  2. In following this thread and others, I see the sentiment is somewhat pervasive that 2021 will be a season in which expectations should be tempered. It’s not always clear to what degree, but I don’t get the impression that many folks are expecting Texas to compete for the conference title. On page 14 here alone, there’s healthy skepticism that 10 wins is a legit target without some real breaks. That implies that many do not expect Texas to be in contention for the Big 12 title, unless folks have convinced themselves that Texas will lose to ULaLa, Arky, and the bowl game. I understand reluctance to buy-in. We’ve had a rough 11 year run and Sarkisian isn’t going to prove himself reliable until, well, he does. In any event, there are 3 factors that, to me at least, should trump the skepticism. 1) Texas recruited well under Herman. Specifically, Texas recruited well on the DL and OL. There is talent on the roster. It’s not Bama’s or Ohio State’s roster at this time. It’s also got more raw talent on it than arguably any other roster Texas will face with the possible (probable?) exception of OU. Again, if you’re a “recruiting rankings don’t matter” guy, that’s fine. Data doesn’t support that unless coupled with coaching incompetence (see Texas specifically for the last 11 years), but, hey, it’s been a hard run on that front as a Texas fan. I get it. 2) This is the best coaching staff assembled at Texas since probably DKR, at least on paper. We can quibble over Coleman or Joseph, I guess, but a lot of coaches seem to actually think they can coach, so I’ll cross my fingers. 3) The 2021 schedule simply isn’t intimidating. Long gone are the days where we can be confident in beating the also-rans of the conference, but if Texas is ever going to ascend to the top tier again, you have to believe that Texas is going to start actually beating the teams it’s supposed to be beating, and that includes Okie State, TCU, WVU and Baylor, consistently. I expect that to start this year.

  4. I don't talk about this much, but there's a reason I don't even belong to Baylor sports message board. Such a beat down. I barely tolerate most Baylor people. I'm really happy for this team. They earned this.

  7. Rating our position groups based on how they performed under a coaching staff that just got fired and then using that as the expectation of performance under our new staff doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. We will be significantly more talented than every team we face this year besides OU. If this coaching staff is good, then 10 wins including the bowl shouldn’t be that difficult. People on the Football Board were claiming we had no talent on the OL besides Cosmi pretty much all last year and then started to change their tune some when Majors came in and Bijan got reps. We never even saw our best 5 on the field together last year, and Jeff Howe reported that NFL teams have been shocked at what they’re hearing from Cosmi about the techniques Hand coached. It really can’t be understated what a horrible job our offensive coaches did last year. Our OL will be noticeably better than last year even with the loss of Cosmi. Same goes for our defense, we’re more talented than everyone we face except maybe OU. We’re thin at LB, edge pad rusher, and a little unproven at Safety, but we have plenty of talent to make it work. PK has done an excellent job at generating pass rush from the interior in his time at UW, and we have nationally elite interior DL this year. We have a lot of talent at OL, WR, and TE that was obscured by coaching idiocy. We’re also in a very good spot at QB. Almost every team we face this year would trade their QB room for ours. Just because we haven’t seen the talent produce up to it’s level, doesn’t mean we’re rebuilding or that these coaches don’t have a talent advantage to utilize. Then you have a god awful memory.

  8. Their sources are good. The staff just isn't adhering to their particular vision for the class and is moving a lot of different directions at once, which I guess hurts their feelings since they've established themselves in the industry as accurate, infallible talent evaluators.

  9. Well when I met John wooden, I just had to ask him if he had any regrets in his coaching career. Almost before I could finish the question, he immediately replied that he did have one major regret and it was that he never left UCLA for the absolute privilege of coaching at Texas tech.

  10. Most teams have holes. The OL talent isn't average and will be higher ranked from a recruiting perspective than all but one team that they play. The same is true for pretty much every other position. You cannot middle the premise that this team has recruited talent and this staff has a rep for coaching up talent into "oh, it's a rebuild" or "man, there sure are a lot of holes on that roster". I guess you can be that guy that follows recruiting and then believes that recruiting doesn't matter, or something. I'm past that stage in my understanding of the sport. Texas has talent. It's not in a spot to be CFP-calibre yet, but it is certainly in a spot where it should beat every school on the schedule consistently that isn't named OU or whoever the big non-con opponent is. This year, there isn't even a big non-con. Louisiana will be ranked, but Texas should beat Louisiana any time they're on the field together. Arkansas is a mediocrity potentially in ascent, and that's it. The talent and depth can improve. Great. 10 wins or fucking leave. This isn't a rebuild and anyone equivocating for the staff with that is ridiculous.

