fans. And he shows no signs of understanding the massive failure of his term to date. The predictable and typical “next step” is for him to fire most if not all of his staff. But you know as well as I do that is just kicking the can down the road. That move NEVER works, and is nothing more than a sign of desperation from a coach that knows he’s DONE in a year, maybe two. This isn’t Little League where “trying hard” counts for anything. I and others have to work our butts off and SUCCEED and be effective to earn the money we are paid. We also must produce results, and be accountable for falling short. Nowhere else in society is arrogance, non -performance and mediocrity rewarded with “untouchable” status, contract extensions and guaranteed millions and millions of dollars. Bevo Boulevard and LCL are neat, and the South Endzone looks like it will be awesome. All of it will be nothing more than a Monument to Apathy and Mediocrity unless and until Tom Herman and his Not Ready for Prime Time staff are fired and sent back to the minor leagues. Thanks in advance for making the tough decisions that need to be made to get our program “back”.
