  1. It's intensely stupid and indicative of a man who eats his steak well-done with ketchup. They singled out the federal courthouse in Austin as particularly lacking in aesthetic appeal. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, here it is: I practice there routinely, and really like it. A few observations: 1) The parcel of land on which it sits would be too small for an impressive neoclassical structure that still met all of the security restrictions imposed on new federal courthouses after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building. It would just look ridiculous. 2) The courthouse uses the cut limestone that is common in Austin architecture, and it fits very nicely with the surrounding buildings and the Balcones Escarpment beyond. A giant marble edifice would look out-of-place and alien. And frankly, I think that sends the wrong architectural message--our federal government shouldn't sit in an alien structure. 3) It might surprise people to know this, but lawyers and judges like sunlight, too. And this provides more sunlight than just about any courthouse I've been in. It has beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows that still comply with the security guidelines. 4) For those concerned with the majesty of the law, the courtrooms are very impressive. They're double-height, so each floor alternates in floorplan to accommodate the courtrooms from the floor below. And, as noted, they allow for plenty of natural light. Honestly--there are some real architectural triumphs over the last thirty years in federal building construction, here and right around the world. The Moakley Federal Building on Boston Harbor does an exquisite job of blending into the harbor while, at the same time, providing great views from inside and sending an architectural message of transparency: The new federal courthouse in Los Angeles works perfectly with its surroundings, and in particular provides a striking contrast to the Gehry design just a couple blocks away. The embassy in Berlin is also part of this program. It sits on Pariser Platz, next to the Brandenburg Gate where the embassy was located before World War II. During the Cold War, the site was in no-man's land. Now it has a building that is modern but still reflective of its surroundings: So yeah--this directive is stupid.

  3. I honestly thought America could not be stupid enough to fall for the vapid, conceited reality TV host. I was wrong. I guess you are laughing at me, Helobius. That's fine, but I'm going to do more than just cast my vote and shut up. To me, that's what got us here...that sort of complacency.

  9. Sanders may win this (though his margin keeps getting ever-so-slightly smaller), but this is quietly catastrophic for him. He won New Hampshire with better than 60% in 2016. He's going to get less than 30% this time. He didn't bring in new voters; there's no evidence of a surge of young voters. And it's not like that other 30% stayed with a progressive and went to Warren. They went to Buttigieg and . . . fuck--I don't even know. The biggest problem with Sanders is that he's not expanding his base. He's got his supporters. But he's not building beyond that. As Biden and Warren sluff off support, those people are going to Buttigieg and Klobuchar. Very few are going to Sanders.

  11. Before you lose your minds, this is Jimmy. Our daughter got him as a puppy, shortly after another dog put out his left eye. Last year, our daughter had a serious wreck with Jimmy in the car. Jimmy was thrown from the car and could not be found. Four months later a deputy found Jimmy and returned him to our daughter. He apparently had hip damage from the accident and now has to sit like this, pretty much like a person. The vet said he's not in any pain, and wouldn't recommend reconstructive surgery. Please say hello to Jimmy... Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk

  16. I remain incredulous at the stupidity of Libertarians and other far-left Democrats. If you enable Trump to retain the Presidency, there could quite literally be no country left to support in your lifetime. As usual, I admonish you to grow the fuck up.

  17. So you would willingly cast your vote, either by ballot or by 3rd-party or non-voting complicit behavior, for Donald Trump. Fuck that. A Sanders presidency is vastly superior to 4 more years of Trump. A year or two of Sanders followed by a year or two of Gabbard is vastly superior to Trump. I swear to God, way too many "Democrats" have such a fucking hard time with very basic tactics. There is one goal here -- get Trump out of office. All other choices are preferable.

  19. It's a good thing for Roger Stone that he's just a wealthy white man who has been convicted of perjury, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice and not, for example, a black man selling loose cigarettes on a street in New York City because there are big time repercussions for that! It's especially a good thing for Roger that he's not five black teenagers who were wrongfully accused of raping a woman in Central Park because Trump would be calling for his execution.

  20. Bingo. I'm sure that the same posters in this thread who think students should pay for their mistake of financing a "useless" degree also think Trump is a great business man and all of his bankruptcies are just the art of the deal. When a rich person fucks up, they have bought and paid for politicians writing beneficial laws that will protect the rich person's money even as they fuck over an entire company, industry, or country (hello, 2008). And that's just good business sense. But when an 18 year old tries to give themselves a better path in life that offers them an opportunity for a career in an industry they like, it's "well you were just fucking stupid and need to pay for your mistakes."

  24. Was the thread supposed to read, “hey I’m super happy Bernie is winning New Hampshire so when he wins the Nomination will YOU vote for HIM?” because that’s what Bernie bros usually ask instead of the question presented. And what I find interesting is two of the loudest Bernie bros on this board equivocated on their answer. Shocking. I’ll vote for any Dem candidate, any of them. Doesn’t matter who gets it. And I’ll give them a few bucks and give them volunteer time too. It’s a no brainer.