  11. Yeah, but we have too many SHITTY receivers. Not a lot of good receivers. Taking the gas off several difference makers is an odd choice when we're not a slam dunk for anyone else of their caliber. That being said, I'm not going to lose my shit over Sark's recruiting choices at WR of all places in his first class just because a few 995ers get shrill voiced and histrionic in April.

  12. Ha ha. After our first-round debacle, I was trying to explain to my wife what a colossal humiliation of a loss that was. "We got 3 or 4 guys who are going to get looks in the NBA, and they lost to a bunch of future youth pastors and mattress salesmen." My wife: "Well, that's great for that team, right? I mean, just think about how great that is for those play..." Me: "Just fucking stop. Just stop."

  13. No, you can't. Because you were silent and approving not just when Trumpist news outlest spewed a constant torrent of lies, and when Trump himself did. You have demonstrated that lying doesn't bother you. At all. Not one bit. So, you have surrendered any ground to criticize it. You are okay with lying. Once you have established that, you have staked out your position. And now you're stuck with it. That's the peril of selling your credibility to support a charlatan. Your credibility is sold and gone. Tough shit. You fucked around. Now find out.

  15. I have had some time to process that game, and I keep just thinking “that was a great fucking game.” As gut-wrenching as it was, that was why we watch sports. It was Apollo v Rocky throwing blows at the end and only one could remain standing. And Suggs threw the final haymaker. But I’m usually pissed at losses like this. But I wasn’t. I was heartbroken. But I was psyched that a game like that was played. I worry that we don’t get back here soon. But I do love where Mick is taking the program.

  16. Baylor wins a championship. Tech was the last runner-up. KU is still in the mix every year. Okie State has the #1 overall pick. Hell, U of H made the Final 4. And we got 6 years of Shaka and not one god damned tournament win.

"How many sandwiches should I get for tomorrow?" "Huh?" "Yeah, how many sandwiches should I get for tomorrow?" "Why are you getting sandwiches?" "Because we're doing an Easter egg hunt in the backyard with my brother's family." "Oh, I didn't know they were coming. But okay, 14 dozen." "Why do I even ask you? You're no help."

Now that's he's defaulted back to just being a regular piece of shit who won't pay his bills, I wonder if a lot of cities just refuse to issue permits unless he fronts the cash for all off the necessary security, etc...

  26. So much this. Gonzaga played a few more minutes of basketball two days ago. And it's not uncommon for teams to play three or four days in a row in conference tourneys and the early season tourneys. Gonzaga's not down 10 because of fatigue; they're down 10 because Baylor played a lot better.

  33. I went to church on Easter Sunday with my wife, youngest child, her husband, and two grandkids. First time back in church since February 2020. Our pastor gave an inspiring 11 minute sermon and the music and fellowship made for a true spiritual connection. My other kids and grandkids joined us in the early afternoon and we chowed down on grilled salmon and shrimp, deviled eggs, twice baked potatoes, asparagus, homemade yeast rolls, and homemade carrot cake in the shape of an Easter bunny. Played with the grandkids for hours and slept like a dead man last night. It was a big league day.

Two hours after we brought them home, I got the news my son had died and was I ever glad we had them to bring a smile and remind us how much we have to be thankful for. I know that each of the canine kids we have had throughout our 36 years together brought new joy while never replacing their predecessors but rather meeting a need we have to care for another animal. Good vibes coming your way as you make the decision that is right for you.

  37. "rebuild?" I'm not expecting a playoff run in 2021, but I can't really get behind the notion that this staff is facing a rebuild. There's plenty of talent on the roster to go with a forgivable schedule. If they're not 10wins+ after the bowl game, "7 Win Steve" will be feeding the fires around his so far well-earned nickname. Dude's getting paid $5+ and his staff's getting another $5+ in the Big 12. They need to be putting a lot of W's up in 2021 and building on it.
