  2. With all due respect to Week 0 (and with respect to @Macanudo and @closetojumping for stealing their bit), the 2022 college football season truly kicks off this week. Here are the games I feel are worth keeping an eye on: Thursday, September 1st Central Michigan @ #12 Oklahoma State - 6:00pm, FS1 Oklahoma State figures to be a major factor in the Big 12 title race this season. Central Michigan had a very nice 9-4 season last year. OSU is a 21 point favorite. West Virginia @ #17 Pittsburgh - 6:00, ESPN The return of the Backyard Brawl! Due to West Virginia’s move to the Big 12, this game hasn’t been played since 2011. Despite losing Kenny Pickett and Jordan Addison (and Brennan Marion), Pitt is a 7 point favorite. JT Daniels is now the QB for WVU. Penn State @ Purdue - 7:00, FOX I’m not going to pretend I know a lot about these teams, but Jeff Brohm has done a good job at Purdue and there are some preseason prognosticators who are bullish on Penn State this year. Purdue is a Thursday night home dog (I don’t think this means as much as it did 10-15 years ago) as Penn State is favored by 3. Friday, September 2nd Temple @ Duke - 6:30, ACCN This isn’t anything special, but Stan Drayton’s debut as head coach of Temple deserves a passing mention on this board. Duke is favored by 7. Illinois @ Indiana - 7:00, FS1 Nothing special, but it's a conference game taking place on a night where not a lot of exciting games are happening. Indiana is a 3 point home favorite. TCU @ Colorado - 9:00, ESPN Again, nothing special but it's a conference foe opening on the road against a Power 5 opponent. It's also the beginning of the Sonny Dykes era at TCU, which is favored by 10.5 on the road. Saturday, September 3rd *Unfortunately, none of the 11:00am games on Saturday are terribly appealing. This will be a good time to make sure you’re fully stocked up on beer and to get the smoker going. I may check in on the aggy game (11:00am, SECN) to see how Evan Stewart’s blocking looks.* North Carolina @ Appalachian State - 11:00am, ESPNU This one could be worth checking out just for the atmosphere alone. App State sold out their season tickets for the first time in school history, and the primary factor in that was the visit from UNC. Carolina’s season opening win against FAMU was fairly meh, so maybe this is a spot where we can see the home team pull off an upset. Carolina is only a 2 point favorite. #23 Cincinnati @ #19 Arkansas - 2:30, ESPN This is where the day starts to take off. Both of these teams are coming off successful 2021 campaigns. Cincinnati broke through and made the CFP, while Arkansas went 9-4 in Sam Pittman’s second year. Cincinnati will be replacing Desmond Ridder. Arkansas is a 6 point favorite. #11 Oregon vs. #3 Georgia (in Atlanta) - 2:30, ABC Dan Lanning makes his head coaching debut against the team he helped lead to a national championship last season as its defensive coordinator. Can’t really say that I think Oregon has much of a shot here, but I didn’t give them any chance on the road against Ohio State last year and they won that one, so who knows. Georgia is favored by 17.5. #24 Houston @ UTSA - 2:30, CBSSN Houston has gotten some hype as a G5 team who could possibly run the table and be in playoff contention. UTSA is our week 3 opponent. Definitely a game worth keeping an eye on during breaks in the two games listed immediately above. Houston is a 4 point favorite. #7 Utah @ Florida - 6:00, ESPN I think Utah is going to be one of the best teams in the country and Cam Rising will be one of the top QB’s in college football this year. This will be a potential showcase game for them. On the other side of things, this is the Florida head coaching debut for Billy Napier. Utah is favored by 2.5. #5 Notre Dame @ #2 Ohio State - 6:30, ABC This is the marquee game of week 1. Marcus Freeman makes his head coaching debut against his Alma Mater. Ohio State is loaded this year and could have the best offense in the country. I’m not sure how competitive the game will be (Ohio State is favored by 17), but tuning in at the beginning and seeing all the pomp and circumstance surrounding this game should really bring home the fact that college football season is back. SMU @ North Texas - 6:30, CBSSN The debut of Thomas J. Herman as an analyst! UL Monroe @ Texas - 7:00, LHN The beginning of the Quinn Ewers era! This should be a beat down (we’re a 38.5 point favorite) and hopefully we see multiple young players flash. Also no injuries. Boise State @ Oregon State - 9:30, ESPN The season debut of Pac 12 After Dark. One last chance to chase your gambling losses for the day. Should be a competitive game as Oregon State is just a 3 point favorite. Sunday, September 4th Florida State @ LSU - 6:30 ABC Brian Kelly’s debut as LSU coach. He’s a clown and the fit feels weird, but he can coach. Florida State had a glorified scrimmage against Duquesne yesterday. This is an interesting game, enhanced by the fact that it's the only game of the day. LSU is favored by 3. Monday, September 5th #4 Clemson @ Georgia Tech - 7:00 ESPN The final game of the long kickoff weekend. A #4 ranking for Clemson feels a bit optimistic to me, but that shouldn’t show against hapless Georgia Tech. Honestly, this is a game you could skip entirely if it was taking place on Saturday, but as the only game of the day, we all know we’ll be watching. That’s it for week one. Is there anything I missed?