  25. Bernie would have beat trump in 2016, even without the Russian interference. Its very hard for the Democratic Party to admit this but its true. He beats trump in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. I don’t agree with all his positions either, but if Biden falters, which it appears he is doing, then the Bern is the best chance to beat trump as well and he will. The Democratic Party won’t like it, but oh well.

  26. JFC I am not even a Sanders voter but I am getting really tired of this nonsense. This is a selection of the first page of "Bernie Sanders vs Trump polls on Google" and some other polls pulled from the RCP link https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/us/general_election_trump_vs_sanders-6250.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/Michigan.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/Pennsylvania.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/Wisconsin.html https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/02/11/sanders-crushes-trump-18-points-among-independent-voters-new-national-general https://www.newsweek.com/bernie-sanders-doubles-his-lead-over-donald-trump-hypothetical-general-election-poll-1482075 All available data shows Sanders outperforms moderate Ds in WI-MI-PA, Democrats' path of least resistance. This playedd out last year in those states, where Sanders beat Clinton in two of the three primaries, and the amount of Independents that voted Sanders and then flipped to Trump exceeded Trump's margin of victory. In fact, while we'll obviously never know for sure, the data says that if Sanders was the D nominee in 2016, we'd all be watching the NH Republican primary right now because he'd be President. There are plenty of legit reasons to prefer someone else over Sanders. I do myself. The "viable to the general elctorate" angle is simply not rooted in reality.

Grow up, set your petty differences aside, and vote your conscience. Once the dust settles and we have a nominee, we’re all going to need to work together to get that man or woman elected.

  31. As someone who attended a regionally well regarded Private Liberal Arts school in the early 2000's, I'll contribute a few observations. All the theater majors I knew all do pretty well for themselves excepting the ones with crippling substance abuse problems, with all them making a living with their technical skills, not acting. E.g one runs lights for major tours, another coordinates production things at Disney etc, another builds specialty props for movies and whatnot, but the degree gave them networking and experience. Secondly while my school was expensive for the Midwest on paper, the merit scholarships made it the same as going to the instate flagship. I went that way because I could easily double major in Poli Sci, and Religious studies with a double minor in history and philosophy and be done in 4 years while doing a bunch of other stuff, and it was a wet campus. The bulk of my student debt was taking a year of law school to figure out I sure as fuck didn't want to be a lawyer. I pivoted to getting a Master's in Ag Econ that was fully funded, and a commodity broker/cattle producer. Now the same school charges a significant premium to the flagship, even with significant merit aid, and they have added a bunch of sports and other activities along with administrators that cost a lot more than just letting students entertain themselves by being a wet campus and having the basic extra-curriculars. Both ways the less achieving kids from better off families pay most of the freight. In my experience, the real student loan train wrecks come from the people that pursued graduate degrees that weren't funded and didn't finish. While trades are important, and can certainly provide a great living, we also undersell that many of them are hard as hell on your body, and that much of the upside is in running your own business in the said trade, which is distinctly not for everybody in skill, temperament, risk, and hours. In conclusion, if the government and society is happy to soak up risk for many big business and set them up for easy success, maybe doing the same for citizens as they come of age might yield dividends as well.

  33. Better than I do about Trump. Which is the same thing I can say about Sanders. Granted, that's true of probably almost any candidate. But I don't think most of the candidates to date have a shot in hell of beating Trump at this point. I'll vote for whoever wins regardless. But this is past the point of weighing my options for a perfect candidate or leader. This isn't threading the needle for perfection. There is a candidate in office and looking wonderful for re-election that is corrupt, borderline evil, and arguably a threat to our way of life. If I believe that is a certainty, then I'll take an Unknown who may be shitty over a proven piece of shit and roll the dice. For a guy who is so intent on Sanders being the candidate, and who is so flippantly dismissive of Bloomberg, why are you spending so much time here posting? You don't think he's a threat, you don't think he's a leader, why are you stomping around here at all? Shouldn't you be burning up the phone lines for your boy soliciting a dollar? The rest of us are just trying to figure out what we think the landscape looks like.

  40. Nope. Dallas. I just had a deep sense of duty to country and had planned to go to OCS after graduation anyway, so when Iraq invaded Kuwait I figured why not just join now. I knew UT would still be there when I got back. In retrospect, I guess I was a gullibleI 19 y.o., and believed that the US only fought righteous wars that made us safer at home...even after all these years, that's embarrassing to type. All that stuff about American exceptioalism, and fighting for our freedom abroad is just bullshit propaganda to meet enlistment goals. 99% of the time, we fight to make rich people richer. Period. All that said, I wouldn't trade the experience. I needed discipline, and loved the brotherhood aspects of military life. My grades drastically improved when I got back to school which helped me get into grad school and become the person I am today.