  4. IMO, we need to separate the news and notes game week thread from the predictions thread. No offense to anyone but I don't really need to keep up with this if it's just people posting their predictions.

  6. I think you’re misreading the room, and sorry for the long cat post. First, let’s separate weapons shipments from sanctions and political pressure. Russia has rather less ability to influence the former (most important for Ukraine in the near to medium term) than the latter, no matter how cold Europe gets. First, the major arms suppliers both in absolute and percentage of GDP terms are nations that are least susceptible to energy blackmail (US, UK) and/or completely frothing at the mouth and resistant to energy blackmail (Poland, the Baltics, Czechs, Finns). Germany and France have been helpful, but the reality is that it’s US/UK/Polish weapons that are key to this fight. And we’ve already telegraphed that we’re in it for the long haul. Our recent 3 billion package that engages industry contains lots of systems that won’t be delivered till 2023 and beyond. The UK is in a similar place and the Poles will send every gun they have then send rocks if it means they kill a Russian. Again, go to the Polish procurement— all that legacy equipment will end up in Ukraine. Second, arms supplies are bilateral (not EU/NATO) decisions. So the Germans and French have no arm to twist to make us or the Brits or the Eastern Europeans stop. They just have diplomatic pressure and that would be really pushing a rock up hill given how much credibility they both lost. Russia has a rather better chance of freezing Europeans out of sanctions and into a more politically amenable place. But, there are structural issues working against them. Unlike arms shipments, sanctions ARE EU-wide. And that means you need consensus not only to create them, but to lift them. So maybe the Germans get cold and block new sanctions packages, but the Poles and the Baltics aren’t lifting shit. Until the end of this year the Czechs hold the EU presidency and they are hawks. They will be shaping the Union agenda and easing up on Russia is not on their agenda. They’re trying to get a blanket Russian visa ban right now. And they will resist any efforts to politically isolate Ukraine. Best case, Russia gets some symbolic visits from Macron and Olaf and they block new sanctions. Even that will be hard for them. But Russia is turbo-fucked on weapons, if anything the big players will expand shipments and capabilities to make up for Western European footdragging. We need to think about Russia’s “three day beheading campaign” as not only hubris-driven, but necessity driven. Why else would they go against all their alleged comparative advantage and abandon their steam-roller doctrine? Because in actuality, they aren’t set up to outlast Ukraine and the West. “Never start a land war in Asia” may be the first classic geopolitical lesson. “Don’t bet your hopes on America running out of shit to shoot at you” is a good second.

  7. Slorch- Schools and Universities aren't indoctrinating anything. It blows my mind that you think this. What is happening is our children are realizing, through the ability to tap into the rest of the globe, that millions of other young people feel the same way they do. We used to be able to filter that out, but with tik tok and other outlets these kids are able to not only hear from other people, but study up on the things we demonize and come to their own conclusions. They are no longer growing up in the protective information bubbles that we grew up in. Your child feels like they have been in the wrong body all their life. You tell them they are wrong. They go on tik tok and type in trans and see 1000's of people who are living out their dream. Then they go on google and research everything. It's all right there at their fingertips. They walk right past their parents who are trying NOT to acknowledge their differences and take all that straight to school. Teachers are on the front lines of all this, but you think they should just mind their own business. Ignore the bruises. Ignore the hungry kids. Ignore the dysphoria. They are just trying to help the kids cope, not indoctrinate them. A couple years ago my daughter asked us if we would call her friend a boy's name because she now wanted to identify as a boy. Said friend was now dating another friend of my daughter's who was a girl. Neither of these kids' parents had a clue what was going on and we were stuck in the middle, not trying to rock the boat. These kids came to these conclusions all on their own. Another kid my kid knows is trans, and shot a video of herself walking downstairs in what was clearly a woman's outfit and filming her folks from behind as they are watching Fox News. The video is captioned "watching fox news while a trans girl lives in their house". The girl has been on HRT since last year, and clearly looks like a woman. The parents have to be ignoring her everytime she walks by, doing everything they can not to address it. No Slorch, kids are refusing to swallow our bullshit, educating themselves, and pushing their own agendas. Adults are just along for the ride.

  8. @Scipioand myself are proud to be the official mortgage sponsor of Surly. We have done free money giveaways for the NCAA tournament, playoff baseball, and now have added a football component to the free cash giveaway. Here is how this giveaway will work: Every week we will have a post asking for your game prediction, giving you a prop bet, and a chance to weigh in on anything related to the game, opponent or game week. $50.00 to the winner of the game score contest. (Winner and score for the week) $25.00 to the winner of the prop bet (Will change every week) $25.00 to the post of the week (funniest story, best trash talk, best analysis on what ended up happening during the game, or post that best captures the Surly Zeitgeist of the week) I'm the judge of all the winners. My tie breakers for the score contest and/or prop bet contest will be whoever I thought had the best overall post. We will have a sticky on the top of the board honoring those who won throughout the season that will get updated throughout the season with the winners and the best content. The overall winner of the most weekly cash for the year will win an additional $250.00, two tickets to the Burnt Endz dinner, and eternal bragging rights. Anyone not wanting to claim their money can donate it to the wreath fund or Burnt Endz. All money will be paid at the end of the season. As with all our giveaways it's the same- free to enter- no purchase necessary, we hope this will be fun. If you would like to support us as we try to support the community we would love to help you with any mortgage need you might have. Feel free to PM me or call me at 832-557-1095 if you have a mortgage question or need. We've helped a lot of Longhorns with their home loans as it's a community we truly love. The prop bet for the week is how many total yards from scrimmage will Bijan Robinson have- rushing and receiving?

  9. I don't see how people don't think this team scores 10 touchdowns. Sark doesn't dial down the plays and we are paying them to come lose at DKR, they don't get a mercy killing in front of a home crowd. Fucking Cole Lourd is gonna throw for 2TD's

  11. The Colts brought in two old, veteran QB’s this year to compete for the playoffs. They already let Jacoby Brissett walk, cut Jacob Eason loose and evicted Carson Wentz. The one constant in this whole QB shuffling is Sam Ehlinger. And I highly doubt that he is going anywhere…especially after this preseason performance. He is the future.

  16. Better late than never with posting this. Got to check out Interstellar BBQ before they went on summer vacation. A pitmaster in my area told me that the TM top 50 list has moved beyond meat quality because every BBQ joint in Texas is pushing out great brisket, ribs, sausage, etc. The new thing is being the total package. Great meat, great sides, unique eats, good vibes, etc. That totally rings true with Interstellar. Their meat is really good (they cut me some burnt ends and it was magical) but the sides are crazy. Scalloped potatoes with this thick cheese crust, creamy mac and cheese, great meats, and wash it all down with some watermelon fresca. I really enjoyed it. By the way, shout out to my wife who thought it would be a good idea to sit at the table closest to the line with the entire restaurant up for grabs in the air conditioning. So damn annoying but whatever.

  17. I officiated my first Varsity game of the year this past Friday. Two 6-A teams from NEISD and NISD (San Antonio). Great game for those in attendance, with a 31-28 final score. As a kid that grew up in a smaller or one school town, that was the “event” to attend during football season! Over the last ten years, it seems that people have too much to do on Fridays. Friday night, opening week of the season, and the stadium wasn’t even 50% capacity. I look during pre-game and there’s roughly 100+ in the band, 20+ spirit/flags/drill and etc, 10+ cheerleaders, and over 60 FB players, plus 10 coaches. My problem is that apparently not every one involved has someone in attendance to support them! That’s the same on both sides of the stadium. People say it’s a sign of the times, but we need to do better as a society. Old man rant out! Hook’em!

  18. In our shared state of Texas, "the left" hasn't controlled anything, much less education, our entire adult lives. Yeah, that was my first reaction too. I'm a product of Texas' public education, and I was definitely taught "state's rights!" at multiple grade levels, and not one fucking time (until I was at UT) did a teacher correctly observe that "human enslavement is a profoundly evil institution, and one that runs in direct contrast to the ideals America congratulated itself for being founded on." That seems to me to be a completely in-bounds and non-debatable fact that was glaringly omitted for me (and for millions of other Texas-educated kids). As an aside here, right-wing politicians pretending that education is dominated by "the left" - that had a direct corollary during Snovid in 2020, when the power grid -- which is 100% controlled by right-wing lobbyists and their political stooges -- completely and totally collapsed. How quickly did our Republican friends start sharing anti-green energy memes with frozen windmills on social media? It was fucking ridiculous.

  21. I know there were whispers before but it's starting to become real clear how much of a culture impact Casey had on our team last year. First sign was him publicly throwing shade all offseason. Second sign was our guys publicly throwing shade back on social media (you don't do that to someone you like). Now we've seen a vintage 2nd half performance from him with the familiar reaction to match. Not saying everything will be solved now but having an influence like that as your starting QB/leader means a lot.
